<description>hallo i would like to try to use LS as a shell in a XP embedded runtime,
the best way to achieve this is to "componentize" it: hence i should
know which binaries, core operating system files, or registry entries
that are required by an LS installation in order to work properly.
Could you point me to any resource?
Has anyone of you heard of any componentized-LS before?
Thanks in advance,

    <description>Hi &lt; at &gt; all

here is a little question at josh or at the ls dev Team

What will happen with litestep.com?

There is not really much this time. But I'm glad to see changes there.

By the way:

What's about to put links to all available LiteSTEP sites on the net.

There are not so much that time.

    <link>http://comments.gmane.org/gmane.comp.windows.shells.litestep/6363</link>
    <description>Fellow 'Steppers,

I have recently come over a new laptop with Vista
pre-installed. I will definitely not work without LiteStep,
so I face the task of either installing XP (forfeiting, e.g.
Office 2007) or dealing with hiccups in using LS.
How usable is the very latest, unstable version under Vista?
Has there been any significant progress since the last State
of the Step in April, where it said: "Still, LiteStep 0.24.8
should be usable on Vista. Maybe not the Betas, but the
final release should."
How far are you guys?

Thanks for keeping LiteStep up to date!

    <description>Hello fellow LiteSteppers!

Thanks to the efforts of Acidfire, ilmcuts, jugg, Maduin and Tobbe the
LiteStep Development Team is happy to announce LiteStep 0.24.8 Release
Candidate 1.

More information and downloads are available at: http://www.lsdev.org/

We expect this release to be a drop-in replacement for 0.24.7. If you
have *any* issues (minor or large) please be sure to inform us about
them rather than working around the issue and not telling us. We'd much
appreciate it. You can contact us at our team address: devteam [at]

<title>State of the Step April 2008</title>
    <link>http://comments.gmane.org/gmane.comp.windows.shells.litestep/6332</link>
    <description>Dear LiteSteppers,

When you least expect it... an update from your friendly LiteStep
Development Team:

Welcome to the April 2008 edition of the State of the Step!

On the agenda this time:

1. The Development Team
2. LiteStep vs. Litestep
3. LiteStep 0.24.8
4. Windows Vista
5. In Closing...

Go!

1. The Development Team
- A(nother) new lineup
-------------------------

Development at a snail's pace... and that's being nice. jugg and I
(ilmcuts) have been working on the core on and off, but that's hardly
enough to fulfill the expectations. Thus we went out recruiting people.
Of the several people we contacted, we are proud to announce that three
have accepted the offer. Welcome, Acidfire, Tobbe, and Xjill!

This means the devteam now is:

Acidfire
ilmcuts
jugg
Tobbe
Xjill

Even with the new lineup it will be very hard to follow through with
everything we need and would like to do. We're trying our best but very
much want and need any help we can get. We hope that others we have
talked to will decide to work with us as well. If you are interested in
being part of the team, please let us know!

We have also revived our contact mail address. You can now reach the LS
Development Team by writing to: devteam at lsdev.org.

2. LiteStep vs. Litestep
--------------------------

The ongoing, never ending debate. Well, we hope to "officially" end it
once and for all. We will be deciding on the LSDev Team official
capitalization of LiteSTEP before the next release. So, if you have any
heart felt comments to add to the discussion now is the time do so.

3. LiteStep 0.24.8
--------------------

While we may have been quiet in terms of even experimental releases, our
CVS history reveals "+8946/-3915 lines changed" since June 01, 2007.
Note that this number includes documentation changes or copyright date
changes too. The change history since 0.24.7 is "+14949/-7705 lines
changed".

Unfortunately, the release of 0.24.8 has been held up. However, unless
you are on Vista, the experimental builds contain much of what is going
to be in the final. What is the problem, then? While we are no longer
striving for full Vista compatibility in this particular release (more
on that below), there are a couple of bugs that are just not acceptable
in a release. Missing volume controls may just barely be acceptable, but
broken startup applications or LiteStep crashing on startup is not.

Since the last experimental build, which contained the new math parser,
for example, we have continued to work on AppBar support, made sure that
Explorer will run if you boot into safe mode(*), have fixed numerous
small bugs, and some more, besides all the Vista changes. We're looking
at getting out a Beta release which will have all that but will not yet
have fixes for all known Vista issues. If we can't find the time to do a
proper Beta we will at least be posting another experimental build. If
you can't wait for that you're free to compile your own "nightly"
builds! Feel free to ask us for support if you need help doing that.

