Hi all,

I want to build Qtmoko for the Freerunner GTA02 on my laptop using
Ubuntu Precise Pangolin 12.04 64-bit.

I followed the instructions on [1]. I have problems to get
libmpfr.so.1 installed. The program "getlibs" is not anymore available
on [2] so I tried it from [3]. But I get the message:

- --------------------------------
~$ sudo ./getlibs -l libmpfr.so.1
No match for libmpfr.so.1

If I try to continue without this library, I get the following error
(verbose mode in the target section):

Nevertheless I get the same error, that "libmpfr.so.1" can't be found.

It would be great if somebody can give me a hint, what else I can do
to solve this problem.

Thanks in advance and Greetings, Carsten

server update

<pre>Dear Community

(Here comes an overdue update...)

Harald, with help from Roh and Gismo, has been updating /
consolidating our server infrastructure and will soon migrate to
modern hardware.

I'm working on transferring the openmoko.org trademark and domain
ownership to a recognized non-profit entity in the Free Software
community. This is an important step that we've wanted to do for some
time. More details will follow.

In the meantime, we're actively looking for a volunteer with strong
sysadmin skills to continue to maintain the infrastructure after these
changes. The basic setup will consist of debian systems with apache,
lighttpd, mediawiki, trac, svn, git, exim, mailman, cyrus-imapd,
openvz, vsftpd and munin. If anyone is interested, please contact
myself and Harald off-list.

Finally, I want to give a personal thanks to Roh and Gismo for all
their work keeping our infrastructure alive.

ideas for a personal cluster with gta04

<pre>In the spirit of the recent ideas threads here, I'd like to share my
ideas that I would like to achieve with the gta04, as part of a larger
system. I wrote it in an article format, and it isn't finished, but
nothing ever is. So here goes.

** introduction
I'm interested in free client - server clusters, with wearable nodes,
and laptop nodes.

Free software is pretty strong server side, but somewhat weaker on the
client, especially small systems such as phones. It should be possible
to leverage the server side strength on the client machines.

Since a server is part of the equation, complexity can be offloaded there.

The idea is somewhat like an instance of the Google or Apple
stack, but personal, running on your own servers, and geared towards
making it possible for you to do what you want rather than generating
ad revenue streams.

** concretely
Okay, so what does that mumbo-jumbo translate to in practice?
Concretely I'm working on a Puppet server manifest, that describes all
the services one might want to use on the server, and matching client
software that runs on the phone and/or laptop.

Since the point is that you should not need weeks to set all this up,
I make concrete choices. These will not appeal to everyone, but are of
course open for discussion.

*** flatrate 3G/4G
The internet connection is assumed to be flatrate. It's pretty cheap
here in Sweden anyway. The connection must of course still be assumed
to be intermittent.

*** Fedora
I'm used to Fedora, so I will use that for a base operating
system.

*** Puppet
Puppet handles the configuration. Puppet can be used on most
distributions.

*** Nagios
Nagios is used for monitoring, so a competetive uptime can be
achieved.

*** Single sign on
The personal cluster consists of many different services. To make them
more integrated, the 389 ldap server is used to provide a shared user
database, and the different services are configured to authenticate
against the 389 instance.

*** Dovecot IMAPD
Mail is important to the personal cluster. Dovecot is a good imapd. It
is lightweight, yet featureful.

*** mapping/location data
open streetmap maps.
A gpsd on the client feeds the cluster with location data.

*** instant messaging
irc clients on the laptop or phone uses the server as gateway to other
systems. Bitlbee is used for the proxy. znc fronts bitlbee, which
handles the connections and logging.

*** social networks
A private diaspora instance is used as mediator.

*** voip
linphone is used on the client, and asterisk on the server.

*** camera
All photos are uploaded to the server, and things like bar code
scanning etc. can be made server side.

*** woodchuck
Woodchuck is a system to handle a mobile cache, when the connection to
the cluster is down.
http://hssl.cs.jhu.edu/~neal/woodchuck/

*** server side transcoding
many media formats on the web are not really suitable for mobile
applications. The personal cluster handles this by downloading and
transcoding the media server side, and then making it accessible to
the client.

