Dear Eco,

We are so close to making marijuana history we can smell it.

Today, the Colorado Secretary of State informed the Campaign to Regulate
Marijuana Like Alcohol that the campaign is less than 2,500
signatures short of qualifying for the ballot with 15 days left to collect!
The finish line is in sight, and we hope you will *help the campaign cross
it <http://control.mpp.org/site/R?i=lr-cAh_gcVABbRB6PZHotQ>*.

The first phase of the signature drive lasted six months and produced more
than 83,000 valid signatures. This was an amazing accomplishment given the
campaign's limited budget. But there is simply no time left to be frugal.

This second -- and final! -- phase of the signature drive will cost close
to $25,000. *So please donate $10 or more to the Coalition to End Marijuana
Prohibition <http://control.mpp.org/site/R?i=CMleSvDk-WbnNT58nN_Q3g>*, the
MPP-supported issue committee coordinating the signature drive.

With your help, by the end of this month, the Initiative to Regulate
Marijuana Like Alcohol will be on its way to the ballot. And then, in
November, we are confident that Colorado will become the first place in the
entire world where marijuana use is legal for all adults.

*Please make a contribution of $10, $25 or $1,000
today.<http://control.mpp.org/site/R?i=Sow-h_FIxyw0Bav4FSslAw>
*

Thanks, as always, for your support.

Sincerely,

We are interrupting this broadcast with this emergency info... OCCUPY WALL
STREET.

The drug war is part of the prison-industrial-complex. Which is part of the
machine for ruling America.

This is one of the best, most understandable, pages I have seen on wealth
and income distribution in the USA. Feel free to pass it on. It is hard to
find reliable info combined with good understandable charts. The author is a
professor, and the article has references with many links.

Wealth, Income, and Power. By G. William Domhoff.

I used Firefox "Save page as" from the file menu. Then in the "save as
type" form, I picked "Web page, complete". I put them all in one folder.

Windows 7 has built-in zip compression (or use freeware 7-Zip). Right-click
folder. Send to "Compressed (zipped) folder".

Click to unzip (or use freeware 7-Zip).

Texas Tax System Heavily Burdens Poor Residents. August 19, 2011 by
Laura
Bassett. Huffington Post.

Ever since Ronald Reagan and Trickle-Up Economics the USA has favored the
"Divine Right" of the Wealthy Aristocrats.

The poor and the middle class get poorer, and their children go to jail,
mostly because of the drug war <http://corporatism.tripod.com/majority.htm>.

And they pay for it too:

Companies operating in the private prison business include the Corrections
Corporation of America<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Corrections_Corporation_of_America>,
the GEO Group <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GEO_Group>, Inc., Management and

costs an average of $60 a day

Broward
County, Florida
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Broward_County,_Florida>supervised
pretrial release costs about $7 a day per person while jail costs
$115 a day. The jail system costs a quarter of every county tax dollar in
Broward County, and is the single largest expense to the county taxpayer.[73
]<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Incarceration_in_the_United_States#cite_note-npr2010jan22-72>

Bondsmen have lobbied to cut back local pretrial programs from Texas to
California, pushed for legislation in four states limiting pretrial's
resources, and lobbied Congress so that they won't have to pay the bond if
the defendant commits a new crime.

Behind them, the bondsmen have powerful special interest
group<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Advocacy_groups>and millions of
dollars. Pretrial release agencies have a smattering of
public employees and the remnants of their once-thriving programs.

Before major recessions; rich get richer, and poor get poorer. People
forget that during a most prosperous period, the 1950s, the U.S. paid less
total taxes as a percentage of GDP, but the rich paid a progressively higher
income tax rate than they pay now. Progressive taxation. Roosevelt-Eisenhower

NOTE ON SOME RECURRING SITUATIONS IN THE "ARAB
SPRING"

I have had a front row television seat for the series of revolutions taking
place throughout the Arab world, which have become known as the "Arab
Spring." These revolutions have been directed as street protests by mostly
unarmed citizens against their autocratic governments. Here are some
responses by each side to this situation; which you should know about:

