comment through July 5, 2012. This Recommended Practice was developed to
provide guidance on the presentation of e-journals--particularly in the
areas of title presentation, accurate use of ISSN, and citation
practices--to publishers and platform providers, as well as to solve some
long-standing concerns of serials librarians. In addition to the
recommendations, the document includes extensive examples of good practices
using screenshots from various publishers' online journals platforms; a
discussion of helpful resources for obtaining title history and ISSN
information; an overview of the International Standard Serial Number (ISSN)
and key points for using it correctly; an explanation of the Digital Object
Identifier (DOIR), the registration agency CrossRef, and tips on using DOIs
for journal title management; and a review of related standards and
recommended practices.

Citations form the basis for much scholarly research. Connecting researchers
with appropriate content is the goal of OpenURL linking and other reference
linking systems. Unless journal websites accurately and uniformly list all
the titles under which content was published, user access to desired content
is considerably diminished. For example, many e-journal publishers and
aggregators now place digitized content originally published under an
earlier title on the website for the current title, using the current ISSN,
thus seriously impeding the researcher's ability to find or identify the
content being sought. The PIE-J project was initiated to address these
issues. The PIE-J Recommended Practice provides a clear and succinct list of
guidelines that publishers can easily implement to facilitate long-term
access to their e-journal content. This constructive advice will aid
publishers with the presentation of born-digital content as well as
supporting the continued digitization of content from journals originally
published only in print."

The PIE-J draft Recommended Practice and an online commenting form are
available from the NISO PIE-J workroom at:
http://www.niso.org/workrooms/piej/.

Music classification question

<pre>I suppose this is a personal philosophy type of question, but I would appreciate some insight.

We have a collection of about 400 music CDs that are currently classified according to ANSCR (http://www.calstatela.edu/library/guides/anscr_class.htm). Or rather, I should say, SOME of them are classified according to ANSCR and a large number are classified incorrectly. All our other collections are classed in LC, and I am considering re-classing our music in LC.

Here's the personal philosophy part: Is it really worth my time to re-class a dying format? The collection is not heavily used; I can think of only one patron who has consistently checked out music (our Learning Commons serves about 10,000 students). It's not just books that are becoming/have become digital. I think music really got there first.

I know there has been past discussion about the reemergence of vinyl in the music world. It is my generation that is bringing that back. But CDs don't really have the same hipster nostalgia that vinyl has (Can it really even be called nostalgia, since my generation grew up listening to cassette tapes and CDs?).

I'd appreciate your thoughts before I start what promises to be a lengthy and potentially fruitless project.

I'm trying to find a vendor for a particular kind of VHS multimedia case that can hold three VHS tapes as well as a 14x20 cm thin booklet. I've tried Demco, Highsmith, Brodart, and the Library Store without success. I have a fix if all else fails (three stand-alone VHS cases plus the booklet inside a plastic bag) but this would be a last resort. Any suggestions on where to look for such a case?

[Typo of the day for librarians] Capenter* (for Carpenter*)

<pre>Writing about Catcher yesterday has put me in mind of another Salinger
story, Raise High the Roofbeam, Carpenters. And calling it Catcher has put
me in mind of a couple of movies I greatly enjoyed, The Good Girl with
Jennifer Anniston (Justine: "Whatcha readin'?" Holden: "Catcher in the
Rye ... I'm named after it." Justine: "What's your name? Catcher?") and
Down with Love, in which Renée Zellweger's love/anti-love interest is the
publishing mogul "Catcher Block." Catcher in the Rye, you've got to admit,
is a very catchy title for a book, and so is Raise High the Roofbeam,
Carpenters. The latter is named after a "fragment" of a poem by the ancient
Greek poet Sappho, after whom lesbianism itself was named! The titular line
goes: "Raise high the roof beam, carpenters. Like Ares comes the
bridegroom, taller far than a tall man..." In the Salinger novella (paired
with another one, Seymour: An Introduction), Seymour Glass, the Manhattan
family's most mysterious and evolved savant, turns out to be a no-show at
his own wedding, where his intended, Murial (a lovely if rather
pedestrian "good girl"), patiently awaits. Capenter* (for carpenter*) was
found ten times in OhioLINK and 81 times in WorldCat. I won't carp on it,
but it'll be a feather in your cap if you can manage to turn up a few of
these in your own catalog today.