Phone wakes up after being powered off

<pre>Hello kind members of Openmoko mailing list,

I'm suffering from a very bizarre wake up problem related to the Neo
Freerunner phone.

The phone wakes itself up after being powered off a few hours later
(e.g. if I shut the phone off before going to bed when I wake up the
phone is already switched on).

I thought at first this was a hardware problem related to the battery,
but this doesn't seem to be the case as it has happened on two different
phones after setting reminders in the QtMoko calendar (using v26).

Unfortunately, even after removing the reminders the phone still wakes
itself up. I'm wondering if it is possible to clear all data causing the
phone to wake up.

Thanks,

Alon.

<pre>Hi all!

I'm currently doing distribution upgrades on a number of the
openmoko.org servers, so please expect service outages here and there.

Yesterday there was already an upgrade of downloads.openmoko.org,
including the ftp, http and rsync servie there. Also, some non-public
machines like the monitoring system have been upgraded.

Right now www.openmoko.org and wiki.openmoko.org are facing some upgrade
related downtime.

For now, I'm not touching the git and email/imap/mailinglist setup for
the time being, so the most essential communications medium (mailing
lists) will not be affected at all.

I documented the hacky scripts that I wrote yesterday to do this in the

<pre>So I am trying to format (Flash?) my Freerunner and put Qi (Bootloader) and
SHR (OS) onto NAND. I've downloaded the ubifs image from the SHR website.

What I am curious about is: Why isn't there a fancy program that does all
this for me!? :) JK

What I am really curious about is: Is the bootloader included in the ubifs
image? I have a feeling it's a separate file.
Is there a specific order I should flash? Right now, Android installed on
the NAND. Do I need to remove this, or should the "flashing" process take
care of this for me? I would like to replace the Android OS completely.

No such thing as too much detail, I appreciate any response.
Thanks,
Travis

problems with qtmoko continuously re-starting

<pre>hi all,
i broke the screen on my freerunner a while back (although it still
displayed, and the touch part sort of worked), and put a new one in
last week, bought from a seller on ebay.

i booted the freerunner up, and the screen appeared to work fine, boot
text was moving across the screen. however, when qtmoko started, the
timer thing in the centre of the screen stayed on, and then qtmoko
restarted. then it restarted again, and again, and again. i ran top
via ssh from my laptop, and cpu for qpe is very high all the time.

so, i uninstalled and purged qtmoko, then reinstalled (v.44-1). same
thing again.

any suggestions what to do? i've checked the connections on the screen
and they are fine. i wonder if it's anything to do with the
calibration of the touchpad? is there anyway to manually edit it, i.e.
a .conf file somewhere?

cheers,

<pre>Hi guys, I'm using SHR (last build) on NAND and QTMoko on SD and when I
connect my FR to my Arch Linux box, I can't get a new network interface to
ping/ssh to. This happens on Arch, in Ubuntu the interface is created
without problems

Do you know how to fix this?

Thanks in advance

<pre>Oops forgot to change the subject.

I'm trying to figure out how to download and install Neotools. When I go
the this link http://users.on.net/~antisol/neotool. It goes to what look
like the code?

I read somewhere that I can copy this to Gedit and use some terminal
commands to install it.

Am I missing something?

QtMoko's new keyboard

<pre>Hi,
while there was discussion about hw keyboard, i was working on software
onscreen keyboard with simple goal: implement the best onscreen keyboard in
the world.

I think i am now very close ;-) The key is to have as big buttons as possible.
Here is picture and video of how it looks now:

http://activationrecord.net/radekp/pub/keyboard.png
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fyN7wS66y_I

It still needs some more work, but it's currently very usable and i am really
happy how it works. E.g. the video was taken with N900 in my left hand and
still with the SMS layout i made no mistake.

