developing MirrorBrain

Hello,

sorry for crossposting to both lists, but as the FDO one has lots of
developers on it, and I wanted to raise their attention - without
distracting them from important LibreOffice work, of course. ;-)

Many of you may know that we rely on MirrorBrain for providing our
downloads. It has proven to be very stable and reliable, but there are
several improvements we have incorporated already - many of them purerly
documentation related (better setup on our systems), but right now, we
also face some issues with the packaging, that needs to be improved to
run on recent platforms. Plus, we have some wishlist items, like live
download statistics, which we want to implement.

In a nutshell, I think it makes sense to get a bit deeper involved in
MirrorBrain development. We are a large adopter of it, and if we improve
it for our use, it makes sense to share that with the general public.
Maybe we can join forces with other projects using it as well.

I have started a discussion on the MirrorBrain list on that at

http://mirrorbrain.org/archive/mirrorbrain/0187.html

and would like to follow-up on our website list with details on how to
coordinate that TDF-wise. If anyone wants to contribute, feel free to
join, of course!

MirrorBrain log parsing

Hello,

given I had to compile MirrorBrain myself (and everyone knows about my
severe lack of development skills :-) I would like to make a test run on
the new server with the new base OS, before I finally make the switch.

The plan is that all processes (rsyncing new builds, feeding mirrors
etc.) are still done on the old server (bilbo1), from where I sync to
the new one (bilbo2), and have the download.documentfoundation.org alias
point to bilbo2.

We then should see if the new setup performs as well as the old one, and
with a TTL of 5 minutes, we can easily switch back to bilbo1 when needed.

The only valueable data, however, is log files. I therefore did some
quick test downloads and would like to ask Norbert and Kendy to see if
their current parsers can still parse the log files in their new form.
Here's an extract:

http://pastebin.com/kCM9G70P

Kendy, Norbert, can one of you confirm your parser still works, so we
don't run into troubles (losing data) when I switch on the new machine?

The above log is a mixture of IPv4 and IPv6, different clients,
operating systems, and files/directories requested.

Thanks a lot,
Florian

at least one confused user on the Ask site wondering why they're

(I can repro the problem on my machine)

Is there an easy way for us to take a mirror out of the pool
temporarily? Ideally there'd be some kind of a reporting tool ("This

1K file every hour; remove the mirror if the file doesn't download
properly)

OpenSUSE Build Service and MirrorBrain

Hello,

unfortunately, all of a sudden, the MirrorBrain packages for Ubuntu
11.04 have vanished from the OpenSUSE build service. Previously, they
were located at
http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/Apache:/MirrorBrain/xUbuntu_11.10/
but for a few days, only versions for Debian 6.0 and Ubunut 10.04 are
available, both of which are too old for our system (Python 2.6 vs 2.7).

Luckily, that happened before we switched the download infrastructure to
the new server, and I've already filed a bug at
http://mirrorbrain.org/issues/issue122 - but still, I'd be interested if
anyone with more knowledge about the OpenSUSE build service can find out
whether the package has been removed intentionally, or some error occured.

Judging by
https://build.opensuse.org/project/show?project=Apache:MirrorBrain it
seems it has indeed been removed, and I'd be interested to add it again.
As we need the package anyways, I'd even be happy to maintain a Ubuntu
12.04 repo there, if someone can give me a helping hand on where to start.

For the moment, any chance of getting a hand on the latest revision of
the packages as they were hosted? That'd spare me some time... I wasn't
able to find them on
http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/DISCONTINUED:/

Thanks,
Florian

admin meeting this summer

Hello,

this summer, we plan again for an admin meeting in Linuxhotel Essen.

It is primarily intended as working weekend for those already part of
our infrastructure team, but we'd like to take a chance to also invite
those who are new and interested to join this area of the project. For a
part of the meeting, we also plan to have a phone conference or Google
Hangout, to get remote participants involved.

The poll for date is available at

http://moreganize.ch/bmxeKXZL7Ju

Rough translation: Only the respective Saturdays are shown, but the
meeting is planned Friday evening to Sunday lunchtime. The ideal weekend
would be July 19th to 21st, as for the other dates, I have an event in
Munich before and would have to catch the night train to Essen.

Looking forward to lots of feedback!

Making Flattr donations page better

Hello! I discovered Flattr recently and wanted to donate to LibreOffice.
And I've found some things that need to be fixed and more people will
notice your page.

1) Now you have only one page named after TDF. It's good but you can add
LibreOffice page as a Thing -- and people will be able to find you via
flattr search.
2) The Firefox Flattr plugin highlights the flattrable sites, it's very
useful. But it doesn't highlight libreoffice.org, and to fix this, you
have to add the URL as a new thing, as I mentioned before.
3) It would be good to name the LO thing page "Official", so people will
not be confused.
4) And you can add the logo as an avatar, so the page would be found easily.

This simple steps can help many people to find you and make them sure
they're about to flattr the right pages. Thank you!

there are many wiki main pages in different languages which show old
download links, e.g. [1], [2], [3], [4].

