Update for Debian 6.0: 6.0.5 released
-------------------------------------

The fifth update for Debian 6.0 (codenamed "Squeeze") [1] has been
released. This update mainly adds corrections of security problems to
the stable release, along with some adjustments for serious problems.

Deadlines reminder for DebConf12
--------------------------------

Leandro Gómez noted that the deadline for sponsored registration for
DebConf12 is quickly approaching [2]; hurry up and register [3] before
Tuesday 15 May!

   2 : http://leogg.wordpress.com/2012/05/08/are-you-going-to-debconf12/
   3 : http://debconf12.debconf.org/register.xhtml

In related news, Gunnar Wolf sent another call for papers [4] for
DebConf12: talk submissions will be accepted until a day before the
talk itself, but they must be submitted before Friday 1 June to have
guaranteed video coverage and to be announced as part of the
conference's official program.

   4 : http://blog.debconf.org/blog/debconf12/gw_dc12_your_greatest_ideas.dc

Holger Levsen also reported on his recent visit to Managua,
Nicaragua [5]. The report includes a thematically sorted list of
impressions and advice you may be really interested in reading if you
are considering coming to DebConf12. In short, "it was great, DebConf12
will be great."

General Resolution about diversity statement
--------------------------------------------

The Debian Project Secretary, Kurt Roeckx, announced that the process
for a General Resolution about the Debian Project's diversity
statement [6] has been started. Details are available on the related
vote page [7] while the discussion can be followed on the debian-vote
mailing list [8].

   8 : https://lists.debian.org/debian-vote/2012/05/msg00011.html

First alpha release of the installer for Debian Wheezy
------------------------------------------------------

The new Debian Installer [9] supports WPA, uses ext4 as default
filesystem, allows Btrfs for the /boot partition, allows a choice of
the ISO image to use, and a lot more. It also improves the handling of
ZFS file systems, and supports a lot of new hardware. You are welcome
to help finding bugs and further improving the installer by trying it
out. Installer CDs, other media and everything else [10] you will need
are available.

"The Debian Administrator's Handbook" freed!
---------------------------------------------

Raphaël Hertzog announced the availability of "The Debian
Administrator's Handbook" [11]. This manual is the English translation
of the French best-seller "Cahier de l'Admin", of which he is co-author
with Roland Mas. The book is now released under a DFSG [12] compliant
license and it has also been packaged for the main Debian repository,
so you can install it on Debian unstable with:
apt-get install debian-handbook

An ever growing mirrors network
-------------------------------

Raphael Geissert wrote a blog post about the constant growth of
Debian's mirrors network [13]. The total number of mirrors is currently
330 for the HTTP protocol and 300 for FTP. The mirrors are distributed
across 73 countries, thanks to the Debian sponsors hosting them.

Bits from the DPL
-----------------

Stefano Zacchiroli sent his monthly report [14] on DPL activities.
During April, Stefano mostly spent time trying to reach consensus on
various topics: the proposal for a diversity statement for the Debian
Project [15], the revenue sharing agreement [16] with DuckDuckGo, the
long running conflict over Python maintenance [17] and the relationship
between pkg-multimedia maintainers team and the unofficial
debian-multimedia.org repository [18]. In his mail, Stefano also asked
for "DPL helpers": volunteers to help the Debian Project Leader in
some minor tasks and share his work-load.

Deploy your own "cloud" with Debian "Wheezy"
--------------------------------------------

The Debian Project has announced the availability, for its testing
distribution, of some packages to create a private cloud [1]: among others,
xcp-xapi [2] and nova-xcp-plugins [3].
"Preserving user freedoms in the cloud is a tricky business and one of the
major challenges ahead for Free Software. By easing the deployment of
Debian-based private clouds we want to help our users in resisting the lure of
giving up their freedoms in exchange of some flexibility," said Stefano
Zacchiroli, Debian Project Leader.

Debian Tour in Nicaragua
------------------------

The Debian Nicaraguan community is organising the Debian Tour [4]: from April
to June, members of the local Debian community will deliver talks in several
universities in Nicaragua, helping students to learn about the Debian Project
and Free Software in general. The tour started in the city of Masaya, and will
touch other cities such as Managua and León. On May 5th, Debian Tour will take
place at UCA (the future DebConf12 venue) and special visitors, the Debian
Developers and DebConf chairs, Gunnar Wolf and Holger Levsen, will attend this
time.

Debian at ESRF
--------------

Jérôme Kieffer noticed that the European Synchrotron in Grenoble [5] is
migrating its computing infrastructure to Debian: the computer controlling the
particle accelerator has already been migrated, as well as some data analysis
servers and part of the computer cluster. The European Synchrotron Radiation
Facility [6] ("ESRF") is a joint facility supported and shared by various
European countries which operates the most powerful synchrotron radiation
source in Europe. "For data analysis Debian offers both the richest environment
including the most used software and libraries in our field of research, and a
rock solid distribution with security fixes," added Jérôme in another mail
[7].

Bits from the DPL
-----------------

Stefano Zacchiroli sent his monthly report on DPL activities [8]. During the
last month, Stefano informed the project about a proposal for a revenue sharing
agreement from DuckDuckGo [9], marked DEP-5 [10] as accepted, and worked with
Kenshi Muto to transfer the ownership of the Debian trademark in Japan to SPI.
Stefano also gave an interview about Debian and Free Software in general [11]
(in Italian) to one of the major newspapers in Italy, La Repubblica. Thanks to
Matteo Cortese, who translated it, an English version [12] of the interview is
also available.

Other news
----------

Vincent Bernat wrote a tutorial on how to install XBMC on Debian [14] "Wheezy".
XBMC [15] is a media centre supporting a wide range of digital media and
remote controls, which — thanks to the hard work of Andres Mejia — has
recently been accepted into Debian [16].

Loïc Dachary sent a report from the OpenStack summit [17] where he represented
the Debian Project.

   17 : http://lists.alioth.debian.org/pipermail/openstack-devel/2012-April/000748.html

Ben Hutchings, member of the Debian Kernel Team, announced that he will
maintain the Linux kernel version 3.2 as long-term kernel at kernel.org, in

Deploy your own "cloud" with Debian "Wheezy" press< at >debian.org

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Deploy your own "cloud" with Debian "Wheezy"

The Debian Project produces an entirely Free operating system that
empowers its users to be in control of the software running their
computers. These days, more and more computing is being moved away from
user computers to the so-called "cloud" – a vague term often used to
refer to Software as a Service (SaaS) [1] offerings. We are concerned
that, without the needed care, this trend might put in jeopardy most of
the freedoms that users enjoy when running (on their computers)
software that is Free according to the Debian Free Software
Guidelines [2].

  1: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Software_as_a_service
  2: http://www.debian.org/social_contract#guidelines

We encourage Debian users to prefer cloud offerings where the SaaS
infrastructure is entirely made of Free Software and can be run under
their control. We encourage Debian users to deploy their own clouds, as
the ultimate way to retain all the freedoms that Debian stands for.

To help our users with these tasks, we are proud to announce the
availability of several new technologies that would ease the deployment
of Debian-based clouds. Starting with the forthcoming release of Debian
7.0 "Wheezy", users will find ready-to-use packages for OpenStack® and
Xen Cloud Platform (XCP). OpenStack®, the open source cloud OS, has
been created to drive industry standards and end cloud lock-in.
OpenStack® is a common, open platform for both public and private
clouds with the support of more than 2,600 global project participant
and over 150 industry leading companies. The open source cloud
operating system enables businesses to manage computers, storage, and
networking resources via a self-service portal and APIs on standard
hardware at massive scale. To find out more about OpenStack®, you can
visit the official website [3].

  3: http://www.openstack.org/

The Xen Cloud Platform (XCP) is a Free Software project that is hosted
by xen.org [4] that delivers an enterprise-ready server virtualization
and cloud computing platform. XCP integrates with the following cloud
orchestration stacks: CloudStack, OpenNebula and OpenStack®. To find
out more about XCP, you can visit the website of the project.

