Greetings Docs-Team,
We have been working through the input from UDS-Q, and feedback from
translation team, and trying to figure out the best point for the
DocumentationStringFreeze [1] for the Quantal cycle.

Based on the input so far, Sept. 20 looks like the best fit
for the Documentation String freeze, this puts it 1 month after
FeatureFreeze, and will still give the translation team some time to
get the translations ready by Oct 9th. [2]

Anyone see any issues with making the DocumentationStringFreeze be
Sept. 20th? Other factors that need to be considered?

Thanks, Kate

Issue with PostfixBasicSetupHowto on help.ubuntu.com

I was stepping through the document:

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/PostfixBasicSetupHowto

It is a great document that has helped me expand my knowledge into a realm
that I know very little about. But I ran into an exception that is not
covered by the document. The nature of this exception leads me to believe
there is a shortcoming in the document.

In the section, "Testing Courier POP3". when I follow the steps, I get:

+OK Hello there.
user fmaster
+OK Password required.
pass XcXcXcXc
-ERR chdir Maildir failed

(Where XcXc is the password I created for the user in this instance)

Never before has there been any mention of a Maildir or about changing to
it. Seems to be an oversight. I performed every prior step with a
positive response from the software, so up to this point, everything has
been correct.

The following step regarding "Testing Courier IMAP" similarly doesn't
work. Every prior test performed in the document has been successful.

I tried sending an e-mail to the contact at the bottom of the page, but
fossedu.org no longer exists. I didn't get a bounce from the other
address, but I'm not optimistic. God only knows when these e-mails were
last used.

Hello all:

I would like to propose a possible tag for us to use in the case of
migration.

"Do Not Migrate"

This tag would be used so that the automated migration system would not
import old articles.

The other option is to delete the pages, but that would require an
admin. The tags would allow more people to help with the process.

Thanks,

breaking up long pages

Hi :)

Someone doing excellent work at breaking-up a very long page has asked my advice on a few issues. It's just occurred to me that people or other pages might have deep-links into specific parts of the page. By deep-links i mean links that have a # in order to reach a specific part of the page, eg
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Grub2#Displays

Would it be best to keep the old titles that were on the long page and then just put a new deep-link there to the new place? eg
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Grub2#Set_menu_font_and_highlight_colors
to link to the relevant section on the new sub-page
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Grub2/Displays#Setting_Menu_Font_Colors

After the page has been broken-up is it possible to find all the other pages that might have deep-links into the original long page? Are there other complications and if so are there good ways around those problems?

Am i being too pedantic and harsh? After all, if deep-links break the person does get to the right page but is shown the beginning of the page where the Table-of-Contents is rather than being given exactly what they expect.

Regards from
Tom :)

Hello:

I am interested in becoming a member of the team.

I have:

- read the Wiki Guide.
- made significant contributions to the help wiki by way of edits to
pages
- demonstrated an understanding of the issues that can arise from
deleting and renaming pages, and how to avoid them

Thanks,

Grub2 Page Revision

With the introduction of a new LTS, it's time to rewrite the Grub2 page. The original page was created when there was little documentation on Grub 2 from any source. The page has expanded and is currently far too long.

I have some ideas about the best way to make the revision and ask for your input but would appreciate your opinions.

1. My suggestion is to divide Grub 2 documentation into separate pages.
      a.
Grub2 (existing page):
      Overview
Grub2/Installation&Configuration
The Grub 2 files, how to configure them, installing Grub 2, updating from Grub Legacy,
Grub2/Booting
How to work with the G2 menu from the boot menu.
Grub2/Submenus
Recently created. How to use the submenu feature.
Grub2/Troubleshooting
Working with the G2 menu (rescue mode), purging/reinstalling, terminal operations
Grub2/Themes
Or should it be called "Displays" since it could also cover simple backgrounds, colors, etc.

Other pages which I've created (*) or seen (!) in the Ubuntu Forums tutorial section and could migrate:
      Grub2/Passwords (*)
      Grub2/BootingISOs (*)
      Grub2/CustomMenus (!)

