Remaining oddity of ROX version for Xubuntu 11.10

Pleased to say that ROX is now working nicely on my new box running Xubuntu
11.10. :-) However there is one occasional 'odd' behaviour which I wonder
if anyone recognises or can suggest a fix.

Every now and then I get a pop up window telling me that zero-install is
downloading 'rox filer'. Yet I installed ROX using synaptic from the *buntu
repository lists.

The distro does include zero install as an option on the menu. But if I use
this it shows no sign of my having any zero install items.

Doesn't seem to affect day-to-day operation. But a bit of a puzzle, and
leaves me wondering what it is downloading, why. I've never (knowingly)
used zero install, so I don't know if this is normal for zero install to
'check' on apps it knows about even if installed from a distro package.
Anyone know, or can say how I can stop this?

Quirks with ROX on Xubuntu 11.10

Hi,

I've been going though installing my preferred software and settings on a
new box running Xubuntu 11.10. One of the 'basic essentials' of which for
me is ROX. I installed the version of ROX provided via synaptic, and
overall it works fine. But there are a few quirks where it doesn't match
the versions I have on earlier *buntu distros, so want to describe them
here are see if people can suggest the reason/fix.

The main quirk is that the ROX panel (icon bar) has a size which I can't
alter as before. Earlier versions have a slider for the size of the panel
as part of the ROX options. But the menus for this in the Xubuntu 11.10
version have no such slider I can find, and I've not found any GUI way. It
give no alternative to 'Default' for the panel.

If I look inside

 .config/rox.sourceforge.net/ROX-Filer/pan_Default

I find an entry width="52" which I *guess* sets the width (i.e. height) of
the panel. But altering this value seems to make no difference. So either
I'm totally musinderstanding, or the people who packaged ROX for 11.10 have
'made alternative arrangements'.

The situation is confused because 'zero install' is seperately listed by
the Xubuntu panel items. *And* every now and then the system seems to pop
up some progress windows that seem to try and access zero install for ROX.
But I didn't use that method, I used synaptic.

I would like the 'taller icon bar' because my eyesight is lousy so I use
big icons for my own apps on the panel. At present, despite saying I want
icon *and* text under the icons, the text doesn't appear for some items. I
suspect this is because the panel is too small.

MIME Type incorrectly applied

I'm a new ROX user, and I'm setting up my various configurations.  I've
run across at least one incorrectly applied mime-type, though.  In my
music folders, I have an *.m3u file which holds the playlist for the
directory.  When I try to apply an action to it (Audacious, in my case),
ROX wants to change the action for "text/plain"  I looked up where *.m3u
might be referenced in /usr/share/mime, and found these entries:

/usr/share/mime/globs:

audio/x-mpegurl:*.m3u
application/vnd.apple.mpegurl:*.m3u

Also, in /usr/share/mime/audio:

x-mpegurl.xml:  <alias type="application/m3u"/>
x-mpegurl.xml:  <alias type="audio/m3u"/>
x-mpegurl.xml:  <alias type="audio/x-m3u"/>
x-mpegurl.xml:  <glob pattern="*.m3u"/>
x-mpegurl.xml:  <glob pattern="*.m3u8"/>

So clearly the mime type should be "audio/x-mpgurl" based on globbing.

I used the ROX MIME-editor, and when I pull up audio/x-mpegurl, it, too,
shows, right in the first section ("Name matching")
Match "*.m3u"
Match "*.m3u8"
Match "*.vlc"

On the (far-fetched) theory that spaces in the filename were causing
problems, I tried it with no spaces, but it had no effect.

My question is, how do I determine where ROX is getting the "text/plain"
MIME type for *.m3u, and how do I get it to find the CORRECT one?  Are
there MIME shared libraries ROX depends on? (I built this system from
scratch, so no "yum" or "apt-get" please.)

Auto running rox -S at bootup

I've been happily running and using ROX on three different linux boxes
(Xubuntu, Ubuntu, and Crunchbang) for a few years. I am shortly going to
get a new machine and intend to use ROX on that as well. However I have
forgotten how to set up the system so that rox -S runs when the machine is
booted up! Nor can I find all my notes.

What is the simplest way to do this? I had thought that adding "rox -S" to
the etc/rc.local file might do the job. But that doesn't work on a Ubuntu
install I tried this morning. I'm fairly sure that adding a file like this
did work OK for the systems that I have doing this. but I can't recall the
details and haven't yet found the file (or my old notes).

I'll keep experimenting, but would welcome an explanation.

FWIW I plan to run Xubuntu (or maybe Mint or Crunchbang). And I prefer to
have one Xfce panel at the top of the screen with the rox panel at the
bottom.