  4: http://www.xen.org/products/cloudxen.html

The work to finalize Debian 7.0 "Wheezy" is still ongoing, but
packages of the above technologies are already available as part of our
"testing" release [5]. We encourage interested users to test them. In
particular:

  * You can set up a minimal but fully functional OpenStack® cluster
using two computers by following the HOWTO on the Debian wiki [6]

  * You can test XCP installation and deployment by installing
the xcp-xapi [7] package and following the instructions in its
    README.Debian file

  * You can test OpenStack® using XCP by installing nova-xcp-plugins
[8] in your XCP server, and following the instructions in its
    README.xcp_and_OpenStack file

"Preserving user freedoms in the cloud is a tricky business and one of
the major challenges ahead for Free Software. By easing the deployment
of Debian-based private clouds we want to help our users in resisting
the lure of giving up their freedoms in exchange of some flexibility,"
said Stefano Zacchiroli, Debian Project Leader.
For Lars Kurth, Community Manager at Xen.org, "Debian and Xen have a
long uninterrupted history: thus, I am really pleased that Debian is
the first Linux distribution to contain XCP packages. Until now, it
was only possible to use XCP in Linux appliances within a tightly
controlled environment. In Debian "Wheezy" we changed how users
interact with XCP, providing much more flexibility and enabling anybody
to use Debian as a XCP Dom0 kernel. This enables Debian users to build
cloud services based on the leading Free Software virtualization
platform that is powering some of the largest clouds in production
today."
"Having OpenStack packages included in Debian confirms the great job
done by the OpenStack community to deliver high-quality free/libre
software. It's exciting to collaborate with the Debian developers to
enable building clouds based entirely on Free Software," added Stefano
Maffulli, OpenStack® Technical Community Manager.

Please let us know if you encounter any problem, using the Debian
bug tracking system [9].

About Debian
------------

The Debian Project was founded in 1993 by Ian Murdock to be a truly
free community project. Since then the project has grown to be one of
the largest and most influential open source projects. Thousands of
volunteers from all over the world work together to create and maintain
Debian software. Available in 70 languages, and supporting a huge range
of computer types, Debian calls itself the "universal operating system".

Debian project leader elected
-----------------------------

The Debian project has just reelected Stefano Zacchiroli for a third year as
Debian Project Leader [1]. More than 80% of voters put him as their first
choice (or equal first) on their ballot papers.

   1 : http://www.debian.org/News/2012/20120415

Stefano's large majority over his opponents shows how satisfied the Debian
project is with his work so far, and its wish for him to represent the project
during one last term — Stefano has already announced he won't be seeking
reelection again next year. Wouter Verhelst and Gergely Nagy also gained a lot
of support from Debian project members, both coming hundreds of votes ahead of
the "None of the above" ballot choice.

Registration open for DebConf12
-------------------------------

The Debian project is pleased to announce that registration is now open for the
DebConf12 [2] conference, which will take place in Managua, Nicaragua, from
Sunday 8 July to Saturday 14 July 2012. The conference will be preceded as
usual by a week-long DebCamp, from Sunday 1 July to Saturday 7 July. It will
only be possible to apply for food and accommodation grants and/or travel
grants until 15 May.

   2 : http://www.debian.org/News/2012/20120412

Debian also invites submissions of proposals [3] for papers, presentations,
discussion sessions and tutorials for DebConf12 until 1 June 2012.

Personal BSP initiatives
------------------------

We usually give information about BSPs where a group of people meet over a
weekend, but today we'd like to mention two personal initiatives. Gregor
Herrmann has reported every [4] week [5] over [6] ten [7] Release-Critical bugs
squashed. Gerfried Fuchs also regularly reports on stable Release-Critical bugs
squashed, and has managed to squash over [8] thirty [9] bugs [10] each month.
We would like to thank Gregor Herrmann, Gerfried Fuchs and all other RC bug
addicts who are constantly helping to make our distribution better.

The state of Debian s390x
-------------------------

Philipp Kern posted an update on the current state of the Debian s390x port
[11]. Work started on this port last summer, during DebConf11 [12], and in less
than a month it already had almost 65% of packages built. Unfortunately, a new
GLib release created some problems on this architecture; but recently a new
major release of GLib [13] fixed all the issues. The next steps for this port
will be to fix open bugs [14] and to make Iceweasel build successfully.

Guido Günther sent out some bits from the fifth Debian Groupware Meeting [19],
which was held at the Linux Hotel in Essen, Germany. During the weekend the
group fixed various issues and was able to push new versions of icedove [20]
and d-push [21] to "unstable" while iceowl [22] (dead upstream) remains in
"experimental". Some work was also done on OpenChange, Zarafa ZCP and SOGo,
and several evolution bugs [23] were worked on.

GNU/Linux and FreeBSD/PC-BSD 9.0 [24] on a dual AMD Opteron 2384 system with 4
GB of RAM and a 160 GB Western Digital SATA drive. It appears that Linux is
generally faster than kFreeBSD for now, but kFreeBSD won on a few tests. For

Registration open for DebConf12

The Debian Project is pleased to announce that registration is now open
for DebConf12, which will take place in Managua, Nicaragua, from Sunday
8 July to Saturday 14 July 2012. The conference will be preceded as
usual by one week of DebCamp, from Sunday 1 July to Saturday 7 July.

As previous years, three different registration options will be
available: "Sponsored", "Professional" and "Corporate". Through the
"Sponsored" category, the Debian Project intend to help some people
attend who would not be able to pay for their own travel to DebConf.
The "Corporate" category, with a USD 1300 (EUR 1000) registration fee,
is intended for those attending DebConf as representatives of
companies. The "Professional" category, with a USD 650 (EUR 500)
registration fee, is intended for any individual or company who wants
to help the conference by paying the direct costs of their attendence.

It will only be possible to apply for food and accommodation grants
and/or travel grants until 15 May. For more detailed information about
how to register, please see the separate announcement from the DebConf
team [1].

Call for papers
---------------

Debian invites submissions of proposals for papers, presentations,
discussion sessions and tutorials for its DebConf12 conference.
Submissions are not limited to raditional talks: you could propose a
performance, art installation, debate, or anything else. Official
submissions will be accepted until 1 June 2012, 23:59 UTC.

This year, we will continue to organize some talks into thematic
tracks. If you have a proposal for a DebConf track, please contact
debconf-team< at >lists.debconf.org. Previous examples included "Debian
Science", "Debian Infrastructure", and "Community Outreach" tracks.
If you would like to be a track coordinator, please volunteer on that
list. Detailed information on how to submit an event are available on
the mail from the DebConf team [2].

Bits from Debian Med team
-------------------------

Andreas Tille sent some bits from the Debian Med team [1], where he
talked about recent initiatives of the team including the [2] "Debian Med
Bug Squashing Advent Calendar 2011" and the [3] "Mentoring of the Month"
(MoM) project. Andreas also reminded us that in January the Debian Med
project reached 10: in ten years, Debian Med has grown from a one man
project to a "strong team maintaining a set of over 200 highly
specialised packages with a high quality standard", as Andreas said in
arelated blogpost [4]. The Debian Med project not only provides and
maintains specialised packages for biology and medicine, but is — like
other Debian Blends — "a nice entry point for people to join Debian
because newcomers can identify themselves with a known topic (the scope
of the Blend — in this case medicine and bioinformatics) first and learn
Debian rules in a team with common interest", added Andreas in the mail.
This idea was confirmed by the results of asurvey focused on why Debian
Med team members became Debian Developers [5].

Debian joins the OSI
--------------------

The Debian project announced that it is joining the [6] "Open Source Initiative
(OSI)" as an affiliate. The OSI was founded in 1998 with the aim of
explaining, advocating, and protecting the term "open source".
For many years now, the OSI has helped the "Open Source"
trademark gain recognition, particularly in the corporate world.

Report from DSA Team sprint
---------------------------

Luca Filipozzi wrote a report from the Debian System Administrators ([7]
"DSA") team's sprint held over the weekend of 16-18 March in Oslo, Norway. During
the meeting the team discussed a long-term plan for Debian's infrastructure,
reviewing the machines currently administrated, and formulating procedures
regarding account and group management. One of the main points discussed at the
meeting was the necessity to renew the set of machines — which are now old
and long out of warranty — and how to do it. While in the past Debian's
hardware requirements were met by donations of new and used hardware from
individuals and organizations, this is no longer true. The team elaborated a
"Five Year Plan" for a hardware refresh cycle to avoid to having machines more
than five years old. "A clear outcome of our work on the Five Year Plan is an
understanding that hardware has now become one of the biggest expense
categories for Debian", said Luca. Various machines are also needed in order
to support the whole set of architectures for which Debian is shipped. For more
information on how to donate equipment to the Debian Project, please contact
thehardware donations team [8].

The DSA sprint was made possible by donations [9] to Debian and by Varnish
Software who hosted it and provided food and drink. Thank you!

