Changes are documented --- cf. `mserver5 --help`, `man mserver5`, `cat monetdb5/ChangeLog.Feb2013` --- and we expect that users upgrading to a new feature release do read release notes (incl. change logs) and can update their systems around MonetDB accordingly.

When using monetdbd &amp;amp; monetdb, these changes are hidden.

It would have been nice if the dbname and or dbfarm options were used,
the user was proactively informed about the deprecation. I don't see why
all in a rush a commandline argument had to be changed -- what does it fix?

Also the commit message is wrong (dbpath =&amp;gt; dbfarm):

I have to agree that these slightly often changes in the command line
options are confusing for the users and not really obvious what purpose
they serve (another example was the removal of the passwd option).

I agree that are minor things, but a consistency on the command line
interface would have been desirable, or at least keep backwards
compatibility.

that's just my thoughts.

passwd was removed for security reasons.

dbfarm &amp;amp; dbname were unified to dbpath to facility multifarm functionality.

We try to stay consistent and keep look&amp;amp;fell, but not it this means security holes or blocking progress.

it's service, then it will work.
Solution 2 = If you are an student and if you are using your own system

start monetdb server. If any only if you are studying monetdb on your

by default, monetdb server listens to port nr. 50000, but it is already used by another process.
most probably, another monetdb server is running, or you have started another process that uses this port nr.

Kind regards,

Jennie

Hello Tapomay,

after looking at your code, I was wondering why you chose the double
management of connections in your Main/JdbcMonetdbTestClient classes.
C3P0 provides a way to define "connection customizers"
(com.mchange.v2.c3p0.ComboPooledDataSource.setConnectionCustomizerClassName(String)),
which you can use to disable autocommit on new connections. This should
simplify your example considerably. Nevertheless, I will try to provoke
the exceptions you have mentioned and see how the JDBC driver handles
them together with C3P0.

Best,

Hannes

with intel i-7 processor, 32GB Ram and 2 TB Harddisk on a Ubuntu 12.10
system. I have a data work load of 700 GB in monetdb now. How can i enhance
the performance and speed up the querying process. Any Suggestions would we

As the source code has many unrelated dependencies I tried to extract the relevant code.
Please find attached an eclipse project for the same.
However I haven't been able to reproduce the issue in this test project. It should give you a fair idea of the sequence of calls made. Plz note that a single insert query used in the live project is much much larger (10K approx.) than the one in the test.?
I reconfirmed that the issue is still there in the larger project.

PS: I had sent this code long back and it got moderated just now(due to some 40KB limit). Thus I have removed the dependencies monetdb-jdbc-2.6.jar and c3p0-0.9.1.2.jar from lib. Plz add them to lib folder and everything should work(after u set the correct DB names in the code).(Anyways this code doesn't reproduce the issue I am facing so I guess just a manual overview should suffice)

Regards,
Tapomay.

The MonetDB team at CWI/MonetDB BV is pleased to announce the
Oct2012-SP2 bugfix release of the MonetDB suite of programs.

More information about MonetDB can be found on our website at

For details on this release, please see the release notes at

   Oct 2012-SP2 bugfix release
SQL *?Fixed crash when performing an INSERT on a table with
string-like column defaulting to NULL and omitting that
                   column from VALUES, bug #3168
Java Module *?Implemented type map support of Connection to allow custom
mapping of UDTs to Java classes. By default the INET and
URL UDTs are now mapped to
                   nl.cwi.monetdb.jdbc.types.{INET,URL}. Most notably,
                   ResultSet.getObject() and PreparedStatement.setObject()
                   deal with the type map.
*?Fixed a problem in PreparedStatement where the prepared
statement's ResultSetMetaData (on its columns to be
produced) incorrectly threw exceptions about non existing
                   columns. Bug #3192

From what I can see in the compilation step output, there's no
reference to the files I added in Makefile.ag. Is this where I'm suppose
to change:

lib__udf = {
         MODULE
         DIR = libdir/monetdb5
         SOURCES = *myfile.c myfile.h *udf.c udf.h udf_impl.h
         LIBS = ../../../../monetdb5/tools/libmonetdb5 \
                    ../../../../gdk/libbat
}

I changed this, called ./configure on the root src of monetdb, and then
recompiled (./make) from the udf folder, but the compilation step
doesn't reference 'myfile' anywhere.

thanks

That indeed shoulds like a possible workaround. We will continue
to search why a 'read only' query set write flags in the transaction
and therefor causes the transaction failure (in the insert query).

