--------------------------------------------------------------
Sorry for the cross post from the Zenpacks forum.

I am running Zenoss 4.2.3 and all was working fantastically until I tried to install the MySQL Zenpack. It did not install correctly and now it does not remove correctly and I can't get Zenoss to restart with it in this kind of half installed half not mode.

When I run the zenpack remove command I get the the following error:

[zenoss< at >zenoss ~]$ zenpack --remove ZenPacks.zenoss.MySqlMonitor
ERROR:zen.ZenPackCmd:zenpack command failed
Traceback (most recent call last):

  File "/opt/zenoss/Products/ZenRelations/ToManyContRelationship.py", line 206, in _getOb
    return self._objects[id].__of__(self)
AttributeError: 'ZenPack' object has no attribute '__of__'

Is there a more manual way for stripping the Zenpack out? There is nothing dependant on it and there are no devices using it since it never did install correctly.

I have successfully installed several of the Juniper and Riverbed Zenpacks already and they are up and running, this is the only issue.

In the state I am in now, Zenoss will not start.

Any assistance you may be able to offer would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Joe

Hi everyone, I have some multi-graph reports that show individual lines for each interface I've added to the collection (example attached).
What I actually want is for all the values at each timestamp to be cumulated together and shown like that. For example, if I had 2 interfaces being measured at 12:00pm and one reported 1Mbps while the other 2Mbps for that timestamp....rather than me seeing 1 point at 1Mbps and another at 2Mbps, I want a single point at 3Mbps instead.
I'm sure this is possible....I just don't know how.

Any help appreciated as always :)

I have recently switched over to a new domain controller. Now I keep getting could not read the Windows event log and services error in Zenoss. The domain controllers is setup the same way as the old one. I have tried to change the username and password for it and still doesn't work with another username or password. I have checked the COM+ security and added the group that the account is in and still not able to read windows service or event log. Is there somewhere else I'm missing or I can look?

--------------------------------------------------------------
I'm trying to use JSON/Python API to create a new event
I'm using the documentation (ZenossAPIExample) to create a new event (create_event_on_device)

Up to this point it's working and I am able to create a new event,
The problem is I don't understand how to use the data returns to manage the event,

For example, the return code is:

{u'uuid': u'b8791acb-b6f9-4071-b065-9c26e36acd45', u'tid': 1, u'result': {u'msg'
: u'Created event', u'success': True}, u'action': u'EventsRouter', u'type': u'rp
c', u'method': u'add_event'}

My questions:

1. Is there any way to get the "Event ID" in the return call?
2. What is the "u'uuid'" used for?

All event actions (Acknowledge, close, add note etc..) requires the event ID and I'm trying to sync Zenoss with 3rd party events.

System:
Zenoss: 4.2.3
OS: CentOS 6.4

Any suggestions?

Thanks

"ValueChangeThreshold - warning"

To view the discussion, visit: http://community.zenoss.org/message/73268#73268

--------------------------------------------------------------
The ValueChangeThreshold is a recent development that arrived (I believe) with Zenoss 4.2. Rather than the administrator having to create a template that checks a MAX and/or a MIN value, this standard template simply checks that the value has "changed" from the last sampling interval.

It is deployed as standard on the ethernetCsmacd and ethernetCsmacd_64 component templates on the ifOperStatusChange threshold. It is configured to generate a /Status/Perf event when the the value changes, of severity Info.

http://community.zenoss.org/servlet/JiveServlet/showImage/2-73268-15581/ifOperStatusChange_ValueChangeThreshold.jpg  http://community.zenoss.org/servlet/JiveServlet/downloadImage/2-73268-15581/450-205/ifOperStatusChange_ValueChangeThreshold.jpg

The /Status/Perf Zenoss-supplied event has a transform that checks that a component attribute exists and that the eventKey field matches with the ifOperStatusChange threshold for the ifOperStatus_ifOperStatus datapoint. If these criteria are met then the *event action is set to drop*.
Next the status value from the event is compared with the status for this interface in the Zope configuration Database (ZODB). If the two are different then the ZODB value is set to match the status detected by the event.

http://community.zenoss.org/servlet/JiveServlet/showImage/2-73268-15582/Status_Perf_transform.jpg  http://community.zenoss.org/servlet/JiveServlet/downloadImage/2-73268-15582/450-272/Status_Perf_transform.jpg

zenperfsnmp polls the SNMP OID ifOperStatus every 5 minutes (by default). Possible values for the operational status (defined in the RFC-1213 MIB and IF-MIB) are: * 1 Up
* 2     Down
* 3     Testing
* 4     Unknown
* 5     Dormant
* 6     notPresent
* 7     lowerLayerDown

Unfortunately the ValueChangeThreshold threshold type is not a reliable source of events for interfaces. This is because other daemons and processes in Zenoss can reset the previous value (strictly the template threshold instance is recreated). This happens:
* When zenmodeler changes a relevant object
* When any other script (such as an interface monitor / unmonitor script) changes a relevant object in the ZODB database
* When an event transform changes the status of an interface (as in the transform above)
* When the template or object are manipulated by the zendmd testing environment
* When zenping detects an interface change
* When the performance template is changed
The result is a spurious event that changes the value from a previous value of “None” to the current value. This means that “real” events (eg. changes from Up to Down), may become masked and hence this whole ValueChangeThreshold technique is unreliable.

