Research Assistant/Staff Scientist: Technology in Environmental Health (Boston, MA)

<pre>Research Assistant/Staff Scientist: Technology in Environmental
Health (Silent Spring Institute; Boston, MA)

Silent Spring Institute is a non-profit scientific research group studying
the environment and health. We are a multi-disciplinary team and
international leader in research on everyday exposures to
hormone disruptors, tests for breast carcinogens, and environmental links
to breast cancer. We lead collaborative research teams that include
top computer scientists, statisticians, and other scientists at
Brown, Harvard, UC Berkeley, and elsewhere. We seek a research assistant
or staff scientist with experience in computer science, data analysis,
or mathematics and an interest in applying these skills to
environmental health research.

The new researcher will work on projects that combine
technology, environmental health science, and social science. For
example, researchers nationally are struggling to develop meaningful ways to
report to study participants on the levels of emerging
contaminants detected in their own body or home. Our unique team of
environmental health scientists, social scientists, and human-computer
interaction experts is designing a digital interface that we expect will
become the standard for reporting results in biomonitoring and
exposure studies. We will first develop and test the interface for
reporting personal pesticide exposures to residents of Boston public
housing.

Responsibilities: This position requires versatility in support of
the Institute’s transdisciplinary research. It reports to the
executive director and affords a bird’s-eye-view of research in human
computer interaction, environmental health science, and community
engaged research.

Examples of activities:
*Help design an interactive digital reporting system for
personal environmental exposures.
*Conduct data management and statistical analyses using R.
*Help create computational systems to assess privacy risks in environmental
health data.
*Develop an Adroid app to tell shoppers about health-related chemicals in
cleaners and personal care products.
*Opportunities to author peer-reviewed articles.
*Support proposal preparation for federal and foundation grants.
*Help research team keep apprised of new technology, research news
and policy developments.
*Some travel. Some evening and weekend responsibilities at public events.

Requirements: We seek applicants with outstanding academic and technical
skills and commitment to advancing environmental public health. Applicants
with a bachelors or graduate-level degree will be
considered. Excellent academic record; computer science,
mathematics, biochemistry/biology, and social science coursework an
asset. Programming experience, especially in R or Java, and relevant
work experience preferred. Creativity, attention to accuracy, ability
to work independently within a multidisciplinary team. Commitment
to careful and impartial research in a context of partnership
between scientists and the public. For more information, visit our web site
at www.silentspring.org and www.silentspring.org/about-us/employment.

To apply: send cover letter describing your interests and
experience related to this job, resume, writing sample, and copy of
academic transcript (photocopy is fine) to Diane Czwakiel,
Administrative Manager, Silent Spring Institute, 29 Crafts Street, Newton,
MA 02458 or email careers-C5LQQz6gJrYWnkcawLe0jOG/Ez6ZCGd0&lt; at &gt;public.gmane.org

Data Scientist and 'Data Management Guru' positions available in the heart of Austin, Texas

<pre>== About Us:

Oceanus is a boutique software and analytics company. We address some of
the most difficult and strategic issues in the automotive industry such as
how to launch electric vehicles, and how social media will change car
ownership. We are profitable, doubling each year, compensate well, and
have great benefits -- including beer on tap.

Our culture is important to us. We make decisions on three simple values:

== Brand: Make our customers, employees and partners love us. We bring
start-up enthusiasm, speed, and innovation to the enterprise. We solve
hard problems, we are agile, we keep it simple, and we over-deliver.

Growth: Doubling each year is hard, but interesting--we have to completely
change the problems we are tackling and how we approach them. Growth is
the challenge that excites us to come into work and allows us to hire and
retain the best people.

Fun. Life is too short to hate your job. We have the luxury of picking
what we work on, and we choose what motivates us. Work will sometimes be
work, but we try to minimize suck. We have a relaxed, collaborative
environment. We celebrate our successes, and sometimes, we just celebrate.

Responsibilities:

== Data Management Guru Responsibilities:

Our business is built on understanding our customers' data more deeply than
they do. We have a broad range of web, behavioral, descriptive, financial,
and operational data on consumers, companies, and dealers in the automotive
industry. Nearly every Oceanus project involves integrating heterogeneous,
unstructured data, making sense of it with little help, mining it for
insights, and applying it in novel ways to solve business problems.

As our business doubles every year, the complexity of our data warehouse
grows even faster.

We need you to make data management an ever-greater differentiator for
Oceanus by:

Maintaining our dozens of data sources and import schedules and processes
to deliver 100% reliability and integrity, even in the face of poor-quality
source data

Applying innovation, intelligence, and heuristic approaches to our ETL
rather than standard, fixed brute-force rules

Continuously enhancing our technology platform and toolsets as new problems
arise: building and buying when appropriate

Becoming a subject matter expert in the data itself, to apply better
semantic checks and structure the data more intelligently than anyone else
could

Building an agile version management and production release process for data

Ensuring our data warehouse scales appropriately as our data sets grow

Working with our customers to help them develop more agile internal data
management processes

We use a range of tools and technologies: SQL Server, Oracle, bash, Perl,
Python, SQL, Informatica, etc. We are looking for someone who has a deep
understanding of ETL concepts but is not just a DBA or ETL developer, who
is not wedded to any particular toolkit, and who is comfortable with
programming, algorithmic thinking, automated testing, and pushing the
envelope on agile database development and process automation. This
position is perfect for a data junkie with a development bent.