(*) We are starting Explorer in safe mode because you might be trying
to fix a broken LiteStep by going there. Lots of beginners use it when
they get scared after installing LiteStep and want to remove it again.

4. Windows Vista
------------------

In case there is any confusion, we're trying to make the usual 32-Bit
LiteStep work on both 32-Bit and 64-Bit Vista. While a 64-Bit LiteStep
has been compiled, it shares almost all problems of the 32-Bit version
and offers little in return. On top of that, it requires rebuilt
modules. So our focus for the foreseeable future will be on 32-Bit
LiteStep.

While LiteStep does somewhat work on Windows Vista as is, there are
several problems. For example, the welcome screen delay is back. Some
startup apps are being run twice, some not at all. Tray tooltips are
broken and some tray icons like the volume icon don't appear at all.
LiteStep no longer detects if Explorer has already run startup apps and
vice versa. Some system sounds aren't being played. The wallpaper isn't
always shown, all you get is a black desktop. Etc. etc.

Unfortunately, for each issue that we fix another one or two are
uncovered. Trying to fix them all would hold up the release
indefinitely. But we're looking at fixing the worst of the issues. In
fact, except for the missing icons, we believe we can fix all of the
above. Given the history, however, it wouldn't surprise us if one or two
fixes didn't work out in the end.

Still, LiteStep 0.24.8 should be usable on Vista. Maybe not the Betas,
but the final release should.

4. In Closing...
------------------

This marks the end of this State of the Step. If you have any questions
or suggestions please feel free to respond via the LSML, IRC, or our
contact mail. We will be happy to talk to you.

Happy LiteStepping,
- The LiteStep Development Team

    <title>Litestep.Info</title>
    <link>http://comments.gmane.org/gmane.comp.windows.shells.litestep/6328</link>
<description>As some of you might remember, there was a large amount of talk
semi-recently regarding bringing litestep.info back online. A lot of
talk, not much action, both on here and on West's board (which seems to
be down :-( )

The site's intent was to be an "informative", user-friendly place for
new and prospective users.

Anyhow, I thought it prudent to ask YOU, the litestep users, what sort
of ideas could be seen as "informative" and thus, something to be
considered as content for the site.

As I recall, things "we" DON'T want:

    * Forums -- We have enough of these. I don't really think having
      forums is necessary.
    * Wiki -- Dont think another one of this is needed either, as we
      already have one: http://wiki.litestep.com.ar/Index (Note:
      Although, I like the idea of a wiki.litestep.info mirror/redirect
      thing)
    * Themes -- We have SEVERAL sites that cover this as well. Also,
doesn't fit into the scope of the site either.

Things we "do" like/want:

    * Module Documentation: This is a *big* undertaking however, and not
something that would be available at launch.
    * Articles/Tutorials:
o Theme Reviews: This was discussed on the forums, I think it
would be a nice idea to do a weekly review of a theme, with
a rating system, and several categories to rate.
o Theme Tutorials: Basic tutorials on how to do BASIC
            themeing, nothing advanced
          o General Tutorials
    * FAQ: Basic questions only. A more advanced FAQ can be found at
ls-universe. Suggestions for questions to ask/answer would be
      appreciated. Examples:
o What is LiteStep? (Remember, new people, so they wont really
            know)
o How does it work? (Simple answer)
          o ????
    * RSS Feeds to other sites? I dont see why not.
    * An image gallery? Not exactly "info" but this *would* help show
      litestep off.

I've been working rather fervently on this lately, and while I dont have
alot of content, I do have a design in the works:
http://lsinfo.the-golem.com/ and
http://the-golem.com/projects/lsinfo_v3/index.html show the project in
various stages. I know the design isnt anything overly special, or
innovative, but I am kinda proud of it.

Your feedback is much appreciated.