If an interface changes from Up to Down then zenping (which runs every minute) is more likely to see the interface down before the zenperfsnmp daemon sees it. zenping changes the status in the ZODB database and a new threshold instance for the ifOperStatusChange threshold, is pushed to the relevant collector (typically the Zenoss server in a Core environment); this new template instance generates an event saying that the status has changed from None to the new status (2 if the interface has gone down) and the "lastValue" of this threshold is set to the new status of down (2).

At some later stage, the threshold is checked - the value is still down so the ValueChangeThreshold does not fire, even though the last time that zenperfsnmp checked this threshold, the value was 1 (up).

I have tried dropping or closing values that change from None to something - this doesn't help. The other changes (like zenping) still create a new template instance and still change the lastValue in that template. The other issue is that if you drop good news events from None to 1 (up) then the bad news never gets closed by the template. The last Value has been set to 1 (up) so the threshold sees no change. Further, any "good news" events that don't match a "bad news" event are always silently dropped (standard behaviour, irrelevant whether it is a ValueChangeThreshold event).

After struggling for some time with this quirky behaviour (because it is all time-dependent) I have come to the conclusion that for interfaces at least, you are much safer sticking with the MaxMin threshold.

Cheers,
Jane

ZenOss 4.2.3 running on RHEL5.

We have a 2-server Exchange 2007 environment. Setting the CAS/Hub server up with WMI monitoring was a snap, and the better event logging is keeping us busy but in a good way. Not so much with the mailbox server. No matter what server class we set it up with, even just /Server/Windows, still it's logging constantly like this:
Could not read the Windows event log (ExecNotificationQuery on HOSTNAME.domainname.example (WBEM_E_ACCESS_DENIED)). Check your username/password settings and verify network connectivity.

As mentioned earlier, we've tried using all the different classes within the /Server/Windows tree and all result the same. Further, I've verified that the domain account we use for WMI query activity is a local admin on the Mailbox server.

Here are the steps I performed using wbemtest:
* Logged in to the mailbox server using the WMI query domain account from a remote machine.
* Issued the following query to enumerate all the event logs:* Select * from Win32_NTEventLogFile

* For each event log returned from the above query, I issued a test query to get any events as follows:
* Select * from Win32_NTLogEvent Where Logfile = 'Filename'
* eg Select * from Win32_NTLogEvent Where Logfile = 'Security'

It's worth noting that I did not get WBEM_E_ACCESS_DENIED from any of the above queries. Since the mailbox server is configured to all intents and purposes the same way as the CAS/Hub box I'm at a loss to explain what's failing or why.

Is there any way to test the actual query Zenoss is running to find out why it's failing?

In Multi-graph reports, edit a graph report mode only displays 40 graphs (first 40), however it lets you continue to add more than 40 graphs, and the "view report" does show all graphs you entered. My problem is I need to delete a graph after 40th and I can't see it. Does anyone have a way to delete a graph from the database? or other method? Thanks. -Kevin

Hello All,

Maybe I missed something, but today I have been unable to download this Zenpack: ZenPacks.zenoss.WindowsMonitor

A few months ago, I was successfully able to install it using the zenpack --fetch method. Now that just sits there for a few seconds and then returns to the prompt. No errors or anything
zenpack --fetch ZenPacks.zenoss.WindowsMonitor

Very strange, I can't seem to find a download of it anywhere. I've used this command "zenpack --fetch ZenPacks.zenoss.WindowsMonitor" many many times

It looks like the url I used before doesn't work anymore either, http://zenpacks.zenoss.com/pypi/eggs/none/ZenPacks.zenoss.WindowsMonitor-1.0.5-py2.7.egg http://zenpacks.zenoss.com/pypi/eggs/none/ZenPacks.zenoss.WindowsMonitor-1.0.5-py2.7.egg

What am I missing? I looked on the wiki and couldn't find a download for it!

Stuck on Zenoss 3.1.0 for now, lately my collectors have started failing to fetch zencommand and zenjmx config where these commands in data sources depend on a zProperty that is unchanged and inherited from the device type e.g. /Server/Oracle and not instantiated in the device level e.g. /Server/Oracle/devices/device_name. This used to work for ages but presumably some now untraceable change to the system has cased this to start happening every day.

The result when this exception happens is all commands for the device are deleted from the collection schedule of the device with coresponding "Deleting command" logs in the collector's zencommand.log. Usually a restart of the central hub and the collector will restore the commands for a while only to be deleted again when each collector next runs what I presume is a config cycle.

*Here is an example of the log lines in zenhub.log when zencommands fail:*

Would anyone be kind enough to share how they've managed to monitor their MS SQL database(s)? I currently have a MS SQL 2005 server I'd like to monitor!

