FM9: odd dialogue on file launch - file sharing issue

<pre>I've just moved one of our desks from an iMac to an Air, and did a complete file transfer. Only major change was OS from 10.6 to 10.8 (big change)

FM9 was also moved, but had to be reinstalled, which required a call to FM headquarters and a new serial number being issued. (something about a server no longer dealing with OS9 serials.) Anyhow, excluding that little wrinkle, everything seemed to have gone well.

"Seemed" being operative. Now, when I launch our main FM file, I get an odd dialogue: "Filemaker cannot share files because another user is already sharing files using Filemaker Pro on this computer." This is not the case. Also, I have checked FM file sharing (enabled) and OS preferences, where file sharing is enabled. I have renewed DHCP. And it is true: file sharing is not possible... I cannot see this database on the LAN.

Help?

<pre>I have a client that uses Filemaker 12v4 server with Filemaker 12v4 clients all running on 10.8.3. When they first open the remote file all works great. But after a while (haven't figured out exact parameters) it seems like it "stops listening" to the server and changes made on other computers do not show up on all computers.

Scenario.
- validate that no computers are set to sleep.
- Start 8 different FMP12 clients (Most on 10.8.3, but a couple on 10.6.8).

Testing
- Make a change to some data on one computer, Validate it shows all all computers. (It does).
- Make a change to the layout on one computer. Validate it shows all all computers. (It does).

So all is as it should be...

- Wait a magic while (usually overnight, but not always....)
- Do the testing...Both tests fail on SOME, but not all.
- Close the database on computer that fails
- reopen the database on computer that fails
- Do the testing...Both tests fail on this same computer.
- Quit filemaker and open database on computer that fails
- All is well again!

Argghhh!

If anyone has any ideas please yell.

The client machine is running windows server 2003
All of the necessary permissions have been set and the server software set
to enable odbc permissions
The port forwarding is working correctly as the port (2399) is showing up as
open and listening

Every time we try to connect from the windows machine
[data direct] [ODBC Sequel link driver] [sequelLink client]TCP/IP error

I have looked up this error message and it states that there is no service

It would therefore appear that the xDBC plugin isn't working correctly
does anyone know how to test that the xDBC plugin in the extensions folder
is working properly or any other ideas as to what could be causing this

comments in scripts

<pre>Hi Experts

Here's a question from 3 am, so I hope it's not too silly or trivial!

Does the number of comment lines in a script have any significant bearing on the time taken to process that script? I use a great deal of comment lines (in fact I'd love Comment to be the first line of the Script Steps list, and even that the first line of an 'empty' script was a comment line), and I wondered if it was possible to have too many? Obviously if I make the person reading it, if it isn't me, scroll too much just to read a few lines, they may well curse me for it in the short term, but will it have any processing impact?

Cheers

Colm

Multivariable madness and relationships

<pre>Hello,

I am getting back to FM PRO after a long hiatus and I am trying to build a payroll/billing database for a small construction company. Everything has been running smoothly till I hit a snag with establishing my work rates. Currently I have 4 tables: (Employee,Equipment, Usage, Rate). I think there is a very simple answer to my problem but I am drawing a blank on how to make it all work properly.

Each week I get an excel spreadsheet which has each employee's name, project number, construction specialty, standard time hours and over time hours for each day during the week. I keep all the general employee data in the employee table and it is related to the usage table via an shared employee id number. Where things get tricky is with regard to the rates of pay for the various hours and projects.

For instance, an employee could be a welder on one job but since we are a union company, they might be a welder steward on another job meaning they are entitled to a different pay scale and I have to keep the jobs separate for billing purposes. Laborers are paid differently from welders and machine operators and so forth. The other variable that impacts the finding of the proper rate of pay has to do with the job. Some projects pay a welder at one rate while another project pays him/her at a slightly different rate. All told the variables include, the project number, the employee's job classification, the project that he or she is working on and whether or not they are working standard time or over time.

My first attempt at addressing this issue revolved around creating a calculation based on a CASE formula. This worked except it seems very inefficient. There are 13 pay grades for just one project so that makes for a very long formula and something that would be very difficult for other members of my staff to adjust when rates changed or even a new classification of workers was made. IT also means that every time I add another project I have to make even more significant adjustments to the formula, making it longer and ever more prone to errors.

