braai

<pre>Summertime, and the living is easy...

Most of us probably remember what braai means.
For the new ones amongst us, a braai is a barbecue. Except that a barbecue
is for ignorant Americans or Australians.
Braai is doing it properly, like proper South Africans. I am half South
African (actually got a passport the other day).

Last year we had loads of fun.
Last year's report can be found here:
https://wiki.edubuntu.org/BelgianTeam/SocialEvents/Braai

I have a suggestion:
we can use the opportunity to have a IRL meeting beforehand. Council
members, what do you think?
We could coordinate some new ideas, and perhaps refresh or shuffle the
Council.

I therefore made up a Doodle where you can do two things at once: choose a
date, and say if you'd like to attend an IRL meeting beforehand.

here's the link: http://www.doodle.com/ga4hbghzni4m3mgx
If you like the braai but have no interest in the meeting, just select the
'braai at 18h' only.

Of course, we can discuss the idea via this mailing list as well. If the
general opinion is not to have an IRL meeting, I can easily remove the
option from the Doodle.

I suggested some dates in July on the Doodle. If you do like the idea but
are not available on any of these dates, please do let me know. I can
easily expand the Doodle to suit other people's diary.

Cheers,
Jan.

P.S. I have attached last year's message just to get you into the vibe.

(the following message contains South African slang. If you are lost in
translation, there are plenty of web sites that will help you out with it.
Google is your friend. The Wikipedia list is kak, don't bother)

Howzit!

As promised I'll be organising a lekker South African braai at our place.

How will this braai work?
Basically anyone is invited, but we do have a logistic limit of 10 to 15
people on our terrace. The weather needs to be dry for the occasion. If it
rains, we need to shift the venue or the date. I have access to pretty
accurate forecasts so I can tell you at least a day in advance.

South Africans are very casual with their braai. If you happen to have a
friend that wants to come along last minute, he/she is welcome to join.
"Your friends are our friends too."
Because of this, the logistics are just as casual. We do cater for those
who want it. We'll have to shop for it ourselves and anyone can just ask to
buy something for them as well.
Many people prefer to bring their own 'dop en tjop'. Then they know they'll
like the meat that's on the fire, and the booze that is available.
We will have the basics: lager beer, wine, cola, water, and salads and
snacks. We will have braaivleis according to our own taste. If you wish we
should cater for you, by all means, just let us know. There may be some
boerewors if we can get hold of some. We usually get some sosaties and
chops from the local butchery.

You can try your skills on our vuvuzela's if you wish. (Don't give your
opinion now. It will all change once you have a few 'doppe' in you.)

We usually start our braai early. We get together from about 5pm onwards,
and the fires are usually started at around 7pm (actually after sunset, but
this is not recommendable in summer in Belgium).
It gives us enough time to praat kak, have some snacks, and drink! They
have a saying: Meestal is die mense gaar voor die vleis gaar is. (Usually
the people are 'cooked' before the meat is cooked).
Starting early has the added advantage that the party is usually over well
before midnight, and you still have the opportunity to catch the last
train. No need to drink and drive.

But if you don't smaak going home that night, we always have a spare bed or
two, and you are welcome to just kip until the morning.

Obviously there is no dress code for the occasion. Most people come in
shorts and plakkies if it's warm enough.

So kom maak 'n draai en kuier saam met ons. We're going to have a moerse
party.

Cheers,
Jan.

read :

It was not done for March 2012
(https://wiki.ubuntu.com/BelgianTeam/TeamReports/12/March), although
members of Ubuntu-be were present in activities.

For April 2012, you should add your activities in the wiki-page
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/BelgianTeam/TeamReports/12/April

Additionally, there is a need for coordination about this report at the
level of Ubuntu-be : work for the Ubuntu-be Council ?

<pre>Hi Guys,
I am getting involved in giving presentations about Ubuntu for a computer
company (www.to-my-taste.com) that is promoting silent and energy-efficient
computers for large offices, especially city councils and semi-governmental
organisations.

One of the things that I will definitely be asked, is the cost of
professional support.
I realise that there is no standard answer for this, and that it should be
tailor made, but at least I should have some idea.

Does anyone have experience with this? Any input is welcome, I am really
clueless.

Thanks,
Jan.

<pre>Just think about a Raspberry Pi costing less than a new pair of jeans! Today
I read through an article in the Guardian which I believe is very true and
offers a real opportunity for Linux as a whole, and aspecially for Ubuntu.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/education/2012/mar/31/why-kids-should-be-taught-code
http://www.guardian.co.uk/education/2012/mar/31/why-kids-should-be-taught-code

/There will be lots of interesting discussions about the key concepts that
students will need to understand, but here's one possible list for starters.
Kids need to know about: algorithms (the mathematical recipes that make up
programs); cryptography (how confidential information is protected on the
net); machine intelligence (how services such as YouTube, NetFlix, Google
and Amazon predict your preferences); computational biology (how the genetic
code works); search (how we find needles in a billion haystacks); recursion
(a method where the solution to a problem depends on solutions to smaller
instances of the same problem); and heuristics (experience-based techniques
for problem-solving, learning, and discovery)./

It still seems far away, but it could be heading our way &lt; at &gt; lightspeed.

Anyone already played with it: http://www.raspberrypi.org/
http://www.raspberrypi.org/
Still waiting to get one in my hands, patiently.

Lots of ubuntu to all!

Bill

informatique hebdomadaire, Install Party, etc.).

----------------------------------------------------

Dear Mr. / Ms.

Following the first edition, we contact you in order to put in order
the next 'Foire du Libre' which will take place the 18th of April in
Louvain-la-Neuve, a Belgian city with about 30k students and the same
amount of citizens.