I have the device under /Server/Windows/WMI/MSSQLServer and the graphs for CPU Utilization, Memory Utilization, Memory Paging, and Paging File Usage are displaying nicely BUT the SQL based graphs are empty (MS SQL- Buffer Manager, MS SQL-User Connections, MS SQL-Lock rates, etc.).

I didn't see anything in the Configuration Properties where I could set-up monitoring of the database like I would with MySQL databases so I started searching for help and I've seen users install the MsSQLMon, RDBMS, and SQLDataSource Zenpacks which I have done so successfully. I also have the zenperfsql daemon running. Now I see a zMsSqlConnectionString and zMsSqlSrvInstances in the Configuration Properties.

So my question is where do I go from here? Do I have to add a local template or was it even necessary for me to install those additional zenpacks?

--------------------------------------------------------------
I appear to have accidentally created a copy of an RRD Template (copy_of_CiscoTemperatureSensor) which I am unable to remove/delete from within the Zenoss or Zope interfaces. Zenoss is version 4.2.3

In Zenoss, under Advanced > Monitoring Templates, when I select the template, I get the following error: "AttributeError: deviceClass"

http://community.zenoss.org/servlet/JiveServlet/showImage/2-73215-15556/zenoss.err.png  http://community.zenoss.org/servlet/JiveServlet/downloadImage/2-73215-15556/292-314/zenoss.err.png

In Zope, at /zport/dmd/Devices/Network/Switch/Cisco/rrdTemplates, I see the template. However selecting is and clicking Delete produces the following error:

Type: <class 'zExceptions.BadRequest'>
Value: copy_of_CiscoTemperatureSensor does not exist
Traceback (most recent call last): File "/opt/zenoss/lib/python/ZPublisher/Publish.py", line 126, in publish request, bind=1) File "/opt/zenoss/lib/python/ZPublisher/mapply.py", line 77, in mapply if debug is not None: return debug(object,args,context) File "/opt/zenoss/lib/python/ZPublisher/Publish.py", line 46, in call_object result=apply(object,args) # Type s<cr> to step into published object. Some googling suggests trying such things as restarting Zope, restarting Zenoss, enter in zendmd and reindex()'ing -- all to no avail. Interesingly, I am able to "See" the RRD Template in zendmd, but I am not sure how I can delete it from within the CLI.

    d = dmd.Devices.Network.Switch.Cisco
     d.rrdTemplates()
    [<RRDTemplate at /zport/dmd/Devices/Network/Switch/Cisco/rrdTemplates/copy_of_CiscoTemperatureSensor>]

My questions are:

1. +Can+ I delete this phantom template from within zendmd? If so, how?
2. Is there any documentation of the zendmd environment? It seems very useful, but incredibly vast.

Hi All,

Does anyone know how I can tell how many instances of zencommand are currently set to run? I found a link that showed me how to change the number, http://community.zenoss.org/docs/DOC-2521 http://community.zenoss.org/docs/DOC-2521 but I don't know what the current number is..

We're having performance issues when we go over a certain threshold of zencommand operations and I want to know how to resolve it without resorting to another collector.

I want to increase the number of instances of zencommand running if possible. The above link says I can do this in $ZENHOME/etc/zencommand.conf by adding a line like this.

parallel        5

Any ideas would be really welcome,

Thanks,
Joan

Hi all,

I'm in the process of attempting to upgrade 4.2.0 to 4.2.3 using the autodeploy script when it shows me this:

It appears that the distro-supplied version of MySQL is at least partially installed,
or a prior installation attempt failed.

Please remove these packages, as well as their dependencies (often postfix), and then
retry this script:

MySQL-shared-5.5.28-1.linux2.6.x86_64
MySQL-server-5.5.28-1.linux2.6.x86_64
MySQL-client-5.5.28-1.linux2.6.x86_64

My current Zenoss is running without issue now, I don't think it's wise to blow away my existing MySQL to satisfy this script. Help?

Thanks!

Hi there,

I'm running Zenoss Core 4.2.3. I've got notifications set up for when something pings down, but I'd like to get more information than what's there by default. Is there a way to include Serial Number and/or Comments of the device (found on the Overview page for the device) in a notification?

I haven't seen any discussion of this type of thing, but is there a way, within a single server node, to monitor secondary devices: for example, a server with aps or switches behind it, or, for another example, a public-facing load balancer like a peplink with a server behind it. I'd like to monitor this type of system as a single node. I can see how to do it as separate nodes, but that doesn't consoldiate them in a single unit.

I am graphing the response time of routers using a monitoring template

/bin/ping -n -q -c 3 ${device/manageIp} | sed -n -e '/loss/p' -e '/rtt/p' | sed -e 's/\(.*\),.*\+[0-9].*duplicates\(.*\)/\1\2/' | sed -e 's/.*\([0-9].*.% packet loss\).*/PING OK|loss=\1/;s/[0-9] received//;s/%//;s/, //;s/packet loss//' -e 's/rtt min\/avg\/max\/mdev = /min=/;s/ ms//;s/\// avg=/;s/\// max=/;s/\// mdev=/' | sed '/$$/ {;N;s/\n//}'

Now I would like to create a custom report that will display the average response time of all of my devices. How do I reference this data point in my report?
