[CsMain] Google Summer of Code: Students Announced!

Hi all,

Yesterday the accepted students for Google Summer of Code 2012
were announced. As it is the case every year it is always unfortunate that
we have
to reject so many good students but that's how this program works. However,
seven
students got lucky this time (well, perhaps that has to be seen :-) and got
accepted
for Crystal Space. Here are the seven students and their projects:

   - Naman Gupta: Improving support for Water Bodies (mentor Frank Richter)
   - RlyDontKnow: Extending the Deferred Render Manager (mentor Alexandru
   Voicu)
   - Andrei Bârsan: Extensions to the cseditor framework (mentor Jorrit
   Tyberghein)
   - Domi: Improved physics in Crystal Space with Bullet (mentor Christian
   Van Brussel)
   - Sam Devlin: Updating Behaviour Trees, Recast&Detour and the Life-Sime
   Demo (mentor Anthony Legrand)
   - Steel Style: Lighter2 improvements (mentor Mohit Taneja)
   - Touko: VFSv2: Modular and Extensible Redesign of VFS (mentor weltall)

Welcome to these students and hopefully they can deliver some really nice
work and
hopefully we (the mentors) can provide them with a comfortable environment
in which
they can do their work.

I expect all accepted students to get into contact with their mentors as
soon as possible.
Preferably this communication should occur on the crystal-develop mailing
list.

For all the rejected students, better luck next time!

Greetings,

[CsMain] csfxFadeTo() behind the meshes

Hello Crystalspace team,
For a game, I need to display an overlay texture above everything else
on the screen, with variable opacity. I found the function csfxFadeTo()
in walktest (F6 command). I wanted to try it in a minimal code example,
so took the Simple1 tuto. It works well, the texture is actually
displayed, but unlike in walktest :

- this csfxFadeTo() texture is on the background (I mean behind all
meshes) instead of the foreground. Any idea on how to set it above any
mesh? Or maybe some advice about another way for such overlay feature?

I just added the csfxFadeTo() call and some minimal code to get a
iTextureHandler for the parameter. The texture is well dispayed, apart
from this z-order problem. - CS v1.4.0, Visual c++ 2008, Windows 7

Thanks in advance !
-
Christophe

[CsMain] Proposal: A monthly CS dev IRC meeting

Hi all,

RlyDontKnow brought up a good point about how we talk and how we
interact with the community.

We do not interact well enough and we can make it better. While we would
like people to use the mailing lists for discussion for decision making,
we could have regular IRC meetings for those who prefer talking there.

This being the case. I would like to propose a monthly IRC meeting. This
would be hosted by an 'operator' and all subjects to be discussed would
be pre outlined on the CS site (a page to be developed).

Your thoughts?

Regards

Phil

[CsMain] World Editors

Hello,

I'm at the stage where I would like to start editing a giant world like Asheron's Call or World of Warcraft. Are there free recommended world editing tools out there, or is this someplace where I can contribute to CrystalSpace? I have always had it in me to write a 3d world editor since the beginning of coding in CS back in 2003. I knew down the line I'd eventually be there, but first I wanted to write my core networked fighter(which I did).
Questions:

1) Are there any free to use World Editors that could do a WOW style map with cliffs and valleys?
2) If not, are there anyone else who wants to join me in making a CrystalSpace World Editor?
and an off chance:

3) Anyone know any artists or 3d modelers who want to work on a World Editor or a MMO in general?

,Jim

I could not find the header file where iPolygonMesh is defined.
I think it required igeom/polymesh.h before, but igeom/polymesh.h is no longer present in this version of CS

Where is it located now?

[CsMain] A Compile question or 2.

Hello,

My old computer got a virus, so I
needed to reinstall windows. I lost all my old CrystalSpace build and
Mingw. So I needed to update. Some things aren't updating friendly.

I have two projects I wrote. One is my animation maker tool. It compiled and loaded up fine!

The other is my shell(the game). The shell has a compile error due to upgrading to new version of MingW or C++ or something.

The errors are:
simpmap.cpp:1560:96: error: expected primary-expression before ')' token
simpmap.cpp:1560:96: error: 'CS_LOAD_PLUGIN' was not declared in this scope

The code is:
    ThingType= (CS_QUERY_PLUGIN_CLASS (plugin_mgr,"crystalspace.mesh.object.thing",iMeshObjectType));

    if (!ThingType)
line 1560:ThingType=CS_LOAD_PLUGIN(plugin_mgr,"crystalspace.mesh.object.thing",iMeshObjectType);

//What do you think my syntax should be here

--------------------------------------------------------------

Question #2:

Which syntax should I use:

1 //csRef<iPluginManager> plugmgr (CS_QUERY_REGISTRY (object_reg, iPluginManager));
or
2 //csRef<iPluginManager> plugin_mgr =  csQueryRegistry<iPluginManager> (object_reg) ;

I can't get 1 to compile, and 2 is just something I lifted off the web, it could be old

Hello,

I was crazyjim on IRC, but since I got a virus using MIRC, I won't use it anymore unless I get a Linux computer again.

I was just saying I'm back to development with Crystal Space :) I'm making video games with TangerinePop.com, but I felt like I had a lot of hobby time, and I'll be working on my MMO as sort of a life project.

I have a multiplayer fighter engine coded right now. What I need to do now is actually just be creative and create 10 fighters. Once I database in the fighters, I need to create a ladder system and menus to publish as a mini-indie game. It is 6 months minimum out and it is highly unlikely I'll get it done in that quick.

I have a new outlook on the game. I don't just want it to be done, I want to be developing :)

I'm looking for 3d modelers/artists as always.

My latest video blog entry on Ares. Watch it in HD and bigger size for best
quality.

I appreciate the 'likes' on youtube! :-)

A few disclaimers:

- AresEd is work in progress. There are still bugs and the user interface
could be better.
- My microphone isn't good. Sound quality is not that good.
- The video encoder I used apparently caused a choppy framerate. AresEd
runs much smoother in reality.
- I cut away a part in the middle where something wasn't working properly
:-)

[CsMain] New official Blender exporter for CS

Along with the upcoming V2.0 release, a new exporter add-on for Blender
has been added recently to the CS repository. This becomes the official
script for exporting Blender files of the 2.6x series and above into
Crystal Space.

This script is a joined effort between the teams of Peragro Tempus and the
Université catholique de Louvain, with mainly the work of Anthony and
SueastSide, thanks to them!

This script is available in both the trunk and the 2.0 CS branches, under
the directory 'CS/scripts/blender'. You can find the manual pages here:
- V2.0: http://www.crystalspace3d.org/docs/online/manual-2.0/Blender.html
- trunk: http://www.crystalspace3d.org/docs/online/manual/Blender.html

The script has support for the main objects of CS, i.e. mostly the
genmeshes, animeshes, world and library files. It has not yet support for
portals, although this should be added in the next days.

This script is in Beta version, so please test and report any problems you
may have.

Regards,
Christian

Sorry we have yet to push out the 2.0 RC1. We have issues and last

will will announce a release of RC1 very soon. Please be patient and
allow us to smooth things out to give you the best RC we can.
