end of Fedora Legacy mirror at Iowa State

Max Spevack announced last month that Fedora Core 5's end of life would be
June 29th. That gives us a good milestone for removing our Fedora Legacy
mirror. Traffic was high for two months after the announcement of Fedora
Legacy's demise but has dwindled since April. So, beginning July 1, 2007, Iowa
State will no longer offer a mirror of Fedora Legacy. Grab what you would like
between now and then.

Would whoever is responsible for http://download.fedoralegacy.org/download/f
edoralegacy-mirrors.php please remove us from that page at your leisure?

Many thanks to everyone who worked on that project!

New proposed top level FAQ for the defunct FedoraLegacy project

After the IRC conversations I had today with "F13", here is a proposed
FAQ for the top level http://fedoralegacy.org/ site.

--David

Fedora Core Legacy Shutdown FAQ:
02/08/07

--------------------------------

Q. Why is the FedoraLegacy project shutting down?

A. A combination of reasons:
    - A lack of community members that actually contributed to patches,
testing, deployment, etc.
    - A lack of funding
    - A decreasing amount of interest

--

Q. I just heard that FedoraLegacy is closing down. Why didn't you give
any head notice?

A. This was heavily discussed on the "fedora-legacy-list" list. It's
always been recommended that Legacy users
be subscribed to this list to stay informed.

--

Q. Will FedoraLegacy take on support for FC6?

A. No, the entire Legacy project is over. Upgrade to a newer version of
FedoraCore if you want security and feature
patches or upgrade to a different distro such as Redhat Enterprise
Linux, Centos, or a different distro all
   together.

--

Q. My FedoraLegacy servers are now complaining about "No mirrors"
available. Why?

A. The master repository was deemed stale for <=FC4 patches as of
December 12, 2006. On February 7th, 2007, the
master repository was completely shut down due to financial reasons.
Other Legacy repository mirrors
should be still up but their content is now stale.

--

Q. Will I be able to continue downloading the Legacy RPMs for my older
distributions?

A. Legacy repository mirrors should be up for some period to come but
they will probably start individually removing
that content as it's now stale. Download it now while you still
can. You can find a list of mirrors here:

      http://fedoralegacy.org/download/fedoralegacy-mirrors.php

--

Q. So what do I do now? I need a Redhat-style distribution that lasts
longer than Redhat's official 12-18 month
   lifespan.

A. Use the official Redhat Enterprise Linux or Centos.

--

Q. How long will the FedoraLegacy website stay up?

A. ???

--

================

Issues :

    1. the toplevel fedoralegacy.org site says things are being
"Re-evaluated". This should be updated
to say something like "The Fedora Legacy project has ended. The
master legacy download repository has shut down
and no new RPMs will be to any mirrors."

    2. For the FAQ entry above, how long will the website stay up? When
the site does go down, can we post this FAQ
to a newgroup or something like that so it will be sucked into
the search engines of the world so people can
       find it?

    3. Maybe it would be best to strip out all content off the site and
only have the shutdown documentation posted.

We're planning to keep them up for at least six months to a year so
long as we are getting significant downloads from people. If the numbers
start to drop, we'll probably take it down sooner than that.

   Current stats:

      RPMS downloaded in November: 5987

      RPMS downloaded in December: 10620

      RPMS downloaded in January: 3006

RPMs downloaded since Feb 1: 19799

So, at least some people still find us useful. :+D

We don't think, from a security point of view, that it is responsible
to encourage people to use older systems by leaving them up longer than
a year. But that gives people time to find a suitable migration path.

this year. I did some searching on this list and found an update for 7.3

I understand that no one is making updates for 7.2 anymore, so I was
wondering if I can adapt the one for 7.3. The timezone rules are part of
the glibc packages. Do I really need the new version of glibc, or can I
simply copy the /usr/share/zoneinfo files from the updated 7.3 packages
onto 7.2? In other words, do the new zoneinfo files require the new glibc
to work properly?

Now that the Legacy project is shutting down, the biggest problem
becomes the security updates. I have an FC4 server that I plan to keep
running until CentOS 5 comes out, but I also have to apply security
patches to this machine meanwhile.

What would be the best source of security updates for FC4 short-term?

SRPMs from FC5 or FC6, recompiled? But then there might be some
dependency issues that might get ugly.

SRPMs from RHEL or CentOS? Which version would be closest to FC4? Again,
I expect some dependency issues here.

Of course, one can always download the upstream tarballs and generate
packages, but somehow I suspect this to be the most difficult method.

Any other suggestions?

In case any of you are not aware, the Fedora Legacy project is in the
process of shutting down.

The current model for supporting maintenance distributions is being
re-examined. In the meantime, we are unable to extend support to older
Fedora Core releases as we had planned. As of now, Fedora Core 4 and
earlier distributions are no longer being maintained.

Discussions last night on the #Fedora-Legacy channel have brought to
light the fact that certain Fedora Legacy properties (servers) may be
going away soon, such as the repository at
<http://download.fedoralegacy.org/> and the build server. Legacy folks
need to let us know what they want to be done with the content in the
repository mirrors. If you don't speak up, we may find ourselves in a
place where 'yum update' commands will fail in the near future for the
Red Hat and Fedora Core releases that Legacy has supported in the past.

If there are any issues you need to discuss regarding these events, you
are welcome to discuss them on our IRC channel (channel #Fedora-Legacy
on the freenode IRC network <http://freenode.net/>), or on the Fedora
Legacy discussion list:
     <https://www.redhat.com/mailman/listinfo/fedora-legacy-list>

Sincerely,
   Jesse Keating

   David Eisenstein
of the Legacy Team.

Hi All,

Am needing to setup a FC4 box with an older 2.6.16 kernel. However, these
have been deleted/archived from the usual fedora repo and mirrors (although
old FC5 kernels are still available).

Is there anywhere I can access these older kernels??? I've been having a
good old search on the web, but so far, to no avail.
