(I do a lot of compositing with layers, so I don't really want it to track

made to the image.)

[Gimp-user] Gimp 2.8 + Brushes

<pre>Hello, my name is Alex Stegmann, and I've been using Gimp for sometime now.
It's a fantastic program, but I thought the area where it lacked the most
was the brushes. It only came with a few basic brushes, and you often had
to download extra packs for that something extra. This in itself wasn't a
huge deal, although if you had brush sets more like those of PaintTool SAI
or MyPaint, that would be really great. Those program don't have as much as
Gimp, but they have some really great brushes, which makes them fun to draw
in.

My bigger concerns is adding your own brushes to Gimp via imported brush
packs. While you say you integrate all files, the brush manager is lacking.
If I wish to add a few brush packs to see what they do, the brush list
quickly becomes clogged. You can't seem to delete brushes without going
back into the brushes folder which you first put them in, and then delete
the files. This also means if you like a few brushes in a pack, but the
rest of it is useless to you, then you have to have everything, or nothing.

There is a lot to be desired in terms of the brushes, and I hope you can
improve these soon. I stand by Gimp, even though people often call it a
watered down version of Photoshop, but Gimp 2.8 has been a huge
disappointment for me.

On a final note, when choosing a new brush, especially for the animated
texture brushes you include, I think it would be useful if you
automatically went to the brushes native size. This saves time and energy,
especially if you are testing out new brushes. MyPaint has this feature,
and I have found it incredibly useful. This also means I can just click the
brush a second time to reset it to the default settings.

I would very much like to see Gimp become an essential piece of software on
every digital artists computer, but for now it seems to be trailing behind.

[Gimp-user] Is there a feature for showing masks as an overlay and a command to see the layer underneath my current one?

<pre>I'm not sure if this is the right place for asking questions, but I figured
it's better than asking in the developer mailing list.
*
*
*1. Is there a "show quick mask" feature for showing masks?*
*
*

I know Gimp has a "*Show quick mask*" feature which shows what you have
(and haven't) selected by displaying a red overlay over your image,
allowing you to add to or subtract from a selection by using the
paintbrush, but I haven't found a similar feature for showing masks.

Photoshop has this feature (it's called 'reveal mask' I think) and it
basically just shows a red overlay of your mask on your image so that,
similar to the quick mask feature in Gimp, you can see where you have and
haven't masked through.

(I don't own Photoshop so I'm not sure if the red overlay shows the opacity
with which you've masked through or whether or not you can edit the mask
when it's being shown as a red overlay.)

*2. Is there a command for showing the layer underneath the current layer
I'm working on?*
*
*

This is another feature that I've seen Photoshop has that is helpful for
blending multiple exposures (and lots of things, really).

Basically it's just a keyboard shortcut for showing the layer underneath
your current when you hold down a certain keyboard command (it's not
something you toggle since it's meant for quickly viewing what's on the
layer underneath your current one).

I know I can press space bar to show or hide the layer I'm currently
working on, but I can't do that unless I focus into the layers dialogue
first. It'd be nice if I could activate that functionality from anywhere,
regardless of whether I'm focused on the layers dialogue.

* * *
Do either of these features exist in Gimp?

If not, where can I make suggestions about them?

*Disclosure: neither of these are original ideas from me. I saw these
features when watching a video of someone using Photoshop and then wondered
if I could do the same thing in Gimp. *

Is there a way to turn that off (or revert it to the 2.6 way)?

[Gimp-user] The only problem with default brushes/resources . . .

<pre>
... is that you can't edit them.
I don't mean it quite the way it sounds, but it's something I've noticed ever since GIMP 2.2 that has repeatedly been an annoyance to my individual workflow. And minor annoyances are worse over time than major ones.

For example: When you're using the Paintbrush or Pencil tool (with a standard brush) you have a button to select a brush from the Brushes dialog, and you have a button nearby to Edit that brush. However, the Brush Editor won't let you actually DO anything as long as you're using a default brush, because as a default resource that brush is read only.

The same thing applies with Brush Dynamics. By moving them out of the tool context into their own 'resource' type, 2.8 loses the ability to make arbitrary edits on an impromptu basis. I can't, say, adjust the pressure curve on the default Pressure-Opacity setting because, as a default resource, you can't edit it. At all.

