    <title>Question regarding plate count</title>
    <link>http://comments.gmane.org/gmane.education.libraries.autocat/17969</link>
    <description>Hello there,
I am a rare materials cataloger and I generally follow DCRMB
rules and guidelines, but I can't seem to find any rules on how to count
leaves
of plates when a single folded illustration comprises more than one
separate
leaf of plates adhered to each other edge to edge. Any suggestions?
Any specific/preferred way to describe this layout in a note?

Thanks

    <title>Help cataloging Scholastic Book Guides</title>
    <link>http://comments.gmane.org/gmane.education.libraries.autocat/17968</link>
    <description>Catalogers:

I have about 100 "Book Guides" from Scholastic, most published in the 1990s,
all requiring new OCLC input. These have caused a stir among our catalogers,
with different opinions for the main entry, description, notes, subject
headings, added entries, and series. The Book Guides have from 12-16 pages,
are in the same format and style, and are similar except for the title of
the book and specific exercises. The Book Guides do not include the text of
the story.

I have posted a typical Book Guide--the front cover, title page, contents
page, and back cover--on a web page. Please view:
http://library.ucr.edu/?view=departments/cataloging/tempexample.html

Two OCLC records have been input showing differences of opinion for separate
titles. Please see OCLC record numbers #264799260 and #264799082.

Whatever assistance you can provide would be appreciated. You may wish to
contact me directly if you have specific questions or a solution to my
cataloging problem. My email address is: rivwe-3vSkeFsW7jA&lt; at &gt;public.gmane.org

<description>Is there a LCSH for turning one's life around, going straight, making a new
start, what in Christian circles is called amendment of life? The book I
have in hand is a Christian novel, so if there were such a heading as
"Amendment of life" I would use it (I am assigning "Repentance"). But it
would be nice to know if there were a heading that applied to both secular
and Christian works.

The book I have is about an ex-convict who is determined to go legit, but
the women in his life want him to return to his former life of crime, which
paid a lot more. I have assigned "Ex-convicts"; if there were such a
heading as "Ex-criminals," I would assign that too.

Thank You.

As I suspected, you need tob e specific in what you ask for, and also have
to check books and/or run reports. As the amount we could order shelf-ready
is limited, due to our predecessors' rewriting of LCC, it would be difficult
for order clerks to select this subset, and I very much doubt we would save
enough money to be worth the extra bother. But we now have some solid
comment to use in our arguments, and this will be a big help.

Does anyone have any figures on the number of shelf-ready books that have to
be reclassified on arrival? I have a vague memory that someone said once
thay had up to 20%.

As I've said so often, thank goodness for AUTOCAT!

    <link>http://comments.gmane.org/gmane.education.libraries.autocat/17954</link>
<description>Typo of the Day for Librarians
Condiser* (for Consider, etc.)

Consider this: The typo Condiser* is found nine times in the OhioLINK database, making it a typo of "moderate probability" on the Ballard list. There seems to be no good explanation for this since both the S and the D are on the same side of the keyboard; in fact, they're cozying right up to each other. (Considering that fact, though, perhaps that is the explanation.) In any case, sometimes these things just happen. It would be most considerate of you not to poke fun at this mix-up, but simply to switch the two letters around. Thanking you in advance for your consideration...

    <description>Folks,
I am cataloging a book published in Lima in 1951 whose 245 field reads:
Peruvian Creole cookery / &amp;#450;c by N&amp;#771;a Conce ; drawings by Chama.
There is an LCCN record for this in OCLC, and the record gives the 100
field as Conce with a first indicator of 1. the OCLC no. is 3340906, and
the LCCN is 52023924. The prefaces (the book is parallel English/Spanish)
are signed ~Na Conce.
After checking on the web and with local faculty, I have not been able to
find out why the ~Na was dropped from the name in the LC record. So I am
curious about how to establish the heading so that it might be findable.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,

Minesota, etc. (for Minnesota)

Senate contenders Al Franken and Norm Coleman have been mining for missed and miscounted votes ever since Election Day, each one hoping to ultimately tip the scales in his favor. Coleman campaign attorney Fritz Knaak has called for a "truce" between the two camps, citing an "obscene number of ballots" being challenged in "the recount version of mutually assured destruction," according to the website MinnPost.com. Minesota is the clear winner in the Minnesota typos race, with 16 hits in OhioLINK. (Minnsota and Minnnesota are trailing with one and four respectively). Both candidates appear to have high self-esteem, but perhaps only Franken is smiling at himself in the mirror each morning, repeating: "I'm good enough, I'm smart enough, and doggone it, people like me!"

<description>Seeing the question about shelf-ready books reminded me of a question I've been meaning to ask: are there any libraries out there that get shelf-ready books and accept the records created by the vendor as the permanent record? In other words, do you consider the quality of the records that come with your shelf-ready record good enough not to enhance or upgrade? If not, why? And how do you deal with them? If you upgrade them, do you use staff to do so or some service? If you accept them (although there might be something you don't like about them), why? Or are you generally satisfied?

I am just generally interested in the kind of issues that come up at libraries who get shelf-ready books whatever the vendor.

Which one is true? Is it a case where the publisher has changed the title

transferred the old volumes into digital print. Does it apply for all the
volumes and if not, for which volumes? My repeated query to the publisher
yielded no reply.