We are a group of students in in an university facility gathered
around a common project, in our case: promoting free software. We are
called the 'Louvain-li-Nux', and we inform, promote, the use of free
software as well as help student to use them, all of this through
various activities ranging from install parties to conferences.

We would like to invite you to our next event, the 'Foire du Libre',
which is best described as a showcase of what's the free software
world. As your company if part of this world, we would like to also
invite it for this edition. Last year, we had representatives of
OpenERP, Drupal, OOO4kids, Claroline/iCampus, the Free Software
Foundation, the Mozilla Foundation, ... as well as members of the
university's IT department whose researches were aimed towards free
software such as Multipath TCP, the IP labs, Beernet, ...

In order to organize the event to be as smooth as possible, we would
like to know whether some member of the Belgian Ubunutu community
would be interested to come as a representative
of the community or not, in order to have a dedicated place for it,
and if he wishes to make a short presentation on a free
software related topic (technical or not, i.e. last year we've had
researchers explaining their work as well as OpenERP's CEO explaining
how business can work in the free software world)

Please excuse us for the approximate English.

Looking forward to hearing from you,
Yours sincerely,

Olivier Tilmans, for the Louvain-li-Nux (www.louvainlinux.be - website
is written in French)

New Hardware

<pre>Hi guys

A while ago I told on the meeting that the company where my father works is
going to change their hardware. Employees can ask to keep their pc, but
those that don't go away (most likely almost al of them) are ours to keep.
We are as a matter of fact the only organization who asked to get some of
these computers. My initial request was 20 PC's and a couple of Laptops for
Ubuntu-be, but that was only a target number. The IT guy told us that we
might even get some more out of it. Although this last fact remains
uncertain, we can be certain that we'll have some hardware.

All computers come with 2 TFT screens (according to my dad either 17,4" or
19"), the screens are adjustable in height and can rotate to have a
portrait instead of a landscape setup.

But there is some good and some bad news to it. The bad news is that there
is a condition!
The good news is that the condition is that we need to provide them with an
Installable Ubuntu USB stick and a user manual (preferably in 4 Languages).
This is because all computers, even those that don't come with us, are
going to be running Ubuntu when they leave the office. Every employee who
takes one of those computers will receive a printed manual.. ;-)

It didn't look like a bad deal to me. :p
So I said we could live with that! ;-)

I'll keep you all posted!
Latest news I got was that their new servers where slightly delayed and the
new laptops need to be configured to automatically connect etc.. The guy
told my dad that he was expecting our first computers to leave somewhere in
may and the last somewhere in June. (which is worse that the initial April
estimate but better than the in between August estimate...)

Kind regards

<pre>Since Ubuntu is about humanity and we actually have an african roots, I
figured this project might interest most of us:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y4MnpzG5Sqc

It's a documentary of about 30 minutes about an action group named
"Invisible Children" who are doing everything possible to make Kony famous.
Kony is a Rebel Leader who abducts kids in their sleep and forces the boys
to fight and the girls to become sexslaves.

Now, I know the mailinglist isn't supposed to be used for propaganda, but
this felt slightly different because the message at the end of documentary
is a call for volunteers.
I'm not saying we should act on this as Ubuntu-be, but I figured there are
some people on this mailinglist who, just like me, do want to get involved
in this project.
There is a facebook event to "coördinate" the action on april 20:

I do believe this is relevant for the Ubuntu community, because the
children of today (no matter from where they are) are the ubuntu users of
tomorrow.
That and mainly the fact that every child deserves a decent childhood and
an even better future drive me to send you all this mail.

I'd like to apologize though for propagating through this medium, it just
seemed the most convenient way to reach all interested fellow ubuntueros.

Kind regards

Fair Aalst 4 March

<pre>Hi all,

As some of you might know, we attend a fair in Aalst on the fourth of
March. Since there isn't any real eventbox near Aalst, we might want to
think about a way to get an eventbox (or parts of it) to Aalst.
Anyhow, you can find more information on the wiki:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/BelgianTeam/ComputerFairs/Aalst_2012-03-04

But since there are some things that have to be taken care off, I'd like to
ask that others who aren't on the wiki but are going to come to Aalst, say
so. Then I'll include them in the mail to all participants.
One of the "problems" is the fact that we don't have any CD's yet for the
event. So JanC was wondering if somebody that goes to Antwerp this weekend
could take them from there to Aalst next week.
&lt; at &gt;nero: I understand you'll be attending both fairs, would it be possible to
take those CD's with you?

I'll make a to do list, but due to the late hour I think I'll be doing that
first thing in the morning!

Grts

Ubuntu For Android!

<pre>Hey guys, just spotted this:

http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2012/02/watch-ubuntu-for-android-in-action/

I went crazy when I saw it. Basically you're android phone can run Ubuntu,
and when you connect it to a desktop it will show you Ubuntu Desktop
running Unity2D, and when you connet it to a tv it will give you the
Ubuntu-tv interface.
I don't know what you guys think of this, but I think it's big!

small project for C++ programmer

<pre>Hi there,

I have a friend who is looking for a C++ programmer for a small project.
Shouldn't take more than a couple of hours.

It's for programming a graphic representation of a counter that calculates
2 values 600 times in 10 seconds.
The counter is used in a simulation module that enhances the simulation
process of the existing machine, but needs to stay within certain
limitations according to the capacity of the machine. Sample non-verified
C++ code will be provided. The code needs to be debugged and a graphic
representation for two parameters needs to be added: displacement (Y)
versus time (X - 10 secs) and Roll Angle (Y) versus time (X - 10 secs).
FYI the program counts 390 lines.
The code should run on a MAC.

Let me know if you're interested by replying to my personal address, and
tell me what you would charge for such a small service.
I'll put you in touch with my friend.

Regards,
Jan.
