    <title>A nikud adding program</title>
    <link>http://comments.gmane.org/gmane.linux.region.israel.ivrix.discuss/1282</link>
    <description>Shalom everyone,

I have recently written a small gtk-perl program that allows adding nikud to
Hebrew text as follows:

0. A script is run that prepares a hebrew haser to nikud db by parsing all
text with nikud from the machon-mamre web site. This step creates a text
file containing the hebrew haser word as a key and a list of all nikud
combinations as a value. (A piece of trivia is that the word in the Tenach
with the most different ways of nikud is Dalet, Bet, Reish that has 22
different spellings).

1. The text is typed or copied into the program without nikud.

2. The nikud tool is activated this selects the first word of the text.

3. A set of buttons are created with all the different spellings of the
word. Pressing the button chooses that spelling and replaces the original
word.

That's it. My question is if there already exists a similar free program, or
if there is any interest should clean it up and release it? I realize that
there are additional improvements that may be made that will use grammatical
rules to split prefixes from the indexed word, or e.g. use of hspell. It
would also be possible to create a freedb like internet site where all users
of the program can upload their indices...

Regards,
Dov

    <title>Uninteresting patches for hspell-1.0</title>
    <link>http://comments.gmane.org/gmane.linux.region.israel.ivrix.discuss/1268</link>
    <description>Dear List,
as a long-term hater of building in source directories,
I've patched the hspell Makefile.in (and a few other bits and pieces)
to allow building in a separate directory, in the Autotools way.

If there's a source repository against which I could check for recent
changes, I've missed it. I'm therefore patching against the 1.0 release.

I introduce two new dependencies:
(a) I use VPATH. Really, separate building is ugly as sin without it.
Merely defining it is harmless enough, of course, the point is that
the 'make' utility must respond to it - that, or just build in the
     source directory (ugh) as before.
(b) A redundant small change, but I prefer it:
I use 'install' to put everything where I want it. This allows me
to collapse the cp / chmod sequences into single safe calls.
If you prefer to avoid this extra dependency, go back to cp and chmod,
but don't get rid of the extra $(SRCDIR)/ mini-paths I've added!

A separate patch cleans up a handful of miscellaneous warnings.
Tcl_DeleteHashTable() was recklessly called without a prototype,
and in fact was being mis-called, with an unused extra argument.

The patches are bzipped to avoid damage in transit. The patches
themselves use UN*X-style LF line-breaks. Extra copies of the
bzipped patches should be available for the foreseeable future in
http://www.brenda-arkle.demon.co.uk/patches/hspell/

Happy patching...

The greatest things: right-to-left running over page breaks without
disturbing the header, and even... running over page breaks in two

text in two languages (left-to-right and right-to-left) you can really do
whatever you want. Regards.

    <title>Hebrew in tetex pdflatex</title>
    <link>http://comments.gmane.org/gmane.linux.region.israel.ivrix.discuss/1255</link>
    <description>Hi,

I hope you don't mind the following newbie question. The wealth of
options and documentation for Hebrew-in-LaTeX, much of which seems
outdated, got me rather confused; so I'd appreciate advice on the
current best practice.

I have a long LaTeX document which compiles nicely via pdflatex
(Fedora Core 6 tetex-3.0-32.fc6 package), using
\documentclass{book} \usepackage[english]{babel} .

I want to add a few pages in Hebrew.

What's the simplest way to do so, with minimal disruption of the
document's existing content, build process and output quality?

Most of this Hebrew text is in plain modern Hebrew. There's one short
biblical quote with fancy diacritics, but I don't mind include that part
as an external figure if this makes things simpler.

Thanks,
  Eran

<title>Hats on YUD, VAV, and NUN sufit in DejaVU</title>
    <link>http://comments.gmane.org/gmane.linux.region.israel.ivrix.discuss/1236</link>
    <description>Hello all,

This is probably not the right forum, but I thought that I would raise
it here anyhow in lack of a better place.

As you might have seen DejaVu Sans now includes Hebrew glyphs. These
look great in my system (especially since I was never able to
configure fontconfig for Hebrew to my liking), but there are a couple
of problem/questions:

The main problem, imo, is that the YUD does not have a roof in the
font, but the VAV and the NUN-SUFIT do. In my opinion this is
inconsistent, and I filed a bug report to that extent:

    https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=8145

I got no response to that bug report and I am considering getting cvs
access and just do the change myself. But I would like to hear some
others opinions on the matter before I do.

There are some other problems with nikud that are too close to the
base characters, but these can wait.

Looking forward to hearing some more opinions on the matter,
Dov

It is freely available under the GPL, on

You can read more about this project in

myself, I cannot judge whether this list is good enough. In case it is, I'll be
happy to push it into various spellers (including Google's Gmail), as we already
did for Hebrew.

<description>IvriTeX is a package that provides Hebrew support for LaTeX.

Version 1.2.1 is now availble. See
http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=33341
For more information, see http://ivritex.sourceforge.net/

This change mainly adds support for the Culmus fonts and decent 8bit
encoding.