"Fascinating": a Debian based tricorder
---------------------------------------

Peter Jansen, a cognitive science researcher, brought to life Spock's tricorder
[10] from the popular Star Trek television series. Peter, in fact, developed a
handheld device able — thanks to its embedded sensors — to measure various
environmental parameters (link temperature, humidity, magnetic fields, etc.).
The device runs Debian GNU/Linux on an ARM920T-based Atmel microcontroller: the
hardware specifications and schematics, and the software are licensed
respectively under TAPR non-commercial and GPL 3 and are available on the
project website [11].

So long, and thanks for all the news
------------------------------------

The year was 2006. The place: Oaxtepec, Mexico. The event: DebConf6. This is
how the Publicity team was born [12], during a BoF titled "Representing Debian".
And among others there were two Debian contributors (who later became
Debian Developers), Alexander Schmehl and Meike Reichle. If you are a
regular reader of Debian Project News, or a contributor to the Publicity
Team, you'll surely recognize their names: they worked every day for the
last six years to bring us news about the Debian world and to announce
important changes inside the project. Alexander and Meike have now
decided to step down from the Press and Publicity team [13] and start
another, different adventure [14]. The Publicity Team would like to thank
them for their tireless effort, their creativity and their inspiring
work.

So long, and thanks for all the news!

Other news
----------

Stefan Fritsch posted some bits from the Apache Maintainers [19] announcing
some changes — a new set of packaging guidelines, a recent major Apache HTTPD
upgrade, and an upcoming package transition.

   19: http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel-announce/2012/03/msg00013.html

Axel Beckert recently wrote about the (perhaps temporary) disappearance of
aptitude-gtk [20]. The new team is currently focusing on the internal code and
the native ncurses user interface, but anyone who wants to contribute to the
GUI is welcome to join the Aptitude team [21].

Jan Hauke Rahm wrote a report from the Front Desk and DAM sprint [26] that was
recently held in Mönchengladbach, Germany. During the meeting, the members of
both teams worked on the [27] "New Members" web interface, as well as on
long-outstanding cases of NM applicants. The meeting turned out to be a great
chance to discuss face-to-face and in person delicate cases and to work on the
pending requests. Both teams would like to thank Credativ who hosted the
meeting.

Release-Critical bugs statistics for the upcoming release
---------------------------------------------------------

According to the Bugs Search interface of the Ultimate Debian Database [32],
the upcoming release, Debian "Wheezy" , is currently affected by 742
Release-Critical bugs. Ignoring bugs which are easily solved or on the way to
being solved, roughly speaking, about 536 Release-Critical bugs remain to be
solved for the release to happen.

The Debian Project joins the OSI

The Debian Project is pleased to announce that it is joining the Open
Source Initiative ("OSI") [1] as an affiliate. The OSI was founded in
1998 by Eric S. Raymond and Bruce Perens, with the aim of explaining,
advocating, and protecting the term "open source". Debian shares the
OSI's desire to encourage Free Software. Debian's Social Contract
commits it to producing a system which is 100% free [2].

  1: http://opensource.org/
  2: http://www.debian.org/intro/free

The OSI's Open Source Definition [3] is closely based on the Debian
Free Software Guidelines [4], the document that defines the types of
software licenses which the Debian Project accepts. For many years now,
the OSI has helped the "Open Source" trademark gain recognition,
particularly in the corporate world. The OSI recently decided to
pursue this mission by becoming a member-led organisation, and as a
first step has invited Free and Open Source Software projects to
become affiliate members.

  3: http://opensource.org/docs/osd
  4: http://www.debian.org/social_contract#guidelines

By becoming an affiliate of the OSI, the Debian Project recognises the
OSI's history of efforts towards goals shared by both organisations.
However, the Debian Project will not automatically adopt OSI decisions
on the acceptability of particular software licenses and will maintain
an independent license review process.

"For widespread Free Software adoption we still need to overcome many
challenges," said Stefano Zacchiroli, Debian Project Leader. "While
Debian is perfectly suited to face technical challenges, other
organisations are better suited to face more political ones, like
anti-Free Software corporate FUD, or unjust worldwide laws that make it
illegal to share pieces of Free Software. I value the work that OSI is
doing in those areas. Thanks to their new affiliation scheme, I'm
looking forward to Debian taking an active role in OSI."

Simon Phipps of the OSI welcomed Debian to the organisation, saying,
"It's great to have Debian joining the new affiliate scheme; the
project's breadth of experience will be a valuable addition. The Board
is keen to make progress and having a diverse and representative
Affiliate membership is crucial if we are to make well-founded
decisions in each of the challenging changes we anticipate."

About the Open Source Initiative
--------------------------------

The OSI are the stewards of the Open Source Definition (OSD) [5] and
the community-recognised body for reviewing and approving licenses as
OSD-conformant. The OSI is actively involved in Open Source
community-building, education, and public advocacy to promote awareness
and the importance of non-proprietary software.

Debian Project Leader Elections 2012: the candidates
----------------------------------------------------

On 2 March, Kurt Roeckx, current Debian Project Secretary, sent the call for
nominations [1] for the 2012 Debian Project Leader elections. Unlike last year,
when Stefano Zacchiroli was the only candidate, this year three candidates will
be running for DPL: Wouter Verhelst, Gergely Nagy and the current DPL Stefano
Zacchiroli.

The campaigning period has already started and will end on 31 March: the
candidates' platforms [2] are already available. You can follow the campaign on
the debian-vote mailing list [3], where the prospective leaders reply to
voters' questions. The voting period will start on 1 April and end on 14 April.

First "Squeeze" -based Debian Edu released
------------------------------------------

The first "Squeeze" -based version of Debian Edu was released [4] last week.
Debian Edu (aka "Skolelinux") is a Debian Pure Blend specifically targeted at
schools and other educational institutions, and provides a completely
configured school network environment out of the box. Petter Reinholdtsen
started a series of blogposts dedicated to Debian Edu / Skolelinux, which will
include interviews with Debian Edu users and administrators [5] and
explanations of the team's workflows [6].

Updated Debian 5.0: 5.0.10 released
-----------------------------------

The Debian project is pleased to announce the tenth and final update of its
oldstable distribution, Debian 5.0 (codename [7] "Lenny"). This update mainly
adds corrections for security problems to the oldstable release, along with a
few adjustments for other serious problems. Security advisories were already
published separately and are referenced where available.

Reports from recent Bug Squashing Parties
-----------------------------------------

Jonathan Wiltshire sent a report from the Bug Squashing Party [8] held over the
weekend of 2–4 March in Cambridge. The BSP was a success: eighteen developers
and contributors worked on 170 bugs, closing 45 bugs and adding further
information for 16 bugs. Manuel Montecelo closed the oldest bug [9], opened in
2005, while Neil Williams, requesting the removal of opensync and associated
packages [10], closed 25 bugs by a single action.

Paul Wise reported on the Perth Bug Squashing Party [11] held over the weekend
of 10–11 March. During the weekend about 10 people worked on 12 bugs, focusing
on the release critical bugs highlighted by rc-alert.

Announcing gobby.debian.org
---------------------------

Philipp Kern announced the availability of a [12] "Gobby" server hosted by
Debian. Gobby is a realtime collaborative editor which works as a standalone
desktop application. To use it, install the gobby-0.5 package [13] and then
just connect to the server at gobby.debian.org.

The Debian Kernel Team rocks!
-----------------------------

In a recent article, Stefano Zacchiroli pointed out how much the Debian Kernel
Team is contributing to upstream [14]. Not only can members of the team often
be spotted among the most active contributors to specific Linux releases, but
they were also publicly thanked by Greg Kroah-Hartman [15], current Linux
kernel maintainer for the -stable branch, with these words:
"I would personally like to thank the Debian kernel developers, specifically
Ben Hutchings, Maximilian Attems, Dann Frazier, Bastian Blank, and Moritz
Muehlenhoff. They went above and beyond what any "normal" developer would have
done, ferreting patches out of the kernel.org releases and the different vendor
kernels and bug tracking systems, backporting them to the 2.6.32 kernel,
testing, and then forwarding them on to me. Their dedication to their user
community is amazing for such a "volunteer" group of developers. I firmly
believe that without their help, the 2.6.32 kernel would not have been the
success that it was. The users of Red Hat and SuSE products owe them a great
debt."

Release-Critical bugs statistics for the upcoming release
---------------------------------------------------------

According to the Bugs Search interface of the Ultimate Debian Database [24],
the upcoming release, Debian "Wheezy", is currently affected by 573
Release-Critical bugs. Ignoring bugs which are easily solved or on the way to
being solved, roughly speaking, about 382 Release-Critical bugs remain to be
solved for the release to happen.

