    <title>Ubuntu 8.10 released</title>
    <link>http://comments.gmane.org/gmane.linux.ubuntu.announce/115</link>
<description>The Ubuntu team is pleased to announce Ubuntu 8.10 Desktop and Server,
continuing Ubuntu's tradition of integrating the latest and greatest open
source technologies into a high-quality, easy-to-use Linux distribution.

Read more about the features of Ubuntu 8.10 in the following press releases:

  Desktop edition http://www.ubuntu.com/news/ubuntu-8.10-desktop
  Server edition http://www.ubuntu.com/news/ubuntu-8.10-server

Ubuntu 8.10 will be supported for 18 months on both desktops and servers.
Users requiring a longer support lifetime may choose to continue using
Ubuntu 8.04 LTS rather than upgrading to or installing 8.10.

Ubuntu 8.10 is also the basis for new 8.10 releases of Kubuntu, Xubuntu, and
UbuntuStudio:

To Get Ubuntu 8.10
------------------

To download Ubuntu 8.10, or obtain CDs, visit:

  http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/upgrading

As always, upgrades to the latest version of Ubuntu are entirely free of
charge.

We recommend that all users read the release notes, which document
caveats and workarounds for known issues. They are available at:

<title>Announcing the Release Candidate for Ubuntu 8.10</title>
    <link>http://comments.gmane.org/gmane.linux.ubuntu.announce/114</link>
<description>The Ubuntu team is pleased to announce the Release Candidate for Ubuntu 8.10
Desktop and Server. Codenamed "Intrepid Ibex", 8.10 continues Ubuntu's
proud tradition of integrating the latest and greatest open source
technologies into a high-quality, easy-to-use Linux distribution.

We consider this release candidate to be complete, stable, and suitable
for testing by any user.

Ubuntu 8.10 Desktop Edition delivers the features you need for an
increasingly mobile digital life, including 3G wireless support and
guest sessions that lets users temporarily share computers without
compromising security.

Ubuntu 8.10 Server Edition consolidates its support for virtualization with
an integrated Virtual Machine builder, and brings with it a fully-supported
Java stack and support for per-user directory encryption.

The Ubuntu 8.10 family of variants, Kubuntu, Xubuntu, UbuntuStudio, and
Mythbuntu, also reach RC status today.

The final release of Ubuntu 8.10 is scheduled for 30 October 2008 and will
be supported for 18 months on both desktops and servers. Users requiring a
longer support lifetime may choose to continue using Ubuntu 8.04 LTS, with
security support until 2011 on the desktop and 2013 on the server, rather
than upgrade to 8.10.

Before installing or upgrading to Ubuntu 8.10 please read
http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/releasenotes/810

    <link>http://comments.gmane.org/gmane.linux.ubuntu.announce/112</link>
<description>Ubuntu announced the release of 7.04 almost 18 months ago, on April
19, 2007. As with the earlier releases, Ubuntu committed to ongoing
security and critical fixes for a period of 18 months. The support
period is now nearing its end and Ubuntu 7.04 will reach end of life
on Sunday, October 19th, 2008. At that time, Ubuntu Security Notices will
no longer include information or updated packages for Ubuntu 7.04.

The supported upgrade path from Ubuntu 7.04 is via Ubuntu 7.10.
Instructions and caveats for the upgrade may be found at
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/GutsyUpgrades. Note that upgrades
to version 8.04 LTS and beyond are only supported in multiple steps, via
an upgrade first to 7.10, then to 8.04 LTS. Both Ubuntu 7.10 and Ubuntu 8.04
LTS continue to be actively supported with security updates and select
high-impact bug fixes. All announcements of official security updates for
Ubuntu releases are sent to the ubuntu-security-announce mailing list,
information about which may be found at
https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-security-announce.

Since its launch in October 2004 Ubuntu has become one of the most
highly regarded Linux distributions with millions of users in homes,
schools, businesses and governments around the world. Ubuntu is Open
Source software, costs nothing to download, and users are free to
customise or alter their software in order to meet their needs.

