GNU Generic Security Service 1.0.2 released

<pre>GSSLib is an implementation of the Generic Security Service Application
Program Interface (GSS-API). GSS-API is used by network applications to
implement security services. For example, an application can use GSS to
authenticate a user against a SMTP or IMAP server for sending or
receiving e-mail. GSS consists of a library, a manual, and a command
line tool for debugging purposes.

Noteworthy changes since the last version:

** gss/api.h: Added RFC 5587 const typedefs.
The new types are gss_const_buffer_t, gss_const_channel_bindings_t,
gss_const_ctx_id_t, gss_const_cred_id_t, gss_const_name_t,
gss_const_OID, and gss_const_OID_set.

** gss/api.h, gss/ext.h: Moved RFC 6339 functions from ext.h to api.h.
The functions gss_oid_equal, gss_encapsulate_token, and
gss_decapsulate_token are now standardized. The types have changed
slightly to used RFC 5587 const types instead. This does not affect
the ABI and doesn't modify any semantics: the functions did not modify
the non-const parameters before.

** i18n: Translations were updated.

** build: Update gnulib files. Several QA bug fixes.

** API and ABI modifications.
gss_oid_equal:
gss_encapsulate_token:
gss_decapsulate_token: See above.

There is a known problem building this release on MinGW with MSVC as the
compiler, fortunately there is a workaround available -- please see
https://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/help-libtasn1/2011-11/msg00001.html
for more information.

While written to be flexible with regards to different GSS mechanisms,
the only currently supported mechanism is Kerberos V5 via GNU Shishi.
Mutual and non-mutual authentication and channel bindings, as client
and server, is supported. Message privacy protection using DES and
3DES is supported.

GSS aims to be internationalized, thread safe and portable. GSS is
written in ANSI/ISO C89, and has been ported to numerous platforms, even
cross compiled to embedded platforms such as Motorola Coldfire.

GSS is a GNU project, and is licensed under the GNU General Public
License version 3 or later.

Improving GSS is costly, but you can help! We are looking for
organizations that find GSS useful and wish to contribute back. You can
contribute by reporting bugs, improve the software, or donate money or
equipment.

Commercial support contracts for GSS are available, and they help
finance continued maintenance. Simon Josefsson Datakonsult AB, a
Stockholm based privately held company, is currently funding GSS
maintenance. We are always looking for interesting development
projects.

Bug#621627: gss: Getting rid of unneeded *.la / emptyingdependency_libs

<pre>Package: gss
Severity: normal
User: codehelp&lt; at &gt;debian.org
Usertags: la-file-removal

To finish an old release goal from Squeeze, to comply with Policy
10.2 and to ease the introduction of MultiArch, I'm filing bugs
against packages which contain .la files which can be either removed
or stripped of the dependency_libs variable.

http://wiki.debian.org/ReleaseGoals/LAFileRemoval

http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2011/04/msg00055.html

http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2011/04/msg00199.html

Data has been obtained from the output of an automated script:

http://release.debian.org/~aba/la/current.txt

The output is best read in conjunction with the criteria from this
post to debian-devel:

http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2009/08/msg00808.html

To generate the list of packages, I've used:

grep -v depended-on current.txt |cut -d: -f1

The data is regularly updated but please accept my apologies if you
have made an upload which changes the situation since the data was
parsed.

gss appears in this list as a source package because one or more of
the binary packages (usually -dev packages) contain .la files.

In most cases, the .la file(s) can simply be removed as the process
behind this MBF has already identified that there are no further
dependencies using the .la file. In the unusual case that your
package uses libltdl directly, it is still necessary to empty the
dependency_libs part of all .la files remaining in the package. Once
gss is fixed, the process will repeat and other packages which you
maintain may need to be fixed in turn. It is important that packages
are fixed in sequence to avoid FTBFS bugs.

If you believe that your package needs both the .la file and the
dependency_libs settings, please raise this on debian-devel for
clarification.

libgss-dev ships a libtool la file. According to [1] it can simply be
removed since it is not refered to from other packages.
Straightforward patch attached.

Hello GSS-Helpers,

i installed libgss using the following configure flags:

./configure --with-gnu-ld --with-libiconv-prefix=/usr/local/lib
- --with-libintl-prefix=/usr/local/lib

After that i tried to compile postgresql-8.4.4 with gss enabled and i
got the following error message:

libgss is available:

ldconfig -v | grep gss
        libgss.so.1 -&gt; libgss.so.1.1.0

but there is no gssapi.h header installed. Instead the following headers
were installed under /usr/local/include/gss:

- - api.h
- - ext.h

Did i do something wrong during compiling GSS or is there something i
forgot?
I dont understand why postgresql need gssapi.h but gss just installed me
the above mentioned headers. Is it an gss or postgres failure?

Regards

Markus

Library for Generic Security Services
The GNU Generic Security Service Library (GSSLib) is a free
implementation of the GSS-API security framework. GSSLib uses Shishi
to implement the Kerberos V5 mechanism, but is flexible enough to
support other mechanisms too.
.
This package contains the GSS library.
Changes: gss (1.0.0-1) unstable; urgency=low
.
  [ Simon Josefsson ]
  * New upstream version.
    - Breaks backwards compatibility, libgss1 renamed to libgss3.
  * Switch to dpkg-source 3.0 (quilt) format.
    - Patches and README.source removed (fixed upstream
      using --with-po-suffix).
.
  [ Russ Allbery ]
  * Update watch file to point to ftp.gnu.org instead of alpha.gnu.org.
  * Update debhelper compatibility level to V7.

Your package contains new components which requires manual editing of
the override file. It is ok otherwise, so please be patient. New
packages are usually added to the override file about once a week.

You may have gotten the distribution wrong. You'll get warnings above
if files already exist in other distributions.
