Feature Freeze this Thursday

Dear Developers,

This is a short, but pointed, reminder that Feature Freeze is scheduled for
this Thursday, August 28.

This means that all of your Intrepid-targeted specs should be either at Beta
Available or Postponed by the end of day on Wednesday. Please make sure to
update the status of your specs. You should check that packages you care
about are at a version suitable for release.

Requests for freeze exceptions for main should be filed as bugs in
Launchpad against the relevant package (or just "Ubuntu" if the
package is not available yet). Once the bug is filed and the necessary
information is available, please subscribe the ubuntu-release team.

For universe, the motu-release team will approve new packages and upstream
version freeze exceptions between now and the Beta.

Please see this wiki page for full details:

Hello everybody,

I'm extremely pleased to announce the second Ubuntu Developer Week! From
Sep 1st to Sep 5th we're going to have a great time in #ubuntu-classroom
on irc.freenode.net.

Digg It: http://digg.com/linux_unix/Second_Ubuntu_Developer_Week_announced

There are Wiki docs, MOTU Videos, MOTU Interviews and we're seeing more
and more contributors each day. This is all good and well, but there's
nothing like talking to real people, asking real questions in a
real-time environment.

The Ubuntu Developer Week is designed to give you an overview of what's
going on in the Ubuntu Developer world. Speak to the developers, learn,
ask questions and finally realise "It’s true, I *can* make a difference
by helping out here."

Check out the timetable, the session details and how to join in at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuDeveloperWeek

Have a great day and see you next week!
Daniel

Minutes from the Technical Board meeting, 2008-08-26

Board members: Mark Shuttleworth, Matt Zimmerman
Apologies: Scott James Remnant (holiday)
Attendees: Oliver Grawert, Emmet Hikory

== Status of cdrtools discussion ==

Mark has offered to obtain a legal opinion from the Software Freedom Law
Center, on the condition that Joerg Schilling will agree up front to accept
their determination.

We are waiting for Joerg to respond to this proposal. Mark suggested that
we also involve Sun in the discussion, as they are shipping cdrtools.

Action: Mark to contact Sun legal regarding cdrtools

== Gobby co-maintenance with Debian ==

Philipp Kern, upstream developer and Debian maintainer of gobby, and MOTU,
is interested in helping to maintain gobby in Ubuntu main.

We agreed that this is reasonable, and that Phillipp's existing
qualifications are sufficient to grant upload privileges.

Action: Matt to arrange upload rights for gobby for pkern

== Revisiting limited upload privileges for kernel and printing packages ==

The Technical Board granted core-dev privileges to two developers (Tim
Gardner and Till Kamppeter) interested in working with specific packages in
main, with the proviso that they were to follow standard sponsorship
processes for other packages.

Now that Launchpad has the capability to implement this type of
access control directly, we agreed to transition these developers from
ubuntu-core-dev to per-package upload rights.

Action: Matt to follow up with Tim and Till

== Board membership/nominations ==

The Technical Board is in search of new members, and suggestions from the
community have been received and reviewed. The next step is to contact the
top candidates (most were suggested by third parties) and ask whether they
are willing to serve in the position.

Action: Mark to contact the candidates and confirm their interest

Launchpad 2.1.8: Bugzilla and Trac plugin beta now open, plus karma for commits

We in the Launchpad team are proud to announce the 21st August
2008 release of Launchpad 2.1.8!

This release brings two items of good news for anyone who
commits code to branches registered in Launchpad:

* Karma for commits: Launchpad now awards karma for code
   commits to project branches.

* Feeds of each person's code commits: as well as a feed that
shows which branches you work on, Launchpad now gives you a
feed of all the commits you've made to branches in Launchpad.

To subscribe to someone's branch commits feed, go to their code
overview page - visit https://code.launchpad.net/people/+me for
your own - and click the feed icon in your browser's address
bar.

There's more about karma for commits in our blog post:

http://news.launchpad.net/cool-new-stuff/karma-for-commits

Bugzilla and Trac plugin beta now open
---------------------------------------

Sharing the same bug report and comment history between
communities is one of Launchpad's most useful features.

With the beta of our new plugins for Bugzilla and Trac now open,
projects who run their own external bug trackers can now also
share bug comment histories with Launchpad.

