[PATCH] Add documentation for dpkg/version.h

Hi,

Attached is a proposed patch to add doxygen documentation for the
contents of dpkg/version.h. I was not sure if you would have preferred
a bug for this or not, so here it is by mail. The resulting doxygen
documentation can be seen at [1].

As an added bonus, there is also a typo fix for doc/coding-style.txt

~Niels

It seems that since around 2012-04-18, there's been no more mails on
git pushes coming through to the debian-dpkg-cvs list. Maybe they got
stuck in some queue in alioth or lists.debian.org?

Checking now my logs it seems the time matches when lists switched
from liszt to bendel.

thanks,
guillem

Upcoming dpkg string changes

Hi!

As mentioned in the 1.16.3 upload mail, I've some pending changes
affecting original strings, and will be using the opportunity to do
some cleanups given that I'm touching them anyway. As such I'd
recommend holding off any translations for now, to avoid useless
work, also in case there's some later rectifications for example.
I'll send another mail once it seems safe to restart translation
work.

The things I've either pending locally or which I'll be working on in
the coming days are mostly --help output and error strings, for the
later I'll probably send a patch series to the list for review by
native speakers and translators.

I'm explicitly CCing Helge and Sven, because you are pretty reactive
to code changes, so to make sure you know what's going on.

thanks,
guillem

  * Do not look for newline beyond the read buffer on dpkg-deb extract.
  * Check update-alternative name and link arguments for all commands.
    Closes: #665050
  * Check all dpkg-divert filename arguments to be absolute and to not
    contain newlines. Closes: #21722
  * Print errors while reading the file list files on a new line instead
of just after the progress percentage. Closes: #552517
  * Document in dpkg-source(1) that patches for source format “3.0 (quilt)”
are expected to apply without any fuzz. Closes: #666752
Based on a patch by Luca Capello <luca< at >pca.it>.
  * Remove redundant -Wformat-security from default dpkg-buildflags, which
is already implied by -Werror=format-security. Closes: #664964
Suggested by Peter Eisentraut <petere< at >debian.org>.
  * Document in dpkg-query(1) that commands producing multiple paragraphs
will preserve the order of the packages specified on the argument list.
  * Change start-stop-daemon --exec on GNU/Hurd, FreeBSD, NetBSD, OpenBSD
and Solaris to check for executables matching device and inode numbers
    instead of filenames.
  * Change start-stop-daemon --name on GNU/Hurd to check the process' argv[1]
in addition to argv[0], to handle both binaries and interpreted scripts.
Reported by Mats Erik Andersson <mats.andersson< at >gisladisker.se>.
  * Handle deb format versions as major.minor integers instead of strings or
floats, the latter being susceptible to parsing errors depending on the
current locale (although this was only affecting the old deb format).
  * Ignore the minor format version number for deb-split format, unifying
the behaviour with the deb format.
  * Add support for an abitable containing arch attribute overrides.
  * Add x32 support to abitable, ostable and triplettable. Closes: #667037
  * Fix start-stop-daemon to work with relative --exec arguments and --chdir.
    Closes: #669047
  * Ignore request to rename a file owned by the diverting package on
    «dpkg-divert --add --rename». Closes: #588077
  * Clarify dpkg-gensymbols(1) by way of examples that architecture wildcards
are supported in symbols files. Closes: #670048
  * Fix memory leak due to Dpkg::Control objects not being garbage-collected.
Thanks to Ben Harris <bjh21< at >cam.ac.uk>. Closes: #669012
  * Compute the md5sum hash on unpack for empty files too, so that these
can be checked correctly for matching content when installing multiple
    package instances.
  * Generate md5sums files automatically at unpack time if missing from the
    binary package. Closes: #155676, #155799
  * Add missing list and md5sums database file checks to «dpkg --audit».

Hi,

I'll be uploading 1.16.3 to unstable in two days. I've some pending
changes locally which I'll try to push tomorrow or so.

