Moving on

<pre>Hello,

I have been FreedroidRPG's project leader for many years. We made a great game that many people enjoyed, and I'm very happy with our achievements as a team. Thank you to everybody who contributed code, bug fixes, ideas and content.

Looking at the past two years, my own contributions have completely stopped, and I feel that I have to move on. Remaining as an authority figure in FreedroidRPG while not doing anything is poisonous to the project and the rest of the team. One has to recognize when it's time to leave - I am two years late but now I realize this.

As a result I will no longer be involved in FreedroidRPG decisions. Matthias Krüger has been our main contributor lately, and I have given him full admin rights on the project so that he can implement whatever changes he feels are necessary to go forward.

Thanks for all those years, and good luck with the next releases.

segfault with current master branch

<pre>Hello all,

I tried posting a bug report, but sourceforge says that the bug tracker for
the freedroid grooup has been disabled. So, I am posting it here instead.

Using the latest git master, I encountered some crashing errors. First, I
encountered a seg-fault right after talking with Tybalt in the citadel in
the beginning of the game. Second, upon restarting the game, I received
the following message in my terminal window:

"""
ben&lt; at &gt;tigger:~/Programs/freedroid/src$ freedroidRPG

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Freedroid has encountered a problem:
In function: get_item_data.
FreedroidRPG package and version number: freedroidrpg 0.14.1.
The motion_class of an item in freedroid.item_archetypes is unknown:
sword_motion

If you encounter this message, please inform the Freedroid developers
about the problem, by either

  sending e-mail to:
    freedroid-discussion AT lists.sourceforge.net
  mention it to someone of the developers on our IRC channel:
    channel: #freedroid on irc.freenode.net
  post on our forum at:
    https://sourceforge.net/apps/phpbb/freedroid
  report a bug on our tracker at:
    https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?group_id=54521&amp;atid=474016

Thanks a lot!

Freedroid will terminate now to draw attention to the problems it could
not resolve. Sorry if that interrupts a major game of yours...
"""

Do note that the last suggestion of reporting the bug to your tracker
appears to no longer be valid.

Great work with the game. I certainly am enjoying the improved gameplay
now that I am working off of the source rather than what is on Ubuntu 12.04.

Cheers!

<pre>Hi everybody,

the freedroid repo has moved from

git://freedroid.git.sourceforge.net/gitroot/freedroid/freedroid

to

git://git.code.sf.net/p/freedroid/code

.

You don't need to reclone, in order to get the new repo, just run

git  remote  set-url  origin  git://git.code.sf.net/p/freedroid/code

or, in case of older versions of git:

git  remote  rm  origin
git  remote  add  origin  git://git.code.sf.net/p/freedroid/code

(
http://sourceforge.net/p/forge/community-docs/Repository%20Upgrade%20FAQ/ )

Those with commit access should have received emails containing their
new push addresses (and should not use the read-only one ;) )

Regards and happy hacking,   Matthias

Concerning long term project goals.

<pre>Hi everyone. I've been browsing through the source code for this project, adding a few Doxygen comments
while I'm at it, and have a few questions/concerns/ideas about the long term goals of the project.

According to the project's mission statement on the official website, the main goal of the project is to "provide
a popular reference game in the open-source world." What exactly is meant by reference in this case?

When I think of a reference, I think of an implementation that can be looked at and possibly built upon.
However, in this case, the code(the parts I've read and understood so far anyhow) is very much tied into itself
and therfore building upon it would be nearly impossible. The game as it stands, does provide a good stylistic
reference, but not a very good codebase reference as any novice programmer already knows how to create
code that is tied into itself and hard to extend or modify. The main issues with the codebase are excessive
use of global variables and void foo(void) style functions(which require a ton of cross-referencing to understand
what they do) as well as an extremely monolithic overall design.

