Compiling Hercules for 64-bit Windows

<pre>Here is how to compile a 64-bit Hercules for Windows (x64) using only the
freely-downloadable Microsoft tools on 64-bit Windows 7:

1. Install Visual C++ 2010 Express from the Visual Studio 2010 Express page:
    http://www.microsoft.com/visualstudio/en-us/products/2010-editions/express

2. Install Microsoft Windows SDK 7.1 from:
    http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=8279
IMPORTANT: select all components *except* the Visual C++ Compilers

3. Install Visual C++ 2010 SP1 Compiler Update for the Windows SDK 7.1 from:
    http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=4422

4. Go to the start menu and choose "All Programs"
    - "Microsoft Windows SDK v7.1" - "Microsoft Windows SDK 7.1 Command Prompt"

5. If you require gzip or bzip2 for disk or tape compression, or if you
require PCRE for the Hercules Automatic Operator facility, you should
install the AMD64 versions of these programs in winbuild\zlib\x64
winbuild\bzip2\x64 and winbuild\pcre\x64 under the Hercules directory.
You may override these default directory locations by setting
    environment variables, for example:
    SET ZLIB_DIR=c:\packages\zlib
    SET BZIP2_DIR=c:\packages\bzip2
    SET PCRE_DIR=c:\packages\pcre

6. nmake -f makefile-dllmod.msvc clean
    nmake -f makefile-dllmod.msvc

7. The binaries will be installed into subfolder "msvc.AMD64.bin"
If you compiled on a 32-bit Windows system, copy this folder
to your target 64-bit Windows machine.

8. If you copy the binaries to a machine which does not have Visual
Studio 2010 (VS10) installed, then you must also install the
    Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 Redistributable Package (x64)
on the target machine. This package can be downloaded from
    http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=14632

This method works for me. There may be other methods that work too.

Things to think: Hercules-390 running on mainframe

<pre>I have been thinking about if there are any good reason to run Hercules-390 on a mainframe and I am guessing that may be a good idea.
Linux is becoming an option as one hypervisor in some platforms, x86, s390. This is thanks to KVM (Kernel Virtual Machine) that
is ready for both plataforms and can manage a virtual CPU and memory for the guest using the hardware support available in the
host CPU.

The point is that the virtualization is for CPU and memory only, for that reason another software is needed to complement the full
virtual hardware with bus, hard disk and other parts. These softwares like QEMU, VMWere or VirtualBox follow the model of PC
what means that only OSs that run on PC (Windows, FreeBSD, QNX and Linux) hardware can make use of this virtual systems.

My think is that Hercules-390 is an emulator for z/Architecture and if part of the code that emulates CPU and memory be replaced
by KVM on s390, we can have instead of an emulator, a mainframe virtual machine under linux that can be used to run any OS IBM.

I think that this radical change can make great impact in the way that people is using Hercules today.

I would like to read some opinions about this.

Hercules and EAV

<pre>Hi, David,

as for now, Hercules 3.07 does not support DASD devices with Extended Addressablity. That's a pity, because it inhibits installation of DB2 V10, which requires EAV-Volumes to install catalog and directory upon. So my question: Do you (aka: the Hercules team) plan support of devices like 3390-A in the near future?

Thank you very much for answering soon,
Jo

<pre>I'm using Enrico's 15 April 2012 x64 Windows snapshot, which works without a glitch (except for the fact that all utilities ABEND). One of things I like about it is the fact that it disables the big red X to close the window.

However...

Yesterday I found out that changing the properties of this window will re-enable the red X. One of the things that does so is changing e.g. the size via a right click on the title bar. Now, in this case I didn't consciously do so (I know I definitely didn't change the size!), so there must be other things. It's not a big deal, but if anyone could look into it, thanks!

Does anyone have Z/series compatiblity macros ?

<pre>I wondered if anyone had a library of macros to simulate the extended instruction set of the Z series machines? As a simple example, in the DOS assembler, I can say BE for BC 8, but there is no BER equivalent mneonic of BCR 8; that feature was added later. You could make a BER macro to simulate the opcode. Later assemblers had this built-in. Move forward to the Z series machine, there are so many new Z instructions an assembler coder could use, say, in DOS under Hercules, even in non-priviledged mode, if we had a set of macros to define them.

Surely someone has done this somewhere, and it seems that the macros would be straight-forward enough that they would assemble correctly in DOS/VS or MVS. Is anyone aware of such a macro library?

Regards,

Robert

<pre>I was reading about the turmoil at Yahoo and the imminent departure of CEO Scott Thompson, when they mentioned that "50 non-core products are going to be cut".

http://www.zdnet.com/blog/btl/yahoo-axes-50-non-core-products-whats-next/74570?tag=content;siu-container

They are not mentioning specific items they are letting go, but Groups and Mail were not mentioned as being kept.

If Yahoo drops Groups and Mail, is there any plan in place to migrate Hercules to another platform?

The only venue that seems up to the task is Google groups.

In any case, this could be very disruptive to all Hercules users if this happens. Does anyone have a Plan B for Hercules if Yahoo goes away?

Regards,

Robert

<pre>Is there any step-by-step tutorial to configure TCP/IP on ADCD z/OS running under Hercules on Win 7 64bits ?

I browsed several threads, posts and A LOT, a lot of troubleshooting about this subject, but none of them pointing to complete (end to end) tutorial with windows programs required, conf changes and TCP/IP Profile modification necessary.

And if is there are no tutorial this way, do you guys think would be good idea to put some efforts on one like this ?

<pre>To Jay Maynard and the membership of this group:

First of all, Jay, thank you for your warm welcome to this group, though I am not quite sure what topics are within the scope of this group. I hope this one is and I apologize if it is not.

I am curious about how Hercules runs on 64-bit machines, particularly ones with multiple cores. Can Hercules "see" these additional cores and take advantage of them (treat them like an additional processor), or does the host OS (Windows, Linux, Mac OS) preclude this? Are there other benefits from running on 64-bit multi-core?

Finally, is there a particular 64-bit processor most of you favor?

Again, thanks for your welcome and happy mainframing to all of you!!!

Yours truly,

Robert S. Duncan

<pre>Since snapshot 2012-05-05 REXX support i enabled... superb :)

Now i'm startin testing with a config file written in REXX

Everything works find, but using the fish's HercGUI the tape function
"Load Tape" does nothing.

Using the convential configure method (without REXX) the function works.

What I find out is, that if you dynamically attach an new tape device the GUI function don't work. And that is what a REXX configuration file does.

Do anyone have a solution for that small problem :)

Thanks in advance

And the additional info is:

Command:

D:\Hercules\dasd&gt;"c:\Hercules\Hercules 3.07 (64 Bit)\dasdcopy.exe"
sares1.dasd sares1.cckd

sares1.dasd is an uncompressed 3390-3
"c:\Hercules\Hercules 3.07 (64 Bit)" is in the path

The "official" V3.07 version does work!
