I've been an Ubuntu/Xubuntu user since 2006. I also participate in many
Ubuntu LoCo activities in my local group and also do a lot of bug
reporting. I'm not a programmer or developer. I'm just an astronomer
finishing my grade studies and work at the Los Molinos Astronomical
Observatory here in Uruguay in which use Ubuntu as our main image
processing platform. I do a little programming maybe in python and
mostly science-oriented languages. I would be glad to here what you are
up to in this mailing list and maybe suggest things for improving XFCE
desktop and Xubuntu distro.

I kind test things with myself and my wife that knows absolutely nothing
about computers and just wants the PC to work and be easy to use. This
perspective is different from maybe a skilled programmer or user. I also
teach basic computer course in a NGO, to old people in the 50-70 age
range and we use Ubuntu Linux for this. So i get a lot of feedback from
very inexperienced users that developers maybe want to hear about.

I just and this mail by congratulate you for the great job you all do.

I've set up a Doodle poll [1] to find the best meeting times for the
Quantal cycle.

A few things to note before you go adding your info:
* All times are in UTC
* Xubuntu team members, please add your nick or name along with your
submission, because you being able to attend is most important
* Please add any time slots that *usually* work for you (Doodle only
allows specific dates to be set, but we'll be using the same times for
the whole cycle)
* Doodle starts the week with Sunday, so be careful with your submission!

And finally,
* All times are in UTC

Cheers and GO!

<pre>Hello people.

The brainstorming for the Roadmap has ended.

By definiton, the team will need to approve, decline or postpone the
blueprints during this week. Schedule-wise it looks like it's going to
be the beginning of next week though.

Now we need assignees for the blueprints – both for the features and for
the default application changes.

Those people who sent emails to the list saying they could do a bit of
this and that – now is the perfect time to step in! Just edit the
"Assignee"-column on any of the items [1] in the Roadmap page [2]. Those
who are just lurking on the list, this is your time too to step up.
Remember that items with no assignee will most probably not be
implemented to the next release.

I'll get back to you all later this week.

Cheers,
Pasi

[1] Feature-blueprints have usually only one assignee, default
application blueprints can have several assignees

An explanation for a misunderstanding

<pre>Since there seems to be passionate about "Charlie being locked out of
xubuntu-users" [1], let me try to correct the misunderstanding.

Nobody's been locked out of anything intentionally. Nobody wants to stop
other people accessing anything, especially if they are accessing
because they want to contribute to the project.

The reason why Charlie was seemingly locked out from the moderator panel
is that I had changed some settings for the list – most importantly,
updated the admin password, and while I was at that, moved people
(including Charlie) from the admin group to the moderators team (they
shouldn't get as much unnecessary post now, for starters).

I have now updated the moderator password too and sent email to Charlie
to both correct the misunderstanding and access the technical issue
behind it.

What comes to me "taking over" mentioned in Charlie's post [1], this is
something what I'm expected to do by the community, to make sure we can
keep up with the quality standards set by the previous project leaders,
if not improve them. Again, I'm not trying to stop anyone from
contributing, I'm just doing a regular maintenancy check for any tools
we are using.

While all of the things mentioned above might seem something they are
not, for example seemingly locking somebody out of somewhere, none of
these issues are intentional or hoped. In the future, I hope members of
the community would check any issues with me or any other concerning
members before throwing accusations out in the public.

I'm sorry that this misunderstanding has grown into absurd proportions.
I'm also sorry for any inconvenience it might have caused.

If you think there is still something wrong, please email this mailing
list or me personally, and I'll take actions where appropriate. If you
know there is any place where people still live in the misunderstanding,
please feel free to link to this email (in the xubuntu-devel archive,
for example).

Cheers,

The Hibernate option IS available in the settings for "On AC Power".

Also, when running on battery power, if I go to the main main and click
"Log Out", I'm presented with choices Log Out, Restart, Shutdown, and
Suspend. Hibernate is not an available option. With the laptop, I always
prefer to hibernate it to save the most power when I want to restore my

for future login" and then just click Shut Down.

And in case anyone asks, I did download and install all the updates this

I'm a fan of Xubuntu and using it exclusively since 10.04 LTS.

I would like to suggest a more colorful set of desktop backgrounds. The all blue and grey theme is nice for the defaults, but changing the background is one of the first things almost every user do.

I think we need themes like nature, landscapes, plants, abstract and they should have a good balance of the color spectrum, including reds, yellows and greens (not all at the same time necessarily).

