We used to assume that a native package had an arch type of '*' (i.e.
it would always be compatible with everything).

However, on a mixed 32 and 64 bit platform, we can't use a 64-bit
native library with a downloaded 32-bit implementation. I've changed
the code to record the type for x86_64 packages so that they won't be
selected in combination with 32-bit implementations:

http://repo.or.cz/w/zeroinstall.git?a=commit;h=a1980f1fd207d171d480049a1890ffdb0f72ed02

We might need a similar change for RPMs too. Patches welcome...

I have, however, tested it on a Windows machine and thus greatly

There seem to be some odd problems with file descriptors, backslashes,

0launch 0.35

A new release of Zero Install (0.35) is now available:

http://0install.net/injector.html

Changes since 0.34:

New features:

- Added support for multi-arch We can choose either x86_64 binaries or
i[3456]86 binaries, but we can't mix both in a single process. Also
fixed the sense of the OS and CPU tests so that we now pick the best
OS and CPU match rather than the worst (oops!).

- Added --cpu and --os arguments to 0launch This allows you to choose a
binary for a different host. It's also useful on an x86_64 machine to
 run an x86 binary.

Bug-fixes:

- Don't create .desktop filenames with spaces; xdg-desktop-menu gets
confused and gives a misleading error message ("does not
have a proper vendor prefix") if the name contains a space. Reported
 by Thomas Formella.

- Allow file:///path feed URIs. This is equivalent to just using /path. Useful
for drag-and-drop from Konqueror. Reported by Matt Lawrence.

- Log a useful warning if a user_overrides file gets corrupted. Don't
know what could cause this, though. Reported on the ROX web-site.

- Cope with os.uname not existing. Some systems don't support it yet.

- Use subprocess instead of fork when running gpg. Some systems don't
yet have support for fork(). Note that the download and unpacking code
still uses fork, however. See "0launch doesn't work on Windows":

 http://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?func=detail&aid=2029407&group_id=76468&atid=547194

- Only try to download each icon once Before, we would keep trying to
download an icon that was missing.

Documentation:

- Improved web-site design.

- Improved epydoc.

GUI:

- Added "Show Cache" button to "0desktop --manage" window.

- Added "0store manage" command to show the GTK cache viewer. The "Show
Cache" button has been removed from the "0launch --gui" dialog box,
since it didn't really belong there.

Python API:

- Removed a load of unused imports. Thanks, pyflakes! Also found a bug.
Note that this is a slight API change, since it was previously
possible to get these symbols from the wrong module without an error.

- Moved CacheExplorer to zeroinstall.gtkui.

- CacheExplorer now takes the iface_cache as an input

- Moved help_box to zeroinstall.gtkui.

- Moved some useful GUI code into zeroinstall.gtkui.gtkutils.

- Added <overlay/> support to model. However, it still isn't supported
yet (see the plash-overlay branch for one option, though).

A new release of 0publish-gui is now available:

 http://0install.net/injector-packagers.html

Ensure that the 'Help test new versions' option is on to use the new version.

Changes since 0.8:

- Use agent when invoking GPG, skip asking for passphrase if present.
 (See also http://lists.gnupg.org/pipermail/gnupg-
 devel/2003-April/019946.html) (frank.richter< at >gmail.com)
This fixes an I/O exception when gpg is used with an agent (as 0publish-gui
still tries to write something to gpg but the pipe is already dead)

- Also offer alternative identities in the signing keys list
 (frank.richter< at >gmail.com).

- Cope with whitespace differences in unit tests.

- Fixed a bug in the handling of version numbers we can't parse.

- Improved feed stylesheet:
 - Show architecture in downloads table.
 - Display message if there are no downloads.
 - Display dependencies.

- Added source option for library mappings.

 In Zero Install:
 - A library package contains the foo.so and foo.so.version files.
 - A -dev package contains the header files.

 In a distribution package:
 - A library package contains the foo.so.version file only.
 - A -dev package contains headers and the foo.so file.

So, if you try to use a Zero Install -dev package with a distribution library
package, no one provides the libfoo.so file. To make up for this, you can now
 specify it in the feed.

- Added PKG_CONFIG_PATH to default list of environment variables for
 <requires>.