March 11th, 2012 http://www.debian.org/News/2012/20120311
------------------------------------------------------------------------

March 11th, 2012

The Debian Edu Team is pleased to announce the release of Debian Edu
"Squeeze" 6.0.4+r0! Debian Edu (aka "Skolelinux") is a Debian Pure
Blend specifically targeted at schools and educational institutions,
and provides a completely configured school network environment out of
the box. It covers PXE installation, PXE booting for diskless machines,
and setup for a school server, for stationary workstations, and for
workstations that can be taken away from the school network. Several
educational applications like Celestia, Dr. Geo, GCompris, GeoGebra,
Kalzium, KGeography and Solfege are included in the default desktop
setup.

Besides including everything provided by the fourth update of Debian
"Squeeze" (6.0.4), this new release of Debian Edu introduces some
interesting improvements, including: replacement of LWAT with GOsa² as
the LDAP administration interface; updated artwork and new Debian Edu /
Skolelinux logo; a new LXDE desktop option, in addition to KDE
(default) and GNOME (LXDE and GNOME are available only with the CD
installation method); faster LTSP client boot; improved handing of
removable media on thin clients; a new roaming workstation profile for
laptops; full Samba NT4 domain support for Windows XP/Vista/7; etc.
The Debian Edu Team has also worked intensively on the documentation,
improving and extending the manual which is now fully translated to
German, French and Italian, while partial translations exist for
Danish, Norwegian Bokmål and Spanish. The installation process has
also been improved, integrating the new version of debian-installer,
allowing copying of ISO images to USB sticks and changing partitioning
for Standalone installs to have a separate /home and no /usr.

When asked about the [1] advantages of Skolelinux/Debian Edu, Nigel Barker
replied: "For me the integrated setup. This is not just the server, or the
workstation, or the LTSP. It's all of them, and it's all configured
ready to go. I read somewhere in the early documentation that it is
designed to be set up and managed by the Maths or Science teacher, who
doesn't necessarily know much about computers, in a small Norwegian
school. That describes me perfectly if you replace Norway with Japan."

  1: http://people.skolelinux.org/pere/blog/Debian_Edu_interview__Nigel_Barker.html

For those who want to give Debian Edu "Squeeze" a try, [2] complete
download and installation instructions are available, including
detailed instructions in the [3] "Getting Started" chapter of the manual
explaining the first steps, such as setting up a network or adding
users.

  3: http://maintainer.skolelinux.org/debian-edu-doc/en/debian-edu-squeeze-manual.html#GettingStarted

Those who are already using rc1-3 can upgrade to this version by using
for example "apt-get upgrade" - users upgrading from beta3 must make
sure they keep the existing gosa.conf file when dpkg asks how to handle
the changed file during upgrade.

Would you like to give your school's computer a longer life? Are you
tired of sneaker administration, running from computer to computer
reinstalling the operating system? Would you like to administrate all
the computers in your school using only a couple of hours every week?
Check out Debian Edu Squeeze!

Skolelinux is used by at least two hundred schools all over the world,
mostly in Germany (in 2009 the region of Rhineland-Palatinate decided
to use it in all its schools) and Norway.

About Debian Edu
----------------

The [4] Skolelinux project was founded in Norway in 2001 with the aim of
creating a GNU/Linux distribution for schools and other educational
institutions. After merging with the French Debian Edu project in 2003,
Skolelinux became a [5] Debian Pure Blend. Today the system is in use in
several countries around the world, with most installations in Norway,
Spain, Germany and France.

Rebuild of the Debian archive with clang
----------------------------------------

Sylvestre Ledru performed a study that rebuilt the Debian archive using clang
[1], a new C/C++/Objective-C compiler. The goal was to evaluate the current
capabilities of clang for compilation and C/C++/objective-C support. Results
are available on the Debian clang web pages [2].

Debian Peru revival
-------------------

Rudy Godoy blogged about a revival of the Debian Peru local group [3]. The
Debian Peru users group was founded in 2004 and was quite active in spreading
the word about Debian and Free Software, but then slowed down its activity.
However, in the two last weeks, the group has become active again and they're
planning various events and meetings aimed at helping people to contribute to
Debian. You can find more information in the group wiki page [4] or on their
mailing list [5].

DebConf11 final report is out
-----------------------------

The DebConf organisation team released the final report of the 2011 Debian
Conference, which was held in Banja Luka, Bosnia and Herzegovina. The report
can be downloaded from the DebConf media website [6].

In related news, the DebConf committee decided that DebConf13 will take place
in Switzerland [7], likely in the middle of August. The Swiss bid narrowly won
over the bid from Riga, Latvia.

Debian Utsav
------------

Shirish Agarwal reported on the Debian Utsav [8] which took place in Pune last
month. "Debian Utsav is celebration of Debian folks — meet at one place,
eat, drink and work on Debian!" as Praveen — one of the main organisers —
explained in anannouncement message [9]. During the meeting there were some
interesting talks and workshops, such as "Debian history",
"What goes on in making Debian" and "Introducing to packaging".

March 1st, 2012

On February 20, 2012, the DebConf committee decided that DebConf13, the
Debian developer conference of 2013, should take place on the shores of
the Lake Neuchâtel in Switzerland, most likely in the middle of
August. More details may be found on the [1] organizers' wiki.

http://wiki.debconf.org/wiki/DebConf13/Switzerland/Bid

In a two hour meeting on Monday evening, the Swiss bid narrowly won
over the bid from Riga, Latvia. Teams had been preparing their bids
since mid-2011, seeking venues and local sponsors in their respective
cities and countries.

The two bids both had character and unique identities. On the one hand,
the Riga proposal was totally centered on city and university life. On
the other hand, the Swiss bid aimed to bring DebConf to a setting that
is known for its natural beauty.

"Our proposal strongly focuses on the community gathering aspect of
DebConf. Accomodation, hacking spaces and talk rooms will be at the
same place with a beautiful view over the Lake Neuchatel and to Swiss
alps. We'll have the whole holiday camp exclusively for DebConf", said
Gaudenz Steinlin, member of the Swiss team.

The DebConf organizers congratulate the future organizers of DebConf13,
and thank both teams for their efforts.

The venue decision for DebConf14 will be made in approximately twelve
months. Proposals should be submitted by 31 December 2012 to be
eligible for consideration.

About DebConf
-------------
DebConf is the Debian Project's developer conference. In addition to a full
schedule of technical, social, and policy talks, DebConf provides an
opportunity for developers, contributors, and other interested people
to meet in person and work together more closely. It has taken place
annually since 2000 in locations as varied as Scotland, Argentina, and
Bosnia and Herzegovina. More information about DebConf is available
from http://debconf.org/.

This year, DebConf12 starts on Sunday 8 July, and ends Saturday 14 July
2012. The conference will be held in Managua, Nicaragua.

DebConf will be preceded by DebCamp, from Sunday 1 July to Saturday 7
July 2012. DebCamp is a smaller, less formal event giving an
opportunity for group work on Debian projects.

On Saturday 7 July 2012, DebConf Open Day will take place at the site.
The Open Day is a short conference aimed at Debian users, and others
interested in learning more about free software.

More information about DebConf12 can be found on the [2] conference
website.

Goodbye Lenny!
- --------------

One year after the release of Debian 6.0 alias "Squeeze", and nearly three
years after the release of Debian GNU/Linux 5.0 alias "Lenny", security
support for the old "Lenny" release has been terminated [1]. The Debian project
is proud to have been able to support its old distribution for such a long
time, even continuing for a full year after the new version was released.

Debian GNU/Hurd on the rails
- ----------------------------

Samuel Thibault sent some bits from Debian GNU/Hurd porters [2] reporting
recent achievements of the team. Among other news items, Samuel confirmed that
Debian GNU/Hurd might be available as a technological preview for the "Wheezy"
release: the percentage of packages built for it has passed 70% and the
installer is available with a graphical interface.

   2 : http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel-announce/2012/02/msg00002.html

Samuel wants to thank Richard Braun who provided a new and faster Debian porter
box, immediately accessible to Debian Developers. For more information on
Debian GNU/Hurd, you can visit the Debian wiki [3].

DPL and legal work
- ------------------

Stefano Zacchiroli sent some bits from the DPL [4] which, as usual, reported
his monthly activities. During the last month, Stefano has mostly worked on
patents and legal issues, including helping David Prévot and other webmasters
in their effort to relicense the Debian website, writing a draft for a Debian
trademark policy (with the help of Benjamin Mako Hill and the SPI lawyers),
and writing a patent policy [5] for the Debian archive that has just been
published [6].