To remedy these issues and better serve the main goal of the project(as I currently understand it), I propose a
major rewrite of the C core of the game. The overall goal that I propose is to separate the project into three
major parts: two executables(game and level editor) and a library(engine). The library would be furthur
separated
into four major sub-modules(graphics, sound, input, and dialog). Game
mechanics and collision detection can go directly into the game
executable(each as a sub-module). Following these goals, not only
will we provide a reference implementation, but also a library that can be used to create other games(that
don't have to be direct clones).

I am willing to do the major rewrite on my own if necessary, and infact will do so if the main developers of this
project are uninterested in my ideas(I will fork the project in that case). However, I am posting here to get
some feedback from the developers of this project, and if you are interested to develop some coding standards
for the new code. First, since many new files will be created, I'll need to know who currently owns the copy-
right for this project to add it to the top of each file in the license declaration if I'm not forced to fork. Next,
here follow my suggestions for coding standards...I'm fairly flexible for some of these so they are open for
furthur evaluation/suggestion/debate:

Each file should have exactly one item with external linkage when possible. Possible exceptions are functions
that would always be used together, ex: init_foo(), foo(), and cleanup_foo() could be in the same file.

Functions should have parameters and return values unless they do the same thing every time regardless of
state, do not change state, and failure is not possible.

Functions(including main()) should have a single point of entry(the function call) and a single point of exit(ONE
return statement). ex:
    int square_root(double input, double *result)
    {
        int error;

        if (input &lt;= 0) {
        error = ERROR;
        } else {
            *result = pow(input, 0.5);
            error = NO_ERROR;
        }

        return error;
    }

Global variables should be avoided if at all possible(although if you're making functions with parameters and
return values, you'll generally have fewer global variables). If global variables are actually required for some
feature, put the global in its own file, declare static, and expose get_global() and set_global() functions for it.

<pre>Hi, Sub: Live Better, Think Better (Buy Property in Bangalore) Self-sufficient, Sustainable and Holistic living , is now within reach. Community living which was invented and nurtured by our ancestors, we would like to bring it back at time when everyone needs it the most. The Project - a self-sufficient, a sustainable community spread in 5 acres with abundant lung space of greenery, landscaped with aromatic &amp; medicinal plants. A meticulously planned project having efficient design of 1, 2 and 3 bedroom apartments, very strategically located on 100 feet Chandapura-Anekal main road and very proximate to Surya City. It is just a 10 minute drive from the Bangalore,Electronic City and well connected to the City via the elevated expressway &amp; also via NICE Corridor. Amenities &amp; facilities – Everyone looks for a healthy and lively environment, we at the Project provide one and all starting from Sports facilities to Shopping centre, Amphitheatre, Aromatic parks, Club House with Library and much more. For the young ones it provides multiple sporting facilities like Badminton, Tennis, Basketball, Cricket, Skating rink, Swimming pool, Rock climbing and much more, for kids a learning environment with play areas, and for the elderly it provides an environment of cooperation and inclusiveness. A “Friends &amp; Family” sit out zone on every floor makes a sheer difference.
The Project has all the facilities you'd want in a living environment. From sports facilities to Shopping Center, Amphitheatre, Club House and much more. Friends &amp; Family Theme – which is offered to a group of 8 families to share &amp; enjoy the family togetherness at sit outs provided on each floor. Construction technology – We would construct buildings using the latest technology, which not only allows us to plan &amp; target the project delivery date but also delivers the project in far lesser time as compared with conventional way with a better finish. This technology ensures and leads to safe concrete structures with stringent quality tolerances. The project team have done extensive research on affordable homes and are poised to deliver such multiple projects without compromising on quality &amp; specifications. Please do revert if you find this worthy of further discussion

can you only re-roll characters in the start only or can this be done at any point in time

<pre>Hi all,
In the town in one or all the terminals there is a way to re-roll the
characters (for e.g. in Lily's shop near the entrance to the town).
Now does the re-rolling take into account whatever pills you have
taken or not ?

