Nahariama for sale digitally in their stores. Evidently with the shifting
on sale date, the tracks made their way out and they ran with the original
release. CDs and vinyl still set for May 28, though direct orders are often
filled a little sooner by our distributor once the stock is ready. Either
way, they've been great about getting then to your door ON the actual
release date.

Anyway - I will post here again (should be relatively soon) when I get the
MP3 and FLAC available direct from us as I will get that on sale ASAP so
that you FLAC fans don't have to wait until May 28

<pre>I can't recall if this was mentioned here before or not. Dave &lt; at &gt; PBE (FAX'S
USA distributor) along with Krystian Sheck has decided to put out a 4CD
'tribute' set for Pete Namlook. 2CDs of FAX related artists and 2CDs of fan
created music. Updates are/will be here http://namlooktribute.tumblr.com/ The
list is stellar already and includes Bill and Eraldo Bernocchi amongst
others. Probably won't be out for a few months as the submission deadline
isn't until late May. It will be funded via Kickstarter or a similar
service.

And for anyone lamenting the loss of Pete, Dave is also starting a new
label to carry on the spirit (but not, as he took great pains to say,
replace Pete or FAX) of the label. This may be the second release at this
point as the first will be the last project Pete mastered himself -
Material Object.

<pre>Laz is not The Dead. There have been some really uneventful Laz shows. Some of his studio releases have been equally unfortunate and wish he'd edited them out of existence so I hadn't forked over the dough. Nonetheless, this is part of Bill Laswell's appeal - enough of a jungle to wade through that listeners feel we've made discoveries. That said, I still prefer the studio releases that have had the maximum effort exerted. It's clearly discernible to my ear where the investments have been made. I love paying for that. Looking forward to new MOD which seems to have much time applied.

<pre>It's occurred to me now that Bill has the MOD website/store it could also offer recordings of his various live shows solely as downloads (Flac &amp;/or mp3). He certainly has the expertise &amp; people around him to do so at a pretty low cost. How much could it cost to host more sound files on the site along with the official release ones? Especially given the relatively fewer official cd releases in recent years. A "Beat the Boots" type thing w/o the cost of their physically released. As is he only earned money from the individual shows &amp; this would be a way to earn a little "extra" from having done them. Frisell &amp; many others currently do this.

I could understand if he feels the live shows are "test grounds" or experiments that he'd rather not put out there but to my mind its a damn shame to have so much great Material only heard/seen by those present at the shows (or sometimes audience recordings). Unless you live in Japan or Europe there's not that many Laz live shows to get to!

Seems reasonable to me but what do I know?

<pre>This 2000 concert might be of interest. Note that it will be only be there
for a week or so. It came from Dime originally

The following extract/review by John Fordham appeared in The Guardian, July
6, 2000. Tip of the hat to Alastair Wilson at zornithology.com.

*When John Zorn, the volcanically productive new-music alchemist, picked up
his alto sax at the Barbican this week, the audience braced itself for a
ride to the brink of migraine. The American saxophonist and composer had
appeared on this stage twice in the previous nine months. But while those
occasions featured first chamber music, then a blend of jazz and
traditional Jewish music, this time Zorn brought a heavyweight improvising
band featuring former Henry Cow guitarist Fred Frith, drummer David
Lombardo and bassist Bill Laswell.*

***Lombardo’s sinister tappings heightened expectations at the opening, and
sure enough Zorn opened with probably the loudest and longest overblown
alto-sax note heard on that stage. The pieces were urgent and succinct,
frequently winding up on abrupt crash-stops or circituitous but logical
decelerations.*

***With barely perceptible nods and gestures, Zorn determined who payed
with whom, and when. While some improv purists might describe this as
cheating, the framework kept the audience insured against everything that
Zorn and Frith cold hurl at it. Nor was it all white-heat improvising. A
scrambled, lopsidedly swinging Frith intro brought Zorn to a spine-tingling
sax lament, which ended in a trance-like fluttering of the instrument’s
pads alone. A whirling, repeated Ornette Coleman-like figure brought an
exquisite solo of glinting sounds from Frith.*

***A barrage of squalling between Frith and Zorn gaveway to an episode of
movie soundtrack atmospherics between Laswell and Lombardo. Zorn made a
motorbike sound way below the alto’s range and Frith detuned to follow him,
but then the saxophonist turned to breezy, dancing figures. It was fluid,
restless, wild, and rich in contrast. The audience reaction was ecstatic,
despite the mugging of its eardrums by Zorn’s ferocious music.*