    <title>2009 Cataloging Workshop</title>
    <link>http://comments.gmane.org/gmane.education.libraries.autocat/17911</link>
<description>MCLINC is considering hosting the following 4-day Marc of Quality cataloging workshop in 2009. The course would be held in King of Prussia, PA. We are surveying catalogers in the PA/NJ area to determine interest levels. Estimated cost for the course will depend on the number of attendees. If at least 15 people attend, the price will drop to $450 per person, which does not include any travel or lodging. No dates have been set. If you are interested please reply to me with times of the year that work best for you. This does not commit you to registering; it only helps us assess whether and when to schedule the course.

AACR &amp; MARC CATALOGING WORKSHOPS

Series B: Intermediate
BOOK BLITZ I (4 Days)

As it has been said before, "good cataloging doesn't just happen". This workshop gets right down to the nitty-gritty details about how to make MARC records that will work well in each and every truly MARC-based library automation system out there.

Whether you are copy cataloging or making original records, this workshop will teach you the essential cataloging rules and MARC standards that you need to know, and how they fit together. Not only will you learn how to find your way around AACR2R, LCRI and MARC21, but you will also learn these 'Core Cataloging Skills':

a.. How to describe a book in enough detail for your user's needs
b.. How to assign useful search terms, such as authors, illustrators, etc. (not subject headings)
c.. How to choose the correct MARC coding for a book record
d.. How to decide whether or not copied records truly match your items
e.. How to upgrade CIP records to provide missing data or edit changes
f.. How to clone 'different edition' or 'near match' records
g.. What 'bad' cataloging looks like, and how to correct it.
(P.S. we spend more than 3 hours on dates alone)

N.B. This is a beginner's workshop on bibliographic description, providing access points, and copy cataloging; this workshop covers books only. See other workshop descriptions below for coverage of subject headings and classification; and see Series C: Advanced for advanced 'Book Blitz' workshops and for workshops on the cataloging of non-print materials.

<description>Typo of the Day for Librarians
Shoppp*, Shoping, Shoper* (for Shop, etc.)

"Shop till you drop" is the rallying cry of many Americans, especially
on the day after Thanksgiving, also known as "Black Friday," when
retailers hope their customers will put them "in the black." (In fact,
the phrase got its start in Philadelphia and was originally a reference
to the heavy traffic on that day.) Shoppp* gets three hits in OhioLINK
and Shoping and Shoper* get two apiece. Our picture shows a woman from
the "black bourgeoisie" inquiring of a shopkeeper: "Have you any
flesh-coloured silk stockings, young man?" Wikimedia points out that the
"caricature is not really racist in itself—and could even be
considered to be subtly anti-racist in pointing out the relative meaning
of the term 'flesh-colored'—but much of the humor which white
Americans of 1829 would have perceived in it would have arisen from the
racist preconceptions which they held." Today is Black Friday at TotDfL.
Three typos for the price of one.

<description>Typo of the Day for Librarians
Recipie, Recipies (for Recipe, Recipes)

Next to the bird, the stuffing, and the cranberry sauce, pumpkin pie is probably the dish most suggestive of Thanksgiving. OhioLINK contains a single serving of Recipie and 16 more of Recipies (two with"sic"), making it a moderate to high probability typo. (Don't truncate this turkey or else you'll pick up too many hits for words like recipient. Remember, 'tis better to give than to receive.) My great-aunt used to bake pies all year round and, before passing on, passed her pumpkin pie "secret" on to my sister, who recreated it for the family this year. Her recipe was actually Mamie Eisenhower's, whose trick was to bake the empty pie shell in the oven while cooking the filling in a double boiler. At some point, you add gelatin and fold in some egg whites to firm it up, then pour it into the shell and chill. Lots of people liked Ike and I'm sure that Ike liked the First Lady's recipe for White House Pumpkin Chiffon Pie. Thanks, Mamie!

    <description>Hello, autocatters,
I'd be interested in any thoughts from members about issues they have
with the provision and quality of bought-in or agency-supplied MARC
records for e-books.
The request is for a former work colleague in the UK who is researching
the topic.
Responses will be forwarded to my colleague as is, unless you request me
to strip off your identifying information, so that you can be properly
credited if he uses it in publications.
I've had permission from the list owners to post this request.
Thanks, and I hope the US members are all recovered from Thanksgiving!

    <description>Hello,

We have been asked to think seriously about shelf-ready books, and Id be
grateful for any input, especially on the subject of error rates. We use
LCC. Are there any other British libraries which use LCC and have books
delivered shelf-ready?

Any comments or advice will be graefully received.

    <link>http://comments.gmane.org/gmane.education.libraries.autocat/17898</link>
    <description>Autocats,

It's been a pleasure, sitting here in my breakfast nook with my laptop,
baking a pumpkin cake and roasting butternut squash, and cooking wild
rice, reading all of the fun messages about Thanksgiving.

I'd like to say that I'm thankful for several things:
-for all of the people who pay way more attention to what's going on with
RDA and report on it when I don't have the time to do it myself.
-for the wonderful folks at Blackwell's and OCLC who helped us make WCP at
Time of Order a reality this year and saved my staff countless hours of
downloading.
-for the Tech Services staff at Loyola who go along with all of my crazy
ideas and thank me profusely when they work!

Have a wonderful holiday everybody. Now I need to go check on my squash.
