noob: Pythonxy vs Spyder and startup questions/confusion

<pre>So I've installed pythonxy and there's a shortcut to pythonxy that
brings up a "Python(x,y) Home" window that I really don't understand
what it's for.(?) It looks like some sort of option gui. I'm not
sure where the doc on this window is.

To actually "do" python, I end up opening up Spyder directly (from its
installed shortcut in my Windows Start/programs list). I don't know
if that's the right thing to do (?)
It then does a bunch of importing. I think it uses the ...\\xy
\startups\default.py script to do the importing but I'm not sure(?)
and I don't know how I would find out(?)

BTW, what's the best way, in spyder, to find out what modules have
been imported?

add a link to the "major" release on the Download area

<pre>Dear maintainer of the python(x,y) wiki,

Although it would seem quite basic to experienced pythong(x,y) users that
one should go into the link to the Mirrors for downloading the major
releases (such as Python(x,y)-2.7.3.0.exe&lt;http://ftp.ntua.gr/pub/devel/pythonxy/Python(x,y)-2.7.3.0.exe&gt;)
for installation, for beginners it was not obvious at all. It is intuitive
for newbies to assume that the link provided on the top of the download
area (e.g., Python(x,y)-2.7.3.1.exe&lt;http://ftp.ntua.gr/pub/devel/pythonxy/Python(x,y)-2.7.3.1.exe&gt;)
would be the one for installation from fresh, and after the error message
says that it depends on the major release, it takes some efforts to figure
out where to find it.

Perhaps there is a reason to not put a direct link to the major release on
the download area, but I really think that information would be quite
helpful and convenient, at least for beginners.

Cheers,

Python(x,y) Launcher Missing Applications and Plugins - partial workaround

<pre>When I recently switched from a previous version of Python(x,y) to the
current version, the Python(x,y) launcher seemed to "break."

Here's the things that appeared to be missing

 - Nothing but Scite in the Applications list
 - Python Modules window is completely empty, switching categories
 doesn't do anything
 - Installed Plugins list contains SciTE, Console, mingw, swig, xydoc,
(and unum, which I installed with the optional plugins installer

I realized that I'm getting good enough with Python I could probably find
the problem myself, and I think I did.

In xyhome.pyw, a list of applications is hard coded, then each application
is checked for validity. It is checked against a list of plugins created
in config.py, and the site_packages directory.

The plugins list is apparently generated based on the "Software\Python(x,y)\uninstall"
registry key, which is supposed to contain references to all installed
plugins. Apparently though, hunting through the registry shows that most of
the python modules got their own registry entries at the Software level,
and only separate programs like Scite, Console, mingw, swig, etc. were
listed under Python(x,y) in the registry.

I decided that I don't really care about what's in the registry and that as
long as the site_packages folder is present, that's good enough for me, so
I changed line 276 in xyhome.pyw from this:

if (PLUGINS.has_key(app) or app=='IDLE') and osp.exists(infos[0][1][0]):

to this:

if osp.exists(infos[0][1][0]):

I'm not sure how to fix the plugins list issue - seems like the installer
must be either putting registry keys in the wrong place, or the xy.config
code needs to updated to look for them in the new location.

Just thought I'd post this in case it helps others or helps the developers
for future versions. It's always possible my installation is somehow wonky
and I've simply made a workaround for my own problem.

Accessing cblas in pythonxy

<pre>Hi,

I have a project that includes a cython script which in turn does some
direct access to a couple of cblas functions.
This is necessary, since some matrix multiplications need to be done inside
a tight loop that gets called thousands of times.
Speedup wrt calling scipy.linalg.blas.cblas routines is 10x to 20x.

Now, all this is very nice on linux where the setup script can assure that
the cython code gets linked with the atlas dynamic library, which is the
same library that numpy and scipy link to on this platform.

However, I now have trouble in providing easy ways to use my project in
windows. Python(x,y) for windows 32 ships cython (OK) and the mingw
compiler (OK). Furthermore numpy and scipy appear to use atlas as their
blas implementation (at least this is what one can guess by looking at the
strings in _dotblas.pyd). However, there is no stand alone atlas .lib and
.dll file. I do not have tons of experience in the windows platform, but I
guess that atlas is statically linked in numpy and scipy. Is this the case?

Missing a standalone set of atlas libraries, my current solution is to ship
with my code a pre-built atlas from
http://www.netlib.org/atlas/archives/windows/ but I would really not like
to duplicate something that is already in python(x,y).

Any clue? Could python(x,y) move to providing an atlas implementation that
is directly usable from cython or when otherwise extending python from C?

Many thanks for any advice!

I'm not sure how best to add them to the list of packages Spyder imports by
default? Is sitecustomize.py the right way to do this? How does Spyder
(and the other Python(X,Y) applications) import matplotlib etc?

Thanks,
Tom