   1) Snipers used by the government on rooftops to murder protest
leaders: These snipers are from the police services or the armies of the
government, and have often been used to pick off persons in marches believed
to be leaders of the marches, or even to fire en masse upon the marchers
themselves. Many marchers believed that their governments would never
murder people for complaining about starving, homelessness, or lack of civil
rights--these marchers were wrong. The war will be won on the rooftops, and
these must be occupied, but look out for helicopters!;

2) Secret, plain clothes policemen infiltrating street demos and marches:
Nearly always in mass demonstrations the cops or army block off certain
sections of a city or town which lead to government offices or commercial
(banks) areas with some kind of barricades or lines of armored police. On
the marching side of these barricades however, there are many secret, plain
clothes police waiting to pick off protest leaders by arrest or sometimes by
shooting. They alway wear durable clothes (jeans, leather jackets) because
they expect to be fighting, and they work by grabbing protesters and hauling
them quickly across the police barricades to be arrested. They always carry
identification which identifies them as police. In Cairo, these people were
themselves detained by marchers, who found the police IDs and kept them (and
often beat the undercover cops or kept them prisoner. Marchers in the
vanguards of demonstrations need to watch out for each other, and watch out
for plain clothes cops, and defend each other when arrests are attempted;

  3) Counterdemonstrators, mercenaries, armies and such: When situations
get out of control for the government, they call in help in the form of
opposing mobs, mercenaries, or even foreign armies. In Egypt, this led to
volley and counter volley of Molotov cocktails and rocks in the streets, and
even horse and camel charges by sympathizers of the government. In Bahrain,
even a foreign army (from Saudi Arabia) was called in by the government to
shoot it's own citizens; in Libya, foreign mercenaries from surrounding
countries were called in to beat or murder the protesting citizens of that
country or migrant workers and illegal aliens were paid to do the same, and
at very high rates. Often in Libya, hardhats and helmets of a particular
color along with cudgels and long sticks or pipes were issued to the scabs
to distinguish them from the protesting citizens. In Bahrain, tanks and
armored personnel vehicles were used against protestors. In Libya, jet
fighters were called out to bomb and strafe demonstrators. One should never
believe the claims of democracy foisted about by fascist governments, for
the only policy of such governments is to enslave their own citizens by
whatever means are available;

4) Encirclement tactics of the government: the unpopular governments
always tried to hem in demostrators by encirclement and isolation. In
Cairo, the demonstrators posted lookouts in side streets and behind the
marchers to prevent this from happening;

5) Co-oopting the revolution: when the situation became nearly lost, the
governments would often stage fake firings of Justice Ministers and such
whipping boys, only to replace them with more of the same from within the
government. In Cairo and Tunis, the marchers and demonstrators established
"Committees for the Defense of the Revolution" to examine all candidates for
replaced ministers and to keep track of policies of the new governments to
ensure that real progress was being made, and prevent the gains made by the
people from being lost once the autocrats had left. Revolutions are not
things of days, weeks, or months: they must be nutured and cared for, and
the old regime must be excluded from positions of influence or power. What
was bad before will not be made better by a temporary holiday.

6) Just yesterday, I saw a piece on the situation in White
Russia(Byelorussia), where a fascist government is torturing political
opponents. There, flash mobs of protestors have been organinized for
certain times and days of the week at certain places, where marches then
take place without signs or slogans being exhibited, only clapping and
making noise. In this way, the marchers hope to make their wishes known
without being subject to arrest for treason or whatever trumped up nonsense
the government is calling "disturbing the social order." This seems to be
working, as the government knows full well why people march, but they cannot
pin charges on people for just marching along, clapping.

I have tried to give some examples of what democratic people's movements
will experience during times of unrest. These examples should by no means
be thought to be limited to the Arab World or to other countries. The
Fascist attack is going on world wide now, and the scenes I have just
described will surely be played out in New York City, Washington, London,
Moscow, Rome, and elsewhere when the people find that they can no longer
bear the injustices of their own governments.