== Data Management Guru Requirements:

Bachelor's degree in CS, or equivalent experience.

At least 2 years of work history managing complex data sets with novel,
fault-tolerant approaches. (Significantly more compensation is available
for those with deeper experience.)

Track record of success in using diverse technologies and approaches to
manage data in an extremely dynamic environment.

Comfort with and commitment to being our technology lead in a critical area
of our business.

== Data Scientist Responsibilities:

Our Data Scientists do everything from data prep to data mining and
statistical analysis to business presentation. They are pivotal to our
projects from start to finish, developing the entire path from business
problem statement to data-driven solution recommendation. Data scientists
need to be good at both asking the right questions and finding creative,
technically rigorous answers.

Oceanus Data scientists work with detailed data that describes the inner
workings of the automotive industry: consumer web-browsing and purchase
information, customer demographics and psychographics, vehicle production
and delivery specs and schedules, vehicle sales performance and history,
incentives, repair information, dealership operations, etc. They dream up
and answer big questions: What makes some dealerships more successful than
others? How much sales lift comes from incentives? What kind of marketing
is effective? What mix of product packages and features should be
manufactured? How many will sell? Who is likely to buy an electric car?

We don't specialize in particular algorithms or modeling approaches -- we
are always learning and looking for the best approach to the problem at
hand. The best candidates will have both exceptional technical/statistical
skills and strong business acumen, and be interested in fast-paced work and
varied responsibilities. They will be knowledgeable and capable enough to
find a way to leverage data to answer nearly any automotive business
question, choosing their own analytical approaches and owning project
results. (Though there is an opportunity to transition less complex work
to offshore teams.) They'll be excited to present results that could
change the way businesses operate, and able to present those simply and
clearly, in terms that businesspeople understand.

== Data Scientist Requirements:

Graduate degree or equivalent in CS, statistics, econometrics, operations
research, math, or a related field.

Deep knowledge of at least one statistical analysis tool (preferably R or
SPSS) and Microsoft Office for presentation.

At least 2 years of work history in data analysis, with a track record of
successful application of diverse analytical approaches (including but not
limited to regression modeling, time series analysis, and decision trees.)

Programming skills, including ability for sophisticated automated data prep
through SQL and at least one other language, and ability to build reusable
analytical tools from scratch.

Ability and drive to work quickly and deliver new insights and incremental
results on a daily basis.

For a good example of the pragmatic work style and approach to problem
solving that we value, see Jeremy Howard’s video at

The Diabetes Epidemiology Group at the University of Dundee Medical Research Institute is seeking a skilled programmer to interface with software developers in the various teams from whom we source data.
The Group is at the cutting edge of exploiting large scale data including, electronic health records and large genetic datasets, to lead to advances in disease prevention and medical treatments.
Examples of the sort of work we do include using large scale data on drug prescribing linked with hospitalisation data to detect and quantify adverse reactions to drugs used in diabetes care.
Other examples are using large genome wide genotype data linked with clinical data to understand the genetics of complications of diabetes.

This post provides a great opportunity for an enthusiastic programmer to develop core expertise in this rapidly expanding field.
Such expertise was recently identified as being of growing strategic importance for UK science by the Medical Research Council (http://www.mrc.ac.uk/Utilities/Documentrecord/index.htm?d=MRC007896)
and one where there will be many future job opportunities.

We are seeking a person with good programming skills to provide a key link between the source of our raw data and the analytics team.
Our data can come from many different sources in different formats and has often had minimal cleaning or processing before we receive it.
The data providers often provide it as flat files though are moving to holding data on ORACLE, Netezza and other platforms.
Our analytics team comprises machine learning specialists, biostatisticians and epidemiologists.
Key attributes are good interpersonal skills and an ability to communicate clearly, experience with a relational database management package such as MySQL and familiarity with the LINUX environment.
The appointee should have a sound understanding of good code documentation practices and tools.

The principal responsibilities of the post are:

 * Continue development of our current database (now MySQL but you can migrate to another platform if needed) to create a local front end for analysis
 * Integrate data held in various formats and coming from various platforms
 * Implement structures and metadata to support data definition, quality definition and data transformation from a variety of information sources
 * Process the data to a state ready for subsequent analysis using a language such as PYTHON, PERL or other and write it back to the database for use by the analytic team who work in R, MATLAB , SAS STATA
 * Work with the analytic team to improve analytic efficiency such as by re-writing some R Functions in a lower level language such as C or by parallelising the code or application
 * Work with the analytic team to ensure data flows and data version control are adequately documented and that data analysis code and functions common to different projects are organised in shared libraries
 * Work with the analytic team to ensure appropriate sharing of tools and methods across specific projects and to set up the necessary systems to facilitate this

For more experienced applicants we also envisage a leadership role that involves

 * establishing operational policies on data processing and data security across the team
 * being the point of communication between the University IT support and the Diabetes Epidemiology group and to represent the group in any IT and computing related discussions across the University
 * providing advice on investment in software and hardware within the group
 * participating in the recruitment, management and appraisal of the programming team as it expands