About Ubuntu 8.04.1 LTS
-----------------------

This is the first maintenance release of Ubuntu 8.04 LTS, which continues
to be supported with maintenance updates and security fixes until April
2011 on desktops and April 2013 on servers.

Since its release, Ubuntu 8.04 LTS has seen widespread use in a variety of
desktop and server deployments, and received a great deal of feedback from
users. The Ubuntu team has focused their efforts on resolving issues
reported by people deploying Ubuntu out in the real world, including:

 * Firefox has been upgraded to the final 3.0 release from Mozilla,
correcting a number of issues discovered during their beta test.
   (#237690)

 * The Samba client allows LANMAN authentication again, correcting
problems connecting to some NAS and older Windows servers (#209520).

 * Various problems with the FUSE interface to GNOME's new virtual file
system have been fixed, correcting certain problems accessing network
   file shares (#211205, #212789).

 * The behaviour of the timezone map in the live CD installer has been
improved, making it simpler to understand and use (#203423).

 * The "Hardware Drivers" application no longer reports the proprietary
nVidia driver as being enabled when it isn't installed (#216650).

 * The Transmission menu item is now called "Transmission BitTorrent
Client" to clearly explain its purpose (#184238).

While we have fixed a number of audio-related issues, including a
scheduler problem that caused audio stuttering under load (#188226), other
audio playback problems may still exist, because so far we have been
unable to verify a targeted fix that does not cause regressions for other
users. We will continue to investigate this, and would welcome people with
problems to provide feedback on Luke Yelavich's test packages. See
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/191027 for details.

Updated images have also been released for members of the Ubuntu family
which do not carry the LTS (Long-Term Support) label, namely Kubuntu, the
Kubuntu KDE4 remix, Gobuntu, Xubuntu, and UbuntuStudio, with images for
Mythbuntu to follow soon. These additional images are provided to the
community in response to USN-612-1, a major security vulnerability
identified earlier in the Ubuntu OpenSSL packages, to ensure that secure
installation images are available to all users in the Ubuntu family. For
more information about this security vulnerability, please see:

  http://www.ubuntu.com/usn/usn-612-1

See http://www.ubuntu.com/usn for a full list of Ubuntu security updates.
As of 2008-07-02, all updates affecting packages on the CD have been

<title>Announcing the Release Candidate for Ubuntu 8.04 LTS</title>
    <link>http://comments.gmane.org/gmane.linux.ubuntu.announce/109</link>
<description>The Ubuntu team is pleased to announce the Release Candidate for Ubuntu
8.04 LTS (Long-Term Support) on desktop and server. Codenamed "Hardy
Heron", 8.04 LTS continues Ubuntu's proud tradition of integrating the
latest and greatest open source technologies into a high-quality,
easy-to-use Linux distribution.

We consider this release candidate to be complete, stable, and suitable for
testing by any user.

Ubuntu 8.04 LTS Desktop Edition features incremental improvements to
familiar applications, with an emphasis on stability for this second Ubuntu
long-term support release, and is easier than ever to try out with the new
Wubi installer.

Ubuntu 8.04 LTS Server Edition follows in the footsteps of Ubuntu 7.10 with
even more virtualization support and security enhancements - enabling
AppArmor for more applications by default, improving protection of kernel
memory against attacks, and supporting KVM and iSCSI technologies out of the
box.

The Ubuntu 8.04 LTS family of variants, Kubuntu, Xubuntu, UbuntuStudio, and
Mythbuntu, also reach RC status today.

The final release of Ubuntu 8.04 LTS is scheduled for 24 April 2008 and will
be supported for three years on the desktop and five years on the server.

Desktop features
----------------

Improved application selection: the GNOME desktop sports a number of
improvements to the default applications, including more feature-full
clients for BitTorrent and VNC, as well as an advanced UI for mastering CDs
and DVDs.

File browsing: an enhanced filesystem layer brings greater performance and
flexibility to Nautilus, the GNOME file browser.

