Kino-1.3.4 Not working Properly

Hi,
I have been using Kino for quite some time now. Recently I have found the
following problems with it:

1. In the 'Eport' portion, the 'MPEG" tab is non-functional- it is
completely dimmed.
2. An imported clip does not play properly in the Preview Window - it just
runs away to the end without any sound.

I have been to google, all over various websites including openSUSE, with
which I work on my laptop. Very many people, on various websites, have the
same problems as I but, to-date, no solutions have been forthcoming.

Could anyone help please?

Thanks & Regards

Importing them one by one will take forever (maybe longer).

Is there a way to bulk import a bunch of DV files into Kino?

Thank you

do you think Kino is the right tool?

sorta solved: "AVC Status: Unknown state" on recentkernels

Hello,
just for the record: kino-1.3.4 rebuilt against libdc1394 at
least fix the tape rewinding in capture mode -- this message
on console log still stays:

AVC Status: Unknown state

as well as somewhat weird control buttons behaviour (sort of
blinking and sporadic timer resets)
    *but*
at least the "rewind all the way back" works for me again :)

The breakage came after updating from a distribution branch
with 2.6.32 based kernel to the current one with 3.0.[68]
(there was at least one 2.6.32 out there packaged using the
former IEEE1394 stack back then).

Just in case, attaching the Gentoo patch for the bundled ffmpeg
to be built with v4l2 (since 2.6.38, see also debian #621996).

I'm considering re-training parents to use kdenlive but that's
rather a winter project, and legacy SMIL files are to be still
processable somehow...

Can I recover the dvgrab output for a clip if not savedwhen captured?

Guys,

I have completed my 54 tape capture with dvgrab resulting in 1206 clips and
656G of video. I have about 10 clips where I missed saving the dvgrab output and
I need to know if I can get that information back from the clips themselves?
The script I wrote saved the following dvgrab output:

"dcrv-2009.04.03_22-53-49.dv": 520.94 MiB 4552 frames timecode 00:02:32.23
date 2009.04.03 23:52:46
"dcrv-2009.04.04_00-54-15.dv": 814.02 MiB 7113 frames timecode 00:06:29.05
date 2009.03.16 14:02:13
"dcrv-2009.04.02_20-27-19.dv": 628.51 MiB 5492 frames timecode 00:09:32.13
date 2009.04.02 20:30:22
<snip>

I am creating a mysql table that will store the filename, size, frames,
timecode, date & time info and provide the ability to add descriptive
information about the clips as well as other fields for kid1, kid2, backup
location, etc....

I have one tape I captured and did NOT save this information. Is there
something in kino or another command line utility that can retrieve this
information from the captured clips? Thanks.

dvcont rewind - any way to tell when done other than looping on 'dvcont status' exit status?

Dan, All,

dvcont works fine, but it certainly isn't serial in processing commands. From
the man page, 'dvcont <command1> [ <command2> ... ]', I thought 'dvcont rewind
eject' would rewind -- then eject. But when I saw the tape eject immediately, I
knew that was a no-go.

It seems simple "hey dummy, just look at the camcorder", but the camcorder is
hooked to a remote box and dvgrab/dvcont operations are done over ssh so knowing
when the rewind is done is something more than just looking at the camcorder.
What I've done is just run dvcont status and check for the "Winding reverse" or
"Winding stop" status to determine when the rewind completes:

(stat=$(dvcont status); while [[ $stat != "Winding stop" ]]; do sleep 10;
stat=$(dvcont status); done)

Works fine, but if there is an easier way, I'd appreciate a suggestion. Thanks.

dvgrab starts play, but stays stuck "Waiting for DV...", no data is actually captured - how to check?

Guys,

I am having a problem with dvgrab not downloading data to disk from my
Digital8 camera, even though dvgrab can always properly control the camera. This
problem only occurs sometimes on my first call to dvgrab. I then usually just
have to kill dvgrab, unplug/re-plug the firewire cable and start dvgrab again.
It works fine then.

The firewire connection is always seen on plug-in:

Sep 24 21:21:18 archangel kernel: [2111415.165895] firewire_core: phy config:
card 0, new root=ffc1, gap_count=5

fw1: GUID 08004601017ede99, S100, 1 config ROM retries

As mentioned, the camera is always found and dvgrab can ALWAYS control it
(rewind, play, etc..) The problem I'm dealing with is when dvgrab starts 'play'
to begin the capture - sometimes there is no capture, nothing recorded to disk,
even though dvgrab has started the 'play' mode on the camera just fine. I watch
the indication on the camera and play begins and the tape counter on the camera
starts increasing normally, but dvgrab is still "Waiting for DV..."

The indication I get on whether there is a successful download started is
that dvgrab issues the "Capture Started" message when download begins. For the
times when the camera is put in play mode and nothing is downloaded, dvgrab just
sits there with the "Waiting for DV..." message (even though dvgrab has rewound
the tape and started the camera playing). In either case, dvgrab will play
though the entire tape before exiting... (roughly an hour +- 5 minutes)

I am using the following command line to start dvgrab. I just echo the date
so I have a reference for when I started the download so I know to check back in
an hour to switch tapes and start it again. (the first "Capture Started" message
is mine from the CLI [poor choice of words]) The second "Capture Started"
message is the one issued by dvgrab. I run dvgrab in a subshell so that any
error messages from the dvgrab stderr stream are logged in the correct order and
don't get intertwined with any messages from the tee stderr stream (not that
I've ever had any from tee). The download/no download issue occurs regardless of
whether you run dvgrab in a subshell.