My second attempt was to create the rates table and then relate that to the usage table. Each job classification has a record in the rates table that includes the rate for standard time and over time for a particular project. I am absolutely drawing a blank on how I can relate the employee and his/her personnel data with the appropriate rate of pay to ensure that my welder on job 5 is paid $40/hr for standard time and $56/hour for over time and that he/she is paid a different set of rates for being the welder steward on job 7.

My workflow plan was based on the idea that each week I would import the employee work hours into the Usage table and the database would look-up or calculate the proper rate for each employee based on the project and job classification and would then produce a billing list for me to send to our main contractor. (i.e. Bob Smith work 40 hours straight time and 10 hours over time and was paid at "x" and "y" rate for a total cost for the week of "z".

My apologies for the long email. I feel like I knew how to do this once upon a time in FM 6 and 7 but that knowledge appears to have escaped me. Suggestions would be most appreciated.

Are owners of AutoNavigator satisfied with it? The demo movie looks quite compelling, but I also see the current version is 7 years old. It's advertised as v12 compatible, but that might just demonstrate that the original concept and implementation was solid and therefore never needed incremental updates.

If I'm building v12 solutions exclusively, are there competing solutions for automated navigation building?

Thanks for any feedback!

However none of the calculations in the sub summary automatically change, I have to click through each field.

How do I tell FileMaker i want all calculations to be automatic, including those in the subsummary.

Thanks for all the answers . . .one final(?) question: Is it necessary,
with a 2 machine solution, to have IIS installed on both machines, even
though 1 of them will not make use of it?

Keep in mind, I am using the "alternative deployment", with the WPE and FMS
on the same machine. (and the web server on the separate machine.)

So another way to phrase my question is: Does the WPE require IIS to be
around, even though the actual web site will be on a different computer?

Thanks,

I had thought that the WPE had to somehow "know" what Web Server it was

idea.

Excel PMT() function (X post)

<pre>Hi all

The PMT() function in Excel has two extra parameters compared to the
equivalent in FileMaker.

These are fv (future value) and type (0 for payments in arrears as in a
standard loan and 1 for payments in advance as in a lease)

After many hours spent attempting to get this Excel function to do what I
want, I have finally succeeded. Now I need to convert this to FileMaker Pro
(12).

Does anyone have a custom function that will do similar?

I have tried Michael Myett's "Monthly Payment ( Loan Amount ; APR ; Term ;
Days To First Payment )" function but it looks like it only works
for initial periods of greater than 30 days.

I need one that will work for weekly, fortnightly or monthly rentals with
an initial rental payable on the day the goods are financed. This rental
may be larger than the standard monthly rental (In the trade we call this a
large initial rental). This will be entered by the user if required. I can
code around this.

What I want is a function to calculate the payments based on:
Lease amount $55000
Residual $5000
Initial rental $10000
Term 48 months (ie 47 payments plus initial rental)
Rate 30.21%
In Excel function PMT ( rate ; nper ; pv ; fv ; type ), I
enter PMT(30.21%/12 ; 47 ; (55000 - 10000 - 5000) ; 5000 ; 1 ) which gives
me a result of $1480.63 as the monthly rentals.

I can send the spraedsheet if required.

Any takers?

Trouble with Importing

<pre>Quick Question -

I've taken the "Contacts" DB that comes as a FM template and customized it
to meet the needs of our organization. We are a non-profit that raises our
own support. Therefore, in our contacts DB, we keep track of who donates,
how often, etc. I added a table to keep up with that information. One one
of my layout pages, I have a portal that lists the info we need concerning
each individual's donations.

When I have an empty database, everything works great. I use myself as a
test and it creates a record just fine. When I get to the giving portal, I
am able to enter the information with no problem.

The issue is that when we import records from an older database, it does not
create a record ID for them and therefore it will not let me enter any
information in the donation portal area.

I get this error: This field cannot be modified until “DONOR_ID” is given a
valid value.

I'm still trying to learn the basic of FileMaker and thought I could figure
this one out. Apparently not, so I'm submitting this to the experts!!
Thanks for your help!

Excel PMT() function (X post)

<pre>Hi all

The PMT() function in Excel has two extra parameters compared to the equivalent in FileMaker.

These are fv (future value) and type (0 for payments in arrears as in a standard loan and 1 for payments in advance as in a lease)

After many hours spent attempting to get this Excel function to do what I want, I have finally succeeded. Now I need to convert this to FileMaker Pro (12).

Does anyone have a custom function that will do similar?

I have tried Michael Myett's "Monthly Payment ( Loan Amount ; APR ; Term ; Days To First Payment )" function but it looks like it only works for initial periods of greater than 30 days.

