New Power Pack

<pre>Great find James.

I wonder how well the PowerPot V would work with a wood stove like the Sierra or Bush Buddy??? (yes, very messy with soot)

Using my Giga canister stove would be expensive and take a lot of canisters. At 1 amp it would take close to two hours to charge the 1800 battery which is the same size as my Andriod's battery. That is one full 4oz canister set on low throttle.

Just to compare:
My Nomad 3.5 solar charger with at Guide 10 battery pack and one set on 2300 mAh batteries weighs in at 17oz including all the cords I use. It has kept me well supplied with all the electrons I needed (Android used as GPS/Maps/Phone/web journal updates/camera) for the first 260 miles of Southern Calif.

1) PowerPot V with lid 19.5oz + Giga stove 3oz + one 4oz Canister =26.5oz

2) Evernew ti 1.3L pot 5oz + Giga &amp; Canister + solar charger 17oz = 29oz

3) ti pot+alcohol stove+6oz fuel+wind screen 12.8oz + solar chr= 29.8 oz

4) PowerPot V 19.5 + Sierra wood stove 16oz = 35.5oz

Here in Washington with the trees the PowerPot V might be a great choice if backpacking/fishing/hunting rather than thru-hiking.

Scott's suggestion of the Enchantments is a good one for beauty. However a permit is required and only 60 people are allowed in for any one night and 75% of the slots are give out in a lottery held in March. The rest are held in reserve to be awarded to those that are lined up at the door at 7:45 AM and people line up quite early.

My suggestion would be to drive to Salmon La Sac near Cle Elum and hike a loop starting by hiking up to Cathedral Rock and then hiking south on the Pacific Crest Trail going by Deep Lake, Waptus Lake, and Spectacle Lake then back out by way of Pete Lake. If you are long mileage hikers you can add several side trips: Dutch Miller Gap and Lk Ivanhoe - Spade Lake - and a day hike south from Spectacle.

Another loop (maybe better) would to park at Snoqualmie Pass (I-90) PCT trail head and take the old PCT up past Alpintal Ski area to Snow Lake and Dutch Miller Gap. Then down to the PCT at Waptus Lake and south on the PCT past Joe and Alaska lakes back to Snoqualmie Pass. I've not hike the "Old PCT route" up to Dutch Miller Gap but I have done the rest of this loop many times and the views do not come any better.
Take a look at my pics of this area: https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.340891232666144.84310.100002358093214&amp;type=3

If my knee doesn't allow me to get back to my thru-hike soon I might be interested in hiking opposite directions and trading car keys for and non loop hike through the Alpine Wilderness between Snoqualmie and Stevens Passes or maybe through the Goat Rocks Wilderness.

A few questions for you:

1) how many miles per day are you wanting to do?
2) do you need a loop trail or one way .... what's your transportation issues?
3) do you want to thru-hike or backpack?
4) do you wish to get some fishing in or just hike?

<pre>Hi,

I would like to buy a backpack. I have tried a few of them including Granite Gear (Crown, Aji and Blaze) but no luck. I have a strange problem. For some reason the shoulder strap does not contour to my shoulder. There is space towards the back under the shoulder strap. I have this problem with other brands as well. It is very frustrating. Would you know what is happening? At first it would seem that the pack is too long but I am already trying the short torso packs. The waist belt is resting on the hips. I had people help me at the stores. I am 5"6' so I am not petite and my torso looks proportionate to my body. I am really puzzled. Has anyone come across something like that before?
I am looking forward to hearing from you.
Thank you in advance.

I now have a down pillow which is very nice but takes up too much space in smaller light backpack. Weight saving would be at least 5 oz
Any thoughts on this would be appreciated.

<pre>I bought an i/o magic power pack http://www.iomagic.com/ from Staples. Charged it, then hooked it up to my iPhone 4s ....... it discharged completely but did not recharge my phone. I tried it three times ... nada.

I'm about to go backpacking starting from Maryland and will return it when I get back to Tennessee ... in the meantime. Anyone got a good quick suggestion ... I have one week to find a replacement and I don't think I have enough time to wait for one to come in the mail.

I'm planning to use my phone as my camera as well as write on my blog ... and I will keep it in Airplane mode except when using it for posting on my blog while on the Trail.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Kinda surprised that it's not widely available in the US or A.

<pre>had a problem with bugs. Have backpacked in the Grand
Monument east of Tucson, now spend most of my time

It was decades ago in northern Arizona that I was starting to fall asleep
in the desert, no tarp, just a ground cloth and a sleeping bag. I
reflected on how close to nature I was, I could even hear the scrabbling of
an insect's legs as it crawled across my sleeping bag. But then I said to
myself, wait a minute, that sound isn't coming from on top of the sleeping
bag, it's coming from INSIDE the sleeping bag. And at that exact moment I
felt the crawl of insect feet across my lower back.

I was out of that sleeping bag in a flash, grabbed the flashlight that I
always kept handy (this was before I discovered headlamps), and saw that
the trespasser was a millipede. I believe that millipedes don't bite and I
normally don't go out of my way to destroy insects but I wasn't about to
share my sleeping bag with an intruder so I squashed that millipede with a
rock. And resolved never to sleep in the open again.

I actually have slept outside on a couple of beaches in Hawaii but the wind
and sand made setting up the tent a hassle -- and also kept the mosquitos
away. Also by that point I already had over 100 mosquito bites so I may've
suffered a couple more on the beach but wouldn't have noticed.

Thermarest bags

<pre>
Anyone tried Therm-a-Rest's new line of sleeping bags ? They're kinda like the Big Agnes system, where there's not much insulation on the bottom, so an insulated pad is required to complete the thermal envelope. But instead of using a pad sleeve, they use straps. Apparently they work with wide pads (i.e. 25"), which I require; none of the BA bags that meet my weight/volume requirements work with pads larger than 20".

the Idaho Centennial Trail all started for me on a work hike with the state trails co-ordinator, in May of 2004. from there, it became a seven year project to complete the ICT. that took me from 2004 to 2011.

I'm finally getting motivated to put some pictures and videos into YouTube format to share with others.

here's a sample of what is waiting for a hiker at the finish line in northern Idaho. if you haven't seen the big lake country and rain forest of northern Idaho, it is such a contrast to the desert of southern Idaho.

I hope that someone will be inspired to take a journey, or at least enjoy the journey through my pictures.
