SCOPE

The sharing and re-use of research information is becoming an increasingly important aspect of scientific activity. Text publications are ñ and will be at least for the near future ñ the predominant way of publishing research output and challenges still exist for their optimal recording and dissemination. Meanwhile, scientific communities recognise the immense significance of storing, discovering, processing, preserving and re-using data sets as well as other types of research objects like workflows and software. Furthermore, Public Sector Information, potentially valuable for research purposes, is provided openly by governments although not always in forms that enable re-use.

Metadata is a critical factor in this area, actually providing the means to promote black-box digital files to discoverable and re-usable objects. A key requirement is capturing and disseminating rich descriptions of research output in standard, semantically clear forms, including contextual and provenance information, such as relationships of publications and data sets with people, organisations, funding information, facilities and equipment. This metadata needs to be some extent independent of a particular research domain, to foster collaboration and re-use of data sets across disciplines and vertical communities, while still allowing the recording and utilisation of domain-specific information. A range of open issues have to be addressed towards these goals.

The aim of this Special Track is to serve as a forum for experts to present recent results and experiences, establish liaisons with other groups and reflect on the state-of-the-art of metadata and semantic aspectsof open repositories, research information systems and data infrastructures.

<title>Epson Expression 10000XL discontinued as of Friday March 1, 2013</title>
    <link>http://comments.gmane.org/gmane.education.web4lib/20712</link>
<description>&lt;pre&gt;I thought it might be helpful for those of you who are involved in
digitization activities to know that the Epson Expression 10000XL has been
discontinued as of Friday, March 1, 2013.

Here is one site with the information,
https://m.cdwg.com/shop/products/Epson-Expression-10000XL-Color-Flatbed-Scanner-Graphic-Arts-Model/661175,
and you will also see "discontinued" on the Epson website.

This has large implications because it is the standard piece of hardware
for the library, archive, and museum community who depend on its
dependability and flexibility.

Does anyone know of a more recent model of scanner that is comparable?

I still think it is a good purchase even now but wonder for how long that
will be true.

What thoughts do you all have about this?

    <title>Innovative Content Pro - looking for feedback / experiences</title>
    <link>http://comments.gmane.org/gmane.education.web4lib/20701</link>
    <description>&lt;pre&gt;Hi all,

My library is looking into adopting Innovative's Content Pro IRX to manage
digital collections for a large corporate organization. I was wondering if
anyone had any experiences (negative or positive) working with this
software and might be willing to share. We're mainly considering it
because we already use Innovative's Millennium ILS software and it is easy
for us to stay with the same vendor, and the IRX version looks like it will
allow us to create separate content areas and sets of credentials for
different departments within our organization.

Any feedback would be appreciated.

Cheers,
Schuyler

NFAIS Webinar: The Global Open Knowledgebase (GOKb) – Building a Community-Managed Knowledgebase

On Friday, May 31, 2013 NFAIS will hold a 90-minute webinar from 11:00am - 12:30pm EDST to take a look at the Global Open Knowledgebase (GOKb) – a new open, community-based international data repository that will provide libraries with information about electronic resources. It will include data such as publication information, related organizations, and model licenses, and will be accessible across all US and UK academic libraries. The initiative was funded in June 2012 by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and is being led by the Kuali OLE partner libraries and JISC. The expectation is that a beta version will be launched this summer. The ultimate goal of the effort is to enhance the supply chain lifecycle for libraries in managing electronic resources while mobilizing community effort to add quality, timeliness and economies to the library management environment.

Our speakers will be Kristin Antelman, Associate Director for the Digital Library, North Carolina State University, Raleigh and Liam Earney, Project Director, Knowledgebase Plus, JISC Collections. Some of the issues that they will discuss are:

· The industry problems that led to the development of GOKb such as issues of data quality and inefficient data management across the supply chain
· The approach taken to develop the repository, including principles of open data, collaboration, enhanced data, and use of standards and best practices.
· How GOKb data will be used in current national and local-level services, such as Knowledge Base Plus in the UK and Kuali OLE
· How it could be of use to entities of all types across the supply chain, including publishers and vendors
· The approach to supporting community management of GOKb going forward

In addition, a demonstration of a beta version will be provided.

If you or your staff want to learn more about this new global initiative and what role publishers may play, register for the NFAIS webinar today. NFAIS members pay $105, Sister Society members pay $115, and non-members pay $125. An unlimited number of staff from NFAIS member organizations can participate for a group fee of $255. The group fee for an unlimited number of staff from any Sister Society is $275, and from a non-member organization is $295. The registration form can be accessed at: [http://nfais.org/event?eventID=523] http://nfais.org/event?eventID=523.

The 6-course sequence with Library Juice Academy starts next month.

In this 6-course certificate program, you will learn the fundamentals of user experience (UX) and how to apply user-centered strategies to library websites and beyond. The program begins by teaching you the key concepts of UX design and how to employ them in your website projects. Next, you will learn the ins and outs of information architecture: how to structure and organize your content so that it is both discoverable and navigable in the easiest way possible. The next two courses will give you the tools to continually get feedback on your website through usability testing and other research methods. You will then learn how to better write for the web so that once your users discover your content, they can both understand it and act on it. Finally, you will learn how you can create a web
site content strategy, so that from that point forward all your content will be useful, usable, and findable. All together, these courses cover a breadth of topics that will equip you with !
the skills necessary to create, manage, and sustain library websites that provide an excellent user experience.