For instance right now these are my stats atm :-

Str - 13
Dex - 16
Physique - 20
Cooling - 27

which makes the grand total of 76.

I did some re-rolls but the stats. didn't change.

Can anybody comment on the same ?

This is from the git version. I *think* it's the same in the
FreedroidRPG 0.15.1 version as well.

<pre>Hi all,
I see two repositories shown :-

git://freedroid.git.sourceforge.net/gitroot/freedroid/freedroid

as well as :

svn co https://freedroid.svn.sourceforge.net/svnroot/freedroid freedroid

Now it seems that git is where all the development is happening
according to the shortlog :-

http://freedroid.git.sourceforge.net/git/gitweb.cgi?p=freedroid/freedroid;a=shortlog

whereas the subversion is being used just to make the final releases
or something as the last thing was done about quite a few months ago
:-

http://freedroid.svn.sourceforge.net/viewvc/freedroid?view=revision&amp;revision=5382

Has the move/shift to git been something which has been for a long
time or a recent phenomenon ?

Also does anybody know the approximate size of the git repo. ?

Lastly, are the instructions still valid as shared on

http://freedroid.git.sourceforge.net/git/gitweb.cgi?p=freedroid/freedroid;a=blob;f=INSTALL;h=e625cbf9dc4a5deca1ffec87e8ef399e6ce492e8;hb=3eda182ba5aa01e471a74417f4dda76c7648b91b

Basically the running of autogen.sh , is that still needed ?

Looking forward to info.

Till l8er.

<pre>Hi all,
I'm not able to find any books in Repair equipment at both the sisters
place, neither at the library nor at Sorenson's place. I know they can
fix things cheaply but it's better if our hero can repair his
equipment.

As far as the Novice Arena is concerned, I can see it but not able to
get in, this in 0.15.1 .

Looking forward to know things.

FreeDroid - Nick Nario Hagman reporting in

<pre>Hello FreeDroid people,

I tried getting on the FreeDroid IRC channel but wasn't able to. This is
Nick "Nario" Hagman, that composer guy from 2-3 years ago that contributed
two or three songs to FreeDroid. Arthur Huillet asked me to make a song for
the tutorial stage... but I don't have his email anymore... and I don't
even know if the tutorial stage ever came to being... but I never forgot
about it. The linger was so faint, but it followed me for two years or
longer, and I finally got around to making a song for the tutorial stage.

The song is attached to this email, and is a .ogg file as requested.

I don't know if FreeDroid is even active anymore, or if anyone checks this
email, but I thought I would send this off for old times sake. I'm more
often on Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube, doing my thing on there. I hope
this email reaches someone!

Sincerely,
Nick "Nario" Hagman

<pre>Hi all,
Is it possible to play freedroid without knowing/choosing the
chess/logical part and using just his fistcuffs or/and bullets (like a
typical RPG). I ask because I have a 7 yr. nephew and he's more
interested in banging the tin cans instead of going the other way. I
have not played the game at all hence have no idea if this can be done
or not hence asking.

Looking forward to comments. The game that was played is at the
default difficulty level.

They way I found out about it is several of the e-mails I have are no longer valid...

Sorry for any confusion.

New idea for a mini game

<pre>Hello everyone,

I have a new idea for a freedroid takeover minigame.

Basically it will be like pipwalker, a game where you have to connect a
computer to all of the other computers in the network by turning pipes.
http://pipewalker.sourceforge.net/
The pipes could be replaced with wires or something and the computers with
some crazy components. How the robot could fight back would be by slowly
breaking wires, which would then be unusable, or just by a time limit.

Where Can I file bugs for the FreeDroidRPG?

<pre>Yup, I have taken a short screen cast video that helps demonstrate he
problem and have uploaded to Vimeo for the developers / bug fixers. I tried
sending an email to the email address mentioned in the In Game credits.
But I have never gotten a response, so I was assuming that address isn't
viable any more. Could you guys, point me in the right direction?
       God bless,
            Clem
