I'm discovered that getmail does not return with a non-zero exit code when
authentication fails. This seems to be shortly discussed also in this mail

mentions that it should indeed return with a non-zero exit code but. Is
this implemented somewhere?

I was not aware of the difference between "seen" and "new", thanks for
explaining. In mutt I now have "set mark_old=yes" which indeed helped
at least for some imap servers (not with Exchange btw.)

Unfortunately I often need to access IMAP servers via webmail
interfaces, in particular "squirrelmail" and "outlook webapp". Both
only seem support "seen", but not "new".

Can I configure getmail, so that it flags retrieved messages as "seen"?

I just upgraded to getmail 4.26.0, which now uses BODY.PEEK per
default. However this change is inconvenient for my setup, because it
does not change the "new" flag of retrieved messages. Would it be
possible to make BODY.PEEK configurable?

To clarify why I have a problem with the new behavior, here is my
current setup:

I regularly fetch my mail with getmail to read on my main computer. I
leave a month worth of messages on the imap server, so that I can easily
access them when I am out of office. When I do that, I am mostly
interested in the messages which arrived after I have last fetched
messages with getmail. In previous versions of getmail before 4.26.0
they were conveniently flagged as "new". Now however, fetched messages
retain the new status on the imap server , and it is not easy to spot
the messages which require attention.

I understand that the majority of users prefers the new behavior or do
not care, so I would of course not mind if the default for IMAP
retrieval was "BODY.PEEK", as long as there is an easy way to switch to
the old retrieval mechanism.

Alternatively, I would appreciate any other suggestions to overcome this
problem.

getmail timeoue on a virtual box Fedora 16 guest on a mac OSx host

Hi,

I need help getting getmail to work on virtual box guest of Fedora 16, and
the host is mac OSX

I installed as per the documentation and did the basic configuration to
retrieve email, and here is the output

$ getmail
getmail version 4.26.0
Copyright (C) 1998-2009 Charles Cazabon. Licensed under the GNU GPL
version 2.
SimpleIMAPRetriever:manalweb2012< at >imap.googlemail.com:143:

getmailrc: socket error ([Errno 110] Connection timed out)
  0 messages (0 bytes) retrieved, 0 skipped

I am testing with telnet on both the guest and the host, and I receive the
same response:

telnet imap.googlemail.com 993
Trying 74.125.134.16...
Connected to imap.googlemail.com.
Escape character is '^]'.

so it is not the virtual box bridging problem,

The Mac host has the firewall diabled, and now I checked on Fedora and
enabled IMAPs and POPs and there seems no option to block them.

I appreciate if you can help resolve this problem,

thank you very much,

I am attempting to use getmail to poll several accounts (using SimpleIMAPRetriever) and am running in to what appears to be a reasonably widespread problem. When I set 'delete = true' as an option, I am getting 'IMAP error (INBOX is not writable)' for several different providers, including both Gmail and AOL. I know both of these providers do allow writing to their INBOX and deleting of e-mail.

Looking at some tcpdump output, my first guess is that use of the 'EXAMINE' command is giving Getmail some false impressions about the permissions of the mail folder. Not deleting the e-mail isn't an option; can anyone give me some help here?

getmail with IMAP IDLE?

I currently use getmail via cron, to move mail from my ISP's mail server
to my own, every five minutes. However, when waiting on a specific
mail, even five minutes takes too long, so I end up manually triggering
getmail anyway. I'd ideally like to switch from periodic polling to
using IMAP IDLE or similar to notice mails as soon as they appear.
fetchmail claims to do this, but I've had enough bad experiences with
fetchmail that I don't relish the thought of trying it again.

Can getmail do IMAP IDLE? (If not, could it, please?)

Alternatively, does some standalone program exist that could watch with
IMAP IDLE and fire off getmail when it sees new mail appear?

Or, any recommendations for a different solution?

I've just completed an initial run on my INBOX.

12952 messages (1593495828 bytes) retrieved, 10810 skipped

How do I get getmail to retry the messages which it skipped? My

selective delete implementation

I'm using a POP3 account configured with a SimplePOP3Retriever section. Using
the delete option you can delete the email from the server but all the emails
are deleted, you can't specify which emails should be deleted. Looking at the
documentation, the delete option is described as

delete (boolean) — if set, getmail will delete messages after retrieving and
successfully delivering them. If unset, getmail will leave messages on the
server after retrieving them. Default: False.

I have been trying to implement a selective delete action using a
Filter_classifier section, the documentation says:

Filter_classifier — run the message through an external program, and insert
the output of the program into X-getmail-filter-classifier: header fields in
the message. Messages can be dropped by having the filter return specific exit
codes.

So what I have tried to do is to create a filter script which provides an
appropriate return code depending on the date of the email (comparing to a
fixed date passed as an argument to the filter script itself). When the email
is too old (i.e. I want to delete it from the server) the filter script returns
0 and getmail says "delivered and deleted" when retrieving the email from the
server. When the email is too "young" (i.e. I want to leave it on the server)
then the filter script returns 99 and the email is dropped and not delivered
(getmail says "dropped by filter ...., deleted).

I was not expecting that the email is deleted in both cases! This is not
foreseen in the delete option description reported above, I'm expecting a
delete command only when the email is delivered.

From a remote account accessing through IMAP i want to retrieve all
messages (read and unread) from all folders (inside inbox and outside
inbox), these folders often change, so i would like something that would
allow not to change getmail configuration file everytime. I want to
download msg with more than 10 days and afterwards delete them from the
remote server.

