Good evening all,

In January the Brisbane members got together for an InstallFest during
the middle of the cycle for the 11.10 release cycle. We discussed that
we would probably like to make this a regular occasion as an addition
to the release parties. We also decided that the name InstallFest was
a bit misleading and discouraged other users from attending. Therefore
I propose we change the name to "Ubuntu-AU Workshop", "Ubuntu-AU Open
Day" or something similar and market it as something people can come
to for help installing, general problems or just curious. I would also
like to suggest that other locations join in on the action and create
their own local events.

So from what I can tell we need to do the following:
* Decide what to call it
* Organise co-ordinators and volunteers for each location wanting to participate
* Create loco.u.c events
* Organise a venue (we found public libraries had free meeting rooms
that were great, we also decided to pick them as close to free parking
and public transport as possible).
* Market the events
* Hold the events

Thoughts, comments or questions anyone?

I'm thinking about becoming more active on IRC, but I don't really
know what IRC client I should be using.
I've tried XChat in the past and it's ok but kinda clunky, I'm
currently using both Empathy and the Freenode Webchat, but neither are
perfect in their own ways.

So, any suggestions?

I'm after something that integrates nicely with Unity so I can have
alerts in the messaging menu etc :)

Thanks,

Good evening all,

The good folk at Canonical have sent out the team's CDs for the 12.04
release. This means the team has 250 CDs to distribute and promote
Ubuntu with. If anyone has any creative (or boring for that matter,)
ways to use the CDs to actively promote Ubuntu in the community please
email the list. The CDs are all the 32 bit version of Ubuntu and a
small number of Ubuntu Server CDs as well.

I'm quite happy to post out CDs for users to use at computer fairs,
school expos, university open days, community gatherings, etc. All I
ask to ensure that they don't end up sitting on someone's shelf
gathering dust before they get too old to use (we're already looking
forward to 12.10!). Feel free to post ideas on the list, if you
already have an idea on your mind it might be worth fleshing it out
into an event on the team's loco.ubuntu.com page.

Lets get cracking!

Hi,

I've just had a session at UDS and we really need to ramp up on the
author/editor side of the Ubuntu Manual. I'd like to hold an online
session < at > 2pm NSW/QLD/VIC/TAS Saturday 19th May to target some of the
areas that need work. A significant portion of the Manual can be left
as-in and thus needs basic proof-reading to check if certain terms or
screenshots need to be updated.

The ubuntu manual is on launchpad at lp:ubuntu-manual, only a couple
of megabytes to download.

If you have an hour or so on that Saturday free, please come along to
#ubuntu-au on irc.freenode.net

Thanks,

Hi all,

I'm in a session at the Ubuntu Developer Summit about the Ubuntu
Manual http://ubuntu-manual.org/ which you may remember was started
some time ago with the goal of producing a high quality pdf (and
printed) manual for Ubuntu desktop.

They are looking for new blood to help author and edit the manual for
12.04 to be released around the time of 12.04.1 (July 19th). However
we're trying to figure out why we don't have more contributors and
what may be holding people back.

So my question to you is:-

"If you have considered contributing to Ubuntu Manual, but haven't,
what's stopped you?"

Some reasons might include:-

* Lack of time
* Lack of motivation
* Lack of skill
* Difficult to use tools

Or something we're missing. We'd really like to know in case it's
something we can fix. If you're interested in contributing, please do
let us know, and we can help you get involved.

Cheers,

Joel Pickett (in the style of Alan Pope)!

PyCon Australia 2012's Call for Proposals closes this week!

This week marks your last opportunity to submit proposals to present
at PyCon Australia 2012, the national conference for the Python
programming community, to be held on August 18 and 19 in Hobart,
Tasmania.

The deadline for proposal submission is Friday May 4, 2012, and more
information can be found at http://pycon-au.org/cfp

PyCon Australia is an excellent opportunity to share experience and
knowledge with like-minded Python developers from all walks of life --
we attract professional developers from industry, government, science
and education, along with enthusiast and student developers.
Presentations can be targeted at all skill levels, on any topic
related to Python programming.

If you're a first-time developer, don't be afraid to submit a
presentation -- we're a community-driven conference, and we have a
focus on building the next generation of Python programmers.

Don't know what to present about? PyCon Australia co-organiser,
Christopher Neugebauer recently listed the results of PyCon Australia
2012's Call for Topics on his blog [1]; we'd love it if you used these
suggestions to help shape your submission.

We can't wait to see your proposals.

Is there any need to optimise an install on SD or USB?

Good evening all,

I'm going to be installing 12.04 on either an SD card or USB drive for
use with a laptop, it has an inbuilt card reader so the SD card sounds
pretty easy to carry around right about now. I have done a bunch of
research on seeing if I need to optimise the install in any way, for
example moving read/write intensive or swap partitions to the ram.
Unfortunately a lot of the data I'm finding is all in the 2007- 2009
range and the only recent data I can find is arguments over if it's
still required or not.

So has anyone had any experience or seen information that would help
deciding if and if so what optimisations are still needed to be
carried out?

begins.
I follow the simple guide via the 'upgrade' link to find: 'Upgrade from
Ubuntu 11.10 to 12.04LTS"
I go the the link 'read the upgrade notes' (for versions other than
11.10). There are many listed but none that refer to upgrading 10.04LTS
to 12.04LTS.
The paper-chase seems to end here with no result.
I believe that upgrading should be done with care using the right
instructions depending on the system version being used so I am
reluctant to take a punt and mess things up.
Surely I don't need to upgrade from 10.04LTS to 10.10, then to 11.04 and
then to 11.10 before upgrading to 12.04LTS?
I would be grateful for advice from members.
PS My Update Manager does not advise that 12.04LTS is ready to load.

Hello List,

Sorry for not getting organised before now but I would like to suggest
we have a release party tonight.
There is a monthly tech meet up similar to a lug but not linux
specific happening tonight so i have suggested we have a release party
after.

IF you are in adelaide please come to the tech meetup:

After the talks we will find a bar and chat ubuntu.

Feel free to contact me if you need any details or questions.

Regards,

Daniel

March team report - Ubuntu-AU

Hi all (I hope the formatting is OK),

There were a few things that were happening in March for Ubuntu-AU:

   - The March IRC meeting was held on the 11th March and attended by 9
   people.
   -

   JoelPickett <https://wiki.ubuntu.com/JoelPickett> and
JoelAddison<https://wiki.ubuntu.com/JoelAddison> held
events on the weekend of the
UbuntuGlobalJam<https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuGlobalJam>.
The events included: translation, wiki clean-up, localisation and artwork
   jam
   - the translation jam aimed to fix up strings that had been
mistranslated and to tackle some of the en_AU packages on Launchpad
      -

the wiki jam had participants cleaning up and updating the subpages
      of the AustralianTeam <https://wiki.ubuntu.com/AustralianTeam> wiki
      - the localisation jam finalised the iso defaults for the en_AU
      Ubuntu CD
      - the artwork jam encouraged participants to create Ubuntu materials
      - including posters, flyers and other Ubuntu-related artwork
   -

Two release parties have been set for the
PrecisePangolin<https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PrecisePangolin> cycle.
Sydney is hosting an event on the Saturday, 21st April and Brisbane on the
6th May. Details for these events can be found at: ubuntu-au loco
events<http://loco.ubuntu.com/teams/ubuntu-au/events>
   [1].
   - gorilla on IRC shared a project he's working on, aptly named
   LazerCombat <https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LazerCombat> - Paintball,
   lazer-style <http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XNWNEiOcve8> [2].