Pluggable audio and video output: the PulseAudio sound server is integrated
in the GNOME desktop for more flexible sound output, and a new Screen
Resolution utility allows easier configuration of multiple video displays.

Wubi installer: a new Windows-based installer option makes it easier than
ever to try out Ubuntu, letting users install a full desktop on Windows
systems without needing to partition their hard drive.

Server features
---------------

AppArmor profiles: a greater number of server applications are now protected
by default with AppArmor, a kernel technology that limits the resources an
application is allowed to access, providing added protection against
undiscovered security vulnerabilities.

Memory protection: additional protection now prevents direct access to
system memory through /dev/mem and /dev/kmem, and the lower 64K of system
memory is no longer addressable by default, changes which help to defend
against malicious code. The kernel now also loads Position Independent
Executables at randomized addresses, making it harder for application
security vulnerabilities to be exploited.

Virtualization and iSCSI: KVM is now an officially maintained option, which
combined with libvirt (CLI) and virt-manager (GUI) management tools allows
for a simple and efficient virtualization option on hardware that supports
virtualization extensions (AMD-V or Intel-VT). Mounting iSCSI targets is
now supported (including in the installer), allowing Ubuntu to interoperate
with this class of cost-efficient Storage Area Network solutions.

Ubuntu Education Edition
------------------------

Add-on configuration: Edubuntu is now provided as an add-on to Ubuntu
rather than a separate stand-alone flavor, permitting even greater reuse
of Ubuntu technologies.

Kubuntu features
----------------

Kubuntu comes with the rock solid KDE 3 for those who want a commercially
supported desktop.

For those who want something more exciting, a KDE 4 Remix is available
bringing this cutting edge new version to you first.

Please see https://wiki.kubuntu.org/HardyHeron/RC/Kubuntu for details.

Xubuntu features
----------------

Xubuntu comes with the light-weight Xfce 4.4.2 desktop environment for those
who want to a desktop that is easy to use, but places particular emphasis on
conserving system resources.

New additions to the family
---------------------------

Two new variants join us for this Ubuntu release. UbuntuStudio and
Mythbuntu have done releases separately in the past, and with Hardy Heron
we're happy to be able to welcome these fine community projects into the
main Ubuntu release process.

For a more in-depth tour of the features new in 8.04 LTS, see

<description>Ubuntu announced the release of 6.10 almost 18 months ago, on October
26, 2006. As with the earlier releases, Ubuntu committed to ongoing
security and critical fixes for a period of 18 months. The support
period is now nearing its end and Ubuntu 6.10 will reach end of life
on Friday April 25th, 2008. At that time, Ubuntu Security Notices will
no longer include information or updated packages for Ubuntu 6.10.

The supported upgrade path from Ubuntu 6.10 is via Ubuntu 7.04.
Instructions and caveats for the upgrade may be found at
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/FeistyUpgrades. Note that upgrades
to version 7.10 and beyond are only supported in multiple steps, via
an upgrade first to 7.04, then to 7.10. Both Ubuntu 7.04 and Ubuntu 7.10
continue to be actively supported with security updates and select
high-impact bug fixes. All announcements of official security updates for
Ubuntu releases are sent to the ubuntu-security-announce mailing list,
information about which may be found at
https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-security-announce.

Since its launch in October 2004 Ubuntu has become one of the most
highly regarded Linux distributions with millions of users in homes,
schools, businesses and governments around the world. Ubuntu is Open
Source software, costs nothing to download, and users are free to
customise or alter their software in order to meet their needs.

Desktop highlights
------------------

Compiz Fusion: This innovative compositing window manager enables 3-D
desktop effects that let users work with, and see, their desktops in
completely new ways.

Printer installation: In GNOME, printers are automatically configured for
use as soon as they are connected.

Free Flash support with Gnash: Ubuntu 7.10 leads the pack with a preview of
this Flash browser plugin. Although still actively in development and not
yet fully supported by Ubuntu, Gnash gives a glimpse into the future of free
Flash, bringing partial Flash support to 64-bit desktop systems.