My configuration file looks something like this:
[retriever]
type = SimpleIMAPSSLRetriever
server = xxxx
username = xxx
password = xxxx
mailboxes = I don't know what to put here to automatically allow retrieve
all folders

[destination]
type = Maildir
path = xxx

[options]
read_all = false (this will only allow to retrieve unread msg but i would
like every msg)

In options i would like to retrieve email with more than 10 days.
Thanks in advance.

getmail, MultiSorter and MultiGuesser

Greetings,

I'm using getmail to fetch emails from gmail and push them to RT.
since i do not have many mailboxes available, im using the + sign to
try to distinguish the queue i want my emails to be sent to. this is
just a background of the issue. anyhow, I've decided to use
MultiSorter; which gets getmail to say (and in accordance with the
documentation too) that it needs "domain mailbox retriever"; i have no
clue what that is nor did i find hint/example of such a thing;
probably due to my ignorance. it would be appreciated if this "domain
mailbox retriever" is elaborated upon a little. (is it something like
maildrop or procmail ?)

Failing to use MultiSorter; i tried using MultiGuesser. it does not
seem to guess correctly! here is my config:

-------------------------------
[retriever]
type = SimplePOP3SSLRetriever
server = pop.gmail.com
username = rt< at >XXX
password = YYY

[destination]
type = MultiGuesser
default = [rt-general-queue]
locals = (
        ('^rt+ict< at >','[rt-ict-queue]'),
        ('^rt+misc< at >','[rt-general-queue]')
        )

[rt-general-queue]
type = MDA_external
path = /usr/bin/rt-mailgate
user = getmail
group = getmail
arguments = ("--url", "http://localhost/rt", "--queue", "غير مصنّف",
"--action", "correspond",)

[rt-ict-queue]
type = MDA_external
path = /usr/bin/rt-mailgate
user = getmail
group = getmail
arguments = ("--url", "http://localhost/rt", "--queue", "البنية
المعلوماتية و الدعم التقني", "--action", "correspond",)

[options]
read_all = false
delete_after = 8
verbose = 2
-------------------------------

It always matches the default ! this might be due best guess at what
the envelope recipient of the message might have been (which again im
not sure what it means!); pardon my bad English. or maybe its due to +
being interpreted as regexp (but i cannot seem to find reference to
what library is used for the regular expression used).

last minute edit: i tried to escape the plus, it is now behaving
diffrently, but im not sure its behaving correctly yet.

Thanks for the great piece of software !

Hello All,

First of all, thank you Charles for all you great work!
I got getmail working within a few minutes. Documentation is great and
syntax is really simple.

I however have one question that the documentation and Google were not
able to help me with: marking e-mails read on destination.
Getmail is being used to backup mails in some cases (where it makes
sense to retrieve emails and mark them as unread on destination) but in
other cases it's being used as archive. Even if e-mails are read on on
the retrieve side, they are marked as unread on the destination side.
Is there anything I can do about it to have them marked as read on
destination ?

Thank you for your time

Thanks Scott & Charles!

But I think 'Mailbox' keyword is for IMAP? Would it work even if I had SimplePOP3SSLRetriever? Well in any case I tried it under POP3 but no joy.

andy

Hello,

Using a linux live CD I was able to set up getmail for a temporary session, and was able to retrieve 3 new emails. But on my desktop, I am trying to get those 3 emails so that they will reside in my Maildir. I went back to gmail on the browser and with 'Shift+u' marked them as 'Unread'.

So now, I try to fetch those 3 items with -a on the command line, throwing in -v but I get the reply below and no errors reported. How would I be able to fetch them so that I can store them?

Thanks for any help. I am using:

Skip on errors?

Hello,

is there a way to skip errors while reading mails?

I have this problem atm:
msg  2578/10197 (4250 bytes) from <ramona< at >foo.tld> to <dieter< at >foo.tld>
delivered to MDA_external command deliver (), deleted
Configuration error: envelope_recipient specified header missing
(delivered-to:1)

After hat getmail stops because 1 stupid wrong formatted mail and now
i have duplicate mails...

Solutions:
a) skip errors and just ignore it
b) delete mails after every delivering and not after all, so i can
search for the wrong formatted mail and there are no duplicates.

Thanks

I'm using getmail with a MDA_external destination type. I'd like to add another
parameter to the MDA_external section to configure the environment where the
external tool is executed. I have created a simple patch attached to this
email. The patch adds an "environment" parameter to destination sections of
type MDA_external. The parameter is a tuple of 2-tuples.

Something similar could be used also for an external filter program section.

Hi,

Using getmail_fetch I kept receiving error:

getmail_fetch version 4.23.0

Exception: please read docs/BUGS and include the following information in any bug report:

  getmail_fetch version 4.23.0
  Python version 2.7.2+ (default, Oct  5 2011, 10:41:47)
[GCC 4.6.1]

Unhandled exception follows:
    File "/usr/bin/getmail_fetch", line 205, in main
    go(retriever, destination, options, msg)
    File "/usr/bin/getmail_fetch", line 51, in go
    retriever.initialize()
  TypeError: initialize() takes exactly 2 arguments (1 given)

A working version for me was 4.20.4 and things broke some version after this.

I noticed /usr/bin/getmail had retriever.initialize(options) as code changes
from comparing 4.20.4 which worked for me to 4.23.0 which didn't.

This changes were reflected also in the getmail_fetch script so adding this
options arg at line 51 fixed things up.

Thanks

Chris