    <title>"OTS3"</title>
    <link>http://comments.gmane.org/gmane.comp.windows.shells.litestep/6312</link>
    <description>Greetings,

yet again i come in peace and with an anouncement regarding the litestep
distribution that could be ots3:

Since Andymon released his great ThemeManager (
http://www.ls-universe.info/news.php?item.455.1 ) with support for ots3, i
have all the tools required for a "normal" Litestep distribution. So i
made one :]

Features:

- a neat installer
- full ots2 compability (if not its a bug)
- no additional requirements ( "no python" )
- all that ots3 stuff (
http://www.ls-themes.org/index.php?cat=article&amp;show=ots3 )

Why use it?

While nothing speaks *against* using it, there are only meta benefits from
using it either.
What i mean by that is that nothing will change if you just install and
use it. How could it, since your theme will stay the same and there are no
ots3 themes so far.

There is only one reason to use it: *If* you improve it, everyone,
including
you, can benefit from it. OTS2 wont change anymore, but OTS3 can and will
benefit from your help!

So, if i you want to try it, please do and please leave comments at
ls-themes.org or over at ls-universe.info!

One last word of warning thou: Since LOSI and this distro both use
Andymons ThemeManager, either will stop working if you install the other
on the same user account ( different is fine). You will have to change the
LitestepDir/ThemeDir/ProfileDir in the TM if you want to switch back to
the older installation.

Installer is here: http://www.ls-themes.org/ots3/Litestep-ots3.exe
Docs are here: http://www.ls-themes.org/index.php?cat=article&amp;show=ots3

So Long, and thanks for all the .. attention :)

    <title>French translation of LOSI</title>
    <link>http://comments.gmane.org/gmane.comp.windows.shells.litestep/6278</link>
<description>I'm getting ready to release a new version of LOSI. In fact, the only
things missing right now are the German and French language strings.
I've got help with the German part, but need someone to translate the
English language strings to French. I have some of the strings already
translated from an earlier version of the installer, but a few strings
has been added and/or modified since then.

Here are the language strings: http://tlundberg.com/LOSI/LanguageStrings.nsh

All the ... in the French part of that file needs to be replaced with
something meaningful.

Thanks in advance and Happy Holidays!

    <title>LSX Command &gt; Add text to file</title>
    <link>http://comments.gmane.org/gmane.comp.windows.shells.litestep/6274</link>
    <description>Hi Everyone,

I'm trying to track my time at work. I was hoping to use LSXCommand (plus
any needed modules) to do something like:

?tracker "Some Client &gt; I did this for them"

And it would simply write the string to a file and add a timestamp if
possible.

Anybody have any recommendations on how to get this started? Thanks!

    <title>Vista DWM</title>
    <link>http://comments.gmane.org/gmane.comp.windows.shells.litestep/6270</link>
    <description>Hullo,

I've just installed Vista in a side-by-side setup with XP, and even
though I haven't gotten around to testing LS on it yet (need to build
from the latest source), I've been thinking a little about the way
Vista handles it's windows. The way the Desktop Windows Manager (DWM)
in Vista does it is to buffer all windows offscreen, and then put them
together as is needed (for more info see this:
http://blogs.msdn.com/greg_schechter/archive/2006/03/05/544314.aspx ).
This is what gives Vista the possibility to do things like real time
updating previews for tasks and such.

Now, as the customizer/modder I am, I start thinking that this is
something LS should be able to make use of. Not through the core of
course, but through modules. Think taskbars and VWM: At the moment
explorer does something LS does not, i.e. show previews of tasks when
you hover them in the taskbar. For VWM this should open up a bunch of
stuff (think something ala Beryl for Linux, even though that's a bit
over the top of what one would want/need). I'm not saying we should
make a Beryl replica for windows (that could be done with a standalone
app), what I'm saying is that there are a couple of new possibilities
that open up for cool things to integrate into the shell.

I'm not really sure if there's much to get out of this, but I thought
I'd vent my thoughts a bit on the list since I know there's a bunch of
really creative people here (and also since it's been rather quiet
lately). At least this way if nobody comes up with anything I'll feel
better about not coming up with anything too exciting either :3
Dunno, but I keep thinking that it should be able to something
sci-fi-ish with this :P

    <title>lsdev.org revamped</title>
    <link>http://comments.gmane.org/gmane.comp.windows.shells.litestep/6252</link>
    <description>Hey all,

You may or may not have seen it already - we have redesigned, rewritten
and updated the Litestep Development site: lsdev.org. Many thanks and
all credit go out to jugg, who has put tremendous effort into this one.

