Problems with nautilus-connect-server.1:

List syntax error. This means .IP, .TP or .RS/.RE markup is garbled.
Common causes include .TP just before a section header, .TP entries
with tags but no bodies, and mandoc lists with no trailing .El.
These confuse doclifter, and may also mess up stricter man-page
browsers like Xman and Rosetta.

Nautilus missing feature - issues with samba4

<pre>Hi,

Samba4 does not have NetBIOS integration, therefore, the domain
cotroller will not be visible on the network. Especially with Gnome3,
the address bar has been removed from nautilus, therefore it becomes
impossible to connect to a CIFS resource that is not broadcasting
itselft. I highly suggest the introduction of the addess bar in
nautilus.

As of right now, the only way to access the shares on samba4 is to
mount them from console, process that is unnatural when the GUI is meant
to facilitate the work. This would be a great adition to Gnome3 and
others would appreciate it for sure.

Thank you.

- Ability to browse subdirectories in Google Drive, if i try all that i

- Integration with Abiword and Gnumeric as Libreoffice is a bit bloated

Feature Request - GNOME Windows Buttons

<pre>Hello,

Forgive the possible noise.

I tried to use the archive search but it did not give me meaningful results
in fact it didn't give me results from this list at all, but google results.

I've searched for this solution but found none, except that nemo has been
forked from nautilus to provide dropped features.

The problem with going to nemo is loosing accessibility with gnome orca and
not having the wonderful features of nautilus.

I find the new interface to be so frustrating to be nearly useless. The
file listings and every feature work very well but I cannot minimize or
close the window without much effort.

I know that for some users the newer way of doing things is faster and more
efficient but for some remembering new shortcuts to close a window when ALL
the rest of the windows in GNOME can be closed by clicking the X in the
menu, is frustrating.

Could a setting be included in the next improvement to nautilus if it
doesn't already exist to allow nautilus to have the regular buttons that
everything else does if the user wishes to have them?

Other than that there is no reason to use anything else. Nautilus is
awesome and works very well for the blind user or visually impaired user.

no item in the "Open" menu for a "desktop" file with "NoDisplay=true"

<pre>Hi.

After upgrading Nautilus 3.6→3.8 the menu item "MPlayer Media Player"
disappeared from the context "Open" menu of Nautilus. A research has
showed that this is because "/usr/share/applications/mplayer.desktop"
has "NoDisplay=true". The specification
http://standards.freedesktop.org/desktop-entry-spec/desktop-entry-spec-latest.html
states: |{{{
NoDisplay| means "this application exists, but don't display it in the
menus". This can be useful to e.g. associate this application with MIME
types, so that it gets launched from a file manager (or other apps),
without having a menu entry for it (there are tons of good reasons for
this, including e.g. the |netscape -remote|, or |kfmclient openURL| kind
of stuff).
}}}
It states that "[a program] gets launched from a file manager". I agree
that "this application exists, but don't display it in the menus" is
confusing, because it *is* displayed in a menu --- in the context menu.
But we all understand this mistake, isn't it?

So, what do we do now? Ask to correct the mistake in the specification,
and, probably, revert the behavior of Nautilus to its previous state?

Running Nautilus form a custom path

<pre>Hi,

I've made some changes to nautilus-2.28.4 source (
http://hammurabi.acc.umu.se/pub/gnome/sources/nautilus/2.28/nautilus-2.28.4.tar.bz2),
and would like to install and run them from a custom path.

./configure --prefix=/custom/path/
make install

This does the trick for installing it in a different path, however I'm not
certain how to get the system to run it form there. I'm running CentOS
release 6.3 (Final).

Adding /custom/path to my $PATH doesn't seem to do the trick, as the
install has many other subfolders, i.e bin, etc, lib, libexec, share.

I'm guessing Centos is loading /usr/local/bin/nautilus regardless of what's
in the path anyway.

