<pre>Hi Guys,

I'm Shigeo Honda, Plone Users Group Japan. Will you give us some advice?

PyCon Japan 2012 will be held on September 15 -16 in Tokyo. PyCon
Japan organizers asked a couple of python related users group, such
as Django, SciPy, Pyramid, Plone etc, to have some sessions in the
event. And they request proposals.

I worry about PyCon is 'die-hard' python developer event and not
suitable for Plone. So, I'd like to know how Plone community work
with PyCon in other countries. What kind of session is good for PyCon
attendees? Please let me know your experience in PyCon.

I appreciate any advice and comments.

Thank you,

New presentation. Plone: the CMS that hits above it'sweight

<pre>Hi,

I gave this presentation to the Australian Computer Sociaty last week
that seemed to get a good response.

http://www.slideshare.net/djay/plone-the-cms-that-hits-above-its-weight
If you download the presentation you can see my notes which might be
needed for it to make more sense.

It's meant as an introduction to Plone. Feel free to use it or expand
on it.
I took a new way at explaining Plone. I told a story of how Plone is
used by some of the largest organisations but many might not have
heard of it. I used stats to show it's less popular with smaller sites
and explained this with the lack of easy hosting options. I hightailed
security and the increase in innovations and also Ploud. I thought it
worked quiet well.

My 2c, I think Plone has the opportunity to position itself as the
fast, flexible, "cleaner to develop", innovative alternative CMS. An
underdog. I'm not sure how we could break from peoples perceptions of
Plone from the past however. Maybe the marketing experts have some
ideas?

virtual appliances for Plone evaluation

<pre>Guy Heckman and I are putting together a VMWare appliance and a VirtualBox appliance for Plone 4.0.5.

We thought it would be a good way to ease people into trying out Plone. If you look at vmware.com/appliances there are many out there for other CMSs, but none for Plone. Same at other virtual appliance sites below. This idea stemmed from our PloneEdu buildout project (first a buildout, then a custom unified installer, and then an appliance)...

Is this something that should be part of the Plone marketing effort? Below is the rest of a message I sent out to the plone-website team yesterday - sorry for the duplicate-ish message but this idea probably falls in a couple of places (plone.org site, documentation, marketing). Has this been considered before? Other questions/thoughts below.

Kim

There are a couple of places we can (eventually) get them hosted:

http://vmware.com/appliances/directory/cat/502

and

http://virtualboximages.com/

and possibly

http://www.turnkeylinux.org/

Or we could use BitTorrent to distribute them from someplace else.

Is there interest in pointing to these appliances from plone.org? Perhaps making a plone.org/appliances or plone.org/eval section? The point of these appliances is to make it easy for someone to evaluate Plone. There are a lot of appliances out there for other CMSs. We could make them for a mix of OSs as well as for things like the PloneEdu buildout. Do we want to set some ground rules on what kinds of documentation goes with these, or what they can contain, and should we organize now who will maintain these as OS and Plone versions come out?

<pre>Hi,

I'm attending an eGovernment workshop in Brussels today. An interesting presentation was about OpenPublic. It looks like Drupal has found an interesting way to enter the public sector market.

More:
http://openpublicapp.com/

OpenPublic is a Drupal-based content management system (CMS) born from a decade of work building secure, scalable, transparent websites for all sectors of government. It is a community-driven platform supported by a network of innovative open source contributors committed to Open Government.

This could be an inspiring example for the Plone community,

An observation about Plone T-Shirts

<pre>After attending a local tech gathering
&lt;http://wordpressprovidence.com/2010/12/cms-smackdown/&gt; focused on
sorting out various CMSes, I wanted to share a thought about Plone
t-shirts. Due to some panel size limitations, Plone was not represented
on the panel but I was able to get a few good words in for Plone along
with a couple of panelists who, when asked, would seriously consider
Plone as a second choice CMS if their's was not available. So to
bolster the case for Plone and get out some advertising I wore my Plone
Tune-Up shirt, currently my only Plone shirt.

The issue with this shirt and others is that the word "Plone" is pretty
small and can't be read at a distance greater than a few feet. Don't
get me wrong, I love my tune-up shirt (thanks again Six Feet Up!) and
it's design/purpose was not for billboard advertising. But from across
the room someone couldn't read "Plone" on my shirt; and at this type of
event that could be a missed opportunity. Several attendees came new to
the various CMSes and were searching for the right system. Not having a
chance to talk individually with everyone, I would want someone, from
across the room, to be able to quickly glance over to where I am and
cleary see "Plone" on my shirt. I want them to see "Plone" and know how
to spell "Plone" so they can later search for "Plone". This is
important. I want someone who has never heard of "plone" nor ever heard
someone say the name "plone" to be given the spelling for "Plone". The
Plone logo is fine but I don't think it is universally known as the
plone logo outside of the plone/cms communities, especially to people
new to Plone/CMSes; try searching for "Plone" as compared to doing an
image search for "circle with three blue dots".

I'm not saying that all shirts from now on should have Plone in REALLY
BIG LETTERS. Just if your purpose or the event's purpose is to introduce
Plone to new people make sure they can read Plone from across the room.

that, but what you may not know is that there exists a Certified Public

Taxes and saving you the Expat a lot of money did you know that as an expat
you are entitled to more than $91,000 dollars in earned income tax

losing money that the IRS is willing to let you keep for being a US expat.

<pre>Hi all,

Glad to see the chatter on events for this year! PyCon is in Atlanta again
and we're hoping to see you here! Last year we were able get a booth for
free and I'm wondering if folks on this list are planning to come and would
help at the booth. It was a great place to hang out and have community last
year (and we tagged every Plonista's badge with the Plone stickers too to
make it easier to "see" our community).

I just put in an inquiry about the booth availability (last year it only
took 6 weeks to get a response :P). Would love to make it happen if others
can help participate at it! Josh and Steve will likely participate in the
entire event and I'll be around some too.

If you're coming to Atlanta for the first time, feel free to ping me for
questions/guidance. It will be a great time of year to be here, especially
for all the folks who live in places where it will still be very cold in
March :).

Happy new year!

<pre>Hi,

First of all, thanks to everyone who answered the form.
According to these responses, we have a new date.

The World Plone Day 2011 will be held on 27/04/2011

With 78% of acceptance, it was the preferred date.
Second one was April 20th 2011 with 72% of acceptance.
But April 20th and April 13th were selected as a "Not Ok" date for 16,6%.

My next task is compile the suggestions and tips and share with you.

Thanks again and let´s start to make a great WPD.

<pre>Hi all,
After all the rush of events with the Plone Conference, Plone Symposium South America and the Neoplata Sprint, we now find ourselves in a state of having *no* events listed on plone.org! If anyone knows of any upcoming events, please can they add them. I've just added an expo we are going to this week.

WDP 2011 survey

<pre>Hi everybody,

Thanks for all messages about the new WPD Champion.
But now is time to work.

The first thing we need to do is choose a day for WPD 2011.

So I created a small survey that will help us to define the date and
collect ideas for next year.
Please take 5 minutes of your time to tell us your preferences and
thoughts about WPD.

http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/LJ5PCS5

This survey will be closed next Friday.

Thanks,

Andre Nogueira

<pre>The Caribbean Institute for Media and Communication (where I work) will be
awarding a prize to the top Multimedia Student.

Would it be way out there to have the award named the Plone award? The cost
to sponsor the award is USD$296. If you think this is a good idea and would
like to sponsor the award so that it gets named the "Plone award" let me
know.