Sure, you can run TPC-C, because MonetDB provides ACID properties.
If you want to compare it against e.g. VoltDB, it is like comparing
apples and organges.

For one thing, you should be aware that TPC-C typical uses traditional locking schemes,
while MonetDB uses an optimistic CC, which is not designed for OLTP.

A typical pitfall is to draw conclusions without understanding the design
and their consequences on the application setting.

Okay, I've traced this to the bind_col function in bat_storage.c. It turns
out that this happens with any SELECT, I was probably just more likely to
see it on a SELECT COUNT because that accessed more rows.

bind_col calls bind_ucol which will update the rtime of the column if there
is a transaction in progress and the access level is RD_UPD. I added some
debug logging and found that:

- Running a SELECT COUNT(*) causes bind_col to be called for the first
column in the table
- SELECT * causes bind_col to be called for all columns in the table
- In both cases, update_col is called multiple times for each column, at
least one of which is called with access = RD_UPD

This raises the following questions:

1. What about doing a select causes bind_col to be called with access =
RD_UPD (I'm debugging to find this, but not having much luck right now)

2. Since the problem seems to go away if we're not in a transaction, is
there a way that I can issue read-only queries outside of a transaction?

Thanks,
Percy

Hi Team,

I am trying to run TPC-C benchmark provided by opensource oltpbenchmark (http://oltpbenchmark.com) on MonetDB. But I am getting JDBC Exception while loading the data set:

java.sql.BatchUpdateException: Error(s) occurred while executing the batch, see next SQLExceptions for details
        at nl.cwi.monetdb.jdbc.MonetStatement.executeBatch(MonetStatement.java:209)
Exception in thread "main" java.lang.ArithmeticException: / by zero
        at com.oltpbenchmark.benchmarks.tpcc.TPCCLoader.load(TPCCLoader.java:1857)

Please can you let me know any TPC-C benchmark implementation that is compatible with monetdb?

Thanks.

Kind Regards, Ahmad

I think MonetDB is really not designed to do OLTP.
I think that if you really mean to do OLTP, MonetDB will most probably
not fit.

Thanks Franck for the email. So does it mean that TPC-C benchmark cannot be executed on top of MonetDB?

Dear Miguel

If you use the examples udf extension, then you simply update
the Makefile.ag in the corresponding directory, call configure
and recompile.

Thanks, I missed the 'recompile' step when experimenting.
Although it's compiling ok right now, I'm having a different problem in
finding the udf, but I suppose I must have done something wrong in the code.

Hi Babis,

Thanks for that link! Unfortunately, I think I'm seeing a different
problem, since I'm not actually doing any DDL. I found that the SQL state
I'm getting is 2D000, which seems to correspond to an error in
calling mvc_commit().  Time to debug!

Dear MonetDB Team,

We're starting to exercise our MonetDB installation more heavily now and
I've run into a strange issue where I get an occasional "COMMIT: failed"
message.

It seems that the conditions required to produce this are:

- Concurrently inserting into two different tables
- At the same time, issuing a SELECT COUNT(*) against either of those tables

I've logged a bug with more detailed information, including a Java test
case:

http://bugs.monetdb.org/show_bug.cgi?id=3210

I'm only just starting my investigation, but I suspect that COUNT(*) may be
the culprit, since other selects like SELECT * don't seem to have this
problem.

Does this ring any bells? Are there any special optimizations for COUNT(*)
that bypass the underlying BAT and/or have side effects on some shared
table somewhere that could be causing a concurrency violation?

Thanks,

&lt;/pre&gt;</description>

I couldn't find any existing bugs that cover this, so I logged a new one:

http://bugs.monetdb.org/show_bug.cgi?id=3208

This is kind of a show-stopper for me right now, so I'm hoping that someone
might have some idea where to start looking for a solution. I'm debugging
sql_scenario.c right now, but it'll take me some time to get familiar with
the code.

Cheers,

I'm still searching for user documentation that would
explain MonetDB/octopus usage/feature.

Does any exist?

Thanks,
Masood

P.S.
My earlier e-mails regarding the octopus documentation was somewhat rushed,
it seems.
The documentation in the man pages are actually for remtoe access and
funnel-multiplex features, which seem entirely different.