Other pages which are needed but which I have no technical knowledge to contribute:
Grub2/UEFI
Grub2/RAID

      b. Recommendations for other G2 pages?

2. I also have questions about the titles.
      a. Is the "Grub2/xxx" a good convention (or at least acceptable)?
      b. Is a title like "Installation&Configuration" too long. I'd guess so, but I don't want too many pages so would prefer not to split them up. Anyone have a better idea and/or title?
      b. Is there a better way of setting this up?

3. Implementation.
At the moment, my intent would be to copy/revise a new page coexisting with the current page. I would place a note at the start of the existing section for which a new page has been created asking viewers to visit the new page and make any additions/corrections there. Once the new page was complete, the existing section would be replaced by a link to the new page.

Thanks for the inputs.

UI/String Freeze Exception: Ubuntu Software Center recommendationsopt-in panel text

Hello Ubuntu Docs team!

Unfortunately we need to make a string change in the lobby opt-in panel
text for the new recommendations feature in Ubuntu Software Center in
Precise. The corresponding bug is here:

  https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/986437

From the bug description:

We need to remove the word "anonymous" from the opt-in panel text, per
mpt's comment #5 in bug 967064:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/software-center/+bug/967064/comments/5

We need to do this part of the recommendations opt-in process for the
user currently requires an SSO account and for the user to be logged
into this account. Having this information greatly improves the accuracy
of the personalized recommendations that they will receive, particularly
after they have rated some of their applications. Given this
requirement, even though the list of uploaded packages is not tracked in
any way, it is nevertheless not accurate to use the word "anonymous" in
the opt-in text, so we want to remove it.

The diff is very simple:

     TURN_ON_RECOMMENDATIONS_TEXT = _(u"Turn On Recommendations")
     RECOMMENDATIONS_OPT_IN_TEXT = _(u"To make recommendations, "
                  "Ubuntu Software Center "
- "will occasionally send to Canonical an anonymous list "
+ "will occasionally send to Canonical a list "
                  "of software currently installed.")

     def __init__(self, catview):

Many thanks and my sincere apologies for asking for this change at the
very end of the cycle!

And, as always, thank you for your good work!!

Best regards,
Gary

<http://202.204.128.124/%7Earon/ubuntu-docs/zh-CN/index.html>
are not localized. I'm willing to update them, but need to confirm some
details and crowdsource others:

1) the bzr branch to do this seems to be
https://code.launchpad.net/~ubuntu-core-doc/ubuntu-docs/precise
<https://code.launchpad.net/%7Eubuntu-core-doc/ubuntu-docs/precise>
    Right?

2) Which particular images should be done? Do they have any special
requirements, such as image format or size?

3) If anyone has a means to automate this through some scripting and
wants to point me at it, I'd appreciate it.

4) Within reason, if there are other images you would like to see
localized, please suggest them. I can't promise I'll get to all of them,
but I'll do what I can.

ubuntu server guide ldap suggested amendment

Hi,

In both the ldap and samba/ldap guides, there are points in
there that ask to edit the ldif files to remove the index entries, i've
written this command line that saves having to do this:

sed -i
'1s/{[^}]*}//g;1s|$|,cn=schema,cn=config|;3s/{[^}]*}//g' *.ldif

Hopefully renders on in the mailing list, but basically does exactly
what the guide states, but can be applied on mass to all ldif files
used.

The following bit removes the last 7 lines of the ldif files:

sed -i -e :a -e '$d;N;2,7ba' -e 'P;D' *.ldif

the guide states the
content varies, but i've always seen it as 7 lines, so should be ok.

benefit of this method is that if you are bolting on an integration
with something like zarafa, you dont have to edit each file manually.

I don't mind outlining what each bit of the command does if you're not
sure.

incomplete.

I do wish to contribute my findings to the community. But given the
general cleanness of the Ubuntu Wiki pages, I get the impression that
just bluntly inserting a link to my own docs would be frowned upon.
However, haven't got the time to properly merge both documents.

What do I do now? Still insert a link? Copy my docs to a completely new
Wiki entry?
Any advice much appreciated.

