concepts for smartcards and readers, and to bring the loot to debconf in
Managua.

I started a table on

  https://wiki.debian.org/Smartcards/OpenPGP/Buying

of who want's what. You can find links to the prices on that page
The smart cards are EUR15-20 and the readers are EUR20 -> 60. I have a
couple SCR-335 (EUR35) that I have no complaints about. Other
possibilities include the GPF crypto stick in place of card+reader.

<xamanu> h01ger, bubulle: There are already some dates on the website:
http://debconf12.debconf.org/dates.xhtml it says (= the local team has
proposed) 9th of July. Is this fine for you or should be changed?

The proposed venue is the Centro Cultural de España en Nicaragua (CCEN), which
IMHO is a very nice place for a C&W party for a group of geeks like us :)
For some photos see
http://layer-acht.org/fotos/660_Nicaragua_2012/20120504_012_Sm.jpg.214.html

_until_

http://layer-acht.org/fotos/660_Nicaragua_2012/20120504_017_Sm.jpg.219.html

Not shown on the fotos is a another rather big room we can also use, 200
chairs and audio(+video) equipment. The only downside is that its 3km away
from UCA, so we need to organize some busses, which the CCEN has experience
with and offered to help us.

So, next step should probably be to tell the CCEN folks that we want to have
the C&W patry there, on the 9th. Shall we?

cheers,
Holger

This was most helpful for setting up travel plans.

Tipps for traveling through USA with a brailledisplay?

Hi.

This might sound strange at first sight, but I am actually concerned
about me traveling through the USA on my way to Managua carrying a
braille display. When I flew to Bordeaux two years ago I was trapped at
security in Lyon for approx. half an hour because the personell
there believed I was carrying explosive material. This led to them
actually fetching a special security guy who ended up fetching a dog to
assert that my "strangely looking device" was not a bomb.

If french people are already making such a fuzz I am really concerned
about the USA.
My braille display is quite expensive, so giving it up on some boarder is
actually definitely not an option.

Since I have never passed through USA (on purpose) in the past, I am
quite concerned. Does anyone have experience with US airports and
"strange looking devices". Is there perhaps some way I can ensure that
I don't loose my €6.600,- device on my way to Managua due to silly
overcautious security?

Please contact me if you qualify :-)

Going to Nicaragua from Europe: avoid Iberia

Hi,

One of the options for going to Nicaragua is using the extensive network
of Iberia from Europe to Latinoamerica.
After ~6 months of failed negotiations, the pilots from Iberia are planning
to strike from April-July and it is expected to be followed for most of the
pilots. [1]
In the meantime Iberia continues selling tickets and if nothing were happening...
So if you can avoid iberia, try it, specially if you have to be back in Europe
in a given day.

Debconf13 in Vaumarcus, Switzerland bid

Hi there!

This email is a formal bid to organize DebConf13 in Vaumarcus,
Switzerland. You can find all the relevant information on the
appropriate wiki page:

  <http://wiki.debconf.org/wiki/DebConf13/Switzerland/Bid>

Since the presentation at DebConf11 we regularly met to discuss the
feasibility of the project. Not a single person was the only
responsible from the beginning to the end of the process. On the
contrary, we feel we have succeeded quite well in working as a group.

We ended up choosing Vaumarcus, a small village overlooking the
beautiful lake of Neuchâtel, because of its natural position which fully
represents what Switzerland is known for: lakes and mountains. This
will leave attendees plenty of choice for extra activities. The day trip
(although not yet planned) will focus on opportunities to discover these
surrounding environments. The venue will offer all the necessary
comforts, grouped in a confined space. We have already discussed with
the owners, on how to overcome possible problems, especially related to
the number of attendees and the network connectivity.

The backup plans are of two kinds: on one hand Fiesch and Melchtal, two
options similar to Vaumarcus (camp locations with everything nearby).
On the other hand two well-known cities, Geneva and Zurich, for which
presentations seem superfluous.