Multiarch-ready dpkg
- --------------------

Cyril Brulebois mentioned on his blog that "thanks to the hard work of dpkg
developers and many (generations of) developers", dpkg with multiarch [7] was
uploaded to experimental. He invites everyone to try and install packages with
a foreign architecture.

GPL in Debian: a study
- ----------------------

Sam Varghese wrote an article analysing John Sullivan's study on the use of
the GNU General Public Licence (GPL) in the Debian project [8]. John, executive
director at the Free Software Foundation, said during his FOSDEM 2012 talk
titled "Is copyleft being framed?" that 93% of Debian "Squeeze"'s packages
are released under licences in the GPL family (including the GPL, the Affero
GPL and LGPL), showing a constant and significant increase from the previous
releases. The numbers in the talk were calculated using an existing Debian
tool, but Russ Allbery mentioned that it wasn't designed to be used this
way [9], so the current figures are only preliminary.

Update for Debian 6.0: 6.0.4 released
-------------------------------------

The fourth update for Debian 6.0 (codenamed [1] "Squeeze" ) has been released.
This update mainly adds corrections for security problems to the stable
release, along with some adjustments for serious problems.

Bits from the Release Team
--------------------------

Niels Thykier sent some bits from the Release Team [2] where he announced
various bits of news: the addition of armhf and s390x to testing (though these
architectures may be temporarily out of sync with the others), the acceptance
of a new release goal ( "security hardening build flags" ), and the completion
of more than fourteen transitions to testing (including GNOME 3, Perl 5.14,
Python 2.7, etc.). Niels also issued a reminder that the freeze is due in June,
even if an exact freeze date has not been selected.

In addition, Niels announced that Cyril Brulebois joined the Release Team,
becoming Release Assistant: congratulations Cyril!

Bits from the piuparts maintainers
----------------------------------

Holger Levsen sent some bits from the piuparts maintainers [3] announcing that
piuparts is again maintained by a team and they're receiving various patches
and other contributions. piuparts is an important tool for Quality Assurance
within Debian as it runs various tests in order to verify that packages can be
installed, upgraded and removed without problems. Tests results are publicly
available on the piuparts website [4], where they are updated on a daily basis.
Holger urged maintainers to regularly check their personal status pages on
piuparts in order to fix issues related to their packages. In addition to their
regular tests, since December 2011, the piuparts maintainers have been testing
the upgrade of individual packages from [5] "Squeeze" to "Wheezy" : 158
packages failed the test (and another 130 failed it due to dependencies) while
33,708 passed it.

Report from Debian Med sprint
-----------------------------

Andreas Tille sent a report from the Debian Med sprint [6] held in Southport,
UK on 27-29 January. Among other activities, the Debian Med team fixed some
bugs, mentored new members and students (consolidating the effort made via the
[7] "Mentoring of the Month" initiative) and packaged new software.

For more information on Debian Med activity, you can check their real time
activity page [8].

Setting up a new school with Debian Edu/Squeeze
-----------------------------------------------

Petter Reinholdtsen announced on his blog that the next version of Debian
Edu/Squeeze will contain a new tool, called sitesummary2ldapdhcp [9], which
allows all the computers of a school to be quickly set up with a minimal number
of manual steps. Once the central server is installed, this tool collects data
from the network to generate system objects in the LDAP database. After a few
modifications of the configuration from a GUI, the network of computers is
ready to use.

A third beta version of Debian Edu based on "Squeeze" and containing this tool
has just been released.

Answering Debian users' questions
---------------------------------

Raphaël Hertzog wrote a useful blogpost about how to answer the questions of
Debian users [10] and, in general, how to support new users. There are many
places for helping users (mailing lists [11], IRC channels [12], questions &
answers websites [13], etc.) each with different characteristics, but the
golden rule for every support channel is to be respectful and courteous (as
stated in the Debian Community Guidelines [14]).

Debian/Ubuntu games screenshot party
------------------------------------

Paul Wise announced a Debian/Ubuntu games screenshot party [15] to be held on
25 and 26 February and organised by the Games Team [16]. The idea is to create
screenshots for as many games in Debian/Ubuntu as possible and upload them to
screenshots.debian.net [17] in order to have them available to goplay [18] (a
games package browser).

GNOME Shell 3.2 in "Wheezy" : a retrospective
----------------------------------------------

Jordi Mallach wrote an article on the transition from GNOME 2 to GNOME 3 in
Debian [20] from the Debian GNOME Team point of view. "When you’re dealing
with dozens of GNOME source packages at the same time, many of which introduce
new libraries, or worse, introduce incompatible APIs that affect many more
unrelated packages, things get hairy, and you need a plan" Jordi said. But even
with a plan for a smooth transition, they encountered a lot of difficulties,
such as failures to build from source on various architectures and
incompatibilities with other packages. Finally GNOME Shell 3.2 has transitioned
to Debian's testing suite and Jordi thanks not only all Debian GNOME Team
members, but also Release Team members Julien Cristau and Cyril Brulebois and
FTP assistant Luca Falavigna, who helped in reaching this goal.

Micheal Gilbert wrote an article on a recent security flaw [28] (CVE-2012-0064
[29]) and how it was handled by distributions. Thanks also to the detailed
research by the discoverer of the issue, Debian reacted really fast and the
issue was already fixed in Debian unstable less than six hours after the
disclosure.

Debian ahead on web servers
---------------------------

According to a recent W3Techs survey [1], Debian has just surpassed CentOS to
become the most popular GNU/Linux distribution on web servers. The survey is
based on the analysis of the top million web sites according to Alexa, in order
to select a representative sample of established sites, and focused only on the
technologies used for web sites (and not individual web pages or desktop
installations). In fact, at the beginning of 2012, Debian was used by 29.4% of
all Linux-based sites (and by 9.7% of all web sites), while CentOS was used by
29.1% of all Linux-based sites (and by 9.5% of all web sites). Debian "is also
the fastest growing operating system at the moment: every day 54 of the top 1
million sites switch to Debian" , said Matthias Gelbmann in the article. With
regard to the geographical distribution of web sites using Debian, the most are
in Europe (with 39.7% of all sites in Germany, 36.1% in Poland, 33.6% in France
and 26.4% in Russia).

   1 : http://w3techs.com/blog/entry/debian_is_now_the_most_popular_linux_distribution_on_web_servers

Dummy web server in Debian?
---------------------------

Thomas Goirand recently proposed to relax or even remove some dependencies [2]
of web applications on a web server package. This would help users wanting to
install such web applications in chroots, while the web server is installed
only outside the chroot. During the following discussion, several solutions
were proposed, such as providing a dummy web server package in Debian. It was
pointed out that such dummy packages are actually very easy to create with the
equivs [3] package, which deserves to be better known.

   2 : http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2012/01/msg00148.html
   3 : http://packages.debian.org/equivs

Aptitude strikes back
---------------------

Christian Perrier blogged about the recent revival of the aptitude package
manager [4]. As the main maintainer had less time to dedicate to it, the number
of bugs against aptitude was continually growing and reached more than 800. But
last November, Daniel Harwig and Manuel A. Fernandez Montecelo started working
on it, triaging bugs and preparing a possible new version. If you want to help
them, join the aptitude-devel [5] mailing list on Alioth.

About donations to Debian
-------------------------

Stefano Zacchiroli blogged about how donations to Debian are used by the
project [6]. First of all, Stefano explained how money is used in the Debian
Project: to buy hardware and hardware-related services for Debian
infrastructure, to sponsor contributor sprints, or to support travel expenses
in order to allow Debian Developers to represent Debian at conferences and
meetings. Then, Stefano noted that almost all donations to Debian come from
private citizens and not from big corporate sponsors: corporates mostly sponsor
DebConf (the Debian annual conference). At the end, Stefano pointed out that
it's possible to check how Debian spends donated money: by reading the minutes
of SPI monthly meetings [7] or the list of sprints [8], visiting the DPL wiki
page [9] and consulting the DebConf reports [10]. Stefano also added that over
the next month he will be working to further improve the transparency of
Debian's budget.

   8 : http://wiki.debian.org/Sprints
   9 : http://wiki.debian.org/Teams/DPL
   10 : http://media.debconf.org/

On the subject of Debian's usage of money, Yves-Alexis Perez proposed to
advocate hardware sponsoring [11]. Since asking for money for oneself is not
always the first reflex, he proposed to turn the offer the other way around: if
you believe that a Debian Developer could use some money for hardware purposes,
you should raise your voice and propose it yourself, in case the developer was
too shy to ask, for example.

Armhf status in Debian
----------------------

Steve McIntyre blogged about the status of the armhf port in Debian [12]. Since
mid-2011, he has been working on armhf as a new architecture in "debian-ports"
; then in December it was imported into the main Debian archive. The current
state of auto-building can be viewed at thearmhf buildd status page [13].