End the oppression of cannabis and its consumers. Self defense is always
correct, and it is never illegal. *b_jb2001*

In September 2010 Amnesty
International<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amnesty_International>warned
in a report titled
*New Order, Same Abuses; Unlawful Detentions and Torture in Iraq* that up to
30,000 prisoners, including many veterans of the US detention system, remain
detained without rights in Iraq and are frequently tortured or abused.
Furthermore, it describes a detention system that has not evolved since Saddam
Hussein <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saddam_Hussein>'s regime, in which human
rights <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Human_rights> abuses were endemic with
arbitrary arrests and secret detention common and a lack of accountability
throughout the security forces. Amnesty's Middle East and North Africa
director, Malcolm Smart went on to say that "Iraq's security forces have
been responsible for systematically violating detainees' rights and they
have been permitted. US authorities, whose own record on detainees' rights
has been so poor, have now handed over thousands of people detained by US
forces to face this catalogue of illegality, violence and abuse, abdicating
any responsibility for their human
rights."[123]<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abu_Ghraib_torture_and_prisoner_abuse#cite_note-122>

Thailand's English-language newspaper *The

on the drug war in November 2007:

Of 2,500 deaths in the government's war on drugs in 2003, a fact-finding
panel has found that more than half were not involved in drugs at all. At a
brainstorming session, a representative from the Office of Narcotics Control
Board (ONCB) Tuesday disclosed that as many as 1,400 people were killed and
labeled as drug suspects despite the fact that they had no link to drugs.

Prosecutor Kunlapon Ponlawan said "it was not difficult to investigate

The January 24, 2008 edition of *The

* reported that "over half of those killed in 2003 had no links to the drugs

those involved, its findings have been buried. The outgoing interim prime
minister, Surayud Chulanont <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Surayud_Chulanont>,
took office vowing to right Mr Thaksin's wrongs. Yet this week he said there
was insufficient evidence to take legal action over the killings. It is easy
to see why the tide has turned. Sunai Phasuk, a researcher for Human Rights
Watch <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Human_Rights_Watch>, a lobbying group,
says that the panel's original report named the politicians who egged on the
gunmen. But after the
PPP<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/People%27s_Power_Party_%28Thailand%29>won
last month's elections, those names were omitted."

*The New York Times
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_New_York_Times>*reported on April 8,
2003:

Since the death of 9-year-old Chakraphan, there have been frequent reports
in the Thai press of summary executions and their innocent victims. There
was the 16-month-old girl who was shot dead along with her mother, Raiwan
Khwanthongyen. There was the pregnant woman, Daranee Tasanawadee, who was
killed in front of her two young sons. There was the 8-year-old boy, Jirasak
Unthong, who was the only witness to the killing of his parents as they
headed home from a temple fair. There was Suwit Baison, 23, a cameraman for
a local television station, who fell to his knees in tears in front of Mr.
Thaksin and begged for an investigation into the killing of his parents. His
stepfather had once been arrested for smoking marijuana, Mr. Suwit said.
When the police offered to drop the charge if he would admit to using
methamphetamines, he opted instead to pay the $100 fine for marijuana use.
Both parents were shot dead as they returned home from the police station on
a motorbike. Mr. Suwit said 10 other people in his neighborhood had also
been killed after surrendering to the
police.[25]<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matthew_McDaniel#cite_note-NYtimes2003april8-24>

On March 4, 2008 the *Asia Sentinel<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asia_Sentinel>
* reported:

The first war on drugs, as it was known, pretty much evolved into a war on
anybody the police decided to shoot. Under former premier Thaksin
Shinawatra, more than 2,800 people were killed over a three-month period
five years ago —about twice the normal murder rate of about 500 per month.
Appointed Premier Surayud
Chulanont<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Surayud_Chulanont>half-heartedly
set up a commission to investigate the drugs war nearly a
year after the coup, but it had the effect of absolving the Thaksin
administration. The committee found that about 1,370 of those deaths were
related to drugs, while 878 were not. Another 571 people were killed for no
apparent reason, according to the panel, and police investigated just 80 of
those cases.[39]<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matthew_McDaniel#cite_note-asiasentinel2008mar4-38>

Lara Logan reports on the story of a young Egyptian man, Khaled Said, who
tried to expose police corruption and was subsequently murdered. Now, with
an online presence, Said stands as a martyr to many in Egypt and beyond.

Khaled Said was beaten to death June 2010 by two policemen on a public
street. His death helped start the massive prostests in Egypt. * (CBS)*

(CBS) ALEXANDRIA, Egypt - Khaled Said's body was barely recognizable. The
28-year-old was beaten to death last June by two policemen on a public
street.