It seems that there aren't (m)any people who work on these pages.
Should we commenting out/deleting all download links on these wiki main
pages?
I don't know if there are existing new versions for their language.

[2] https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Main_Page/cs
[3] https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Main_Page/el
[4] https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Main_Page/th

And a special page:

https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Main_Page/lo-la

There is no real content in it. I vote to delete the whole page. Better
to have no page for this language than to have an empty page for about 3
years.

site is available at:

If you own an account on the LibreOffice-Conference-2012-Site you could
try to login with your credentials on the test-site. I'm happy to get

Hello,

because we had a very open policy for our extensions- and
templates-websites many people created an account on the two sites.
There were a big number of accounts that has never been used so far. We
had about more than 6000 accounts on the templates site and worked in a
team of three admins to cut them down dramatically. We are working on
the extensions site now. We started with about nearly 7000 accounts and
are currently at an amount of 5500 accounts. We had to delete the
accounts in the interface currently manually because there is no special
tool available for this work.

We (Uwe, Erich and myself) decided to close the self registration for
the sites and provide a form to ask for an account if a contributor
wants to host his extension or template on one of the sites. If you want
to help improve the form and its text you could find the current version
at http://vm5.documentfoundation.org:9095/templateuploadcenter/en (at
the bottom of the site there is the link to Hosting your Template).

automatically checks 'Reset Assignee to default' and
                    'Reset QA Contact to default'
          Severity: enhancement
    Classification: Unclassified
                OS: All
          Reporter: joren.libreoffice< at >telenet.be
          Hardware: All
            Status: UNCONFIRMED
           Version: unspecified
         Component: WWW
           Product: LibreOffice

Changing component of a bug report automatically checks 'Reset Assignee to
default' and 'Reset QA Contact to default'. When you don't uncheck it (obvious)
the fields will be reseted.

Quite annoying when you are in the QA field, and someone changes the component
without unchecking it... when you don't place yourself back in that field,
you'll not get any information anymore (unless you always place yourself in the
CC field too).

Kind regards,
Joren

Fostering project internal communication

Hello,

sorry for spamming all the lists, but in the light of recent events and
discussions, I'd like to make all of you aware of an important mailing
list, that so far has not been used as extensively as it should be,
which led to some frustration and communication issues.

As part of our mission to foster the project internal communication, I'd
like to tell you about our so called projects mailing list, which Sophie
initiated quite a while ago, and which should be used for communication
amongst the various projects - e.g. design and marketing, development
and marketing, UX and development, and the like.

The list's intention is not to be a gossip list where everything should
be thrown at, but to make all affected projects aware of important
changes. Philosophy: Low traffic, but important topics.

Some examples are: Change of version numbers, a new slogan, design
changes, new products. In other words: Everything that has an impact on
other areas of working than the one where the change originally comes from.

If one team decides LibreOffice will now be called different, and has a
shiny new colour, surely marketing should know in time. Well, a bit of a
made up example, but you get the point... ;-)

We have seen some unpleasant events in the past, that based on my
experience, are mostly due to the lack of communication, or due to
miscommunication. To avoid that in the future, I'd like to call out to
everyone of you, if you are active in one of the subprojects, to also
join this mailing list by sending an empty e-mail to

projects+subscribe< at >global.libreoffice.org

and following the instructions mailed back. At least one or two
representatives from *each* project should join this list, to act as a
gateway.

I will soon follow up further with some details and topics that have
reached me the past weeks, and how we could solve them.

Again, sorry for spamming, and have a great weekend!
Florian

Seeking for list moderators

Hello,

at the moment, we are looking for volunteers who could help moderate
this mailing list.

If you are interested, the only requirement is that you are subscribed
to the list yourself and read its mails in a somehow timely manner, but
that's about it.

Moderation means dealing with e-mails that do not automatically make it
to the list, which you then manually forward, or reject. This happens
either when an e-mail comes from an unknown sender, e.g. when a project
member uses a different address for posting. It also occurs when someone
unexperienced writes to the list, thinking it's a private account, but
in fact it's a public list.

You'll receive the message to be moderated via e-mail, which you then
can either "moderate through", or reject.

Is someone interested in joining our efforts? It'd be much appreciated -
just drop me an email (please also copy me directly, and not only the
list), then I'm happy to add you to the list of moderators.

Thanks!
Florian

new feature: getting list of subscribers

Hello,

I've just enabled a new mailing list manager feature: List owners can
now get a list of the subscribers directly, without manual intervention
needed from infra. ;-)

To do so, you need to send from the address that is configured as list
owner/moderator an e-mail to

listname+list< at >domain

As an example:

discuss+list< at >de.libreoffice.org
or
users+list< at >global.libreoffice.org

In case you do not get any reply after some time, chances are you are
sending from the wrong address. In that case, please ping infra via
hostmaster< at >documentfoundation.org and I'll investigate.

Thanks, and enjoy,
Florian