I discovered that https://help.ubuntu.com/11.10/ubuntu-help/ and
https://help.ubuntu.com/12.04/ubuntu-help/ site directories are
available in several different languages, but there is no way to switch
between them on the site itself.

Currently, to access them, you need to manipulate Accept-Language
request header in your browser. In Firefox, it can be done
(1) by editing intl.accept_languages preference at about:config page,
(2) in Preferences->Content->Languages window or
(3) by using an extension like Quick Locale Switcher.

I think it's better practice for multi-language site to provide some
control to select the language. It will make difference when a user is
not sure he/she understands a sentence in his/her current language
correctly and wants to consult the same page in another, or suspects a
translation mistake. It will make checking translations for mistakes
on-line faster and easier.

You can see there's an inlline style that allows you to control the
style of text inside a table
See the moinmoin wiki < at > http://moinmo.in/HelpOnTables

I admit that it's mainly my own pages that seem to be affected, but it
looks like hardcoding a style for all tables will only be helpful for
the pages that actually need that particular style. And it actually
prevents the feature for people who actually need it.

Not sure how to procede, usually I file a bug report for these things.
Thanks for your patience,
kanliot

Precise language pack post-release schedule

Hi all,

Just a heads up that I've started preparing the post-release language
pack schedule for Precise. It's currently just a draft, which you can
find here:

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Translations/PreciseLanguagePackReleaseSchedule

The important bit for now is the first language pack. As some of you
might know, the Canonical PES team and the Simplified Chinese community
have been working to deliver a fully translated desktop. The first part,
the UI translations, has been finished, but the second part,
documentation, will be delivered in the first language pack update,
which I've scheduled for the 11th of May.

To translators: you'll see that there is 1 day of testing initially, as
opposed to 1 week, as usual. This is because the 11th of May is a hard
deadline for the Simplified Chinese project. But in any case, I've
created another milestone following that, to have an extra week as usual
and have the language packs uploaded for those who don't have time for
testing in 1 day.

To the docs team: in order to meet the schedule, would you be able to do
an upload of a new version of ubuntu-docs with updated translations on
the 7th of May? The date is critical for releasing the language pack in
time. If you think it's not possible, please let me know as soon as
possible and I'll coordinate with someone from the desktop team to do
the upload.

Thanks!

Cheers,
David.

Poster for converting to Unity

Hello

This may a be a little late, but I there is something that I'd like to
propose.

Keith Burnett has recently created a thrilling and professional poster,
targeted at people migrating from 10.04 (Gnome) to 12.04 (Unity).

In my opinion, it is also excellent for other people new to Unity, e.g.
from Windows, Mac or a different distro.

Have a look at the latest version, available in this post on Ubuntu Forums:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=11872878#post11872878

In the true spirit of Ubuntu, Keith has released the poster with an open
license.

*Now, here is the reason I am posting this message:*

I strongly believe that this poster would be a strongly beneficial
addition to the Ubuntu download page.

It would allow people new to Unity to say, "Ah, that's how it works!"
instead of feeling bewildered and upset.

It will certainly help to enhance Ubuntu's reputation.

Opinions, please?

Paddy

P.S. There is still a minor omission that I'm discussing with Keith, and
I shall let you know as soon as it is fixed -- today, I hope.

=== modified file 'softwarecenter/ui/gtk3/widgets/recommendations.py'
--- softwarecenter/ui/gtk3/widgets/recommendations.py 2012-04-15

< at >< at > -145,7 +145,7 < at >< at >
     TURN_ON_RECOMMENDATIONS_TEXT = _(u"Turn On Recommendations")
     RECOMMENDATIONS_OPT_IN_TEXT = _(u"To make recommendations, "
                  "Ubuntu Software Center "
- "will occasionally send to Canonical an anonymous list "
+ "will occasionally send to Canonical a list "
                  "of software currently installed.")

     def __init__(self, catview):

Many thanks and my sincere apologies for asking for this change at the
very end of the cycle!

And, as always, thank you for your good work!!

Best regards,
Gary