Graham Binns from the Launchpad Bugs team blogs about how to
take part in the beta, if you run a Bugzilla or Trac instance:

http://news.launchpad.net/?p=115

Regular updates on the Launchpad API beta
------------------------------------------

If you're following the beta of the Launchpad API, you can now
get regular updates on what's new from Leonard Richardson, one
of the Launchpad team working on the API.

Leonard's posts are in the Launchad News blog's API category:

http://news.launchpad.net/category/api

Full details of Launchpad 2.1.8
--------------------------------

Full details of the features and bug fixes that went into this
release are on the Launchpad 2.1.8 milestone page:

https://launchpad.net/launchpad-bazaar/+milestone/2.1.8

If you come across any bugs in Launchpad, please report them
here:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/launchpad/+filebug

We'll be releasing Launchpad 2.1.9 on the 17th September. In the
mean time, join us each Thursday at 18.00 UTC in

The Technical Board met for a regularly scheduled session[0] on 2008-07-15.
Members Matt Zimmerman, Mark Shuttleworth and Scott James Remnant were in
attendance.

== cdrtools ==

Joerg Schilling has initiated a discussion with the Technical Board about
the possible re-inclusion of cdrtools in Ubuntu. cdrtools was removed from
Ubuntu 8.04 and later[1] due to concerns which were raised regarding its
licensing.

Decision: Further discussion is required to clarify the issues
Action: Mark will speak with Joerg at OSCON to discuss

== DKMS ==

DKMS was moved into main, which meant that Mario Limonciello was no longer
able to maintain it, as he is not a core developer. Launchpad is now
capable of granting upload privileges on a per-package basis, and it was
agreed that we would use this as an opportunity to test that functionality.

If this trial is successful, this arrangement may be used more widely.

Decision: Agreed to try per-package upload privileges
Action: Matt to make it so

== Filesystem checking / AutoFsck ==

A suggestion was made to the technical board that Ubuntu could be smarter
about how and when it performs filesystem integrity checks (fsck).

Decision: This should be discussed more widely in the developer community
Action: Scott to start a thread on ubuntu-devel/-discuss

== Technical Board membership ==

The Technical Board is seeking nominations for new members. According to
our founding documents, "Appointments to the board are made by Mark
Shuttleworth subject to confirmation by a vote amongst the maintainers."

Decision: Solicit nominations from the community
Action: Mark to solicit nominations on an appropriate mailing list[2]
Action: Matt to update http://www.ubuntu.com/community/processes/techboard to reflect the current composition of the board[3]

network manager 0.7 bug reporting + 3G (hardware) testing

Hi,

One of the important features we want to support in intrepid is
out-of-the-box 3g support [0].

Now that Network Manager 0.7 has entered the archive, I’d like to to
ask you to test your 3g hardware with it and report your findings to
the 3G Hardware page on the wiki [1]. We want to hear about all results –
good and bad ones. Just remember to open a bug in launchpad and link
it to your result on that wiki page.

How to test
-------------

If you are running intrepid, you just need to apt-get upgrade to get
the current network-manager 0.7. Alternatively, you can also use the
Network Manager PPA [2] which usually has even more recent snapshots
in it.

If you are using hardy, the PPA [2] is currently the only source to
track network manager 0.7 progress in ubuntu.

Furthermore, the daily intrepid livecd's [3] come with NetworkManager
0.7. Please test them as well.

Known issues
--------------

1. We have dropped all driver tweaks for now. This means you most
likely see regressions with orinoco and madwifi/ath drivers.

2. /etc/network/interfaces is currently not recognized. Better remove
all entries (except the “iface lo” one) from it to avoid confusing
behavior. The long term idea is to provide legacy backend for
network-manager that parses your /etc/network/interfaces as good as
possible. If thats not enough for some you probably will have to
uninstall network-manager. In case our legacy backend will not reach a
stable enough state for intrepid, we might go back to the dumb
“blacklisting” approach we used in hardy.

3. network manager applet has no UI to disconnect a particular
interface. So do not get confused if you suddenly are connected to
wired and wireless at the same time.

4. VPN plugins are not yet available. I added an initial package for
the openvpn plugin to the Network Manager PPA [2] (intrepid only) for
now. Once I have good feedback I will do the same for the other vpn
variants and eventually upload those packages to the real archive.

How to report bugs
--------------------

To file a bug [4], please follow the instructions below:

In general, Network Manager 0.7 bugs should have the word “0.7” in
their bug summary; in this way I can easily filter them out.

