external search in ebib?

<pre>Hi ebib list.
I try to develop a way to annotate my articles using doc-view, ebib and
org-mode capture templates. I have little experience in elisp and
shamelessly ask if someone can develop a function (of show the way for
it). The function should run from emacs search in a pre-loaded ebib
database by one bibtex field (file in my case ) and return bibkey (or
other field) of corresponding record. I hope it is not complex thing to
do.
Thanks.
Petro

feature request: searching online databases

<pre>Certain bibliography managers e.g. jabref (which I couldn't get to work)
promise a capability to search through online sources e.g. ACM Digital
Library, Citeseer, Google Scholar, etc. for bibliographic information.

Is there any plan to implement a similar feature in ebib? If not, do you
think it would be worth trying? I know some Emacs Lisp, but nothing
about its network programming aspect.

Thanks,
Mandar.

how to edit the key?

<pre>Hi,

Recently discovered ebib, and it looks great! Since I'm a new user, I'm
still using a mix of ebib and editing the raw bib file. I'm wondering if
there's any way to edit the key itself via ebib. A quick look in the
manual didn't yield anything.

This leads me to the next question. Suppose I change the key (or make
some other edit) directly in the .bib file. Can I get ebib to reload
the data without quitting and restarting?

Thanks,
mandar.

commit 7783f3d3096f315e7a6d7113bddf2a3834e545fa

    Open DOI functionality.

    DOI = digital object identifier.

This commit allows users to browse DOI's directly.

    Add variables 'ebib-standard-doi-field' and
    'ebib-doi-url'. Add function 'ebib-browse-doi'.
Add menu entry and index buffer key map to "i".

Much of the code mirrors 'ebib-browse-url'.

    Improved info quit behavior.

This is the last of three commits to improve ebib help.

The "q" key is now bound to 'Info-exit' and then
'ebib'. This gives more intuitive behavior than
before, but the solution is not ideal and could be
    developed further.

    Dedicated INFOPATH envar setting.

The 'INFOPATH' environmental variable is now explicitly
set in 'ebib-init'. The current implementation is
hardcoded to suit the author, but improving on this
should not present a problem. It should map to the
    location of 'ebib' instead.

    Add user-specified default keywords.

    Add user-specified variable 'ebib-keywords-list'. This
variable is currently set to (list "keyword-1"
    "keyword-2") for test purposes.

The next commit will read this list from a text file
    instead.

See also the TOFIX comments in the code for some minor
    issues to fix.

Hi Joost

As far as I can tell the current 'git' version is
buggy and fails when editing fields, on function
'ebib-edit-field'.

Probably easier if you fix it, than me.

Also, should this kind of traffic go thru the users

searching across multiple real databases

<pre>
Hello Joost and list

This posting relates to searching across multiple
databases. Unless I have misread the
documentation badly (always a possibility), basic
emacs-based searches and advanced searching
(resulting in virtual databases) are only
possible within the one database. Is this
correct?

I would like to work across six BibTeX files.

It so, there are two possible fixes: concatenate
the BibTeX files beforehand. Or offer users a
'super' database, a union of the existing real
databases. Call it super, logical, or virtual, as
you like. In fact, 'logical' has some merits.

Anyway, I hacked a bit of 'ebib.el' to try and get
something happening. The following patch FAILS to
work, but did run. You should get the drift,
anyhow.

My questions are two-fold:

   * is this functionality needed ?
   * is this functionality possible ?

It yes to both, I may go on hacking. Else, I will
give up and simply run 'cat' on my BibTeX files to
produce on single real (physical) database and
leave it at that.

many thanks in advance, Robbie

CAUTION: patch is also hand-edited so may not take

<pre>
Hello Joost, others

I just spent a bit of time trying to get 'ebib' to read
my BibTeX files. You'll see why shortly.

With regard to the following documentation:

  File Search Dirs

  Default value: ~.

List of directories that Ebib searches for
files. Note that searching is not recursive: only the
files listed here are searched, not their
  subdirectories.