IGMP denial of service in Linux
-------------------------------

Ben Hutchings wrote an interesting report on a security issue in Linux [14]
found by himself while working on bug #654876 [15]. As his laptop running Linux
3.0 or 3.1 crashed repeatedly, Simon McVittie — the bug submitter —
thought it could be a driver bug. But, analysing the log of the crash, Ben
noted that "a packet received through the wireless interface was being
processed by IGMP, which then divided by zero." IGMP packets are used to
support multicast routers: as Ben explained, "every multicast address
corresponds to a dynamic set of hosts, called a multicast group" . In order to
know which hosts belong to which groups, the router sends packets and the
computer replies at intervals. There are three different versions of the IGMP
protocol used to define the Maximum Response Time (MRT) of the computer. Ben
found that the crash was caused by a division by 0 of packets with an MRT of 0.
The patch is included in Linux 3.0.17, 3.1.9, 3.2.1, and the Debian packaged
version 3.1.8-2. Well done, Ben!

Other news
----------

Gerfried Fuchs wrote an interesting article about a Release Critical
bug-squashing effort for Stable [17]. Stable RC bugs are often not noted, as
people usually concentrate on Unstable RC bugs, but - as Gerfried noted - "it
is one of our supported releases and thus should receive quite some attention,
at least by the corresponding package maintainers themself."

Enrico Zini announced that the Debtags web site also works for derivative
distributions [18]: the site now shows packages from Ubuntu too, and can be
extended to all Debian derivatives.

Release-Critical bug statistics for the upcoming release
--------------------------------------------------------

According to the Bugs Search interface of the Ultimate Debian Database
[32], the upcoming release,
Debian 7.0 "Wheezy" , is currently affected by 736 Release-Critical
bugs. Ignoring bugs which are easily solved or on the way to being solved,
roughly speaking, about 495 Release-Critical bugs remain to be solved for the
release to happen.

There are also more detailed statistics [33] as well as some hints on
how to interpret [34] these numbers.

Debian Edu/Skolelinux 6.0.3 beta2 released
------------------------------------------

Petter Reinholdtsen announced the release of Debian Edu Squeeze 6.0.3
beta2 [1]: download and installation instructions [2] are available on
the wiki, and in particular a useful[3] "Getting Started" chapter in
which you can find explanations of how to log in for the first time.
Feedback and installation reports can be sent to the Debian Edu mailing
list [4].

Debian Edu is a project aiming to make a Debian Pure Blend for
educational purposes, which can be used in schools and other educational
institutions. The Debian Edu project develops and maintains Skolelinux
[5], a complete and free "out of the box" software solution for schools.

Bits from the DPL
-----------------

Stefano Zacchiroli sent some bits from the DPL [7] in which he reported
about the work done by Martin Michlmayr as Auditor, in order to
reconstruct Debian's expenses and budgets. Stefano also sent a call for
help for Wheezy artwork organisation, and announced that Gunnar Wolf has
volunteered to monitor the discussion regarding the Creative Commons
process for revision 4.0 on behalf of Debian.

Forthcoming new release of the X server
---------------------------------------

Cyril Brulebois blogged about the forthcoming X server release 1.12 [8]:
one major change is the addition of XI2.2 patches, which are related to
multitouch support. Another significant change is the addition of
support for Intel's Sandy Bridge New Acceleration in the Debian
packages.

Scientific article on Debian in PNAS
------------------------------------

Michael Hanke noted [9] that the Proceedings of the National Academy of
Science ("PNAS") of the United States of America has apaper on the
evolution of software in Debian [10].

   9 : http://lists.debian.org/debian-project/2011/12/msg00000.html

New Debian Infographic
----------------------

Claudio Filho has published a beautiful infographic about Debian [12].
The main motivation was, as Claudio said [13], "to "draw" for final
users how Debian can be good for them". Similar efforts have been made
by Stéphane Blondon [14] and Chris Lamb [15], who created the Debian
Timeline website [16] and the related Debian package [17].

New interface for Debtags website
---------------------------------

Enrico Zini announced a new interface for the Debtags website [18].
Debtags is a project to classify Debian packages by adding tags to them:
"Debtags attaches categories (we call them tags) to packages, creating a
new set of useful structured metadata that can be used to implement more
advanced ways of presenting, searching, maintaining and navigating the
package archive", Enrico saidwhile presenting the project in 2005 [19].
Using the new interface, it is possible to search packages [20], take a
look at statistics about Debtags [21] and, obviously, help with the
tagging effort [22]. For more information about Debtags, you can visit
the related wiki page [23].

apt-get purge defoma
--------------------

Paul Wise reported that the transition from defoma to fontconfig is
finally complete [24]. Defoma is the Debian-specific font manager, long
unmaintained, while the replacement (fontconfig) is cross-distribution
and also has wide support from upstreams. In the past three years the
Debian Fonts Task Force [25] has worked a lot in order to gain this
result, thanks especially to the work of Christian Perrier and Paul
Wise. Please note that the transition is not completely smooth: "Xorg
does not yet support fontconfig so for now programs relying on
server-side fonts will only be able to use thexfonts- packages shipping
their fonts in the directories known by the X server" and in addition
"there are some issues [26] with Ghostscript and CJK", Paul said.

Further interviews
------------------

Since the last issue of the Debian Project News, two new issues of the
[27] "This week in Debian" podcast have been published: with Jonathan
Nadeau [28], about the Northeast GNU/Linux Fest; and with Raphael
Hertzog [29], about the Debian handbook.

The Debian Project was mentioned in an article by Bruce Byfield on
Datamation titled[41] "2011: The Year of Linux Disappointments" .
According to the author, in fact, while various Open Source projects saw
a decline in 2011, the Debian project"spent much of 2011 reinventing
itself. In the past few twelve months, it has -- among other things --
tried to encourage cooperation among its derivatives, revamped its new
member process, and experimented with IRC training sessions."

Release-critical bugs statistics for the upcoming release
---------------------------------------------------------

According to the Bugs Search interface of the Ultimate Debian Database
[56], the upcoming release, Debian 7.0 "Wheezy", is currently affected
by 797 release-critical bugs. Ignoring bugs which are easily solved or
on the way to being solved, roughly speaking, about 532 release-critical
bugs remain to be solved for the release to happen.

   56 : http://udd.debian.org/bugs.cgi

There are also more detailed statistics [57] as well as some hints on
how to interpret [58] these numbers.

Status of Debian Installer localisation
---------------------------------------

In his last report on Debian Installer localisation [59], Christian
Perrier noted that eighteen languages are currently up to date for D-I's
core files; ten (Czech, German, Spanish, French, Italian, Kazakh, Dutch,
Portuguese, Russian and Slovak) are 100% complete for the moment.

Christian informed us previously [60] that "A very important and
critical fix to partman-zfs broke a string in sublevel 4." That explains
why the results are lower than thelast time [61] we relayed the
translation status, but translators are quickly working to make the
Debian Installer completely available in many languages.

Feedback and installation reports can be sent to the Debian Edu mailing
list [4].

   3 : http://wiki.debian.org/DebianEdu/Documentation/Squeeze/GettingStarted
   4 : http://lists.debian.org/debian-edu/

Debian Edu is a project aiming to make a Debian Pure Blend for
educational purposes, which can be used in schools and other educational
institutions. The Debian Edu project develops and maintains Skolelinux
[5], a complete and free "out of the box" software solution for schools.
For more information about Debian Edu, please visit therelated wiki page
[6].

   7 : http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel-announce/2012/01/msg00001.html

Forthcoming new release of the X server
---------------------------------------

Cyril Brulebois blogged about the forthcoming X server release 1.12 [8]:
one major change is the addition of XI2.2 patches, which are related to
multitouch support. Another significant change is the addition of
support for Intel's Sandy Bridge New Acceleration in the Debian
packages.

   8 : http://blog.mraw.org/2012/01/01/XServer_1.12RC1/

Scientific article on Debian in PNAS
------------------------------------

Michael Hanke noted [9] that the Proceedings of the National Academy of
Science ("PNAS") of the United States of America has apaper on the
evolution of software in Debian [10].

   9 : http://lists.debian.org/debian-project/2011/12/msg00000.html
   10 : http://www.pnas.org/content/early/2011/11/14/1115960108.abstract

If you know other studies about Debian and its software, you can add it
to our related wiki page [11].

   11 : http://wiki.debian.org/CategoryPublication

There has also been a "People behind Debian" interview withi Ben Hutchings
[30], member of the kernel team.

