<pre>A library school student I work with has an assignment to interview a librarian who uses a CMS. There's a short deadline (midnight May 26), but it's also a short list of questions (to answer in person, by phone or e-mail). If you can help, please e-mail: Mollie Armour
marmour-zyaWFcxYZ9U&lt; at &gt;public.gmane.org

Thank you!

Some bullet points for the interview:
*How and where did they hear about CMS?
*What were your motivations to adopt CMS for its use (library website or any other purpose)
*What were your decision making criteria? and What is the name of CMS used?
*What are the important benefits or advantages of a particular CMS over an old system or another CMS system they've used in the past?
*How was the learning curve?

why does a browser not know the results of a DNS lookup?

<pre>Hi,

If a person types an incorrect domain name in an address bar, the browser will prompt him or her to check the network connection. (It also prompts him or her to check the domain name.) For example, Mozilla Firefox will respond with

*****************************************

Check the address for typing errors such as
   ww.example.com instead of
   www.example.com

If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer's network
   connection.

If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure
that Firefox is permitted to access the Web.

*****************************************

Why does the browser not know that the network connection is fine, and simply prompt the person to re-examine the domain name? Does DNS not communicate with HTTP?

Any help with satisfying my curiosity would be much appreciated.

Regards
John

John

<pre>Hi,

We are in the process of making very old hand written documents available on the Web. The handwritten information has been typed up and converted to HTML, but we are hoping to provide links from this to the originals which will be in PDF format.

The originals are on microfilm. Each page is about six times as wide as it is high. We have scanned a sample, but find that when zooming in, it quickly becomes impossible to read the handwriting. Vertical lines which are on the microfilm become more of a problem when enlarging the image. Also, because of the document's dimensions, much of the document disappears off screen when zooming in, and a large scrollbar appears at the bottom of the screen.

A cleaner image and an ability to pan and zoom with the mouse would be ideal. What is the best way of achieving this? Any help would be much appreciated.

Regards
John

<pre>Dear all,

I am looking for references about information monitoring as part of a special library service. I found tools and books about sources of information, but nothing about the methodology for building a monitoring service thanks to which I could improve my practice. Could you share your resources with me please ?

I am french speaking and I am wonder if "information monitoring" and "documentary monitoring" are good translations ??

input sought re: web analytics products practices in libraries

<pre>Greetings, all!

Tabatha Farney (University of Colorado Colorado Springs) and I are putting
the finishing touches on our LITA Guide about web analytics, and we'd like
to include two appendices: 1. a list of suggested free tools for analytics
use in libraries; and 2. a list of commonly used library products (CMSs,
catalogs, calendaring tools) to which one can quickly and easily add
third-party analytics capabilities. We'd like to get broad feedback on both
of these items. Please respond directly to me and Tabatha (who's cc'ed),
and if there's interest, I'll share with the list.

1. So, first question: *What products would you include in an appendix that
lists free analytics tools for libraries? *These are the products that we
are considering, and several of them are mentioned throughout the course of
the manuscript:

Google Analytics
Yahoo! Analytics
Piwik
Crazy Egg
AWStats
Percent Mobile
ClickTale
FaceBook Insights
Bango
StatCounter
Webalizer
FireStats
FeedBurner

What's missing from this list? Are there any other tools out there that
you'd recommend for use in library environments? They can be very specific
(i.e., FaceBook Insights).

2. Second question: *To what library products have you added third-party
(i.e., Google Analytics) analytics capabilities, and how, in a paragraph or
less, did you add them?* This is what we have/know how to include:

CMSs: Drupal, WordPress, Omeka, LibGuides
Catalogs: III
Other: Evanced

If you've integrated Google Analytics (or another third-party tool) into
SirsiDynix products or discovery tools, we'd be very interested in hearing
from you.

For this second appendix, we are NOT looking for a step-by-step install
process (which would be difficult to make accurate for a large audience and
also date rapidly), just a high-level description of the best way to
integrate tracking code or install the tool. Example for Drupal: "Create a
Google Analytics account (if you don't already have one). Then, install the
Drupal Google Analytics module (LINK) on your Drupal site(s). Finally,
configure the module by adding your Google Analytics account number. The
module will then insert the tracking code for you in your web pages."

<pre>This question has undoubtedly come up on Web4Lib before, but I can't find
anything in the archives to show it has been raised recently. At the risk
of redundancy:

What web browser brands and versions does your library make a formal
commitment to support for your public web site? I'm specifically wondering
what your cut-offs are for Google Chrome, Internet Explorer, Firefox, and
Safari. If you have a couple minutes, please fill out this quick survey:

When2Work starter template/tutorial?