I'm asking because I'd like to release these changes across (many) multiple
machines, and installing this patch on each machine is not a feasible
solution.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Also, the bug report shows version 2.12.x although the reported bug exists

compact list view

<pre>Hello

I'm new to this list, this is my first post.
I have been a Linux and gnome user for many years, and quite happy at
that. Yesterday I upgraded my Ubuntu installation to 13.4
Of course I was aware of the recent changes in Nautilus but Ubuntu
12.10 did not bring the new version yet, so until today it was a bit
theoretical to me.
But now I am confronted with the new Nautilus: 'Files', and slightly in shock.

For me compact list view is the only view I have been using for years.
I find icon view chaotic, and list view OK when you have a small
number of files in a directory. Compact list view provides both
structure and overview, and does (did) so exclusively.

I have been reading the posts about this topic that have been made
somewhere about June/July last year. I must admit I find the arguments
against compact list view theoretical and even somewhat pedantic.

My first reaction was to try and simply use a different file manager,
like Marlin. But unfortunately this is not as easy as, say, configure
a new default browser.

although I like the changes to Nautilus in general this particular
change makes me want to stop using it. That is not good. I hope this
change could be reconsidered. The least thing that would sensible is
actually investigate how many people are (were) actually using compact
list view. The mailing list archives do not indicate such research
took place.

I Agree it is a good idea to remove clutter from software from time to
time, and re balance the features with the underlying concepts. But to
me compact list view was not clutter, but my favourite feature
(however conceptually awkward). Please bring it back, one way or
another.

Introducing Myself

<pre>Gentlemen

I wish to introduce myself to the team working together on the GNOME OS. I am not sure if this is the right place for that. My particular area of expertise is file system design and so I am interested to specialise in this area. I understand that Nautilus is the file management component of GNOME OS and if this is not the case, please direct me elsewhere.

My vision for GNOME is the best file system for any computer in the world for the individual. I am leaving Apple to join the GNOME effort because it is not possible to do anything on their Ipad and that is simply not good enough for the hardware type which holds the future for all of us. The move away from the PC to the ipad is fuelled by the tactile experience which, once sampled, it is not possible for Content Creators to return to the old environment, especially when working with text and photos, which is the dawn of electronic publishing.

I have in excess of 40 years experience at the highest level of systems design and wish to apply that to the problem of file system integration between a mouse type and a surface type environment and in particular to the photographic and publishing workflow. Initially I would like to stimulate the design team members with my unique perspective, being also an artist, writer and content creator for new media yet to be invented and deployed on operating systems now being considered.

If I fit in here, please let me know, or tell me to go somewhere else you might consider more appropriate.

best wishes

Biggest Fake Conference in Computer Science

<pre>We are researchers from different parts of the world and conducted a study on
the world’s biggest bogus computer science conference WORLDCOMP
( http://sites.google.com/site/worlddump1 ) organized by Prof. Hamid Arabnia
from University of Georgia, USA.

We submitted a fake paper to WORLDCOMP 2011 and again (the
same paper with a modified title) to WORLDCOMP 2012. This paper
had numerous fundamental mistakes. Sample statements from
that paper include:

(1). Binary logic is fuzzy logic and vice versa
(2). Pascal developed fuzzy logic
(3). Object oriented languages do not exhibit any polymorphism or inheritance
(4). TCP and IP are synonyms and are part of OSI model
(5). Distributed systems deal with only one computer
(6). Laptop is an example for a super computer
(7). Operating system is an example for computer hardware

Also, our paper did not express any conceptual meaning. However, it
was accepted both the times without any modifications (and without
any reviews) and we were invited to submit the final paper and a
payment of $500+ fee to present the paper. We decided to use the
fee for better purposes than making Prof. Hamid Arabnia (Chairman
of WORLDCOMP) rich. After that, we received few reminders from
WORLDCOMP to pay the fee but we never responded.

We MUST say that you should look at the above website if you have any thoughts
to submit a paper to WORLDCOMP. DBLP and other indexing agencies
have stopped indexing WORLDCOMP’s proceedings since 2011 due to its fakeness.
See http://www.informatik.uni-trier.de/~ley/db/conf/icai/index.html for of one of the
conferences of WORLDCOMP and notice that there is no listing after 2010. See
http://sites.google.com/site/dumpconf for comments from well-known researchers
about WORLDCOMP. If WORLDCOMP is not fake then why did DBLP suddenly stopped
listing the proceedings after?

