My gnucash install has now went off the rails :-( I wanted the bill import section so that
means compile trunk from scratch and include --with-python

Under 2012-1-14 version of trunk there was an export as XML. Today's trunk r22201 no longer has that export as XML but export as CVS. How can I get past this data corruption issue and export/import the dataset in trunk?

The 2011 version was broken where billing importing was hit and miss - known bug.
The 2012-1-14 version worked for a while, then after various linux system upgrades at some point when I returned to entering stuff in the accounting system when I save a file the saved file is not openable. I just did another grab of trunk and did a save from a working file and get a non-working file. The below is an example from the trace file of a:

$ gnucash gnuworked2
(within GnuCash File -> Save As gnuborked)
$ date;gnucash gnuborked.gnucash
Thu May 24 11:57:47 CDT 2012

This is a development version. It may or may not work.

I was looking for a "Contact Us" link with an e-mail form to fill out. I
didn't want to join a list at the time, since I'm not having problems
using the program. (Also, I was e-mailing from work and didn't have
much time.) Most web pages have contact limks at the bottom of the Home
page - I didn't find any on yours.

The project you described sounds like it would meet my needs perfectly.
When it's done will I find it on the Download page?

Thanks for your timely response,
Jacquelyn

   > >>>
   > >>
   > >> You should have looked a little harder: You want
   > >> [4]gnucash-user< at >gnucash.org.
   > >>
   > >> No, Gnucash itself works only on Linux, Microsoft Windows, and Mac
   > >> OSX. A student is working on a companion program for Android as a
   > >> Google Summer of Code project. It won't implement Gnucash but will
   > >> rather serve to collect transactions for later import into
   Gnucash.
   > >> You can have a look at his proposal at

   > >> Regards,
   > >> John Ralls
   > >>
   > >>
   > > I let this one through to gnucash-devel, partly because of the
   > > statement that this was the address found on the web page, and
   > > partly because the question did relate to a version in development
   > > only. The question wasn't suited to my routine note directing
   > > people to the FAQ and then gnucash-user.
   > >
   > > Could I ask the poster....
   > > Could we make gnucash-user more obvious than gnucash-devel on the
   > > web page?
   > >
   > > Anything else that would help you see the user mailing list as the
   > > place to which to write?
   >
   > I dunno. Starting on the main page, there's a block on the left side
   > that says "Support" in big, friendly letters. Underneath that one
   > finds "mailing lists" (after Documentation, FAQ, and Wiki), which
   > points to the Mailing Lists wiki page [1]. That in turn has a heading
   > "Support" under which one finds gnucash-user and its multi-lingual
   > friends. After that is Development, with a description of the list
   > followed by a link.
   >
   > Perhaps instead we should have a support page in the wiki that
   > explains our support resources, including the user mailing list, but
   > doesn't mention the dev list. We'd shrink the support box on the main
   > web page to just the word Support, which would be a link to the wiki
   > page.
   >
   > Regards,
   > John Ralls

     And down the bottom of the page, the only email address actually on
     [6]gnucash.org
     "Server & email outage reports to: [7]gnucash-devel< at >gnucash.org

The GUI prototypes are still from the original proposal and will be updated

I will appreciate any feedback or comments to the ideas put forth. Thanks.

Menu accelerator keys in 2.4.10

Hello all!

I resumed working on the PT translation, and downloaded the 2.4.10. I
had no issues compiling it on ubuntu 12.04.
I noticed that the menu accelerators in menu itens containing an
ampersand (&) as in "Check & Repair" are displayed as "_Check &
Repair"
First I thought this was an issue of my version, or my translation,
but I checked with the ubuntu packaged version (12.04 comes with
2.4.10 - uau!) and it has the same issue in English. My machine runs
an English version of Ubuntu 12.04.

OS orientated development

While reading a recent thread here (the one on libgtk dependency) I
wondered which OS gnc ended up on most.