<pre>Please excuse the cross-posting - I'm trying to gather some wisdom here and am casting my net wide.

We're looking to get started with When2Work for our desk scheduling. There are so many options available - we'd like to know how other libraries are using this product. In particular, if you have multiple desks to schedule, how did you set it up initially. Groups? Types of employee?

If anyone has a simple "this is how we set it up" document or tutorial, or a template of how you set your system up, we'd very much appreciate a peek. Best practices, hints and tips, cautionary tales! All are useful.

I figure this product has been around a while - I hate to spend a lot of time reinventing the wheel, as most libraries have similar scheduling challenges!

Any help you can give would be most appreciated. Feel free to reply to me off-list (email below) if you prefer.

Thanks!

Deadline extension for SWIB11 (Semantic Web in Libraries) to 31.5.2012

<pre>Due to several requests the submission deadline to the forth conference
"Semantic Web in Libraries" (SWIB), 26.-28.11.2012 in Cologne, has been
extended to May 31, 2012. The call for proposals here once again:

Call for Participation: SWIB12 "Semantic Web in Bibliotheken"
(Semantic Web in Libraries) Conference, 26.11. - 28.11.2012, Cologne

To an ever increasing extent Linked Open Data (LOD) is developing into a
mainstream topic, with more and more organisations announcing LOD
projects and services. Furthermore and during the last two years Linked
Open Data has received a lot more attention from the library world.
Examples ranging from the Library of Congress' initiative "A
Bibliographic Framework for the Digital Age", the Conference of European
National Librarians and their vote to support the open licensing of
their data to groups like LODLAM, IFLA'S Semantic Web Special Interest
Group, to library system vendors and providers discussing and
experimenting with Linked Data technology clearly reflect that - LOD
has gained a lot of momentum in library land.

The question is how to ensure that LOD won't be a temporary hype but
that it will take hold in future infrastructures. SWIB12 will focus on
the adaption of Semantic Web approaches in applications for libraries
and science. In the last years lots of effort has been put into
generating LOD datasets from legacy systems and into promoting the LOD
approach towards a global and open information space. Upcoming
challenges will be the strategic and technical alignment of catalogues
and legacy systems in libraries, and authoring environments for
scholarly communication with a data and service infrastructure based on
Semantic Web principles.

This year's SWIB conference (Semantic Web in Bibliotheken) will be held
in Cologne from 26-28 November 2012. As in the years before, SWIB12 will
be organized by the North Rhine-Westphalian Library Service Center (hbz)
and the ZBW - German National Library of Economics / Leibniz
Information Centre for Economics. The conference language is English.

We appreciate proposals (research reports, projects, work in progress,
...) on the following or related topics:

* Integration of Linked Data into productive library environments

* Technologies for providing, accessing and integrating Linked Data in a
non-disruptive and lightweighted way, e.g. by means of APIs or
WebServices

* Enhancing authoring environments like Content Management Systems,
blogs or wikis with Semantic Web facilities, e.g. by accessing Linked
Open Datasets or by including semantic markup

* Enhancing legacy data through integration of data from the LOD cloud
or through FRBRizing, deduplication, crowdsourcing etc.

* Applications using authority data maintained by libraries and possibly
enriched by the community

* Development of commercial or non-commercial library systems aligning
their data models and policies with the web of data

* Licensing strategies and business models for supporting the reuse of
Linked Open Data

Do you have an interesting service, research topic or project that you
would like to present at the conference? We are looking forward to
receiving your suggestions and proposals for contributions (with an
abstract of 1000-1500 characters) by May 31, 2012.

Please submit your abstract using our website at
http://swib.org/swib12/submission. We'll try to give feedback till June
22.

Alarming Research Habits - Looking at how Students Cite

------------------------------------------------------------------

Citations--the glue that keeps research papers honest, yet an aspect

of the research process many students don't understand, and find

tedious or bothersome.

* In a College and Research Libraries analysis, 71% of

students had only 1-5 citations listed in their papers

* In EasyBib survey of 2600 students, 40% of respondents

said they sometimes or rarely add a citation when they

        paraphrase another person's ideas

* In the same survey, more than half (54%) said they would

be less likely to cite sources altogether if they did not

have access to bibliographic management tools

How are students interpreting and synthesizing information?

How many sources are they using in their papers? When are they

citing, and how do they assemble their sources? We'll answer and

discuss all these questions and more, while showing how EasyBib

and OCLC can help with information literacy tools and features that

cultivate better research skills.