Of course, there's an easy workaround to the current behavior: Take a default resource and Duplicate it. Then you can fine-tune its settings however you want. I did this back in GIMP 2.4 - I created two standard brushes (with differing hardness values) solely so I could set up keyboard shortcuts to increase/decrease brush size on the fly. (During 2.6 I retweaked my keyboard shortcuts to affect the brush scalar, for the same end result; size is a moot point in 2.8 with brush size being part of the tool context, but it can still occur with other brush settings, like hardness).

But the issue definitely comes up with editing Brush Dynamics now that they have been made an official resource type. It's ... roughly like if you opened an image from a read-only XCF file and GIMP insists you Duplicate the image before allowing you to make any edits to the image whatsoever. (Okay, so that's an exaggeration.) I know, the change was deliberate, but from the user view it's still a loss of convenience and functionality -- a regression. If I want to adjust the pressure curve on a Dynamic, I first have to ensure that I'm working on an editable copy of it and not one of the defaults.

So I'm going to toss out some ideas to discuss:

1 - If a default resource is selected, the matching Editor dialog (Brushes editor, Dynamics editor, etc.) should have a "Duplicate" button on its own dialog. This would save the extra click of having to bring up a different dialog and hit the button from there.

2 - Better yet, instead of locking down all the Editor's controls, have GIMP give you a prompt asking if you want to Duplicate the resource first (or even do that automatically) when you try to tweak its settings. This would save one more click over idea #1 - you couldn't make it any easier than that.

3 - Or can you? Maybe the default resources to be edited under the condition that those changes can't be saved/overwritten back to the original (read only) file. (Much like being able to make edits to a read-only XCF file; sure you can edit, you just can't overwrite the original file with those changes.) Also provide a "Revert" button which would refresh the resource back to its original state (like the "Reset" buttons on any number of adjustment tools).

4 - Or, if all else fails, have the GIMP distribution include one of each type resource (well, at least one Brush and one Dynamic) which are installed in the respective user resources folder (rather than the default resources folder, which is marked read-only). This keeps all the default set of resources, but adds one of each that the user may adjust at their whim.

Thoughts on the matter?

[Gimp-user] Problem with Windows Gimp 2.8 and Cage tool

<pre>Hello everybody,

First mail to this list, I hope this is the correct place to ask this!

I've installed the Gimp 2.8 Windows version suggested in the official site
but I cannot run the cage tool. After making the grid it quickly show a
progress circle saying "calculating coefficients" (or something like that,
since I'm using it in spanish), then "transform grid" and then it hangs up
(and closes gimp) saying:

Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library
Runtime Error! This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it
in an unusual way.

I've checked the installer wasn't corrupt and I've installed it in two
different computers (both having Windows Xp SP3). I think I have more than
enough free memory, so probably the problem is in my Visual C++ libraries.
At least I have installed the Visual C++ 2008 and 2010 Redistributable
libraries to no avail.

Is the cage tool working in the windows version? Should I install something
to make it work?

Thanks in advance for your help! Regards,
Koko.

<pre>Fedora 17 is available as a pre release (which I'm running with no
problems) and GIMP is available from the Fedora repo and I haven't had
any problems with it (yet).

[Gimp-user] Mode layer? [was: Calm and rational Save/Exportworkflow report ; )]

<pre>
Hmm - pending further geglization, would something like a "mode layer"
be feasible? IE, a layer with options corresponding to the
Image-&gt;Mode menu items?

For example I could add a "mode layer" of type "indexed" with 1-bit
and threshold options and every visible layer underneath would be
converted for preview, and exported as 1-bit. Not only would that let
me take advantage of the new save/export behavior, but it would be
useful in its own right: I could tweak the underlying gray/color
layers and watch the changes to the 1-bit image in "real time" or just
toggle the layer on/off to switch between views.

Just a random thought :)

Chris

<pre>I own a Wacom Pen &amp; Touch tablet. I use the PEN capabilities extensively, and I'm happy with it; but still have not found any use for the TOUCH part.

Does anybody here use the TOUCH functions? How?
Many thanks!

<pre>i have a question, imaging im in terrible hurry to draw an empty circle around a text and go on for others, whats the fastest way???

something like this: http://up.vatandownload.com/images/vgv2kprqm8bckk6yfhy.jpg

i already know some ways, for example: using "Border" (in Select menu) or "Stroke Selection" (in Edit menu)
i want the "fastest way", those two ways need too many delays.

my teacher read the book fast and i should draw as fast as him.

thank you all in advance
