POM inconsistencies: <license> vs. <!-- Sakai copyright statement -->

There are 491 pom.xml files in trunk; of these 31 include a <!--
copyright statement --> of the type that graces our Java class
files. I'd like to remove these statements in order to maintain 1)
consistency across poms as well as eliminate 2) redundancy, given
that the Maven POM definition includes a <license> element that we
define in our base pom.xml.

The Maven way: http://maven.apache.org/pom.html#Licenses

(as evidenced in our base pom.xml):

<licenses>
     <license>
       <name>Educational Community License, Version 2.0</name>
       <url>http://www.osedu.org/licenses/ECL-2.0</url>
       <distribution>svn</distribution>
     </license>
   </licenses>

The few projects where the "copyright" poms reside are as follows:

content-review
mailtool
osp
rwiki
samples
usermembership

The osp poms in particular could use a bit of tidying up since their
copyright statements include $URL and $Id references that suggest a
content project ancestry:

<!--
   ~
************************************************************************
*********
   ~ $URL: https://source.sakaiproject.org/svn/content/trunk/content-
api/api/src/java/org/sakaiproject/content/api/ContentCollection.java $
   ~ $Id: ContentCollection.java 8537 2006-05-01 02:13:28Z
jimeng< at >umich.edu $
   ~
************************************************************************
**********

. . . -->

We have not defined any best practice in this area as regards pom
files and references to our copyright. Both polls and the
emailtemplateservice poms offer variations on the Maven approach (see
below), making use of the <comments> element to embed portions or all
of the copyright statement. Whether embedding <license> information
explicitly in all pom.xml files is necessary or simply rely on base
pom inheritance is a subject worth discussing. I would think that in
most cases the latter approach is sufficient, i.e., relying on
inheritance, but others may prefer a more explicit approach,
especially as we consider a gradual decoupling of our monolithic
release process as has been achieved recently with the kernel.

           </comments>
       </license>
   </licenses>

In any case I prefer the Maven way over inclusion of the <!--
Copyright . . . . --> statement as has been adopted by a minority of
projects. I plan to jira the removal of the <!-- Copyright . . . --
> statement from the 29 pom.xml files that include it, starting the
cleanup by Thursday, if there are no objections.

Cheers,

Anthony

It appears that Sakai is making a new connection for a request every time it needs to get someone's name from our LDAP server (which is *frequently*). This is eating up valuable resources. Are there any experts out there who are aware of this and know of a solution? Some caching mechanism perhaps?

We're running 2.4.x now but will be on 2.5.3 in January.

Based on comments from Stuart and Seth I revised the main SVN
visualization and removed the "local branch" commits from my list. It
was not amazingly significant - but it was about 10% of overall
commits. The graph is not tremendously different - but it is better
than my first version:

Thanks for Seth and Stuart to look it over and I am open to more
suggestions if you see something incorrect or misleading.

Here are all the vizualizations:

How to Include Local Jars

I recently wrote a Course Management sync job to migrate data from our SIS
tables to Sakai's CM tables. To do so, I needed to use some jar files
which contained DAOs to our local databases. I configured these DAOs
using spring in the cm-impl components.xml file. When I deployed my
Course Management sync job to our development environment and brought
Sakai up, I got several NoClassDefFound errors. I got around these by
manually copying our local DAO jar files to shared/lib and the necessary
JDBC files to common/lib. After that Sakai started normally and my job
ran properly.

My question for the dev community is, did I handle this properly? Is
manually copying files to shared/lib and common/lib a good solution or is
there a better way to package jars that I need with the sakai project I'm
working with? Any insights would be much appreciated.

Pre-Configured Web Content Tool

Hi all,

We're trying to add a "Pre-configured" web content tool to a 2.5.2
instance. I followed the instructions that Steve put together at:
http://bugs.sakaiproject.org/confluence/display/~sswinsb2< at >une.edu.au/Pre-configured+web+content+tools

After following the instructions, our current experience goes as follows:

1. Go to Site Info > Edit Tools, the tool shows up in the list.
2. Select the tool and continue
3. It asks for a Title and a URL, the fields are not pre-filled, they are
blank.
4. I hit continue without filling in the fields
5. The summary of what I added indicates that two Web Content tools are
being added, I hit Finish.

My tool list is then populated with 2 Web Content tools (as promised by
the preview), and the page name is "Web Content", which is not what I
specified as the 'title' in the tool properties. The tools DO in fact go
to the URL that I specified in the sakai.properties according to the
instructions.