We are well aware, that Switzerland is known for its high cost of
living. Yet we are confident, that various sponsors will help us
organize DebConf13 at good value for all participants.

On behalf of the team.

Thx, bye,
Gismo / Luca

Debian playing cards now available

I raised this idea on this list whilst at DebConf11 and it took a while
but the Debian playing cards are now available - 200 packs in all.

54 cards (inc. 2 Jokers), each with a photo and name of various Debian
people. The release team, ftp team, ex & current DPL take most of the
picture cards (Ace, King, Jack, Queen). Each card has the Debian swirl
on the back and packs come in a white box, also with the Debian swirl.

Some 56 packs are already on their way to people who requested their
packs at or after DebConf11, another 14 packs are going to FOSDEM and
another 14 to locals in Cambridge.

I'm about to email those who requested a pack but haven't yet paid /
let me know a delivery address.

There is also a limit to how many packs I can get to FOSDEM and I'd
like to have some to sell there, so I'd prefer to post packs to people
directly - you also get the cards earlier too.

If you are attending events where cards like these could be sold on,
let me know. (Even better if someone from the UK is attending so that
you don't have to include postage in the resale cost.)

Per pack: £6.60 - about 75g per pack, so postage costs could get high
for >6 packs.

IBAN / BACS details are available on request, PayPal works fine too -
codehelp< at >debian.org

Postage prices within the UK are:

1 pack- £1.50 P&PTotal: £8.10
2 packs - £2.00 P&PTotal: £15.20
3 packs - £2.00 P&PTotal: £21.80

Europe:

1 pack- £2.50 P&PTotal: £9.50 (GBP)
2 packs - £3.00 P&PTotal: £16.20 (GBP)
3 packs - £3.50 P&PTotal: £23.30 (GBP)

Rest of the world:

1 pack- £3.50 P&PTotal: £10.10 (GBP)
2 packs- £4.00 P&PTotal: £17.20 (GBP)
3 packs - £4.50 P&PTotal: £24.30 (GBP)

If there are other lists where people might be interested in these
cards, feel free to repost the details.

We, a Berlin based group of enthusiasts involved in Free and Open Source
Software projects including, but not limited to Debian, hereby announce
our intention to host the annual Debian developer conference in 2013.

Our candidature as Debconf13 hosting city
-------------------------------------------

As Berlin core organizers we endorse Berlin as Debconf13 hosting city,
which is to be held in 2013. We are convinced that Berlin is able to
host a very successful and interesting conference. As metropolis in the
heart of Europe, home of 20 Debian developers in a country with over 200
Debian developers in total [1], we are convinced this makes Berlin an
attractive candidate city.

Our city is well connected, has excellent hosting venues and is home
base of many important FOSS communities. Please get in touch with us if
you are interested in details of our candidature [2] or have a look at
our preliminary plans [3].

How to help us
---------------

We need your help. If you are interested in Free and Open Software and
you are living in, or close to Berlin, or even if you are just visiting
Berlin right now: please join us. You can contribute even if you are not
using Debian or you are willing to support our candidature actively:

* If you want to contribute - come to one of our meetings. No sign-up
required. We will appreciate your presence. You can help us even if you
have no experience in organizing conferences. We usually meet in "Büro
2.0", Weigandufer 45, 12059 Berlin. Have a look at [4] for upcoming
meetings.

* If you are member of a local FOSS community, please talk to us on how
both our groups can benefit from each other by organizing a Debian
conference together - even if you are not using Debian yourself.

* If you are a Debian contributor or Debian Developer, please join our
local team. We need your support! If you are not living in Berlin, you
do not need to join our meetings, just support our candidature. See
below how to talk to us or add yourself to the list of supporters [3].

* Even if you are not able to attend our meetings, you are still invited
to help us. Please join our IRC channel [9], or subscribe to our mailing
list [2].