Asheesh Laroia wrote an interesting article about short key IDs with
OpenPGP and GNU Privacy Guard [40], arguing that using them is
fundamentally insecure as it's easy to generate collisions for short key
IDs.

Martin Zobel-Helas announced that he has applied the main theme of
Debian website to db.debian.org, the internal LDAP directory of Debian
Developers [42]. In the previous days, thanks to Cristoph Berg, the
Debian Quality Assurance website [43] had also switched to the main
theme.

Volunteers needed for publicity team
------------------------------------

As you may have noticed, it has been quite some time since the last edition
of Debian Project News. To improve the frequency of DPN and expand its other
activities, the Debian Publicity team is looking for new contributors. Did you
ever want to help Debian, but every piece of software you were interested in
was already packaged? You don't consider yourself a "technical person"? You
have basic skills in written English? Perfect! Have you considered joining the
Publicity Team [1]? If you are a Debian member, the Press team is also looking
for new contributors.

Removal of sun-java6 from the archive
-------------------------------------

The release of Java update 29 from Oracle marks not only security updates, but
a change to the licensing, removing Debian's ability to distribute the non-free
JVM. The clause in the Java license under which we were able to distribute
Java, the DLJ, has been removed. As a result, the sun-java6 package is no
longer suitable for the archive, and has been removed, as documented in Debian
Bug #646524 [2]. Sylvestre Ledru suggests [3] that sun-java6 installs be
migrated to openjdk, the open-source alternative, using the following command:
apt-get --purge remove sun-java6-jre && apt-get install openjdk-7-jre
Kai Wasserbäch has also been pointed out elsewhere [4] that this upgrade path
might not be suitable for all Java programs, and special attention should be
paid to re-testing installed Java applications on OpenJDK.

Debian SDL packaging team revival
---------------------------------

The SDL packaging team [5] has recently been seriously revived [6], with
Dominique Dumont reorganising the team and Manuel A. Fernandez Montecelo
joining the effort. Packaging is progressively moving to Git for easier
collaboration, and developers maintaining SDL-related packages not in the
team's repository have been invited to join, too. A lot of old bugs have
already been fixed and new SDL 1.3 and sdl-perl packages have been uploaded to
experimental. SDL 1.3 brings support for newer OpenGL APIs, input improvements
like multi-touch, gestures and force feedback device support, better Unicode
support and support for multiple windows and displays.

Bits from the DPL
-----------------

Stefano Zacchiroli sent his "Bits from the DPL" for October [7] and November [8].
He reminds us that the New Maintainer Process has been renamed as the New
Member Process, and that a list of "easy hacks" is a very effective way of
attracting contributors to teams. He notes that Ubuntu plan to deprecate their
package review platform (REVU) in favour of converging on mentors.debian.net.
This will need some Debexpo changes and also more package sponsorship by Debian
members. Stefano has approved funds for the recent DebConf video team sprint
and also hardware replacements for lists.debian.org and ftp.debian.org, which
have now arrived and are in the process of being set up by DSA. He reports that
Fathi Boudra represented Debian at the Software Freedom Day in Algeria. Stefano
also reported on his trademark-related activities, including a contact point
for inquiries related to the Debian trademark, seeking legal advice on how
trademark law applies to Debian packaging activities, and starting a discussion
on the relationships between the DFSG and trademark restrictions. He is also
working on a statement to make explicit the position of the Debian Project on
software patents. The OSI have invited the Debian Project to their upcoming
affiliation programme. There is also work in progress to have the Debian
Project become a member of the forums for ISC software that we distribute.
Stefano also mentioned his continuing work in creating a discussion forum for
companies that have a strategic interest in Debian.

Ubuntu appreciates Debian
-------------------------

As part of Ubuntu's recent Community Appreciation Day [9], Michael Hall sent
Debian a message of appreciation [10], stating "Without you we wouldn't be
able to make the contributions we do. Ubuntu is great because Debian is great,
and we appreciate all of the work that goes into making it that way."
Michael will be joining [11] Canonical's Community Team, focusing on projects
that are upstream for Ubuntu.

India mini-DebConf, Mangalore edition
-------------------------------------

Christian Perrier reported [12] on his participation in the mini-DebConf in
Mangalore, south-west India [13]. The conference was held at Nitte MahaLinga
Adyanthaya Memorial Institute of Technology and organised by Vasudev Kamath and
a team of computer-science students from the college with support from staff,
including the college principal, Dr. S. Y. Kulakarni. Christian gave the
opening talk, introducing Debian, how to contribute, and information about
Debian internationalisation and localisation. Later Jonas Smedegaard presented
a talk about Debian Pure Blends, focusing on how distributions derived from
Debian can work inside Debian instead of outside of it. This was part of his
trip [14] promoting Debian and Debian Pure Blends in Asia. The talks were
followed on the second day with sessions on localisation, packaging, OpenPGP
keys and contributing to Debian. The event was publicised in one of the major
newspapers in India, namely "The Hindu". Events such as these are vital to
local communities. The participation of "international" contributors in these
events often brings more attention to them and is highly appreciated by the
local community.

New mirror in El Salvador
-------------------------

The Debian mirrors team is happy to announce the first mirror in El Salvador [15],
sponsored by the Ministry of Health [16], with the help of René Mayorga
and Carlos Juan Martín Pérez. Salvadorian Debian users are invited to update
their /etc/apt/sources.list in order to use ftp.sv.debian.org. To quote Carlos
Juan Martín Pérez "For us, the Ministry of Health, and as members of the
Salvadorian Community of Free Software, is an honour to belong to the great
Debian family." For other countries, the full list of mirrors [17] is available
online. There are still many countries lacking good connectivity to a Debian
mirror; sponsors interested in hosting are invited to contact the mirrors team.

Debexpo maintainers call for contributions
------------------------------------------

Discussing the potential integration of packaging teams into Debexpo, the
software behind the mentors.debian.net [18] service, Arno Töll issued a call
for contributions [19], since the current team members are busy.

Debexpo [20] is maintained as an Alioth project [21].

Bug Squashing Party marathon started
------------------------------------

Similarly to previous releases [22,23,24,25], a marathon of Bug Squashing
Parties (BSPs) has been started with concurrent BSPs being held in
Hildesheim [26], Germany and Portland [27], OR, USA. While the first one
concentrated on fixing Release Critical bugs, the second concentrated on
creating multiarch patches for different libraries.

   27 : http://www.debian.org/events/2011/1204-ubulocjam-debbsp

Both BSPs were quite successful. In Hildesheim 60 Release Critical bugs were
addressed [28] and several improvements to the archive software [29]
introduced, while in Portland 14 multiarch patches [30] were created! They also
noted down how to prepare cloud instances [31] in preparation for Bug Squashing
Parties.

The next Bug Squashing Parties in Mönchengladbach, Germany (January
or February) and Paris, France (17 to 19 February) are already being
organised [32]. The Debian Wiki has more information about organising a
BSP [33], should you consider organising your own.

Call for talks: FOSDEM 2012
---------------------------

Wouter Verhelst sent a call for talks for the distribution developers room [36]
at the upcoming FOSDEM 2012 [37], the Free and Open Source Software Developers'
European Meeting. The FOSDEM takes place in Brussels, Belgium in early February
2012. Acceptable sessions can be any wide range of things, including talks, BoF
sessions, and round tables. Two cross-distributions devrooms are intended to be
for people from any participating distribution project, and may cover
Debian-specific subjects, or indeed targeted at Debian developers only.

New s390 buildd at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology
----------------------------------------------------

Philipp Kern announced [38] that zemlinsky [39], a new Debian buildd hosted at
Karlsruhe Institute of Technology [40], is now available to support the s390(x)
ports [41]. Thanks to this new host, s390x is progressing pretty quickly [42]:
this new fast builder is one of the reasons why the slope is so steep.

Release-critical bugs statistics for the upcoming release
---------------------------------------------------------

According to the Bugs Search interface of the Ultimate Debian Database [56],
the upcoming release, Debian 7.0 "Wheezy", is currently affected by 1005
release-critical bugs. Ignoring bugs which are easily solved or on the way to
being solved, roughly speaking, about 849 release-critical bugs remain to be
solved for the release to happen.

There are also more detailed statistics [57] as well as some hints on
how to interpret [58] these numbers.