I have two problems with roxterm (2.4.2 from
https://launchpad.net/~h-realh/+archive/ppa, oneiric ) and 2.0.1 from
source code:
- roxterm-config segfaults when I try to edit a profile ("properties")
(2.4.2 only)
- roxterm segfaults if "scrollbar_pos" is set to zero

Both work fine with 1.13.5

Pinboard Icons Size

Is it not possible to use bigger icons on the pinboard? Icons on the panels
can be changed by reducing the panel width. But icons on the desktop? Can I
really only change the font size?

no sendto menu items icon

Hi everyone,

this is my first post to the list. I like rox lightness and ease of use, 
I'm just facing a minor problem :
I'm simply using rox-filer with icewm (no Rox-session). I set some items 
in the sendto menu, but strangely they are displayed in the menu without 
icons while the icons are displayed when running rox-filer on an XFCE or 
GNOME session.
Anyone knows what I could do to get the icons with icewm ?

ROX-Filer 2.11

ROX-Filer 2.11 (the file manager at the core of the ROX desktop) has
been released.

You can install it by entering this URL into AddApp:

Changes in 2.11:

- Converted from Glade to GtkBuilder.

- Fixed typo in German translation (Alek).

- "build" script runs autoconf and build the documentation if necessary. This

- Don't lower panel when the pointer moves over an applet. Reported by mark76
  on IRC.

- Centre the pinboard image correctly if larger than the screen (Mohamed Amine
  IL Idrissi). Patch sent to Ubuntu anonymously and forwarded; see Ubuntu bug

- Depend on 0compile 0.19.1. Fixes bug using distribution-provided pkg-config.

- Added build dependency on pkg-config.

- Bugfix: unselect item when menu is closed. We used to listen for
  "unmap_event", but this is no longer emitted in recent versions of GTK.
  Switched to using "selection-done" instead. Closes #2925212 (reported by
  Barry Kauler).

- Added button to options window to create the 'rox' start up script (Stephen
  Watson).

- Updated Italian translation (Yuri).

- Updated Brazilian Portuguese translation (Sérgio Cipolla).

- Updated Spanish and Galician translations (Antonio Sánchez). The
  how-to-change-permissions explanation had a mistake that made the help window
  appear blank.

- Updated Spanish translation (Antonio Sánchez and Luis Felipe Abad).

- Turn the error on invalid line breaks in uri_list_to_glist into a warning
  (Stephen Watson). Firefox 3.5 upto and including 3.5.2 gets it wrong, but we
  don't want to stop drops working until they fix it.

- Eliminated the duplicated code between pixmap_background_thumb() and
  pixmap_try_thumb(). pixmap_background_thumb() now calls pixmap_try_thumb() to
  get from memory or load from cache (Stephen Watson).

- Added option to place panels under the control of the _NET_WORKAREA property
  (Stephen Watson). Note it only checks the work area at the point it creates
  the panel.

- Fix bug in XDG MIME magic: if two matches at the same priority returned
  exactly the same type, it was considered a conflict (Stephen Watson).

- Newer versions of GTK+ issue warnings if a spin button has a non-zero page
  size (Stephen Watson).

- If a file has a thumbnail, display it in the infobox (Stephen Watson).

Where is the $PATH-Variable for rox-filer set?

Tasklist Doesn't Save Grouping Options

the same application to Always every time I run ROX.

Specifying actions for device nodes

I'd like to set up Rox-filer so that, when I click on a device node in /dev/, it attempts to run pmount on it. I know this is not the "right" way to do the job, but it is much simpler than dealing with the current dbus/udisks/consolekit/policykit mess.

So far, I've managed to create menu options for the device nodes which can run pmount or pumount on them. These work fine. But it seems Rox doesn't support setting a default action for device nodes. Is there a way around this, or will I have to be content with the menu entries?

Xfce4 Applets No Longer Available For ROX

I had to install a new OS after Ubuntu 11.04 borked my graphics driver
or my monitor. When I went to download the Xfce4 weather applet for the
ROX panel I found that the website was unavailable.

So now I have no weather on my panel :-(

Background and Rox

 Can someone explain how I can get nitrogen (my usual background or
wallpaper handler) to work with rox? I have tried running nitrogen
before and after rox but it doesn't seem to have any effect.

By the way I never did sort out why rox was loading two copies of
wbar, my app launcher, so I gave up on rox desktop and am now
running rox-filer alone.

Rox desktop loading double copies of an app launcher

 I dl'ed the scripts for Debian and Ubuntu (to install Rox desktop)
and ran the Debian version this morning on my Sid installation. Seems
fine except rox-session is loading two copies of wbar, an app
launcher.

   I have been in contact with the author of the scripts...he outlined
where Rox looks for autostart info...but so far I've been unable to
convince Rox to only load wbar once.

  Could this be a bug in Rox-session - I am running the OroboRox
window manager with Rox.