(Fragment of the painting Sappho by Charles Mengin, 1877, from Wikimedia
Commons.)

<pre>I know this is a very simple, maybe simplistic answer, something I should
know.

But in terms of authority work and descriptive cataloging, what is a
multipart item, over against a series?

For instance, Gonzalea, Justo L. |t Story of Christianity.
Yes it only covers a certain amount of volumes, but they way it has been
catalogued: 245 14 The story of Christianity. |n Volume 1, |p name of part,
makes me wonder: why not enter it under the specific title and treat the
authority record as an author/title series and use the 490/800 convention?

<pre>Hi again, 'cats,

One of my colleagues discovered that the WorldCat search "kw:Idaho
cp=ru" yields a disturbing number of University of Idaho and related
materials published in Moscow, Idaho with leader Ctry codes indicating
they were published in Russia! We've gotten in touch with OCLC about
fixing these up, but you may want to check your local catalogs for any
of these holdings for accuracy's sake-does anyone do anything with the
Ctry field?

Incidentally, we pronounce it "moss-KOH." I sympathize with my
counterparts at the University of Delaware, in "new-ARK."

<pre> Want a job, a perfect Internet presence, a perfect interview, etc.?

Go about it like an actor! "Competition for work ... is fierce and talent
is not necessarily enough. [People] need all the help they can get with
all aspects of [their chosen] profession."

I just cataloged the perfect guide to getting into and existing in the
workplace-- in any occupation, but librarians take special note.

Doubter? Pick up a copy of "An actor's guide to getting work" and crack
it open at an point: being professional, applying, auditioning,
interviewing, self-promoting, alternative employment, etc.

If it actually works for you, let us know! If not, well, why the heck
not? If you think parts are too specific, do a rewrite that would fit any
profession (yours first, of course) and sell that!

Cheers!

   Hi Mac:

I suppose I do find it frustrating to have to walk on eggs on this list
because we are not supposed to discuss any topics but library matters, so
I apologize for bringing this article to your attention if you find the
matter of defense of privacy irrelevant in the library context or to you
personally.

We can rephrase the quotes as examples of "agreeable" behavioral
expectations extensible by familiarity to any context:

A librarian might be encouraged by example to say to a patron (as you
seem to be saying to me): "You have zero privacy anyway....Get over it."

Regarding circulation records (or bedroom activity, etc.): "If you have
[read or done] something that you don't want anyone to know [about] maybe
you shouldn't be doing it in the first place." Sorry, but that sounds way
too much like HUAC and Orwell to me.

Or: "Why are you librarians being so self-righteous when everybody else
wants to eliminate privacy and just have fun instead of fear?"

Could go the other way, too, you know-- our society (and its librarians)
turning despotic, depending on who runs the show at any given time, or we
could leave the country out of fear of and disgust for what might happen
(as if that would solve anything).

Apathy, ennui, sarcasm, and repeated requests for circulation records
and every other form of "personal" data, maybe with an "or else" attached
to the requests (and what's done with the data, of course).

Well, Mac, we could endlessly list such problems and rank them personally
according to our individual perceptions of their "seriousness", but I
think we both know that all such problems *can* (if history has any
lessons to offer at all) derive from the same source-- the ubiquitous
presence in all societies at all times, past and present, of *individuals*
compelled to seek power and control (from whom nothing else can derive).

Annotate your lists of personal and institutional problems with
"possible" influences causing them and effects resulting from them and
address those, not just the obvious problems. As an example, take the
problem of declining funding for public education and libraries-- when
something goes "wrong", no matter what it might be, there are always going
to be same people around compelled to take advantage (or even cause it).
Heck, even that Alternet article was naive in not suggesting that!

I know how hard it is to "see the forest for the trees", but we should be
teaching how to do it, not wait for clear-cutting (book-burning?) to make
acting simpler.

Cheers!