Retaliation, his friends believe, for a video Khaled posted on the internet.
It shows policemen allegedly sharing the spoils of a drug bust, reports CBS
News chief foreign correspondent Lara Logan.

"All of us are Khaled Said, because all of us might face the same destiny at
any point in time," said one man, who would only speak to CBS News if his
identity was hidden. He is one of the key organizers of the protests that
have rocked Egypt.

The man said Khaled's death was definitely a catalyst for the people's
revolution.

The disturbing image of Khaled's broken face was posted on Facebook. The
image quickly sparked a cyber campaign that spread outrage amongst Egypt's
youth.

They took that message from internet chat rooms to the streets of Cairo,
just days after his death, and then to Khaled's home town of Alexandria.

His story spread and Khaled Said, a middle-class businessman, became an
explosive symbol of police brutality under Hosni Mubarak's rule captured on
internet videos.

The abuse seen in internet videos is just a glimpse of what Egyptians say
they've lived with for decades.

"Khaled was lucky, let's be honest," said a man. "Because many people were
killed or tortured but no one knows about them."

And nobody knows their names.

"Their names, the details, what happened after their death, no one knows,"
the man said.

Khaled Said's story -- and the revolution it inspired -- is now a permanent
part of Egyptian history.

Higher Ground
Read the news ... oh, boy Still shrill: Opponents of pot as histrionic as
ever.

By *John Sinclair.<http://metrotimes.com/archives/authors?author=John%20Sinclair>
*

Published: February 2, 2011.

I said goodbye to Amsterdam after a long and productive winter spent living
and working in the bosom of my extended family at Radio Free Amsterdam,
serving as poet in residence at the 420 Café and daily enjoying the freedom
to smoke marijuana at will whether one is sick or not.

Arriving at the London St. Pancras train station, I caught the Piccadilly
tube to my modest quarters at the Headpress bunker in Wood Green and picked
up a copy of the *Evening Standard* on the way, only to find a full-blown
revival of the *Reefer Madness* approach on the front page of the Health &
Beauty* *section from a writer named Sophie Goodchild: "OUT OF THEIR MINDS:
THE TRUTH ABOUT TEENS, CANNABIS AND PSYCHOSIS."

"The award-winning foreign correspondent Patrick Cockburn describes how his
son Henry turned from talented artist to disheveled wreck," Sophie reports.

"'He stopped shaving or washing his hair and went barefoot, so his feet
became septic. He also soiled his jeans more than once.'

"Author Julie Myerson also knows how excessive cannabis use can threaten to
wreck families," Sophie goes on. "Her son Jake became hooked on the potent
'skunk' form of cannabis and Myerson was forced to throw him out of the
family home in south London."

Harry Anslinger must be dancing in his grave to hear this drivel. A sidebar
titled "CANNABIS: THE LOWS" proclaims "You may have a problem if you answer
'yes' to any of the following:

1) "Do you ever get high alone?" Every day, lady, every day!

5) "When your stash is nearly empty, do you feel anxious or worried about
how to get more?" Every time, lady, every time — unless I'm in Amsterdam,
where they always have exactly what you want at the hash counter, any time
you want it. No anxiety there! And in Michigan now, only when one's
caregiver hasn't arrived by the appointed hour or it's after closing at the
compassionate care center.

Me, I'm addicted to newspapers, and I follow the global cannabis news pretty
closely, but it's been quite a while since this particular tack has been
taken. Generally marijuana seems to be considered basically harmless and is
grudgingly conceded even to have positive medicinal properties, but it gets
you high and there's supposedly something fundamentally wrong with that.

Bang! The woodwork squeaks and out come all the freaks of law enforcement to
terrorize and abuse the smoking population for several generations, in ways
and with means way too vast to enumerate here. Plus which, as they say,
there's the "preaching to the choir" factor where the speaker keeps saying
the same things over and over again and everyone says "amen" and outside the
church the sinners and the greedheads and the money-changers just keep on
stepping.