About us
-------------

We are a group of enthusiasts of Free and Open Source software. Many of
us are involved in the Debian community and long time Debian
contributors. Some of us are also contributing to Debian Pure Blends
like Debian Edu and other related FOSS projects. Obtain the full list on
[3].

About Debian
-------------------

The Debian Project was founded in 1993 by Ian Murdock to be a truly free
community project. Since then the project has grown to be one of the
largest and most influential open source projects. Thousands of
volunteers from all over the world work together to create and maintain
Debian software. Available in 70 languages, and supporting a huge range
of computer types, Debian calls itself the "universal operating system".
More information is available from the Debian website: http://debian.org/

About DebConf
----------------------

DebConf is the Debian Project's developer conference. In addition to a
full schedule of technical, social, and policy talks, DebConf provides
an opportunity for developers, contributors, and other interested people
to meet in person and work together more closely. It has taken place
annually since 2000 in locations as varied as New York, Finland, and
Mexico. More information is available from the DebConf website:
http://debconf.org/

About Berlin
------------

Berlin is the capital of Germany. With a population of over 4.5 million
citizens in its Metropolitan Region, Berlin is Germany's largest city
and among the greatest cities in the European Union. It is well
connected to all major cities world-wide and provides excellent
opportunities to meet-up and come together. Moreover, it is a popular
tourist destination as well.

Berlin is a world city of science, hosts both the LinuxTag [5] and CCC
congress [6] two widely known meet-ups for the Open Source community,
and held several major Open Source conferences in the past [7][8].

How to reach us
----------------

You can reach us on our mailing list [2]. You can also visit us online

sehr erfolgreiche Konferenz an einem zugleich interessanten Standort
auszurichten.

DebConf11 Events BoF, report!

Hi there!

Please reply to the debian-publicity< at > mailing list [1], it is the
discussion list for anything related to the Events team (R-T and M-F-T
set accordingly), TIA.

[1] <http://lists.debian.org/debian-publicity/>

This is the report of the Events BoF [2][3]. I am sorry for the delay,
but the latest days at DebConf11 were quite intense for me, between the
merchandise handling and the proposal for DebConf13 in Switzerland. And
the week after DebConf11 I took a pause and enjoyed RL :-)

[2] <http://penta.debconf.org/dc11_schedule/events/731.en.html>
[3] <http://lists.debian.org/msgid-search/87zkk1z6fe.fsf%40gismo.pca.it>

First of all, the BoF was divided into two parts: I explained again what
the Events team does and where. These were basically the same
information available on the wiki [4] and there were no big surprise
here, except a HUGE remark about (ab)using the email address [5] for
notifications...

[4] <http://wiki.debian.org/Teams/Events>
[5] <mailto:events< at >debian.org>

Then, I moved to the DebConf11 ToDo list [6], which actually got more
attention and people started to interact.

[6] <http://wiki.debian.org/Teams/Events/DebConf11>

Most of the people agreed about adding minor events (AKA simple talks)
to the web page [7]: Francesca is already working on it and this should
be fixed soon, also deprecating the "some talks" page [8] (IMHO not so
visible).

[7] <http://www.debian.org/events>
[8] <http://www.debian.org/events/talks>

Speaking of talks, we really need a way to search in the event/talk
list, it is impossible that in 2011 we still oblige our users to go
through yearly subpages.

Just before the BoF Annette told me about the GriCal portal [9]: we
should find a way to work together with them to avoid duplication of
event submissions and sharing of the main events. Francesca, this could
be the F/LOSS "schedule/calendar" we were looking for, not forgetting
the French-speaking "Agenda du Libre" [10]...

[9] <http://grical.org/>
[10] <http://www.agendadulibre.org/>

Another agreement was that those pages, especially the ones related to
setup a booth, need a re-factoring: the best thing would probably be to
send a "Call for Help" on the debian-publicity< at > mailing list [1] after
having someway planned how the new pages should be organized. Some work
can be done independently of those pages, like the merchandise stuff,
given that it has its own space on www.d.o [11] (but check #613832
[12]). We should probably move the information on a subpage, which is
also easier to maintain.