Automated Firefox plugin installation: Beyond the addition of Gnash, Firefox
in Ubuntu now supports automatic installation of popular plugins through the
standard Ubuntu package repositories, for a richer web-browsing experience
with the integrated security support of the rest of the Ubuntu system.

Server highlights
-----------------

AppArmor: This easy-to-deploy kernel technology limits the resources an
application is allowed to access and can be used to provide an added layer
of protection against undiscovered security vulnerabilities in applications.

Pre-configured installation options: Mail Server, Print Server, Database
Server, and File Server options join existing LAMP and DNS options for
pre-configured installations, easing the deployment of common server
configurations.

Edubuntu highlights
-------------------

Faster thin clients: Thin clients have been sped up significantly through
the use of compressed images.

Updated login manager: The thin-client login manager has been completely
reworked, with themes for all Ubuntu flavors, support for autologin, and
optional unencrypted graphics transport for improved performance on slower
hardware.

Kubuntu highlights
------------------

As well as the above desktop highlights, the following new features are
specific to KDE users:

Dolphin file manager: This updated file manager gives Ubuntu users a glimpse
of the upcoming KDE 4.

Strigi desktop search: Another pillar of KDE 4 available now in Kubuntu.

Restricted-manager: Kubuntu 7.10 includes a KDE front-end for easy
installation of proprietary drivers, complementing the existing GNOME
front-end.

Please see https://wiki.kubuntu.org/GutsyGibbon/RC/Kubuntu for details.

Gobuntu highlights
------------------

Gobuntu 7.10 is the debut full release of the Ubuntu version that is
composed entirely of open source non-restricted software. For experienced
Linux enthusiasts, Gobuntu will act as the test bed for developing a
user-friendly operating system with no compromise in terms of the open
source philosophy.

This initial release comes without any software from the restricted
component, and with artwork for usplash and the isolinux CD bootloader.

    <title>Ubuntu 7.04 Beta released</title>
    <link>http://comments.gmane.org/gmane.linux.ubuntu.announce/99</link>
    <description>
The Ubuntu team is proud to announce the beta release of Ubuntu 7.04.

Ubuntu 7.04 is the most user-friendly Ubuntu to date and includes a
ground-breaking Windows migration assistant, excellent wireless
networking support and improved multimedia support.

Ubuntu 7.04 server edition adds support for hardware facilities that
speed up the use of virtual machines as well as other improved
hardware support, making it an excellent choice as a web, database,
file and print server, the fastest growing area of Linux server use.

Desktop highlights
------------------

Windows migration tool: The new migration tool recognises Internet
Explorer bookmarks, Firefox favourites, desktop wallpaper, AOL IM
contacts, and Yahoo IM contacts, and imports them into Ubuntu during
installation. This offers easier and faster migration for new users of
Ubuntu and individuals wanting to run a dual-boot system.

Easy-to-install codec wizards: A new guided wizard for installing
codecs not shipped with Ubuntu gives users a safe way of installing
codecs they can legally use to view multimedia content.

Plug and play network sharing with Avahi: This new feature allows
users to automatically discover and join a wireless network and share
music, find printers and more.

Server highlights
-----------------

Virtualisation support: On x86 systems with the Intel VT or AMD-V
extensions, Kernel-based Virtual Machine support (KVM) allows users to
run multiple virtual machines running unmodified Linux. Each virtual
machine has private virtualised hardware: a network card, disk,
graphics adapter, and so on. We have also added VMI support, which
provides optimised performance under VMWare.

Edubuntu highlights
-------------------

Thin client: Edubuntu integrates the latest thin client technology out
of the box. Edubuntu Classroom Server consists of two CDs, a server
image and a server add-on image with additional education applications
and languages.

Improved documentation: The Edubuntu handbook with tips and best practices for educators and educational IT administrators is included.

Thin Client highlights
----------------------

Print and sound support: Jetpipe, a new printing architecture for thin
clients, greatly improves on previous technologies. Sound support in
applications is also dramatically improved with the PulseAudio sound
server.