My problem is that the more I think about it the madder I get. Despite the
reams of righteous information and reasonable argument against the idiotic
War on Drugs and the insufferable ignorance and brutality with which it is
waged, hundreds of thousands of marijuana smokers continue to be victimized
and persecuted by its relentless minions, dragged through the courts and
jails and "treatment programs," imprisoned, stripped of their rights, and
treated like vicious criminals.

But in the end it's all about getting high — and what's wrong with that?
They get high and we don't put them in prison. You can't even read the *Metro
Times* online without a bunch of vodka all up in your face, but you have to
worry about getting searched and arrested every time you leave the pad
because you've got a couple of joints in your pocket? Or be getting high and
listening to some records and the storm troopers come busting into your
house like you had John Dillinger in there with you?

Like Richard Pryor said, "How long? How long must this bullshit go on?" And
I guess the answer is, as long as we let them get away with it. It's a big
job to end the War on Drugs, because even though it's been well-established
that the emperor is completely bereft of clothing, he still has his Army and
Navy and Marine Corps and their local equivalents, his legions of prison
guards and employees, his endless ranks of lawyers and court personnel to
churn the reeking cauldron of "justice" — or to cite the late brother Pryor
again, "just us."

If you want a perfect example of what this mess is really about, look no
further than to the immediate north of Detroit, where the law enforcement
establishment of Oakland County and several of its communities continue to
punish marijuana smokers — even state-sanctioned medical marijuana patients
and their licensed suppliers ("caregivers") — as if the state's marijuana
laws had not actually been severely altered by the action of a majority of
its voters.

But the nature of the law doesn't really bother the forces of enforcement as
long as they can get away with their devilishment and keep raking in the
proceeds from the state Legislature and the county commissioners and the
searches and seizures and confiscations that are their rewards for trying to
keep us from getting high or simply taking our medicine.

*
Books:* I read in AlterNet of a pair of books that bear on our subject,
however tangentially. This first is by a guy I knew back in the day, when he
was attending the University of Michigan, Daniel Okrent, who's gone on to
wide journalistic acclaim. *Last Call: The Rise and Fall of
Prohibition*(Scribner) deals with the period "when booze was banned
but pot was not" and
is instructive for its study of an illegal substance and the culture that
grew out of it, and also for pointing out that alcohol prohibition lasted
only 12 years while ours has been going on eight or nine times longer than
even the War in Afghanistan.

James Cockcroft's *Mexico's Revolution: Then and Now* (Monthly Review Press)
raises the question: "What are the U.S.'s Real motives for launching a drug
war in Mexico?" and, in the words of the AlterNet reviewer, "exposes the
thinking behind U.S. narcotrafficking policy and the militarization of
Mexico and further south."

*
Prisoners:* My heart goes out to my old friend and comrade *Dana Beal*,
who's just suffered his third bust in three years for driving loads of
marijuana and/or money across the United States, something he's done for
about 40 years now. Beal claims in one case to have been delivering a
vanload of medical marijuana to patients in Michigan, in another to have
just collected a sizable cash donation towards the establishment of an
ibogaine clinic just outside the U.S. borders. Beal runs Cures Not Wars, and
organizes the *Global Marijuana March* each May.

Beal's in his 60s and still being persecuted. Two other close friends of
mine from the same generation are currently serving federal time for
large-scale marijuana violations, and just in case they let these guys read
the newspapers, let's send a big Detroit shout-out to brother Eddy Lepp in
California and Gorgeous George Kucewicz in New Jersey.

Finally, maybe you noticed the snide references to marijuana use in
connection with the creep in Arizona who shot up all those people. "I was
trying to tell him, you know, you need to get your life on the right track,"
a friend of his testified to *The Washington Post*, adding that he believed
Loughner was using marijuana, saying, "I was telling him about God and all
that. And he broke down crying, and he gave me a big ol' hug, and said,
'Thank you, you're one of the only ones that ever listened to me.'"

I hate to take a cheap shot, but maybe he should've stuck with marijuana.