The forums have been replaced by the LSDev Mailing List and its
gmane.org interface, but apart from that all content from the old site
has been migrated - and new content has been added. For example, we now
have a 'Community' section with an overview over our community
resources: Mailing Lists, IRC Channels, Websites. Then there's the
'Development' section, including the infrastructure the devteam uses:
our bugtracker which is finally put to good use, the cvs repository, and
more. Over time we'll also try to amass development guides and hints for
both core and module development. Some of it is already in place, some
of it is very much a work in progress.

If you want to take part in that work in progress, join the LSDev
Mailing list or come visit us in #litestep and #lsdev on irc.freenode.net.

Happy Litestepping,

The Litestep Development Team
http://www.lsdev.org/

PS. As another example for work in progress, we're working on merging
the wiki and bugtracker authentication. Once that is done other
developers can use it. Until then you'll need to contact us to sign up,
unfortunately.

<title>Paging Brian's Brain -- HTML 'theme config' with form elements</title>
    <link>http://comments.gmane.org/gmane.comp.windows.shells.litestep/6236</link>
<description>This is mostly for Brian, because I think he has knowledge in this
field. As I understand it, you helped create an HT-based utility of somesort
For a little bit of background, I'm working on a series of themes.
Basically, you have a SimpleTheme, which includes tutorials on how to
implement addons/widgets. Then you have the IntermediateTheme, which has
all those addons/widgets included already. I was thinking that the best
way to do this would be with HTML-type files.
Anyway, I was wondering if'n it's possible to create an HTML doc that
makes use of forms elements (checkboxes and such) that would directly
interact with an associated rc file.
If what I'm thinking is right, it would be an easy(?) way to create a
'graphical' themeconfig since no modules really allow use of GUI
elements such as checkboxes or radial buttons.

Let me know if I'm on the right track, totally offbase, or what...

    <title>LiteStep Progress website</title>
    <link>http://comments.gmane.org/gmane.comp.windows.shells.litestep/6208</link>
<description>"Lately there has been a rumor saying Litestep is dead / dying. People
claim no progress is being made and that soon no one will use it
anymore. Not only do these rumors annoy the heck out of Litestep
developers and users, it also discourages new people from starting to
use Litestep.

The LiteStep Progress website (http://lsp.litestep.info/) exists to
prove them wrong. By posting all bits of progress being made in Litestep
development we will show the skeptics that Litestep is very much alive.
We will show potential new users that they don't have to be afraid
Litestep won't be supported anymore in the future. We will show
developers all their work will not be in vain.

This site is also here to motivate developers to continue their work.
Seeing lots of other people all work on Litestep related projects is a
great way to get yourself motivated to keep coding."

Tobbe and I created this website some time ago. There are already a lot
of progress reports on it and now it's time to really promote it.
Everyone interested should check it out and all developers should start
posting on it.

"Any progress made on coding anything for Litestep may be posted here.
Advances to the core, a module, an installer, a helper utility, a
website and any other code should be put on this site. Also very
advanced scripts and widgets like fractal.design's DeskIcons can be
posted here."

    <title>LiteStep and Linux?</title>
    <link>http://comments.gmane.org/gmane.comp.windows.shells.litestep/6183</link>
<description>I know that there are several open source programs that are developed
and then compiled specifically for the various platforms.

Is this possible for LiteStep?

If so, even those wistful Linux users might have reason to check out a
"LiteStep for Linux." It would seem that an open source shell would have
an advantage in this sort of portability: Use LiteStep/Linux at home and
LiteStep/Windows or LiteStep/Mac at work. Same theme, but with different
ways of addressing the compatibility problem.

Especially in that its purpose is as "a visual output" rather than input
to another program or incorporation into a common database, etc. Some
three or so programmers might be able to work up a "LinuxStep"
(LinuxLite?) utility which can handle any OTS2 theme.

Run it though "Windows prep" and it compiles into the LiteStep we
currently have and enjoy. Run it through "Mac/OS prep", however, and the
result will be a compiled version for Macs. "Linux prep" could do the
same for that platform.

No doubt a lot of work, but is it worth it?

Is it even do-able, program-wise?

It would seem that the Linux compile would be the easiest (assuming any
of these are possible) in that the OS is open source.

??