10:37 archangel:/dat_e/dv/new> (echo -e "\nCapture Started: $(date '+%b %e

I need to find a way to test for the successful "Capture Started" from within
a BASH script to make sure I haven't started dvgrab to just waste an hour
playing the tape with nothing captured to disk. One thing I guess I could do is
to wait for 3-4 minutes after starting dvgrab and then check for the "Capture
Started" message -- but frankly, I'm unclear how I would do that from within a
script since processing in the script is waiting for dvgrab to finish?? Any
ideas on how to do this would be welcomed. I don't know, maybe start a timer in
the script before the dvgrab call that waits 5 minutes, checks for the "Capture
Started" and if not found, kills the dvgrab PID and issues an error?? I'll have
to dig more into BASH to figure that one out. Any thoughts here welcomed :)

Anybody have any idea why dvgrab would rewind and start 'play' mode and still
be stuck "Waiting for DV..." and never get to the "Capture Started" point?

Can dvgrab '-rewind' work without a capture to rewind tape after successful dvgrab?

Guys,

First post - simple dvgrab question. (sorry if you get 2 copies, the first
was rejected by kino-dev-owner?) I have many digital 8 tapes to download. I am
writing a short script that will loop prompting for tape insert at the at the
end of each successful dvgrab. What I would like to do "rewind" the tape "after"
each dvgrab so the tape is left fully rewound. Is this possible without dvgrab
starting to download from the tape again using default capture values? I was
thinking something like:

while :; do

   [[ ${answer:0:1} == n ]] || break

if dvgrab -rewind -timestamp -autosplit=3600 -format raw ${VLOC}/${FNAME}; then

     ## Can I Rewind Here without another capture starting??
-> dvgrab -rewind (looks like this will restart capture with defaults)

     ## prompt for next or exit
echo -ne " Press: 'n' to process another tape, any other key to quit: "
     read answer
     echo ""

   fi

done

Currently, I find the -rewind option that says

"-rewind completely rewind the tape prior to capture"

What I want is something like:

"-rewind_done completely rewind the tape AFTER successful capture"

Anything like that exist or would that be a new addition to the code? If it
would be new, where in the code would be the best place to look to include this
functionality? Looks like it would need to be an addition of 'm_isRewindLast'
called from stopCapture() or cleanup() in dvgrab.cc, but I would appreciate any
help in figuring out how to implement it.

Thanks for any help you can give and I apologize of this has been previously
answered somewhere.

kino "crash" - looses monitor/X

Hi

Once in a while I edit some video on my arch (used to be ubuntu) laptop,
and when I do I use kino. Yesterday I started a new project, with about
30mins of video from my Canon HF200 (mts files converted to dv with
ffmpeg). Once in a while (every 10 mins or so) kino "crashed", meaning
the screen went black, and the external monitor lost its signal, but I
could hear the audio of the video still playing. I found no way to get
in contact with the laptop, so I had to do kill it with the power
button. I'm not sure exactly what I did at the time of the crash, but I
was doing alot of split/join scenes. Now I managed to get all the
splits/joins done, and kino seems stable again.

Any idea what could be going on here? Of course I'd be happy to supply
any info needed to investigate the problem!

NB: I just had the idea to ssh into the laptop from another laptop,
could give usefull info, plus possibly get the laptop going again
without the need for a hard reset, will report back if I get a crash,
and learn something over ssh...

NB2: This mailinglist seems very dead + the latest news on
http://www.kinodv.org/ is from 26.05.2010. Is the kino project dead?

I'm a GNOME translator and I made translations for Kino 1.3.4.

Please, can you accept that?

Firewire quits

Hi group -

I'm running Kino 1.3.4 on Ubuntu 10.10 and am having trouble importing
DV from my camcorder using firewire.

My Panasonic camcorder is recognized and the capture starts but then
quits after a minute or two. Also, after that the camcorder is no longer
recognized. Like it's forgotten. Computer needs to be rebooted and
then is seen again.

I have looked around the 'Net and seen comments from uses that say to
start Kino as root, and to use the pads command to start Kino, but it
doesn't seem to make any difference with this issue, though that has
helped the sound recording issue. It's odd that his just popped up
because everything was working fine two months ago. Or so I thought.

Happy to provide added spec info if needed.

Thanks in advance.

Hi all,

Is there a way to "shrink" AV files which have been created with Kino's
Export function.

I have video footage which, in raw format is about 5 Gb big although to
total time for the video is less than 30 minutes. The final product .AVI
file is then in excess of 5Gb in size. Too big to put on a normal 4.7Gb DVD.

Is there a way in Kino to "shrink" or compress the file so that it can
be fit on a DVD.

I'm new to this video think in Ubuntu and I have to compile short
video's (approx 30 to 45 minutes each) for a radio program.

Any help will be gratefully appreciated...

Kino - Freezes up

Hi there,

I'm new to Kino.

I installed the package and tried to run it.

I hooked up a Panasonic Camcorder and got it to recognise the camcorder
from Ubuntu - Kino

I used the capture facility and it seems to be recording well under
Ubuntu 10.04, however after 12 to 21 seconds of capturing the program
freezes up. I have to force a shutdown.

I need to get the video off the camcorder and onto the computer.

Any help welcome.
