Basic information about Network-Lawyers aka netLs

Help promote .... all the good things that are happening with Network-Lawyers. Forward this FAQ to a friend or associate with the suggestion that they subscribe. Or, better yet, submit the canned article about Network-Lawyers at http://network-lawyers.org/article to a newsletter or other law or practice related periodical.

Topic and purpose .... we are legal professionals using the tools of the Internet to exchange information about the use of the Internet and other technology in the practice of law. Our group, its email-based discussion list, its group weblog and "wiki" are launching pads for our common exploration and development of new uses and innovation on the Internet and a place for helping legal professionals who are new to the Internet.

Commercial content .... advertising and marketing of ones own products and services is _off_ topic except for personal pages at the wiki web where you may wax eloquent on your page about your law and law related products and services.

Membership .... is limited to lawyers, law students, faculty, legal assistants, consultants to the profession and other legal professionals with an email based discussion, a collectively edited weblog and wiki web or collaboration platform. The group membership is limited to legal professionals.

Wiki web .... home base for the group where all members may create and edit web pages using an simple full-page editor that works with your browsers. Currently web pages at the wiki may be created by any member or members of the group for any law or law practice related topic or project of interest. This is best place for new members to get acquainted with Network-Lawyers:

http://network-lawyers.org/

Weblog .... where all members are invited to join in as editors, reporters or kibitzers. You may subscribe to receive articles by email or by an XML RSS feed. The weblog is located at:

http://netls.weblog.org/

Email discussion and archives .... email-based discussion list with threaded messages--messages organized by topic--archives at Gmane newsgroups starting in June 2003 at:

http://news.gmane.org/thread.php?group=gmane.culture.law.network-lawyers

and since that might wrap onto two lines and break here is a tinyURL to the same place:

http://tinyurl.com/f536

and the serial, time and date order, message archives, with Yahoo ads to contend with, is at:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/network-lawyers

Email subscriptions .... The web page for Network-Lawyers at the Group.Yahoo.Com address is where you may subscribe, modify how your subscription works, temporarily suspend or unsubscribe from the email discussion group.

File library .... The Yahoo.com web page is where you may up load documents and other files to be shared with the group. Like most discussion groups attachments are not accepted for distribution via email but you may announce the availability of a file in the file library. That is the best way to handle distribution of files.

Moderators .... the co-moderators monitor the postings to the group to see that the message traffic stays on topic.

Moderation of messages .... The first message or two posted that you post to the group will be "moderated" by the moderators. There are seven or eight co-moderators who share this task so that messages should be approved within a few hours during the week days and a bit longer for messages posted on holidays or over a weekend. Within one or two messages after you surface as an active participant in the discussions, the moderators, who have lots of other things to do, will set the message server to automatically forward your messages with out their approval.

Guidelines .... for additional rules and such see the last FAQ which is several years old prepared by Lew Rose who founded the discussion group that has evolved into Network-Lawyers discussion, weblog and wiki web. What Lew had to say then is generally applicable now with the exceptions noted above about the messages being moderated on a much more limited basis. The link to Lew's FAQ and guidelines is:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/network-lawyers/files/guidelines.html

and since that might wrap onto two lines and break here is a tinyURL to the same place:

http://tinyurl.com/jw9l

Help, suggestions and comments ... all of the co-moderators may be reached with one message sent to:

network-lawyers-owner-hHKSG33TihhbjbujkaE4pw< at >public.gmane.org

Help, suggestions and comments ... all of the co-moderators may be reached with one message sent to:

network-lawyers-owner-hHKSG33TihhbjbujkaE4pw< at >public.gmane.org

You may track down the moderators at the Groups.Yahoo.Com site where they are listed in the membership list with little stars after their names.

Hi Jon:

Google Wave is many things combined into one communication/collaboration
tool: email, instant messenger, document sharing and more. You should take
the quick look at this 10 minute compilation of the best segments of an 80
minute demo given late in May to a conference of developers working with
Google (and, then if it all seems worth the time, the whole 80 minute
version as well):

Want Google Wave Now? PyGoWave?s the Next Best Thing

[image: Google Wave Logo]Few products have matched the excitement and the
hype surrounding Google Wave, the search company’s ambitious realtime
communication platform. Some believe Google Wave will replace
email<http://mashable.com/2009/05/28/google-wave/>,
while others think it could
flop<http://mashable.com/2009/07/21/google-wave-world-ready/>.

We already know that beginning September 30th, 100,000 invites to Google
Wave <http://mashable.com/2009/07/21/google-wave-invites/> will be released.
But that’s a full two months away – what if you just can’t wait anymore to
get your hands on Google Wave <http://mashable.com/tag/google-wave>?

One developer couldn’t wait either, so he took the code from the Google Wave
API and transformed it into an open-source version of Google Wave, called
PyGoWave <http://code.google.com/p/pygowave-server/>. Don’t get your hopes
up yet though; this version isn’t quite like the real Google Wave.
------------------------------
An overview of PyGoWave
------------------------------

PyGoWave (< at >PyGoWave <http://twitter.com/PyGoWave>) is essentially a
rudimentary open-source Google Wave server. It doesn’t use the original
Google Wave code (it will be open-source in the near feature), but uses the
Google Wave API to create a test version of the product.

The project actually started late last month, but has been picking up steam
as features are still being implemented. This is very important: *PyGoWave
is not a full-featured version of Google Wave, nor does it have the Google
Wave interface*. It does have access to a slew of Google Wave gadgets and
extensions, though (read *Google Wave Extensions: An Inside
Look<http://mashable.com/2009/06/11/google-wave-extensions/>
* for info on extensions).

As soon as you look at PyGoWave, you can tell it’s not the same interface.
Here’s a screenshot of a wave within PyGoWave:

And here’s a screenshot from the official Google Wave sandbox:

Don’t expect to get the full functionality of Google Wave in PyGoWave (i.e.
it’s really hard to start a Wave conversation), but you do get to try out
some of Wave’s best features, primarily *Wave Gadgets*, as almost all of the
gadgets available in the sandbox version of wave can be accessed in
PyGoWave, including Maps, Wave Rating, and even a Wave Reading app. Even
cooler, you can download them all <http://pygowave.p2k-network.org/gadgets/>
.

In fact, you can download PyGoWave itself and run it on your own server,
since it is an open-source project. It features downloads and even a
wiki<http://code.google.com/p/pygowave-server/w/list>for getting
started and setting up a PyGoWave server.
------------------------------
It’s not wave, but we’re getting closer
------------------------------

Let’s be clear: *PyGoWave is not the open-source version of Google Wave*.
It’s an early approximation of the open-source version, based on the Google
Wave API. It’s still not completely usable and is riddled with bugs, but so
is Google Wave itself.

We are very appreciative of the PyGoWave team for undergoing this difficult
project. People are very excited about Wave, and the more we learn about it,
the better. The team also promise to keep building up the tool’s features
and improving its usability, meaning you can expect it to become cleaner and
more usable as time goes on.

Everyone can access this open-source project, so if you want to try your
hand at PyGoWave, *sign up <http://pygowave.p2k-network.org/> and then post
your username in the comments below*. For the next 30 minutes, I’ll add
commenters to to the *Mashable Test
Wave<http://pygowave.p2k-network.org/waves/gA6FjAaY23/>

Google Wave, Robots and Gagets. Take a look at this short video. Scroll
down a bit, I have highlighted what you need to click in brown.

I will also send you, email 2 of 2, the page on Google's Web site where you