The status of your WORLDCOMP papers can be changed from “scientific”
to “other” (i.e., junk or non-technical) at any time. See the comments
http://www.mail-archive.com/tccc&lt; at &gt;lists.cs.columbia.edu/msg05168.html
of a respected researcher on this. Better not to have a paper than
having it in WORLDCOMP and spoil the resume and peace of mind forever!

Our study revealed that WORLDCOMP is a money making business,
using University of Georgia mask, for Prof. Hamid Arabnia. He is throwing
out a small chunk of that money (around 20 dollars per paper published
in WORLDCOMP’s proceedings) to his puppet (Mr. Ashu Solo or A.M.G. Solo)
who publicizes WORLDCOMP and also defends it at various forums, using
fake/anonymous names. The puppet uses fake names and defames other conferences
to divert traffic to WORLDCOMP. He also makes anonymous phone calls and
threatens the critiques of WORLDCOMP (see Item 7 in Section 5 of
http://sites.google.com/site/dumpconf ).That is, the puppet does all
his best to get a maximum number of papers published at WORLDCOMP to
get more money into his (and Prof. Hamid Arabnia’s) pockets.

Monte Carlo Resort (the venue of WORLDCOMP until 2012) has refused to
provide the venue for WORLDCOMP’13 because of the fears of their image
being tarnished due to WORLDCOMP’s fraudulent activities. WORLDCOMP’13
will be held at a different resort.

WORLDCOMP will not be held after 2013.

The paper submission deadline for WORLDCOMP’13 was March 18 and it was
extended to April 6 and now it is extended to April 20 (it may be extended
again) but still there are no committee members, no reviewers, and there is no
conference Chairman. The only contact details available on WORLDCOMP’s
website is just an email address! Prof. Hamid Arabnia expends the deadline
to get more papers (means, more registration fee into his pocket!).

Let us make a direct request to Prof. Hamid arabnia: publish all reviews for
all the papers (after blocking identifiable details) since 2000 conference.
Reveal the names and affiliations of all the reviewers (for each year)
and how many papers each reviewer had reviewed on average. We also request
him to look at the Open Challenge at https://sites.google.com/site/moneycomp1

Sorry for posting to multiple lists. Spreading the word is the only way to stop
this bogus conference. Please forward this message to other mailing lists and people.

We are shocked with Prof. Hamid Arabnia and his puppet’s activities

Modular encryption support

<pre>This is a follow-up to the previous thread on gnome-os-list, I'm also
posting this one to nautilus-list.

There is currently a fundraiser for improved security in GNOME
(http://www.gnome.org/friends/). One thing I'd like to see, is good
encryption support. For the moment, I'm going to focus on one specific
feature, modular encryption.

The problem with full disk/home encryption, is that it can't be used by
people who auto-login. It shouldn't be necessary to login everytime you
use the computer, or to allow a friend to quickly look something up on
the internet. But, at the same time, you shouldn't have to sacrifice
security.

My solution to one part of the puzzle, is to allow encrypting individual
folders. Previously, there was no easy, GNOME-like way to do this.

I've updated my previous Nautilus extension, so this is no longer the
case. Encrypting folders is a simple matter of right-clicking a folder
and selecting encrypt. Mounting the folder is as simple as opening the
folder.

This works with auto-login users, as the encryption password is stored
in the keyring, so if it is still locked, it will try to unlock before
it can mount the folder. If the keyring is already unlocked, it is
exactly the same as opening a normal folder (albeit, with a slight lag).

If you've managed to read this far, then I'd like some feedback on
whether you think this is a good feature, that is worth working on
further integration. And, as an extension of that, if this might make a
good GSoC project, that I could work on.

Here is a list of things that need to be considered:
To meet the rest of this criteria, this probably needs to be
integrated into Nautilus properly, rather than as an extension.

If this is integrated into Nautilus, I'm guessing encfs should
be an optional package, in which case we need to make sure the
encryption option is not visible when encfs is not installed.

The encryption password should be linked to the encfs key,
rather than the folder location (to provide flexibility with
        moving folders).