Thin client management: Administrators can now manage thin client
connections to a server more easily.

Other
-----

* On the Desktop: GNOME 2.18, OpenOffice.org 2.2.0rc3, X.org 7.2

* On the Server: Apache 2.2, PostgreSQL 8.2, PHP 5.2.1, LTSP 5.0

* "Under the hood": GCC 4.1.2, glibc 2.5, Linux 2.6.20, Python 2.5

Known Bugs
----------

  * Resizing ext2/ext3 file systems may fail unless a full file system
check has just been run. To work around this, run 'e2fsck -f
DEVICE' (where DEVICE is the name of the device in question, such
as /dev/sda1) and retry the resize operation after that
completes. When using the desktop CD, you can run this from a
terminal window; when using the alternate install CD, you can
press Alt-F2 to get to a terminal, and Alt-F1 to return to the
    installer. https://launchpad.net/bugs/94647

  * Systems with JMicron IDE(PATA) chipsets may experience a crash on
boot. This was not fixed in time for beta release, but a planned
kernel upload just after release will rectify the problem. A work
around has not been tested, but would involve blacklisting the
    `generic` kernel module. https://launchpad.net/bugs/84964

    <title>Ubuntu 5.10 reaches end-of-life on April 13th 2007</title>
    <link>http://comments.gmane.org/gmane.linux.ubuntu.announce/98</link>
    <description>
Ubuntu announced the release of 5.10 almost 18 months ago, on October
13th. As with the earlier releases, Ubuntu committed to ongoing
security and critical fixes for a period of 18 months. The support
period is now nearing its end and Ubuntu 5.10 will reach end of life
on Friday April 13th 2007. At that time, Ubuntu Security Notices will
no longer include information or updated packages for Ubuntu 5.10.

The supported upgrade path from Ubuntu 5.10 is via Ubuntu 6.06
LTS. Instructions and caveats for the upgrade may be found at
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/DapperUpgrades. Note that upgrades
to version 6.10 and beyond are only supported in multiple steps, via
an upgrade first to 6.06 LTS, then to 6.10. Both Ubuntu 6.06 LTS and
Ubuntu 6.10 continue to be actively supported with security updates
and select high-impact bug fixes. All announcements of official
security updates for Ubuntu releases are sent to the
ubuntu-security-announce mailing list, information about which may be
found at
https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-security-announce.

The
Desktop Edition can be deployed as a general-purpose workstation, thin
client, or engineering workstation. The Server Edition provides a well
integrated platform and simplifies the deployment process of new
servers with any of the standard Internet services such as e-mail,
web, file serving and database management.

    <title>Technical Board decisions</title>
    <link>http://comments.gmane.org/gmane.linux.ubuntu.announce/97</link>
<description>The Ubuntu Technical Board has made two technical decisions of which we
would like to inform the Ubuntu community. Both of these decisions concern
the upcoming 7.04 release of Ubuntu, scheduled for mid-April.

Proprietary Drivers
-------------------

Summary:

Ubuntu 7.04 will preserve the status quo with respect to proprietary video
drivers. As in previous releases, these drivers will be provided for the
convenience of users who choose to use them, but they will not be
  activated by default.

Full decision:

There has been a great deal of discussion within the Ubuntu community
regarding a technical proposal (the enabling of Composite support by
default) which would necessitate the use of certain closed-source video
drivers in a default installation of Ubuntu. In response to this
controversy, a meeting was convened among representatives of the Technical
Board and Community Council to evaluate the issues. The following
conclusions were reached by this group:

   * The desktop effects technology involved in this proposal is important in
enabling a richer, more immersive desktop experience, and as such, is
relevant to the mission of the Ubuntu project.

   * There is a clear need for wider testing of open source software under
development in this area, including both desktop tools and video drivers.