[11] <http://www.debian.org/misc/merchandise>
[12] <http://bugs.debian.org/613832>

Before going into details about the booth novelties, let me explain the
two last points.

First, for the mailing list, the idea would be to still use the
already-established debian-events-$SOMETHING [13] mailing list for
coordination, with a "new" mailing list for announcement only (both
minor and major events). This should be a restricted-posting mailing
list (probably Events and Press membership only): its aim is to provide
email notifications whenever a new event is added to the website. A
parallel approach would be to duplicate the announcements on Planet
Debian, but these points must be coordinated with the Publicity team.

[13] $SOMETHING is variable, sometime we have one $LOCALE (-nl), one
$CONTINENT (-eu) and two $SUBCONTINENT (-na and -saff).

Second, the merchandise stuff, something that goes beyond the simple
webpage [11]. Beside its re-organization, we should find a better way
to show what is available *at least* from the Debian Trusted
Organizations [14]. The simplest way would be to have a sort of
"virtual" shop, also useful for booth organization. In an ideal world,
this would be the "complete" stock of all Debian merchandising from
Trusted Organizations, "managed" by the Events team (do not panic,
strong words chosen on purpose). Nothing has been done in this respect
apart from my wishful thinking and discussions with various people,
including the Debian Auditors [15]. Nevertheless, we agreed on using
the events.d.n address [16] for all our tests, as soon as Andreas will
free the DNS entry ;-)

[14] <http://www.debian.org/devel/constitution#item-9>
[15] <http://wiki.debian.org/Teams/Auditor>
[16] <http://events.debian.net/>

Then, I moved to the main topic and also my primary goal for this
DebConf11: the Debian Events Box [17]. Taking the example from the
GNOME project [18], booth organizers will receive a parcel with all the
*minimal* material for the booth, i.e.:

- 1x demo PC, already configured to run BabelBox [19] and other stuff
- 1x 17" LCD
- 1x keyboard/mouse
- 1x Wi-Fi AP with a 4-port hub, already configured
- 2+ power strips with worldwide adapter
- various network/VGA/USB cables
- 2 Kensington-compatible locks
- lockable cash box
- debian-flyers and other print advertising
- T-Shirts/labels for the booth staff

[17] <http://wiki.debian.org/Teams/Events/DebianEventsBox>
[18] <http://live.gnome.org/GnomeEventsBox>
[19] <http://wiki.debian.org/DebianInstaller/BabelBox>

Mostly if not all the people who have already organized a booth agreed
on the box content, especially WRT the demo PC. Including a reaflet
rack as well as a rollup poster holder would be even better, but because
of dimension constraints it would be quite difficult, thus the need for
a second "complementary" box was brought to the attention (anyway needed
for further merchandise).

The point which warmed the discussion was about having "uniformed"
T-Shirts or labels for the booth staff. The intention is to try to
solve a common problem at various events: there is no way to identify
the booth organizers, especially when the booth is crowded and/or
various people not always "officially" listed are helping out.
Different people underlined the major problem with this approach:
categorization. Both parties explained their pros/cons, but no final
decision was taken, anyway and for sure this point will generate even
more discussions in the future,

In any case, something that must be said is that any material in the box
is *not* an obligation: the box is nothing more than a guideline, but
the organizers are free to use or not the material included. I, for
myself, would prefer to have *more* choice and to be obliged to say "no,
thanks" than dreaming of something missing...

We would like to have one box available in Europe for events starting
already in September: the demo PC is the biggest choice, given that it
must support hardware virtualization and having as much disk space as
possible (a full mirror for the specific architecture is welcome).
After having discussed with Axel Beckert about his EeeBox PC (also used
to test the Pelicase PL-1650 capacity) we were quite confident in this
product. This was until we discovered that none of the options
available mounts CPUs with hardware virtualization, i.e. one of the
latest Intel Atom E (the best) or Z line, but none of them with 64-bit
instructions [20]. This is the major showstopper ATM, given our need to
evaluate other options (hint: advice needed!).

