<pre>I have a computer set up so you can dial in and work on it from another location. Lately I am having problems that if the line disconnects (our phone lines have problems) the computer is not releasing the modem so you then can not call back in and reconnect without having someone on site shutdown the computer and restart it.
My question is should I be looking at settings for the modem or for mgetty to ensure that if the call is broken that ttyS1 is freed back up and the modem is reset so it can answer the new call. In the past the most I had to do was get someone to turn off the modem and turn it back on in a few minutes to reset everything so you could call in.

This is my integrated gpu - it uses i915 Kernel module:

00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 2nd
Generation Core Processor Family Integrated Graphics Controller (rev
09) (prog-if 00 [VGA controller])
        Subsystem: Lenovo Device 3976

However it does does not support direct rendering :

$ glxinfo |grep -i direc
direct rendering: No (If you want to find out why, try setting
LIBGL_DEBUG=verbose)

my question is, is direct rendering working for anybody on this card?
(If not, what a crappy intel card to select as the integrated GPU!)

thanks in advance

printing problem with cups

<pre> Now for several months I'm having a mystery that goes beyond my
understanding..
I hav cups running and three printers, 2 network and one local
(connected to the cups server).
I can print on all three so apparently there is nothing wrong. However,
the mystery is the following:
The cups server (ubuntu 10.04 4-core AMD 4 GB) and another ubuntu system
(ubuntu 12.04 1-core 64-bit AMD 1 GB) will not print on one printer
(Brother-mfc-440CN). However, the web-interface to cups
(http://localhost:631/) gives no error. Every file - even test-pages -
are presented as printed the only anomaly is that sometimes in the
error-file the following error is given:
--------------------------------------
E [22/May/2012:12:51:25 +0200] Returning IPP
client-error-document-format-not-supported for Send-Document
(ipp://localhost:631/printers/Brother_MFC-440CN-2) from localhost
---------------------------------------
But not always. To add peculiarity to mystery, when I try to print from
a guest (XP) in VMWare on the system that also runs the cups server,
that goes without a problem!

When I look in /var/spool/cups/ I see all spool files from the start of
the problem (and that was already in 2011).
I have tried reinstall of cups but nothing helps.
The only strange thing I see is that the files in the /var/spool/cups
directory all belong to group lp and that group has no members (the
owner of the files is root but that is a member of every group).
I would be very grateful for anyone who can shed some light in this mystery,
Joep

understanding iptables rule matching

<pre>Hi,

when i have a set of rules for ipfw, it reads the rules in
numeric order (they are numbered) and after the first
match it stops reading and executes that rule.

It means the "drop all" rule must be the last.
In iptables you can put it first and the rules will be read till
the end. If later an ACCEPT-rule is found for a packet,
how does iptables decide which rule will be dominant?

I sincerely miss a numbering system on iptables.
It would make it much faster to correlate rules from
"iptables -L" with the ones written in the config file :-/

thx ...

<pre>
decided to do a release upgrade on my 64-bit 11.10 system and, with
"About 12 minutes remaining", the upgrade dialog is stuck at
"Configuring nfs-common", while the terminal's last line is:

  gssd stop/pre-start, process 4171

thoughts?

Hi, all.

I had an interesting situation yesterday where a friend had bought a HP
box with Natty pre-installed &amp; wanted it upgrading to Precise so I
Googled his specs &amp; found that his machine was 64-bit capable so I burnt
him an AMD64 image &amp; dropped by his place.

His copy of pre-installed Natty was 32 bit so him having not done
anything with the distro I re-booted from the Live CD intending to do a
clean install &amp; was surprised to find the installer asking me if,
amongst other things, I wanted to upgrade.

Just wondering that surely the installer wouldn't upgrade a 32-bit OS to
a 64-bit one would it?

Cheers,

  Phil...
