Random notes on WebOS's Enyo

There's been recent discussions about running HTML5 "apps" in Sugar
and/or the OLPC OS, just like WebOS does. A bit earlier today on
irc...

(slightly edited for clarity)

[12:21:29] <cscott> cjb: hp's webos team has apparently been hired en
bloc by google
[12:21:45] <cscott> http://www.theverge.com/2012/5/24/3042441/hp-enyo-google
[12:22:11] <cscott> "what this means for the future of webos is unclear"
[12:30:53] <cscott> hp clarified -- it's not the *entire* webos team,
just the engineers "responsible for 99% of the code"
[12:45:04] <martin_xsa> ah, it's not any random part of webos, it's
the part I like :-)
[12:45:13] <martin_xsa> now I know the name - Enyo
[12:52:50] <cscott> yeah, enyo looks like it was actually getting
somewhere with its version 2.0
[12:53:08] <cscott> there are iphone and android apps in the app
stores using enyo already

If anyone is playing around looking for a runtime / sandbox
environment, Enyo and ChromeOS's shell are probably top of the list...

cheers,

Sugar Digest 2012-05-24

== Sugar Digest ==

1. Sugar 0.96 has been officially released. You can read all about it at [1].

2. Guzmán Trinidad has posted some great videos of various physics
investigations on the XO (See [2]).

3. EduJAM! presented awards for the best Sugar activities [3].
Although they were not singled out in any special way, the youth of
Uruguay managed to walk away with six of the prizes. Congratulations
to Christofer, Agustin, Daniel, et al. for your contributions. A tip
of the hat to the adult contributors too: Flavio, Gabriel, Alan,
Andres, and Alejandro.

By my rough estimate, approximately 10% of all Sugar activities have
been written by kids who grew up on Sugar. It would interesting to
understand the phenomenon. But we must be doing something right.

I did learn that Christofer has been in an on-going dialog with
Rosamel Ramirez, a teacher in Duranzo about his activity development.
Their latest collaboration is JAMuliples [4]. Good stuff.

4. Some of you may be following the discussion about "New Co." on the
iaep list [5] and [6]. To summarize, we are exploring alternative
structures for Sugar Labs, which may well involve the creation of a
new organization -- to augment our FOSS development efforts housed at
the SFC -- to support the auxillary operations involved with
supporting the code in the field.

I solicited feedback on the specific goals for a New Co. Aleksey Lim
reminded us that our stated mission as a community is much broader
than just software development [7]: we want our software to be used
and we want to have a positive influence of other people writing
learning software. We came together as a community because we share
certain principles about learning and we want to help people to
"embody these principals 'in the field'."

In trying to answer my specific question, Aleksey said: the "new
organization should provide practices and procedures how to setup
local deployment program in most useful way." and the "new
organization should provide a way to forward funding... to particular
program[s] and provide everything to make this funding open/clear for
donators and easy handled by local deployment people." Finally, he
posited that perhaps the "new organization will be a guarantee for
institutions where local deployment happens (schools, etc.) to make
them assured that even after finishing the program, there will be a
way to get some help."

Martin Langhoff raised some important points as well: "The _top
priority_ should be to get stuff done with your own means...", that
"the good name of SL is a precious asset based on work from a global
effort", but we should "let each group do their own thing. It's their
name, their reputation on the line."

We'll be continuing the discuss at next week's Sugar Labs oversight
board (SLOB) meeting. Please join us.

5. On a personal note, my heart goes out to Marco Presenti Gritti, who
posted on his blog [8] this week that he has cancer. For those of you
who do not know him, Marco was part of the team that created Sugar and
was at my side when we created Sugar Labs. Marco: know that there are
many people thinking of you.

I'm testing in my XO 1.0 the build 12.1 (Sugar 0.96.1)

Why?
It's a new mechanism for Fedora 17?

I have been testing the RC4 f17 release of SoaS [1] and I see a problem

If jabber.sugarlabs.org is connected via a wireless AP, or wired

DBusError: Process /usr/bin/sugar-presence-service exited with status 1

Etoys runs fine if wireless is not logged in and/or wired network is not
connected. (no jabber connected)

As Etoys is a favorite on the f3 ring and f17 release is imminent, I
feel that this is an important bug to look at.

[PATCH Write] Optional data when it exports a file SL#2795

'keep' and 'share-scope' are optional metadata for the activity metadata, so we
should use them only if they are set before and if not we should use default
values for them. This patch fixes it.

For example, when the user downloads a file from Internet only 'keep' is set to
'0' but not 'share-scope'. A similar situation happens when a file is openen
with write from a pen-drive: neither 'keep' nor 'share-scope' are set for the
activity.

ran into. New users can offer a fresh perspective on things that we give
for granted.

Subject: primo bug report
Date: Wed, 23 May 2012 15:24:02 -0400

My older kid (7yr) and I had a lot of fun last with the OLPC. We
played maze, we took pictures and more.
The younger kid (15mo) seemed confused by the lack of a touch screen :-)

- I can't find a way to connect to a network with hidden SSID. I tried
to add my network using Gnome, but I couldn't find a "Connect" button
there. Back to Sugar, the hidden network is still hidden.

- The audio/video system seems unreliable. "Record" takes a long time
to start. When I try to record (audio or video) the success rate is
around 30% - the activity gets stuck. I can leave the activity but it
keeps running in the background (green leds for camera and mike still
on). How can I kill the activity entirely?

- I found a recording in the Journal, but the Play activity failed
with something as "resource busy".

- While playing maze, with some gesture I changed the borders from the
activity-specific border/menus to a different view. The only way out
was the "square" button on top right. What's the gesture in and out of
the activity-specific border/menus?

- Only maze and collapse seem to work in game mode (rotated screen,
use of the joypad). The other activities all requires a mouse. That's
too bad.

- Is there a way to upload an Epub and use the computer as an
e-reader? Is there a mode where the backlight is off (I heard rumors
like that)?

- Reliability seems an issue. For a reason or another, I ended up
rebooting every few minutes when I was switching among apps. When I
stuck to play maze, everything was smooth and my kid did a million
runs through the labyrinth. Just out of curiosity, did you install a
beta build, or is it supposed to be stable? I don't mind "dogfooding",
but I would be worried if this is the build going out to the public.

- Is there a way to wipe it and restore to factory? You mentioned
something like that.

Thanks for raising this Manuel

Though I am almost monolingual in English, I still support the idea of list posts being in the language that the writer is most confident. Some may not have the confidence to write in a list's main language or to check that the Google Translate makes sense. Their contribution still is very important.

I googled it and found:
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Mailing_list_guidelines#Use_the_common_language
http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/editplus/message/5510

The first supports the main language, the discussion in the second supports both a main language and foreign language.

I would encourage those posting in a foreign language to include a Google Translate in the main language. I am not sure though, which should come first.

Tony

Google Translation

http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Mailing_list_guidelines # Use_the_common_language
http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/editplus/message/5510