[20] <http://ark.intel.com/MySearch.aspx?s=t&VTX=true&FamilyText=Intel%C2%AE%20Atom%E2%84%A2%20Processor>

The Debian Events Box [17] will be the main force behind the creation of
at least a debian-events-box package and even more from the same source,
the Debian Events Package [21]. While the former will contain all the
tools needed to administer the demo PC, the biggest plan is to include
all the event/marketing/merchandise material produced in the past. The
first candidates would be the debian-flyers [22] and the already-used
T-Shirts logos [23].

[21] <http://wiki.debian.org/Teams/Events/DebianEventsPackage>
[22] <http://debian-flyers.alioth.debian.org/>
[23] <http://debian.ch/merchandise>

In the end, I consider both the DebCamp11 and the BoF as successful:
despite not having big results (unfortunately we were quite late to show
a functional Debian Events Box [17]...) we interacted with various
people, thus improving our visibility and grabbing experiences/ideas to
improve our work. The fact that some people were present at both the
Publicity [24] and Events [2] BoFs showed that our choice of being a
subgroup inside the Publicity Team was correct. It was privately
suggested to organize a "publicity" track for the next DebConfs, also
including other side events like the Wiki BoF [25] or the WWW [26] talk.

[24] <http://penta.debconf.org/dc11_schedule/events/725.en.html>
[25] <http://penta.debconf.org/dc11_schedule/events/788.en.html>
[26] <http://penta.debconf.org/dc11_schedule/events/785.en.html>

With such a lot of work ahead of us, especially about restructuring the
event pages and defining a detailed procedure for booth management, let
me state again that anyone interested in such topics should join the
effort. And, once again, please feel free to (ab)use the events< at >d.o
email address [5] for any notification, suggestion or comment :-D

On behalf of the Events team.

Thx, bye,
Gismo / Luca

Gobby vs. Etherpad?

Why is Gobby prefered over Etherpad for the BOFs and talks at Debconf?
Personally I prefer Etherpat (I normally use <URL: http://titanpad.com/ >)
because it only require a functioning browser, and there is no need to
ask participants to install extra software. As far as I can see, the
feature set is compatible, and I fail to notice anything relevant
where Gobby is doing a lot better. The only slight improvement is the
directory browsing, but that to medo not seem to be enough reason to
require extra software to be installed to write text.

Anyone care to explain why they prefer Gobby over Etherpad at Debconf?

Happy hacking,

This release was nearly as smooth as the 1.0 release. However, our
last release critical bug was slightly harder to hunt and we are sorry
to admit that we released with a 3 minute delay (we do not hide
problems), so at 11:03.

The final shipping for the "airport" suite was done at 15:30, because
of an unexpected waiting time at $BORDER combined with $TOLL
(apparently half of Europe is travelling today, including Turkey).

We are awaiting for news from the "train" suite.

Hi,

Just wanted to say that I don't hold a grudge or anything towards the
people who were talking and having fun and keeping others awake last
night at 3AM. But I do hope you understand my needing to drive ~1600km
(that's kilometer, not convertible mark) today requires that I'm at
least somewhat well-rested, and that was being made impossible by the
noise outside my room...

If I wouldn't have had to drive so far today, I might even have joined
you, but hey :-)

No hard feelings, okay?

See you next year, or at fosdem, or maybe even today before we leave!

Yes, Debian can release with a fixed schedule.

After a deep freeze that started at 05:30, debian-bus version 1.0 was
uploaded at 05:58 with no critical bugs. We expect the release to be
shipped in Zagreb at 10:00.

The freeze was completely smooth with about 90% of the RC bugs fixed
in the first minutes. The last RC bug was fixed at 05:55 (the
package name is to be kept private for security reasons).

We plan a second release (so, debian-bus version 2.0) at 11:00, with a
deep freeze starting at 10:30.