I took this to mean BibTeX files and duly set up the
following:

  (setq ebib-file-search-dirs
        "~/path/to/bib/files")
  (setq ebib-preload-bib-files
        (list "1.bib"
              "2.bib"))

This failed and after reading 'ebib.el' I can see why.
For the record, what is needed is this:

  (setq ebib-preload-bib-files
        (list "~/path/to/bib/files/1.bib"
              "~/path/to/bib/files/2.bib"))

Maybe the documentation could emphasis the files
mentioned are files for viewing and not files for
reading.

Many thanks for offering this project. It suits
my needs well and the code looks beautiful.

Robbie

<pre>I just installed ebib and linked it with org-mode. I have it working great
but I can't seem to get the files to open. I also use mendeley or
previously did but might convert over. This is typically how my files are
formatted in my bib (shown below). I get the error in the subject line that
no valid filename found in field 'file'. Is there a way to get ebib to
recognize the file format setup like this because all my files are setup in
this manner

I am new to Ebib, and I am very impressed. I like all the features, but I

when editing the annote or note field.

thanks

<pre>Aloha Joost,

I'm running into a problem with ebib on Emacs 24.1. When I add a new
entry, the key is not produced and an error complains about wrong type
argument (stringp, nil). This same thing happens when I use K to
generate a key with bibtex, so I think this is where the problem might
be.

Any ideas?

All the best,
Tom

<pre>Aloha Joost,

I ran into a problem with ebib having to do with entering an author
whose surname begins with a special LaTeX character. The author's name
is Mehmet \"{O}zdo\u{g}an, and my setup generates this key for the
entry: \oxdogan06:_hypot_approac_realit.

After I enter Mehmet's article, the key appears in the Ebib-index
buffer, but the information isn't shown in the Ebib-entry buffer. In
fact, the index is corrupted at
\oxdogan06:_hypot_approach_realit. Each key from there on points to the
following entry in the file, i.e., the third key points to the fourth
entry, the fourth key to the fifth entry, etc.

This problem seems to show up with this failed search:
ebib-search-key-in-buffer: Search failed:"^\\oxdogan06:_hypot_approac_realit",
which is the result of pressing E with the cursor in the Ebib-index
buffer on the key \oxdogan06:_hypot_approac_realit.

Let me know if you have any questions.

All the best,
Tom

P.S. Thanks again for ebib. I rely on it heavily in my work now and
find it a joy to use.

<pre>Aloha Joost,

This might be a lot of work, but I wonder if it would be possible to
make ebib aware of git? When I edit a bibliography in BibTeX mode,
emacs knows that my bibliography is associated with a git repository and
I can use magit to commit changes to the repository with a few
keystrokes.

I'm finding ebib so useful I rarely work in BibTeX mode, so I'm missing
the handy functionality of magit. Of course, I'm looking for the best
of both worlds!

Thanks for ebib. What a handy tool.

All the best,
Tom

When adding the cross reference field to an incollection entry, the
title of the book ends up in the title field, rather than the booktitle
field. I looked for a way to change this through the customize menu,
but couldn't find it. Is there a way to have the book title cross
referenced correctly?

This is a follow-up on the weird problem I reported earlier with the
mastersthesis type. See the attached message from the Org-mode
list. It looks like the problem was as you thought, an interaction with
other software, in this case org-bibtex. I can confirm that I have
org-bibtex loaded and that the file where the problem occurred had
org-bibtex entries.

Tom

ebib saves a type = {mastersthesis} field for &lt; at &gt;mastersthesis. This
confuses the bibtex and biblatex styles I use, which insert
"mastersthesis" verbatim if the type field is present. Am I doing
something wrong?

Hello.,

new user looking to tryout ebib. I found that git repository doesn't

my intention to install ebib through el-get[1]. el-get automates the
installation and make info from git repository.

<pre>Aloha all,

I'm learning to use ebib productively and enjoying it. Thanks to Joost
for a wonderful piece of software.

I use ebib in Org-mode sometimes where the citation commands I use are
Org-mode links, rather than LaTeX commands. I'm wondering if it is
possible to turn off the automatic insertion of \ with
ebib-insert-bibtex-key? It would be great to be able to configure ebib
so it would enter something like [[cite:bibtex-key][123]], instead of
\cite[123]{bibtex-key}.

All the best,
Tom