Using libsecret can remove the dependency on gnome-encfs, and
will probably be needed for the previous point.

If moving/renaming a folder in Nautilus, the encrypted
counterpart should also be moved/renamed. Otherwise, the user
will no longer be able to mount it.

An option to revert an encryption should be added, so it is
        reversible.

Possibly, some kind of emblem could be added to the folder to
indicate it is encrypted. Something like a padlock, but would
need to be visually distinct from the read-only one.

The folder, before mounting, is empty. It might be an idea to
hack the display of size to be the size of the encrypted folder.
Otherwise, all non-mounted folders display "0 items".

The implementation needs to copy items back to the original
folder and present an error message if the encryption process
fails. At the moment, the files would be dumped somewhere
        in /tmp.

Hopefully, that about covers everything. If there's anything else that
needs to be considered, please mention it.

<pre>Hi!

There's a bug in Nautilus [1] that I'd be willing to help fix. Basically,
there's no way to add a custom application to the "open with" dialog box
without creating a custom .desktop file (see related AskUbuntu q&amp;a [2-4]).

Some very old (2005) dialog happened [5] on this list, discussing creating
new .desktop files or creating new ones for custom launchers. I guess I'm
pinging here to ask about what the best solution to the bug might be, as
I'm happy to work on it. I've only contributed one patch before, and I'm
not even sure if this is a Nautilus issue or an ubuntu issue.

Thanks for the time!

How does Nautilus create thumbnails?

<pre>Hello all,

I am using Gnome 3.6 on openSUSE Linux and would like to know how Nautilus
creates thumbnails once it encounters a file that does not have one yet.
Specifically, it is not creating thumbnails for RAW images (DNG files and
Olympus ORF files), while they are created for many other file types (JPEG,
PNG, ...). I have looked for solutions on the internet, and some say I
should create the file
/usr/share/thumbnailers/raw.thumbnailer, and others propose to create an
entry with gconftool-2.
I have done both, to no effect. On the command line, I can create
thumbnails with ufraw-batch without problem.

What is the 'official solution' to my problem?

Best regards

I'm using Nautilus 3.4.2 on Ubuntu 12.04 and whenever I go to "Browse
Network"/"Windows Network" I instantly get an error dialog saying:

*Unable to mount location*
Failed to retrieve share list from server

I CAN access a specific machine using the smb://(hostname|ip address) but I CANNOT browse the network environment.

Is this a known bug? Could it related to some Ubuntu specificity.

Custom cell renderer for custom list view column in anautilus-extension?

<pre>Hi folks,

Been knocking up a simple nautilus extension in C to add a new
column to the list view that will show mtime's as a fuller string such
as

Wed Jun 30 21:49:08 1993

This works fine, until you come to sort that column, it of course
gets sorted in string order rather than chronological order.

So OK, what I'd do here would be to store the mtime as a time_t in
the list store and then add a cell renderer to format that as
required. I knocked up a simple app to check that works and it does.
When you click the column heading it sorts in chronological order.

However, I just can't see how to do this within the nautilus-extension
framework.

I've looked at the nautilus source, to see if I can see how it does its
"Modified" column, but so far can't really find it.

Below is the bulk of the code I've got so far, largely
knocked together from bits I found on the net.

I'm adding two columns here, one with the above date string format and
one in, YYYY-MM-DD hh:mm:ss format (which of course does sort
chronologically).

I should add this is with nautilus-3.6.3

Any hints would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,
Andrew

I am an Information Technology Student Pursuing Bachelor of Technology from
NIT Durgapur, India.
I am very much interested in working on Gnome-documents. I was looking at
gnome-documents repository and current iteration design doc. I found the
concept very fascinating and useful.

I thought of starting with simple bugs for gnome-documents, but since it is
new, I couldn't find anything to work on.

It would be great if someone can give me some basic idea on how to proceed,
may be some reading suggestions and then small feature/bugfixes to start
with.

This is a very common problem of file manager applications. When you add

This happen because the copy occur in paralel mode.

How can i set nautilus to copy files to this device by serial form? Start a
copy of new file after finish the actual file.