I need one that will work for weekly, fortnightly or monthly rentals with an initial rental payable on the day the goods are financed. This rental may be larger than the standard monthly rental (In the trade we call this a large initial rental). This will be entered by the user if required. I can code around this.

What I want is a function to calculate the payments based on:
Lease amount $55000
Residual $5000
Initial rental $10000
Term 48 months (ie 47 payments plus initial rental)
Rate 30.21%
In Excel function PMT ( rate ; nper ; pv ; fv ; type ), I enter PMT(30.21%/12 ; 47 ; (55000 - 10000 - 5000) ; 5000 ; 1 ) which gives me a result of $1480.63 as the monthly rentals.

I can send the spreadsheet if required.

Any takers?

TIA

<pre>Hi Listers,

I have a 190 mb file I want to transfer from Mac desktop to my iPad for testing

When I try I get:
"FileName" could not be copied because you do not have permissions to see its contents"

I've not seen this before, nor have I ever had problems transferring files.

Any thoughts anyone ?

TIA

FM 12 Closes upon trying to Open a local or hosted file

<pre>We have been running FM 9 server Advanced and FM 9 for several years
upgrading from 5 as new version have become available. We are now moving to
FM12 but one our main server we cannot open any FM files (they have been
converted correctly and opened sucessfully on Windows/MAC and Linux
locally). Our environment and details are as follows:

   1. VM (Virtual Machine) Server 2003 SP2 – running Terminal Services
   2. Virtual environment – VMWare 5
   3. Active Directory, IIS
   4. Tried disabling Symantec Endpoint Small business (ver 12) &amp; also
   Windows firewall
   5. Dual CPU + 4GB RAM
   6. Installed apps – thinprint 7.6, Office 2003, Quickbooks 2010-11,
Adobe Acrobat 9 Pro, Acrobat reader 8
   7. FMP 9 works fine
   8. All of FM 9 files were uninstalled &amp; installed FMP 12
   9. FMP 12 opens fine, but it doesn’t open any DB, including any blank DB
on the desktop. FM crashes. Have done multiple restarts yet no luck.
   10. FMP 12 worked fine on another server with similar config but didn’t
have many apps as the problem server

Now we appreciate that Server 2008 is preferred but testing locally worked
fine and we are planned to upgrade in the new finacial year. Has anyone
experienced similar issues or can point us to a possible conflict before we
go through the very lengthy process of unistalling all other programmes
that are linkedinto the server and solution?

Any thoughts greatly appreciated,

Stephen Bennett

Conditional Formatting query

<pre>Hi Experts

I have a table with eight pairs of fields - one is a description, and the other is a colour. The colour field is not visible, it's just used for conditional formatting. At least it would be, if I could get it to work!! Please could some kind soul have a look at this for me?

Their names are like this:

Hour[n]Description
Hour[n]Colour

where [n] is a number from 1 to 8 (these represent hours during a working day).

The possible colours are Amber, Green and Red.

The idea is that with a particular Description field selected, a button would call a script to change the colour of the field's background by setting the associated Colour field to one of the three colours, and then the colour background would be changed using Conditional Formatting.

This is the script:

--------------------------------------------------
Set Variable [$Colour; Value:Get ( ScriptParameter )]
Set Variable [$FieldName; Value:"DesignDays_gDesignDiaryDesigners_gDisplay:" &amp; ( Get ( ActiveFieldName ) )]
Set Variable [$ColourFieldName; Value:Substitute ( $FieldName; "Description"; "Colour"]
#
Set Field By Name [$ColourFieldName; $Colour]
#
Commit Records/Requests []
--------------------------------------------------

This script does work, and the colour field's contents are successfully changed.

And this is one of the three Conditional Formatting calculations to change the background colour:

--------------------------------------------------
Let (
[
     ActiveFieldName = Get ( ActiveFieldName );
     ColourFieldName = Substitute ( ActiveFieldName; "Description"; "Colour" );
     Colour = Evaluate ( ColourFieldName )
];
     Colour = "Green"
)
--------------------------------------------------

What I mean by "not working" is that the field's background colour doesn't change. The 'Commit Records' is 'just in case'!

Assuming that either what I want to do isn't possible, or I'm doing something really stupid, I'm hoping for the latter!

Who knows, perhaps there may be a FieldColor text formatting function in FMP13, and maybe even 'Perform Script By Name' and 'Set Variable By Name'!

TIA

Cheers

Colm