If you encounter connectivity issues with Network Manager 0.7 and your
wifi/wired setup, please attach your complete syslog taken after you
reproduced your issue.

If you see crashes of the daemon, please install the dbgsym packages
locally (libnm-glib0-dbgsym, libnm-util0-dbgsym,
network-manager-dbgsym), reproduce the crash and attach the stacktrace
that gets dumped to syslog to the bug.

If you are having 3g issues, please attach the complete output of
lshal as well.

Please remember to search the current network-manager bugs [5] to
avoid filing duplicates. However, if in doubt, open a new bug rather
than adding information to potential duplicates. Just name the bug you
think you might see a dupe off in your new bug; we will sort them out
properly.

Hi all,

The number of stable release updates sitting in -proposed is getting
larger [0]. Thank you to all of you who worked on getting SRU bug fixes
prepared and uploaded!

Packages in -proposed are ready to be moved to -updates after one week
in -proposed and 2 positive verifications (as comments in the bug
report) and no negatives. This means verification is often the
bottleneck and why we're asking for help. A short howto is:

1) read the SRU bug report and verify that you can reproduce the bug.
Many reports should have explicit test cases you can follow.
2) install the package(s) from -proposed
3) repeat step 1 and verify that the bug is fixed
4) add both positive and negative results on the SRU bug report

If you have any questions on SRU verifications please ask in
#ubuntu-testing. Steve Beattie (sbeattie) is our SRU rock star and would
love to help.

Dear developers,

In order to streamline communications across the many timezones in which
Ubuntu development takes place, we will be holding regular release meetings
on IRC in the run-up to each Intrepid milestone. These meetings are planned
for the Friday before each milestone, starting this Friday from 1500 to 1630
UTC in #ubuntu-meeting on freenode. Meeting times will be kept up-to-date
in the usual calendaring places (fridge.ubuntu.com, #ubuntu-meeting topic).

Minutes from a "kick-off" meeting last Friday can also be found here:

   https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ReleaseTeam/Meeting/2008-07-31

Java related changes in intrepid

Recently Openjdk6 was promoted to main; with today's upload of java-common,
OpenJDK6 is the default java runtime / development kit in main, on all
architectures.

- On amd64, i386, lpia and sparc, the Hotspot VM, including the JIT compiler
   is used as the VM.

- On ia64, the Hotspot VM, using the byte code interpreter is used.

- On powerpc, the Cacao VM, including the Cacao JIT compiler is used as the
   VM.

What will change for the packaging?

- Use of the default-jre-headless, default-jre, default-jdk,
default-jdk-builddep packages is preferred in favour of a specific
   runtime/jdk. The packages provide a symlink /usr/lib/jvm/default-java
to point to our preferred choice of jvm/sdk.

- build dependencies: If a source package builds a "-gcj" package, don't
stop building it yet. This will slow down the gij runtime. Instead,
use "default-jdk-builddep", which depends on the default jdk and
java-gcj-compat-dev. If no "-gcj" package is built, use default-jdk
   as a build dependency.

- dependencies: For a dependency, which doesn't require an UI, use

       default-jre-headless | java2-runtime-headless

   for all other dependencies, use

       default-jre | java2-runtime

Replace java2- with java5- only if newer language features are required.

For intrepid we strive to replace all direct references to java-gcj-compat-dev
and java-gcj-compat with references to default-*.

Intrepid Alpha 3 released

Hello Ubuntu developers,

Welcome to Intrepid Ibex Alpha-3, which will in time become Ubuntu 8.10.

Pre-releases of Intrepid are *not* encouraged for anyone needing a stable
system or anyone who is not comfortable running into occasional, even
frequent breakage. They are, however, recommended for Ubuntu developers and
those who want to help in testing, reporting, and fixing bugs.

Alpha 3 is the third in a series of milestone CD images that will be
released throughout the Intrepid development cycle. The Alpha images are
known to be reasonably free of showstopper CD build or installer bugs, while
representing a very recent snapshot of Intrepid. You can download it here:

  http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/intrepid/alpha-3/ (Ubuntu)
  http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/edubuntu/releases/intrepid/alpha-3/ (Ubuntu Education Edition)
  http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/kubuntu/releases/intrepid/alpha-3/ (Kubuntu)
  http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/xubuntu/releases/intrepid/alpha-3/ (Xubuntu)

See http://wiki.ubuntu.com/Mirrors for a list of mirrors.