My plan for now is to finish it up and remove all those 5!! QtMoko input
methods in favour of this one. I can make installable packages of the old
methods if anyone is interested. This should be part of v45. For v46 i can try
to implement customizable layouts and unicode characters.

*.openmoko.org infrastructure

<pre>Hello,

There was considerable tension in the community lately regarding the
Openmoko community resources, namely docs.openmoko.org ,
wiki.openwoko.org , svn.openmoko.org , people.openmoko.org .

The problem is that not only the servers were unstable and apparently
required a kick every now and then but also that there's no clearly
visible contact person and the whole situation regarding the resources
is causing honest concern and inconvenience in community.

Right at the moment svn.openmoko.org and docs.openmoko.org are still
inaccessible (since weeks) and nobody really knows how to proceed.

For the community to be able to deduce a way to manage this situation
i would like to ask everybody involved to clarify these questions:

1. Who owns the servers and who pays which bills? How to get a proxy
or transfer the responsibility for the openmoko.org domain and
infrastructure to other person in case the original owner becomes
unavailable? Whom can you propose to take this role?

2. Who actually has admin credentials, is supposed to care about
things like server outages, and what is the suggested procedure to
contact that person? Is there a proxy for this position? How to
transfer the credentials to another person in case the original
maintainer becomes unavailable?

3. What is the practical and reliable way to do administrative tasks
like e.g. obtaining the dump of the wiki and docs.openmoko.org
bugtracker database?

4. What suggestions do you have to improve the status quo?

Thanks in advance for your replies and commitment.

Sincerely,
Paul Fertser

Qtmoko - previous versions?

<pre>Hi radek, qtmoko people,

Is there any place where we can find previous qtmoko images for freeruner? I've
noticed some regressions/instability in v44 that I'm unable to debug now. So
just to have it back as a daily useful device I would like to downgrade a bit :)

I have no intention to stop trying and reporting issues for future versions.
It's just time to run a stable image and have it backup'ed properly before new
adventures.

[ANN] GTA04 Keyboard prototype

<pre>Hi,

we have developed a prototype for a 80 button QWERTY keyboard PCB
that could eventually be connected/integrated into the GTA04. It should fit
into a specially designed battery cover so that you can easily stow it away
if not needed. Such battery covers could be produced individually through
3D printing solving the issue of manageing and stocking 20 different key
layouts.

But watch yourself how we think it can look like:

http://youtu.be/WM94%5fR5eKcc

There is also a new video showing a comparison with some other keyboards:

http://youtu.be/wGASnE1zGh4

Pleas tell us if you like this idea and what you would like to pay for such an
extension unit through the Wishlist function of our shop:

http://www.handheld-linux.com/wiki.php?page=GTA04%3AKeyboard

Two issues are still to be developed:

a) how to reliably connect it to the GTA04 PCB (soldering copper wires or a
FFCs is a little difficult so it should have a tiny, flexible but robust B2B cable).

Maybe, we can use a micro-USB socket or similar (we need to connect 6 wires).
This may also need a redesign of the GTA04 board (for a nice plug)

b) design a 3D printable case with key-caps that is robust enough

If you want to support us for developing this idea, please give us a kickstart
donation.

PS: the keyboard driver for the TCA8418 is already part of Linux 3.3 - and has
been backported to the 2.6.32-kernel. This has been tested to work on a
BeagleBoard XM.

http://git.goldelico.com/?p=gta04-kernel.git;a=commit;h=f19d5c430458bbce8955bc9e04dd161f6a80347d

It just needs platform data in the board file:

<pre>Hi.

I want to come in Berlin from May 23th to 26th at LinuxTag.
I don't speak German (at all).

Maybe the community can help.

Moreover,

if someone is ever interested in giving courses to help me start with GTA04 development
let him raise his hand !!!

This will be retributed.

I've got knowledge with C / C++ / linux, but none with this device.

Waiting to hear from you,
