Hi!

In http://awesome.naquadah.org/bugs/index.php?do=details&task_id=208 it
says, that the default alt+tab behaviour has been implemented. In the
rc.lua file that ships with the current awesome 3 version in Debian
experimental, alt+tab only calls awful.client.focus.history.previous,
which switches focus only between the last two focused clients (even
when alt is held down and tab is pressed multiple times).

Has anyone lua code floating around that accomplishes this? If not, do
I have to define a keychain for alt or something like that? Any
pointers?

Regards,
Tobias

I noticed that you decided to go with the lua spawn() method. I have

features such as starting programs but I usually do not do it in the

An alternative approach that isn't tied to a specific window manager is
an arrangement like this:

xsession/core -- a script that launches the gnome daemons, cleans up the
environment, changes priority levels etc.

xsession/current - a simple file that sets WM="x" so you can select
window managers
                                without altering a source file under
version control/

xsession/x - a file with window manager specific configuration.

The core based upon the WM= value from current sources xsession/x
to perform window manager specific pre-launch, and launching..

in xsession/x there is something like this (awesome's for example)

<snip>
awesome 2>>$X_SCRIPT_LOG&
WM_PID=$!
</snip>

here is the relevant part of core

<snip>
source "$X_SCRIPT_DIR/$WM"

wait $WM_PID

kill $DBUS_SESSION_BUS_PID
</snip>

This setup allows you to do post window manager setup after the "wait"
command and
still clean up things like gnome etc.

Hopefully this helps someone who occasionally ends up juggling various
window managers.

Because awesome seems to lack an inbuild method of starting programs at startup
(unlike my previous wm-of-choice, fluxbox), and kdm, gdm and other display
managers completely ignore .xinitrc and .Xsession, I made the following wrapper
script:

#!/bin/bash
STARTFILE=${HOME}/.config/awesome/startup
if [ ! -e $STARTFILE ]; then
touch $STARTFILE
chmod +x $STARTFILE
fi
$STARTFILE
exec awesome

Then I modified the /usr/share/xsessions/awesome.desktop to run the wrapper
script. (KDM uses the mentioned .desktop file, at least on Gentoo). The programs
to start should be placed in the ~/.config/awesome/startup file.

Maybe something similar could be integrated in the future versions of awesome?

Naming desktops ? awesome 3.0 configuration confusion.

Hello,

I am having difficulty configuring awesome 3.0.

I would like to name the "virtual desktops" in awesome, and specify a
default layout.

To do this I stripped the default configuration and tried something like
this:

vs_code = tag({ name = 'coding', layout = 'max' })
vs_code.screen = 1

tags = { vs_code, vs_browser, vs_com, vs_audio }

It works but in a very strange way.

I end up with my named desktops - although the name "code" is truncated
to "cod" in the taglist widget.
These desktops are followed by the default 1-9, and sometimes apps show
up on both "code" and "1",
particularly after restarts ?

I have also tried something like:

tags[1]={ "my desktops ...." }

but that doesn't fly either.

Could someone enlighten me, or point me at source files,docs, etc ?

Cheers,
Mike Mattie

I know awesome is a minimalist window manager, but it seems like
either awesome (or at least the Ubuntu package) should include a
usable default configuration. Does awesome 3.0 change much about its
default configuration?

i've been using awesome for a while now and i've recently migrated to
awesome 3.0. there's a couple of behavioural things i'd like to ask
about:

1. since version 3.0 final, when a new floating window is created the
   placement calculations don't seem to work. the new windows appear
   below the top status bar at coordinates x = 0, y = 0 regardless of
   the number and position of other floating windows already present.
   the release candidates before 3.0 final were not affected by this
   behaviour.

   is this a bug or am i missing a setting in my rc.lua? i've got this
   in my awful.hooks.manage.register(hook_manage):
   c.floating_placement = "smart"

   please note that there is no behavioural change when i set the
   floating_placement to "under_mouse"

2. since version 2.3.? new windows that pop up get the focus but they
   don't necessarily come to the front. for instance, i use gxmessage to
   display reminders and these don't come to the front when something
   like mplayer is running in fullscreen mode.

   is there a way to force certain windows to the front?

thanks for this great window manager,