- Also show compile boxes if we inherit 'src' from a group.

- Display value of 'arch' attribute, not just the fact that the
 attribute is set.

- Stopped using deprecated Policy.get_interface() method.

- Added x86_64 (and ppc) cpu types to the default list. Suggested by
 Ilja Honkonen.

- Only add a stylesheet line to signed feeds. Local feeds normally
don't come with a stylesheet, so it was a bit confusing.

- Replace GPL license entry with options for versions 2 and 3. Copied
from freshmeat.net. Suggested by Andreas K. Förster.

- Allow releases of 0publish-gui to be made using 0release.

OK, the setup.sh creation program is now available:

 http://repo.or.cz/w/0export.git

To get it:

$ git clone git://repo.or.cz/0export.git
$ 0alias 0export 0export/0export.xml

Usage:

$ 0export setup.sh http://rox.sourceforge.net/2005/interfaces/Edit

This gets you a file called "setup.sh" containing:

- All feeds needed to run the program.
- All GPGs keys signing the feeds.
- All selected implementations (versions).
- A copy of Zero Install, in case the target system doesn't have it.
- An installation script.

To install on a machine without Zero Install or a network connection:

$ sh setup.sh

It's not finished yet, but you can try it out. In particular, running
setup.sh actually runs the program as the last step at the moment,
rather than adding a launcher.

Also, there's no GUI at present.

The big difference between this and zero2bundle is that the archives
in setup.sh are imported into the Zero Install cache and run from
there, which means that after installation you get updates in the
usual way, and libraries are shared between programs. By contrast,
zero2bundle programs are run in-place (no upgrades).

I can distribute an GUI for editing Grub by zero install? What if the user don't have grub instaled yet? I need to tell the user to install it using the distro tools and after that use the zero install feed?

If zero-install could be run as root when needed, would it solve any problem? Or is this only due zero-install design?

I think you are making an risky supposition. What if the user is running an pure KDE distro? Or an thin server set-up? Will zero-install silently fail? Will the user enter the dependency hell? And for other common but less default libraries? There must be an clear rule.

I think that zero-install feeds should list all dependencies that injector itself don't depend directly or indirectly. This would eliminate any kind of problems, I think.

Then, if you want to minimize the number of dependencies developers need to add to their feed, make injector depend on those. For example, you can make injector depends on all LSB v3.x packages. Then, an new element in the feed can say "besides those dependencies listed, I expect LSB vX.X programs".

I tried to search in the internet, but I couldn't find the total size of this. I hope this is an manageable download for any functional linux install. And I'm not talking about full LSB compilancy (names, paths, etc) but only an basic set of libraries and tools that LSB specifies. In debian/ubuntu there are meta packages that should install all this.

In Kubuntu, after installing a couple of programs, I'm now trying to download LSB package, and it says that it needs to download additional 12mb from internet, and occupy extra 47mb space. Not bad, but I'm starting with an above-average base.

By the way, good part of it was rpm and deb-related things: alien, debhelper, librpm, rpm and dpkg-dev. There may be more things like that already installed in kubuntu. This will rarely be dependencies for user-level programs. So maybe zero-install should create an own sub-set of LSB, or even an completely different listage. On the other hand, there are many advantages in using an already 'finished' and popular work.

Any way, you need to officially set one (or some) basic platforms that zero-install feeds can expect. It is not good leave this responsibility to guess work and packagers laziness. ;-)

Maybe, view should have Show URI enabled by default? The URI would

"Show Fingerprint" may be useful.

trusting GIMP's fingerprint implicitly trusts GTK's. This prevents
flooding the user with popup dialogs when they download large
projects.

Thanks,
Matt

Multi-arch improvements

I've added support for multi-arch systems now. The idea is that a
x86_64 system can run 64 bit and 32 bit binaries and libraries, but a
process must use either all 64 bit implementations or all 32 bit. i.e.
you can't have a 32bit binary depending on a 64bit library.

Hopefully this will remove the need for the hacky RPM patch (which
allows mixing 64bit and 32bit implementations freely) and make things
work better on Ubuntu.

There are also now --cpu and --os arguments to 0launch, in case you
want to specify the target architecture explicitly. For example, if
you're downloading things for a different machine.