Alpha 3 includes a number of software updates that are ready for large-scale
testing. Please refer to http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/intrepid/alpha3 for
information on changes in Ubuntu.

This is quite an early set of images, so you should expect some bugs. For a
list of known bugs (that you don't need to report if you encounter), please
see: http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/intrepid/alpha3

If you're interested in following the changes as we further develop
Hardy, have a look at the intrepid-changes mailing list:

  http://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/intrepid-changes

We also suggest that you subscribe to the ubuntu-devel-announce list
if you're interested in following Ubuntu development. This is a
low-traffic list (a few posts a week) carrying announcements of
approved specifications, policy changes, alpha releases, and other
interesting events.

  http://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-devel-announce

Bug reports should go to the Ubuntu bug tracker:

  https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu

Enjoy,

Main frozen for Alpha 3

Hi everyone,

We're two days before the scheduled release of Intrepid Alpha 3, so the
milestone "freeze" is now in effect. Please take care that any packages
that you upload to main between now and the Alpha 3 release will help us in
the goal of a high quality and timely alpha, and hold any disruptive or
unnecessary uploads until after the alpha is out. Again, this means the
primary focus should be on resolving these bugs:

  https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+milestone/intrepid-alpha-3

The number of bugs targeted to this early milestone is still quite small,
but there's plenty of other work to be done in getting the archive in
a consistent state so that we don't have uninstallable packages for the
alpha-3 milestone:

  https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuDevelopment/PackageArchive#Consistency

Remember that this is a "soft" freeze, so you are each responsible for
making sure your uploads are appropriate - Launchpad will not be your safety
net.

Packages that are not seeded on the CDs (i.e., most packages in universe,
with the exception of UbuntuStudio[1] and Xubuntu[2] packages) may be
uploaded as usual.

Cheers,

Alpha 3 freeze ahead

Dear Ubuntu developers,

The expected release date of Intrepid Alpha 3 is next Thursday, July 24.

Intrepid Alpha 3 will again use a "soft freeze" for main[1]. This means
that developers are asked to refrain from uploading packages between Tuesday
and Thursday which don't bring us closer to releasing the alpha, so that
these days can be used for settling the archive and fixing any remaining
showstoppers.

The (quite short) list of bugs targeted for alpha-3 can be found at:

  https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bugs?field.milestone%3Alist=1321

Per a previous announcement on this list[2] and the policy at
<https://wiki.ubuntu.com/RCBugTargetting>, this list is used for tracking
bugs that are blockers for the alpha 3 milestone. If you know of other bugs
that should be considered blockers, please nominate them for release and set
the milestone target for those bugs. If you have questions about whether a
bug should be considered a blocker, please contact a member of the release
team[3].

And of course, please also consider helping with the bugs already listed
there if you have the time.

Beyond that short list of bugs that are blockers for Alpha 3, we have those
bugs that are listed as release-critical for intrepid as a whole:

  https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/intrepid/+bugs

If you aren't among the small group of people who have milestoned bugs
assigned to you, please consider helping with those bugs, using your best
judgement with regard to the alpha freeze when uploading fixes.

Please also help us to get the archive in a consistent state again for the
alpha, as described on
<https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuDevelopment/PackageArchive#Consistency>.

Finally, if you know of new features in Intrepid that you think should be
highlighted for Alpha 3, let me or another member of the release team know
so that they can be added to the technical overview at
<https://wiki.ubuntu.com/IntrepidIbex/TechnicalOverview>.

Cheers,

keeping track of regressions during the development cycle

Dear developers,

From time to time in the course of a development cycle, it's necessary to
make changes of a temporary nature that should be revisited and (hopefully)
reverted before the final release. In order for the project as a whole to
be better able to track such changes, it would be a good idea to have a
consistent policy for how these bugs will be represented in Launchpad.

The proposed policy is that these bugs should be tracked as release-critical
bugs: nominated for the release, and targeted to the milestone before which
the change needs to be reviewed. This policy has been documented on
<https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuDevelopment> and on
<https://wiki.ubuntu.com/RCBugTargetting>.

As usual, please send any feedback to ubuntu-devel / ubuntu-devel-discuss.

Thanks,