*Dana Beal busted again*

Dana Beal, an East Village medical marijuana activist who runs Cures Not
Wars and organizes the annual Global Marijuana March in May, was arrested on
Thurs., Jan. 6, with 186 pounds of marijuana during a traffic stop in
*Barneveld,
Wisconsin,* according to CelebStoner.com. He and the car’s driver, Lance
Ramer of Omaha, Nebraska, are being held in lieu of a $50,000 bond each in
the Iowa County jail in *Dodgeville, Wisconsin.*

Beal is still facing charges in Nebraska where he was arrested in 2009 after
authorities found 150 pounds of marijuana in the van he was riding in. In
2008, he was arrested in Illinois for possession of a small amount of
marijuana and $150,000 in cash. He pleaded guilty to the Illinois marijuana
charge and paid a fine, but the $150,000 in cash that was seized was not
returned.

*Beal last year told The Villager* that the pot in the *Nebraska arrest* was
acquired in California, and that *he was planning to deliver it to medical
marijuana buyers’ clubs in Michigan and New York City.*

Universal healthcare is better than drug war.
Harm reduction costs a lot less than the astronomical incarceration rates of
the USA.
http://www.angelfire.com/rnb/y/universal.htm

Over 7.2 million people were on probation or parole, or incarcerated in jail
or prison at yearend 2006. The statistics and quotes are from the U.S.
Bureau of Justice Statistics. "About 3.2% of the U.S. adult population, or 1
in every 31 adults, were incarcerated or on probation or parole at yearend
2006."
http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:US_correctional_population_timeline.gif

The majority of U.S. prisoners are incarcerated due to the drug war! The
National Rifle Association is largely responsible due to its state-by-state
lobbying for mandatory minimum sentencing, also known as "Truth in
Sentencing." According to the New York Times, mandatory minimums are the
cause of the huge U.S. inmate population, and the incarceration rate that
dwarfs all other nations. And there is no benefit in reduced crime rates
compared to other nations with much lower incarceration rates. For details:

The majority of U.S. prisoners are incarcerated due to the drug war! The

The *Ngo Dinh Diem presidential visit to
Australia<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ngo_Dinh_Diem_presidential_visit_to_Australia>
* from 2 to 9 September 1957 was an official visit by the *first
President*of the Republic
of *Vietnam* <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/South_Vietnam>*.* It was part of
a year of traveling for Diem <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ngo_Dinh_Diem>,
who made official visits to the United States and other anti-communist
countries. As with his American trip, Diem was warmly and lavishly received
during the height of the Cold War <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cold_War>,
garnering bipartisan praise from both the Liberal Party of
Australia<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liberal_Party_of_Australia>of
Prime
Minister <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prime_Minister_of_Australia> Robert
Menzies <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Menzies> and the
opposition Australian
Labor Party <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Australian_Labor_Party>. He was
universally extolled by the media, which praised him for what they perceived
to be a successful, charismatic, democratic and righteous rule in South
Vietnam, overlooking his *authoritarianism,* election *fraud* and other
corrupt practices. Diem's visit was a highmark in relations between
Australia and South Vietnam. Over time, Diem became unpopular with his
foreign allies, who began to criticise his autocratic style and religious
bias. By the time of *his
assassination<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arrest_and_assassination_of_Ngo_Dinh_Diem>

The Australian Catholic <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Catholic> leadership
and media were particularly glowing towards the South Vietnamese head of
state. A member of Vietnam's Catholic minority and the brother of Vietnam's
leading archbishop, Diem had pursued policies in Vietnam favoring his
co-religionists. He exempted the Catholic Church from land redistribution,
gave them more aid and job promotions, and *allowed Catholic paramilitaries

responsible<http://inmystride.blogspot.com/2009/05/mechanism-of-fascism-in-usa.html>due
to its state-by-state lobbying for mandatory
minimum sentencing <http://corporatism.tripod.com/mandatory.htm>, also known
as "Truth in Sentencing." According to the New York Times, mandatory
minimums <http://www.mapinc.org/drugnews/v08/n417/a04.html> are the cause of
the huge U.S. inmate population and incarceration rate that dwarfs all other
nations. And there is no benefit in reduced crime rates compared to other
nations with much lower incarceration rates. Wikipedia:

The National Rifle Association is also partly responsible for the high U.S.
murder rate <http://corporatism.tripod.com/homicide.htm>. The NRA is out of
its collective hive mind concerning the Second Amendment and handguns. What
about the right to bear a rocket-propelled grenade launcher? Or a mortar. Or
a boxcutter in an airplane. Same for handguns. All are unnecessary for the
average citizen. Europe bans almost all handguns. Handguns serve little
purpose except to increase the already-high U.S. murder rate. Rifles and
shotguns are enough for the second amendment, and for protecting homes and
liberty. *"That rifle on the wall of the laborer's cottage or working class

Marijuana polls after 10 years of Global Marijuana Marches.