Looking at
http://sourceforge.net/projects/gnucash/files/gnucash%20%28stable%29/stats/os?dates=2012-02-06%20to%202012-05-03
(i.e. 2.4.10 stable until today) it appears to be Windows.

I tried a number of other time periods but Windows seems to be the main
OS regardless.

I know there are other sources of gnc, for e.g. the one I use day to day
comes from http://portableapps.com/
Perhaps many more people use the gnc from their *nix distro? Do we have
any stats for that? I'm guessing not.

The thing I am thinking about is which version of the packages gnc
depends on should be used?

I am aware some might see this as "fighting talk", I am certainly not
intending to start an OS war (there are plenty of other places for that! )

What I am wondering about is how much is gnc "held back" by the
stability of (say) libgtk on one platform?

If this discussion has already been done to death then I would like a
pointer to the thread.

My aim (and that of some others) is a gnc with Python 2.7 (I can't see
the need to leap to Python 3.x at the moment). The problem I (and
possibly others) are finding is that the build involves sacrificing
small animals, virgins and so on because it isn't clear which version of
which package is required on which OS.

Surely
http://code.gnucash.org/builds/win32/build-logs/build-trunk-2012-05-03.log
could include version numbers ... I'm prepared to write the sh code to
show them if someone has a working combination. We shouldn't really
have to do it by trial and error since we know someone (the person that
compiles the Win32 version) knows which versions of which packages they
are using.

More generally, why, historically, is building gnc such a nightmare?
Does it have to be that way?

Consider this: if a Python 2.7 compatible Windows version was built
you'd get a whole load of Python people writing new reports and so on,
that would enhance rather than detract from gnc, surely?

Are their a bunch of jealous guys protecting their bit of the code?
That sort of thing has happened with other open source projects before.
I hope it is not true of gnc.

Hi,

I have just committed a couple of patches that should allow the Windows
build to use a git repository as its source. I started from Christian's
original work and tweaked it a bit to avoid the sed segfault we had before.

Parameters to set in custom.sh are:
REPOS_TYPE=git
(default value is svn)
GIT_REV=trunk (or whatever branch/tag/commit you like)
UPDATES_SOURCES=yes

So far the build runs fine. What hasn't been updated yet are the build
scripts used for the automatic nightly builds.

And also, I'm not sure what the code should do to "update the source".
In svn this was as simple as "svn up", because there's a central
repository and the working copy is checked out from there. But what
would be the equivalent in git ? git pull ? Our custom git-update ? git
rebase ?

Hello,

A friend of our family recently paid £35 to http://www.mi-shop.co.uk/ for accounting software that they call "P.S.B.A". They received the CD through the post and installed it, and found that it installs GNUCash.

Appreciate you release it under GPL license, but is this considered a scam? There is no mention on their website that they are re-distributing GNUCash, and charging for it. It feels like they are basically taking donation money out of your pockets, and to be honest, I don't trust the distribution that they send out either (based on no evidence).

Thanks

Increasing trunk libgtk dependency to 2.22.0?

Currently, SVN trunk requires libgtk-2.18.1. However, recently (in r22086 from
patches in bug#672161) some new code was added that uses functions that were
introduced in gtk-2.22, e.g. gtk_assistant_commit.

Can we increase our required libgtk to 2.22? Current Ubuntu 11.10 comes with
2.24.6; other up-to-date distros probably with similar versions. What do you
think?

A clean install of Xubuntu 11.10, Gnucash-2.4.7 fails with mysql on
startup. If I start from the command line with

$ gnucash mysql://user< at >localhost/gnucash

when it tries to load the user data a blank popup appears. If I hit
<enter>, gnucash opens with an empty "Unsaved Book", and the trace file
contains

* 08:26:59  WARN <gnc.backend.dbi> [conn_test_dbi_library()]
Test_DBI_Library: Failed to insert test row into table

* 08:27:32  CRIT <gnc.backend.dbi> gnc_dbi_unlock: assertion
`dbi_conn_error( dcon, NULL ) == 0' failed

My guess is that the <Gtk> warnings are from the blank popup.