Have there been any changes in how this process works by any chance? I've
attached the tool XML file, as well as the filter-mapping and servlet
segments in web.xml.

Hi

A while back there was a thread that mentioned some issues with
javax.mail 1.3.1 (the version in Sakai).

http://thread.gmane.org/gmane.comp.cms.sakai.devel/14287/focus=14288

Now version 1.4.1 has been out for over a year and was wondering if we
should:

1) Look at upgrading or
2) moving the mail jar out of shared (so other projects can use an
uptodate version)

Now it seems from Ian's comments in the above thread that the real issue
is activation which we would have to update from 1.0.2 to 1.1. An I
presume this is why mail has to be in shared in the first place. Now
what are the implications of upgrading activation?

for those interested the reason I'm asking is I've been battling with
what could be:
http://bugs.sun.com/view_bug.do?bug_id=6456422
Seeing as I can't upgrade mail its been tricky to rule it out ...

How to pass an http parameter in JSF to the backing bean

Hi people,

I was trying to pass an http parameter to a JSF backing bean in sakai.
Something like this:

http://server:port/portal/site/siteId/page/pageId?toolstate-toolpid=/newpage?param=value

It works! Using this url, I can get the parameter via
request.getParameter. But I need to pass the value to my Backing Bean
now. So, the problem starts here. I cannot fill a JSF field with this
value, and consequently, the value is not passed to my backing bean.

I tried many solutions and a common error is: ERROR: Faces context not
found. getResponseWriter will fail. Check if the FacesServlet has been
initialized at all in your web.xml. But I did initialize FacesServlet
in my web.xml.

Using a JSP page, the parameter is passed to the backing bean, but the
application can't find FacesContext anymore. And my application was
developed using JSF.

Has anyone faced the same problem?

Thanks,
Flávia.

hi,

Does Anyone Know how the presentation tool will work? I followed the steps
Steps:
1. In the "Resource" tool of a worksite, create a directory called "presentations"
2. In the "presentations" folder, create a subdirectory
3. In the subdirectory, place a bunch of image files.
4. Go to the "Presentation" tool and click "Refresh" if necessary.

If i click the "presentations" tool it shows like this"Presentations folder does not exist in Resources".

Can anyone help me?

Vendor Dropping FCK Plugins

Hello,

I'm wondering how schools using extra FCK Editor plugins have integrated
them with their vendor drops, especially if those FCK plugins are
modules in source.sakaiproject.org.

I'm wondering if the best thing to do is:
- vendor drop the FCK Plugin
- incorporate that into the 'reference' module vendor drop via a
external or svn copy from the FCK Plugin drop.

Any suggestion/ideas/links to existing practices doing it appreciated.

Versioned Cheers,
Steve

Hi,

Here's an update of the first steps towards a configurable evaluation
workflow for OSP. The work requirements, concepts and examples are
gathered at:

This is done with help of the people who are tuning in on the weekly OSP

workflow 'evaluation centric' are welcome to chime in ;-)

Hi,
I am trying to find out validation for creating a new user in sakai. If
you don't enter user detail in the form and click on "Save Details" button
while creating new user, you see an alert on top of the form. Can't find
out corresponding code which is executing on click event. If I see the
page source, I find following line:
<form name="user-create_edit" id="user-create_edit"
action="http://localhost:8080/portal/tool/!gateway-710?panel=Main"
method="post">
But can't locate the file specified in action attribute.

I need to also find out following information:
-> Where is the corresponding java script file.
-> What happened after java script validation and how user details get
saved into database.
-> How can I trace the flow?
-> What all files gets executed for creating a new user.

I have looked at the .vm files from
"C:\sakai-src-2.5.3\user\user-tool\tool\src\webapp\vm\user", but cannot
understand them.

Is there any book for learning .vm programming?

Please, give me adequate direction on this situation.

Best Regards,
Indrani Nondy

I am preparing for my social computing course (SI301) in the winter -
so I am doing some playing with tools using Sakai Commit data as my
playground.

I have a few graphs up (more coming) and an SQLite3 database to play
with here:

http://www-personal.umich.edu/~csev/sakai/data/

There are three cool graphs so far.
Main SVN versus Contrib
Monthly commits to both repositories
Monthly commits to the main SVN
I produce the graphs using Python scripts reading SQLite3 databases
and display them using the Google Visualization API.

It would be much appreciated if someone took a look at the actual data
in the database and let me know if there were some grievous errors in
my data.