For details:

http://www.gallup.com/poll/144086/New-High-Americans-Support-Legalizing-Marijuana.aspx
October 28, 2010 New High of 46% of Americans Support Legalizing
Marijuana Liberals,
18- to 29-year-olds express the highest levels of support
by Elizabeth Mendes

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- While California's marijuana ballot initiative is
garnering a lot of attention this election cycle, Gallup finds that
nationally, a new high of 46% of Americans are in favor of legalizing use of
the drug, and a new low of 50% are opposed. The increase in support this
year from 44% in 2009 is not statistically significant, but is a
continuation of the upward trend seen since 2000.

[image: 1969-2010 Trend: Support for Making Use of Marijuana Legal]

These results are from Gallup's annual Crime poll, conducted Oct. 7-10.
Approximately 8 in 10 Americans were *opposed* to legalizing marijuana when
Gallup began asking about it in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Support for
legalizing the drug jumped to 31% in 2000 after holding in the 25% range
from the late 1970s to the mid-1990s.

A separate question in the poll asked about legalizing marijuana for medical
use, and found support significantly higher than it is for legalizing the
use of marijuana in general. Seventy percent of Americans say they favor
making marijuana legally available for doctors to prescribe in order to
reduce pain and suffering. This figure is down, however, from 78% in 2005
and 75% in 2003.

*Political Leanings, Age Divide Americans' Support for Legalizing Marijuana*

[image: Support for Legalizing Use of Marijuana, by Subgroup, October 2010]
Across numerous subgroups, liberals' support, at 72%, is by far the highest.
There is widespread support for legalization among 18- to 29-year-olds (61%)
as well.

Majority support is also found among Democrats, independents, men, and
political moderates.

A large majority of those living in the West, which encompasses California,
are in favor of making the drug legal. Support is significantly lower in the
South and Midwest.

Political conservatives and Republicans are the least supportive of
legalizing marijuana. Seniors express a similarly low level of support.

Women are 10 percentage points less likely than men to favor legalizing the
drug.

These demographic, political, and ideological differences in support are
much the same as they were in 2009.
*

Bottom Line*

Arguments for and against legalizing marijuana -- for personal or medical
use -- are likely to continue for years to come. Even if Proposition 19 wins
in California on Nov. 2, as state law it will still come up against federal
law, which bans the growth and sale of marijuana.

Support for making the drug legal in general, however, is growing among
Americans. The public is almost evenly split this year, with 46% in favor
and 50% opposed. If the trend of the past decade continues at a similar
pace, majority support could be a reality within the next few years.
*Survey Methods*

Results for this Gallup poll are based on telephone interviews conducted
Oct. 7-10, 2010, with a random sample of 1,025 adults, aged 18 and older,
living in the continental U.S., selected using random-digit-dial sampling.

Each question reported here was asked of a half-sample of approximately 500
national adults.

For results based on these total samples of national adults, one can say
with 95% confidence that the maximum margin of sampling error is ±5
percentage points.

Interviews are conducted with respondents on landline telephones (for
respondents with a landline telephone) and cellular phones (for respondents
who are cell phone-only). Each sample includes a minimum quota of 150 cell
phone-only respondents and 850 landline respondents, with additional minimum
quotas among landline respondents for gender within region. Landline
respondents are chosen at random within each household on the basis of which
member had the most recent birthday.

Samples are weighted by gender, age, race, education, region, and phone
lines. Demographic weighting targets are based on the March 2009 Current
Population Survey figures for the aged 18 and older non-institutionalized
population living in continental U.S. telephone households. All reported
margins of sampling error include the computed design effects for weighting
and sample design.

In addition to sampling error, question wording and practical difficulties
in conducting surveys can introduce error or bias into the findings of
public opinion polls.