DebConf12 official dates
------------------------

The DebConf team announced the final and official dates for DebConf12
[3]: DebCamp will be held from July 1 to 7 2012, followed by DebConf from
July 8 to 14, in Managua, Nicaragua. DebConf will be preceded by a day

Debian Installer localisation
-----------------------------

Christian Perrier reported some new progress [5] in Debian Installer
localisation [6]. Nineteen languages are now up to date for D-I's core
files; eight (Czech, Dutch, French, German, Persian, Portuguese, Russian
and Swedish) are 100% complete for the moment, and many more should reach
this hall of fame pretty soon, thanks to the translators.

Feedback after DebConf11
------------------------

After his "This week in Debian" interview, Adnan Hodzic wrote a summary
of DebConf11 and its consequences [7]. He offers an inside view of
DebConf organisation, sharing some of the stresses and the amazing
experiences he had with other organisers. Among the after-effects: the
Government of Republika Srpska may seriously consider free and open
source software for their own use, and Adnan has taken a vacation to
prepare himself for his next projects.

Uses of Emdebian
----------------

Continuing his series on Emdebian [8], Neil Williams posted an article
about the use of Emdebian on special purpose computers [9]. The common
features of special purpose computers include: single task only,
single-user support, single mode input, restricted connectivity,
constrained user data. On this kind of computer Emdebian is very popular
for many reasons, such as the multi-tasking kernel and userspace which
provide a responsive machine, or the mere fact that in Emdebian (unlike
proprietary competitors) the graphical software is trivially separated
from the core software. But the most important reason is that Emdebian
Grip allows better debugging: in fact,"Emdebian Grip is binary
compatible with the equivalent Debian suite and when a bug appears in the
high level user interface, it is much easier to debug that on the desktop
than on the device", said Neil.

Bits from the DPL
-----------------

Stefano Zacchiroli reminded us that Wheezy is a few months away from its
freeze [10]: everyone can help. He reported about some discussions that
are worth attention [11]; about maintainers' and porters'
responsibilities [12]; reasons not to use private email aliases [13];
etc. Stefano gave updates about sprints (for coordinating which there is
a new mailing list [14]) and the trademark policy. He also recently
attended the "Linux Day" in Parma, Italy, and the Ubuntu Developer
Summit in Orlando, Florida.

New Member process
------------------

Enrico Zini announced that the"New Maintainer process" has changed its
name, to become the "New Member process [15]": the procedure is still the
same, and even its initials are unchanged, but its name is no longer
confusing and ambiguous. Thanks to Stefano Zacchiroli for hisproposal
[16]. Jan Hauke Rahm also joined the New Member Front Desk, which can now
be reached at nm< at >debian.org [17].

DebConf12 Nicaragua dates confirmed
DebConf12 to take place in Managua, Nicaragua in July 2012

The Debian Project, the team behind the free Debian operating system, has
confirmed the dates and venue for its next annual conference, DebConf12.

The conference will take place from July 8 to July 14 2012, in Managua,
Nicaragua. In DebConf's twelve-year history, this will be the first time
it will be held in Central America.

Every year, DebConf allows new and existing Debian project participants
from around the world to assemble, share knowledge, make collaborative
contributions to Debian, and build tighter community bonds. Conference
costs are largely funded by corporate sponsors who find significant value
in enabling Debian's success.

"The members of the Debian community in Nicaragua, working together with
their fellow communities in Central America, are very excited to be
hosting this event, and are happy to welcome our colleagues from around
the world to join us in Managua at this very important and productive
conference" says Leandro Gómez, leader of the local team for
DebConf12. "This conference will boost the local Debian and Free Software
communities and help to bring awareness for the Debian Project, with new
contributors and enthusiasts from our country and the surrounding region
joining the Debian community and helping Debian to build the best
operating system."

DebConf will be preceded by a day when it opens its doors to the general
public, commonly called Debian Day. There will be talks and
demonstrations about the benefits of Debian and Free and Open Source
software in general to corporate, governmental, academic, and individual
users.

The call for papers and registration will open in early 2012.

DebConf12 will be preceded by DebCamp, the yearly developer work
sessions, starting on July 1.

The final calendar of the event is:

July 1-7 2012:DebCamp, the yearly developer work sessions

  July 7 2012:Debian Day

  July 8-14 2012:DebConf12

  July 15 2012:Departure/cleanup day

Debian's 18th birthday
----------------------

On August 16 the Debian Project turned 18 [1]: for that occasion, across
the world there were various parties [2] organised by Debian Developers,
Maintainers, Contributors and Users. Pictures of these parties can be
viewed at the Debian Birthday website [3], where the project has
collected 2230 thanks messages! The Debian Project takes this opportunity
to thank all its users and contributors, and its upstream developers.

The Project has also received some birthday cakes [4] from Polish users:
thank you!

Bits from the DPL
-----------------

Stefano Zacchiroli sent some Bits from the DPL, reporting his activities
for July [5] and August [6]. The first mail includes some interesting
news on trademarks: a potential issue with the redistribution of GNOME
[7] (according to a strict interpretation of the GNOME trademark) was
solved [8] partly during DebConf, with the help of Karen Sandler
(Executive Director of the GNOME foundation). With regard to the Debian
trademark, thanks to Jimmy Kaplowitz (SPI director) and Mishi Choudhary
(lawyer at SFLC) a survey of existing Debian-related trademark was
completed and the trademark on the name "DEBIAN" was extended to the
European Union, China and Japan. In the second mail, Stefano writes about
the services administration initiative, started by Enrico Zini [9], and
reports on his participation at the GNU Hackers Meeting.

Debian Bug Squashing Party at MIT
---------------------------------

Asheesh Laroia blogged about the Bug Squashing Party held at the MIT in
Cambridge, USA [10] on August 21. The event was promoted by Geoffrey
Thomas for MIT's student computing group and went quite well: the
attendees, some of them having their first experience as Debian
contributors, fixed several release-critical bugs with the help of the
present developers.

And speaking of bugs, Gregor Herrmann resumed work on the Release
Critical Bugs of the Week (RCBW) initiative [11], launched in 2009 by
Stefano Zacchiroli, which consists of fixing one Release Critical bug per
day. Gregor, one of the most active developers in this initiative,
observed that in this phase of the development cycle there are plenty of
RC bugs, some of them really easy to fix [12]. It's possible to use the
UDD bugs page [13] to search in the BTS for RC bugs. If fixing bugs is
too much for you, you can help triaging them, as explained in the useful
tutorial [14] blogged by Raphaël Hertzog.

Squeeze backports for Xorg
--------------------------

Cyril Brulebois announced the availability of X.Org Server backports for
Squeeze [15]. These backports are particularly useful for people who need
a newer driver, while users with a perfectly working X could stay with
its old version. For those interested in the backported Xorg, a
documentation page [16] is also available.

Debian feeds on Identi.ca and Twitter
-------------------------------------

In order to highlight the work done by Debian and to improve the
availability of such information, Sylvestre Ledru introduced three new
feeds on identi.ca [17]:

   17 : http://lists.debian.org/debian-publicity/2011/08/msg00034.html

  * Debian new packages [18], which shows the new packages submitted to the
Debian Archive (also available on Twitter [19]).
  * Debian bugs [20], which provides a feed of the new bugs (also available on
    Twitter [21]).
  * Debian removed packages [22], which provides a feed of the removed packages
in the archive (also available on Twitter [23]).

Debian in Myanmar
-----------------

Theppitak Karoonboonyanan sent a report of his visit to Yangon [24] where
he delivered some talks and tutorials on Debian packaging and mirroring.
In particular, Theppitak has done the preliminary actions to realise a
Debian mirror in Myanmar; sadly, due to Myanmar's internet policy, SSH
connections between domestic and international sites are prohibited, so
only local people will be able to maintain the mirror. Another
interesting initiative was the start of packaging of resources for
Myanmar languages support; in addition Thura Hlaing and Ngwe Tun started
a translation process for Myanmar in Debian and in GNOME. He also
reported that GNU/Linux is not popular in Myanmar due to lack of internet
access, which is mostly provided by internet cafés rather than from
homes.

Further interviews
------------------

There have been two "People behind Debian" interviews: with Peter
Palfrader [25], Debian System Administrator; and with Enrico Zini [26],
member of the New Maintainer Frontdesk.

Enrico Zini announced the creation of a new mailing list [28]:
debian-services-admin [29], aiming to create a single point of contact
for issues with Debian infrastructure services. In addition, Enrico
promoted a census of those services: you can consult the first results of
the census on the related wiki page [30].

Niels Thykier sent some bits from the Lintian maintainers [33] in order
to announce changes in Lintian 2.5.2. Lintian [34] is a useful (and
widely used) tool for checking Debian packages in order to find bugs and
policy violations before upload to the Debian archive. This new version
includes several new features, including the ability to process related
