Garbaged X11 emacs windows

Hello,

Starting a few days ago, GNU Emacs became unusable for me on X11.

If I perform some operation within emacs that updates the contents of the
buffer, the X11 window displays something like the new contents
superimposed on the old contents.

For example, if I run "emacs -q" , it will launch and show the *GNU Emacs*
buffer with the welcome text and the red and blue drawing of the gnu. If I
hit "C-h i" to go to the top level of Info, the X11 window shows the
standard *info* buffer mixed with of the *GNU Emacs* buffer- part of the
red/blue drawing is visible, as well as some of the welcome text.

The terminal version of emacs does not have this problem- if I run "emacs
-nw", this garbaging doesn't happen.

If I switch to a different virtual desktop, then switch back to the virtual
desktop containing emacs, or if I resize the X11 emacs window, the emacs
X11 window becomes ungarbaged. Unfortunately, if I perform another
operation within emacs, the emacs X11 window immediately becomes garbaged
again.

Since I usually use the development version of emacs24 straight from
bazaar, at first I assumed that it was a new emacs bug, but this also
happens with the Debian emacs23 package as well, so I suspect the problem
is with a Debian X11-related package. OTOH, I haven't noticed any program
besides emacs exhibiting this behavior, so I'm unsure which package to
report the bug against.

I'm primarily running testing/wheezy, but I occasionally install packages
from unstable.

Any advice for debugging or bug reporting is very welcome!

the load path for each emacsen (which is enforced for add-ons via
debian-pkg-add-load-path-item -- see section 9).

But please let me know if I've overlooked something.

upgrading emacs when emacs is still running

Every time on Debian I use aptitude to
The following packages will be upgraded:
  emacs-snapshot  emacs-snapshot-bin-common (for emacs-snapshot)
  emacs-snapshot-common (for emacs-snapshot, emacs-snapshot-el)
  emacs-snapshot-el
I have to remember to exit any running emacs sessions first, lest
later encountering problems when old emacs reads new .elcs, etc.
Updating Firefox never has such problems.
OK, hard to work around, also too much fuss to put warnings into the
Debian update script: "a running emacs session was detected, proceed?"

DELETE-FRAME kills Emacs daemon

the GUI emacsclient using `delete-frame'.

The last worked version is 1:20110914-1.

I found someone has already reported this bug to the upstream bug
tracker [1].  But I don't know whether it's a bug from the packaging

can no longer suspend emacs and get back to the shell

Try this with Debian emacs-snapshot 1:20110902-1 and icewm in an xterm:
$ emacs -Q
Then in emacs hit ^Z
Now we are staring at the calling shell's window.
But we cannot do anything.
This started happening two weeks ago.

The interesting thing is that if one now does ALT TAB twice, switching
back and forth to the shell window again, one can now type ^Z, ^C etc.
like one used to be able to.

So that means this must not be an emacs problem, but instead an icewm or
X windows problem, just like what happens when one exits firefox, one
needs to switch back and forth to regain the ability to type into the
original shell.

In emacs' case the problem occurs when one types ^Z, not at exit though.

when you start gnus,
as e.g., the # alone will cause it to be invalid lisp.
The cure is to downgrade your emacs-snapshot to a previous version,
and replace the (setq gnus-format-specs ... of your .newsrc.eld with a
previous version from your backups. You did make backups...

You know isn't it rather silly/dangerous to trust everything to the
fragile monolithic .newsrc.eld file not getting damaged. If the gnus
designers are going to play so dangerously, maybe they should split it
into several different files.