   * The exception granted to the Ubuntu Licence Policy at the project's
inception, which allows the use of closed-source components where
necessary to provide sufficient hardware support, remains valid and
pragmatic. For example, this exception has been applied in the past with
regard to wireless network drivers. We consider making full use of video
hardware to be an important component of that hardware support.

   * However, some of the relevant software necessary to implement this
proposal is not yet considered mature enough to deploy in the default
     Ubuntu configuration.

  Therefore:

   * The proposal will be modified such that the default configuration of
Ubuntu remains the same with regard to the selection of video drivers.

   * However, new infrastructure will be implemented which allows the user to
trivially enable both enhanced desktop effects and the necessary driver
     support.

   * The Ubuntu project reaffirms that it will not include closed-source
components in its default configuration except where allowed by the
existing exception for the provision of sufficient hardware support.

   * Decisions on what hardware support is sufficient for these purposes will
be made on a case-by-case basis by the Technical Board and the Community
     Council.

   * Ubuntu will monitor and support the progress of the free Nouveau driver,
which offers the prospect of supporting enhanced desktop effects for
users of NVIDIA hardware without the need for closed-source drivers.

   * When the factors involved in this decision change, further consideration
will be given to the possibility of changing the default configuration.

The PowerPC Architecture
------------------------

Summary:

Beginning with Ubuntu 7.04, the PowerPC edition of Ubuntu will be
reclassified as unofficial. The PowerPC software itself and supporting
infrastructure will continue to be available, and supported by a community
  team.

Full decision:

The Ubuntu Technical Board has decided to reclassify PowerPC as an
unofficial architecture, rather than a fully supported architecture, for
Ubuntu 7.04 and subsequent releases. This means that packages and ISO
images will continue to be produced, but releases will not be delayed due
to problems which are specific to PowerPC, and the quality of the PowerPC
release itself will depend very much on the extent to which members of the
Ubuntu community drive PowerPC testing and bug fixes.

The rationale for this decision has been recorded in the PowerPC Review
document at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PowerPCReview, which was derived from
a discussion at our developer summit in November. The conversation has
continued, and for some time we have pursued a number of sources for
funding to continue the official testing and support for the architecture.
Unfortunately those resources have not been obtained, and we can not make
the necessary commitments to continue official support for this
  architecture.

A team of PowerPC users and developers has been formed at
https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-powerpc and will be the focus of efforts to
keep Ubuntu's PowerPC support at high quality. We welcome wider
participation in that team, and if developers devote some additional time
to the work then there is no reason that Ubuntu on PowerPC should not
continue to deliver high quality releases.

It is possible that PowerPC will once again become a fully supported
architecture in the future, if the resources needed to guarantee its
quality are found. The architecture is certainly gaining large numbers of
users in embedded and console devices, and there are many reasons to
continue to work with the platform. These uses are outside of the core
Ubuntu mandate, however, so resources cannot be diverted from our server
and desktop efforts just to address their needs.

Existing Ubuntu PowerPC releases will continue to be maintained for the
duration of their supported life cycles, including Ubuntu 6.06 LTS which
will be supported on PowerPC servers until 2011.

    <title>Announcing Xubuntu 6.10</title>
    <link>http://comments.gmane.org/gmane.linux.ubuntu.announce/95</link>
<description>The Xubuntu community is happy to announce the release of Xubuntu 6.10,
codenamed "Edgy Eft". This release includes both installable Desktop CDs
and alternate text-mode installation CDs for several architectures.

Xubuntu is a Linux distribution for your desktop or server, with a fast
and easy install, regular releases, a tight selection of excellent
packages installed by default, every other package you can imagine
available with a few clicks.

Upgrading from Xubuntu 6.06
--------------------------------------------

NOTE: There is a recently discovered bug which makes upgrading via the
graphical update-manager crash and leave the upgrade process in a state
that can only be recovered from by dropping to the command line.

Therefore, it is recommended that instead of upgrade-manager, the
command line upgrade method is used by invoking apt-get dist-upgrade.

Neither a clean install from the CD nor the other Ubuntu variants are
affected by this bug.