Let's not repeat what LinuxMint did with the green. Their theme is nice at first sight, but it looks like the blue pixels of LCD screen are all burned out.

Thanks for the oportunity,

<pre>Hello Xubuntu developers!

My name is Andrej Znidarsic and I am a member of Ubuntu translations
coordinators team.
As you might know untill now only packages in main have been translatable
in Launchpad and shipped in language packs.

Recently we added a feature to give universe packages an opt-in
possibility to be translatable in Launchpad and their
translations shipped in language packs. This means translators would be
able to use Launchpad's infrastructure for translations and updated
translations will be shipped as SRU after the final version is released.

In order to enable a universe package to be translatable in Launchpad,
only two modifications are needed in the package (additional info on the
wiki URL [1]):

1. Add X-Ubuntu-Use-Langpack: yes to debian/control's source record
2. Use dh_translations to generate a POT file during the build process.

I realise it is quite late in the release cycle, and that it might not
be possible to do this for 12.04, but would you be interested/have time
to do these modifications and enable translations for the xfce4* source
packages
in Launchpad?

Thanks!

Cheers,
Andrej

Todays changes in the xubuntu-website Launchpad team

<pre>Hello,

I made small changes to the xubuntu-website team on Launchpad today.
From now on, the Xubuntu website team is a member of the Xubuntu team
(like Xubuntu developers), not the other way around.

This affects the access rights to the xubuntu.org administration panel.
The members of the xubuntu-website LP team will still have the
administrator role. However, anyone in the xubuntu-team will have the
contributor role. This means they will be only able to edit and delete
their own blog articles.

Rather than deleting any rights to access the administration panel, I
wanted to let the xubuntu-team have the access to edit posts to allow
and encourage a more from-community driven blogging.

While this is more restrictive, it is a step towards a more controlled
administrating. Generally, I would like to make the Xubuntu team more
inclusive rather than exclusive, which is a part of the reasoning for
this change.

In the future, we can look at creating a custom role to be linked with
the xubuntu-team, including editing rights to pages and others' posts.

About Xubuntu Artwork

<pre>Hi everybody:

# About Artwork

I am writing to offer some suggestions and ideas for Xubuntu 12.04.

First of all, I think the Xubuntu Artwork is very separate from the
original design of Ubuntu. I think it would be a good idea, that include
Xubuntu also Ambiance &amp; Radiance by default. It would also be positive
default Xfwm buttons were left default, as in OS X and Unity.

Thus, a user wishing to leave Unity and want to try Xubuntu, you'll find
a similar interface. I do not know what the idea of the design team
Xubuntu, but it would be good to rate the possibility of a similar
appearance to that of Ubuntu. Just a suggestion. In fact, the job of
carrying Ambiance &amp; Radiance is already done for Xfce.

http://gnome-look.org/content/show.php/Ambiance+% 26 + Radiance + Themes
+ for + Xfce% 26LXDE? content = 146674

# About logo

Another topic I wanted to talk, is about the new logo for Xubuntu. I'm
no designer, but when I look I do not really show anything related to
Xfce. The previous logo gave us more or less a better idea. I made a
proposal, which leave them below.

# About Applications

There are some applications which I think can be replaced with more
light and thus do not depend on Gnome.

Gcalctool can be replaced with Galculator
Evince can be replaced with ePDFView
Ristretto has greatly improved but may be replaced by Mirage.

# About Issues

Problems encountered in Beta 1:

I guess for being a Beta, all problems will comment below normal. I
should also clarify that he had the option to upgrade approximately 300
Mb of packages, updating that maybe some of them managed, but my
connection would not let me check.

Something I did not like is that I went out anywhere the network icon,
and you have to configure the menu "Preferences. The icons and desktop
items are not updated automatically when added or deleted, so we must
update them manually with F5. The menu does not have the option to run,
and the application that is responsible for this action, sometimes left
by pressing [Alt] + [F2] or delayed more than 10 seconds to run.

Changing the keyboard layout, I had to close several applications for
changes to take effect. The context menu includes an entry for Search in
the folder in which we are but just does not work that option. Trying to
remove drivers from NVidia (and I use Intel) these drag Xubuntu Desktop.

Xubuntu also includes too many language packs, you do not understand if
you end the LiveCD runs in English. Sure, I guess when you are
installing, and using another language, English and Spanish are not the
only ones on our planet, but I think there should be an option for you,
after installing, removal of unnecessary language as our preferences

# End
Let me clarify two things:

1 - All these suggestions are based on my personal taste.
2 - My English is not very good, so I had to use a translator.

Best regards.