Once gnucash is running, I can open the mysql db and everything seems
fine. Opening an xml or sqlite3 file from the command line works well.
Also compiling 2.4.10-1 from source behaves the same way. I've been
running this same configuration on Ubuntu 10.10 for months.

Uncaught critical error in the python bindings without apparent cause

Hi,

I've run into an error using the python bindings:

This is the code (changed a bit to make it easier to read):

c = book.CustomerLookupByID(customerid)
assert( isinstance(c, Customer) )
CUR = c.GetCurrency()
assert( isinstance(CUR, GncCommodity) )

invoice = Invoice(
             book=book,
             id=next_invoice_id,
             currency=CUR,
             owner=c
             )

It goes through without throwing an exception but produces the following
output:

* 19:41:21  CRIT <gnc.backend.sql> gnc_sql_save_commodity: assertion
`pCommodity != NULL' failed
* 19:41:21  WARN <gnc.backend.sql> [add_gvalue_owner_to_slist()] Invalid
owner type: 0

I used pdb to investigate this:

- CUR is identical to book.get_table().lookup('CURRENCY', 'EUR')
- c is a customer created manually using the gnucash GUI and all it's
properties appear to be correct.
- next_invoice_id is "W000083".

I've stepped through the code. The first line ("CRIT") of the output
happens here:
/usr/lib/python2.7/dist-packages/gnucash/gnucash_core_c.py (3379)
gncInvoiceSetID()
-> return _gnucash_core_c.gncInvoiceSetID(*args)

which is the result of this function call:
__init__()
-> self.SetID(id)

The "WARN" output is caused by this:
gncInvoiceSetCurrency()
-> return _gnucash_core_c.gncInvoiceSetCurrency(*args)

which is the result of a simple SetCurrency in Invoice.__init__, one
line after SetID.

I'm very confused. How is the ID related to pCommodity and how is the
currency related to the owner type? Since I've stepped through every
function call I'm certain that the output happens at the locations I
mentioned but it just doesn't make any sense to me.

My gnucash version:
GnuCash 2.4.10
Built 2012-03-05 from r21973

I don't know how to find the source of this problem. I'd appreciate any
input.

Can't find an exact previous thread point to add onto as there have been
many here and in gnucash-user so apols for starting a new thread about
something some people may consider well done by now.

perl's Finance::Quote is what it is.

Getting quotes from google finance has been mentioned (can't find the
posting right now)

I'd like to throw in http://getquote-tedsoft.blogspot.co.uk/ as a
possible alternative too. It is OOo / LibreOffice friendly; the author
isn't (as far as I can see) anti general use and has noticed the same
malfunctioning we have through Finance::Quote (i.e. the problem wasn't
Finance::Quote per se).

My thoughts are:

1) if someone is doing intra-day trading or similar then they shouldn't
be using GnuCash to get prices, I see GnuCash getting prices as a weekly
, once a day at most, idea of what my stuff may be worth.

2) Is the perceived problem

2.i)       Finance::Quote itself?

2.ii) Finance::Quote needing perl? (fine for me but maybe not for all)

2.iii) Finance::Quote not meeting the needs of users in adaptation
to scraped sources changing?

2.iv)      Something else?

3) perl can be trimmed down to only the necessary bits, that can be made
part of the install (a minimalistic perl is very small)

4) we can presume most people have some sort of Java (rather than, say,
perl or python) on their systems these days and try approaching the
author of getquote to see if he is interested in playing with our project.

5) we make GnuCash's price source independent of source by defining an
interface. i.e. the user uses their preferred price source and presents
it to GnuCash in an agreed format. this will involve simple helper
scripts as I see it.

Any thoughts on this?

To some extent I am trying to defuse the "GnuCash is broken because it
won't get the stuff for my shares" thing as there is more to it than that.