After that, targetting a quick 1.16.4. I'll be doing another round of
refactoring and bug squashing, and a strings cleanup for which I've a
local branch, but which I might run through native speakers and
translators first so that it does not incur too much work for the
latter in case some need to be adjusted first.

regards,
guillem

Hey all,

I tried the debian-user list first with no luck so I'm checking with the experts.
This seems like some kind of bug in dpkg.

So this works fine on 64-bit squeeze:

But not on 64-bit wheezy:

Notice the dependency failure. But the depend is actually satisfied in wheezy:

Is this a multi-arch issue? I've tried setting up multi-arch:

But I get the same result.

Any ideas, anyone?

Thanks,

Hi,

A small set of packages would benefit from explicit arch qualifiers in *-Depends.
Indeed, a cross-compiler, for instance, is meant to run on a certain (build) architecture
and use libs from the foreign (host) architecture.
This isn't actually possible in Debian, since the MultiArch spec only allows the “:any” qualifier,
and dpkg actually reject anything different from “any”.

So, I've played a bit with dpkg and apt.
It turns out dpkg handles cross-arch dependencies perfectly, it only rejects anything else than “any”.
Disabling this test does the trick.

Apt uses implicit “Provides” to satisfy “:any” dependencies and treats the arch qualifier
as part of the package name. One obvious solution would be to add an implicit “Provides”
to each package to satisfy “$package:$arch”. But considering the enormous number of implicit provides
this would add (at least one per “M-A: same” package), I think it's a very bad idea.
Another solution would be to add effective cross-arch dependencies.
It turns out to be fairly easy, but a proper patch would need a bit more work,
and this might have a number of subtle implications I haven't thought of.

Here are patches for dpkg and apt. They need reviewing, and the apt one could probably be cleaned up
a bit. Anyway, there are a few questions left:

1. When parsing the *-Depends fields, should dpkg check whether the arch is known?
I think it doesn't matter, as a package with a dependency qualified with an unknown arch
     would be uninstallable anyway.
2. Should a package be able to depend on a package regardless of its M-A field?
I think it only makes sense for a package to depend on a “M-A: same” or “M-A: allowed” package,
“M-A: foreign” packages providing arch-independent interfaces, and M-A unaware packages
     probably being unwanted.
On the other hand, explicitly disallowing other packages would probably be unnecessary work.
3. Have I overlooked something?

Thibaut.

Trying to understand debootstrap/dpkg failure case

I'm attempting to use deboostrap to install a minimal armhf system on new
hardware, but the second-stage portion of debootstrap is failing due to
dpkg errors. When I look in the 'debootstrap.log' file I see the following
errors:

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
dpkg: regarding .../apt_0.8.15.10_armhf.deb containing apt, pre-dependency
problem:
apt pre-depends on libstdc++6 (>= 4.6)
libstdc++6 is unpacked, but has never been configured.
dpkg: error processing /var/cache/apt/archives/apt_0.8.15.10_armhf.deb
(--unpack):
pre-dependency problem - not installing apt
Errors were encountered while processing:
/var/cache/apt/archives/apt_0.8.15.10_armhf.deb
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If I understand what the error is telling me, the 'libstdc++6' package
needs to be configured prior to the 'apt' package being configured.
However, for some reason debootstrap or dpkg is not making sure this is
occurring. This is the only package that causes this error and I can't
figure out what broke with regards to the dependency between these two
packages. If run the second-stage debootstrap a second time, it then
completes without error, although the apt package needs to be manually
installed after.

Can anyone provide insight into what I should be looking at to fix this
problem?

BTW, the packages I'm using have all been recompiled by myself to target
specific ARM hardware. It's possible that in building the packages I broke
something, but I honestly don't recall making any changes that would impact
the dependency between packages. I've tried to be very careful to try to
not make any changes to the packages other than compiling new binaries to
work on the specific CPU I'm using.

Any help in understanding what I might have done to cause this error would
be greatly appreciated.
