OpenOffice.org lists are going away

To all my friends and colleagues on these documentation lists:

Effective March 15th, all OO.o email addresses and lists are going away.
That includes these two < at >documentation lists, of which I am a co-owner
and moderator.

If you are using an < at >openoffice.org address anywhere (wiki, Bugzilla,
Apache lists, forums, ...), then you need to change it there. The
current email forwarding will be discontinued.

The best way to keep up with documentation matters is through the
ODFAuthors site and ML's. The Apache podling does not yet have a
separate list for documentation; if and when it does, I will pass the
word on odfauthors-discuss.

Hail and farewell!

Dear OpenOffice,

I'm seriously considering switching to OpenOffice, but the biggest problem
I need to tackle is to learn how to use the full functionality of Excel
I've been using. I was really happy to see that there is a manual in
PDF<http://documentation.openoffice.org/HOW_TO/various_topics/VbaStarBasicXref.pdf>,
but it's 7.5 years old. Is there a newer manual or website concerning this
case, or is there an effort to do one? Or is this up-to-date?
I think the biggest obstacle is this compatibility case, and the most
information should be given to solve this. Most users are using Excel, and
they're asking, OK, I heard about this new software, what do I need to do,
to be able to use it? A collection of the most important differences would
be really useful.

Open Office got me through college, and now it gets my development team

Someday soon I'd like to donate resources, but until then I can offer my

can write documentation for either platform. Please let me know if you
would like any help with this.

Thanks, and happy new year!

AOO How-tos

Similar to my note about the FAQs, there is a collection of how-tos on
the OOo wiki. These also need to be checked to see if they are out of
date.
http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/Documentation/How_Tos

That page is also a good place to check if you're thinking of writing
a how-to; perhaps it already exists.

What other how-to's or FAQs do you think are needed? You can either
just write one (no need for permission) or make a proposal if you'd
like to discuss it before charging ahead. Some coordination is a good
thing, as long as it doesn't mean everyone talks about what we
"should" do and never actually does any of it. :-)

In fact, I suggest people have a wander around the Docs wiki to get a
feel for what's there. Note that we stopped providing a wiki version
of the user guides because there weren't enough people to keep them up
to date... but that does not dictate what we do in the future. But
this is one of those topic areas that really needs discussion IMO, and
that discussion belongs on the ooo-dev list at Apache.

FAQs for AOO

There are quite a lot of existing FAQs on the OOo wiki. Someone was
organising and sorting them and (I think) working through them doing
updates. (I have no idea if that someone is still around.) Anyone
wanting to work on FAQs should probably become familiar with what's
already there (at least in one of the topic areas) and either continue
the work or make a counter proposal. This is a typical page, showing a
prominent "this may be out of date" notice:
http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/Documentation/FAQ/Writer
I don't know how many pages have that or a similar notice, or now many
should have that notice but don't. I've not paid much attention to the
FAQs.

Further discussion about this work should take place on the ooo-dev
list at Apache (or at least copied there). dev< at >docs will be going
away, and there may be people interested in FAQs that aren't on
ODFAuthors, because FAQs have not been handled there for some years.

accessed through this link:

One of the steps provided in the above mentioned article, is to gain
experience by contributing to orgaizations such as, "Open Office". As an
aspiring technical writer as well as a fan of the services that this
company provides to the public free of charge, I would be very grateful for
anything I can do to contribute.

Here is a little about myself: I graduated from the University of Kentucky
in 2008 with a B.A. in English. I would love to further my craft as a

Thank you for reading this, and I hope to hear from you soon!

*

Good day,

I have one of your web pages open [
http://contributing.openoffice.org/writing.html] and writing to introduce
myself. I am would like to see how I may offer assistance with the 'User
Guide for Open Office.org'

I have worked on many projects such as this, as proof/edit contributor. I
use OpenOffice.org suite but there is much still to learn and feel this
could also be an opportunity to become better acquainted with the
applications.

I also have an interest in teaching classes locally if this is acceptable.
I would like for others to appreciate a choice, outside of the Microsoft
umbrella.

thank you,

Lani Narducci

Dear,

I'm interested in getting some experience in writing tutorials and/or user
guides and I wondered if there could be an opporunity with OpenOffice?
Please let me know what sort of tasks are available and how I might be able
to contribute. I'm a native English speaker.

Best,
Jacqueline
