[fcrepo-user] Where do people store XSLTs used by theirdisseminators?

I am curious about what strategies people use on where to store files
(such as XSLTs) that are used by their disseminations.

which is one method used, especially if the XSLT might be used by multiple
SDeps or Content Models. In this strategy, would standard practice be to
store all the files for a specific SDep in a single FDO or give each their
own FDO?

If specific XSLTs are only used by a specific Content Model or SDep, is
there any issue with storing it in the SDep object itself? It seems like
a logical place to store files used by the deployment without requiring a
separate object(s), but maybe there are performance, logistical or common
fedora practices that suggest against this.

I've tried both methods and both work. I'm just not sure if there is a
reason to prefer one over the other.

Any input or commentary is appreciated.

[fcrepo-user] Using fedora-rebuild.sh on remote Mulgara 2.1.13triple-store

Are there any known issues with running fedora-rebuild.sh on Mulgara 2.1.13?

We have setup Mulgara 2.1.13 in its own JVM on the same server as Fedora.

The fedora program to rebuild the Mulgara triple-store (fedora-rebuild.sh) builds the triple-store without displaying warnings or errors. Fedora's tomcat starts up and the triples can be viewed and changed using fedora REST interfaces: admin and risearch.

However, the Mulgara data directory (/app/local/mulgara/fedora/) is now empty. Using the find command, I did not find any active "lucene" directories on the file system. After Fedora and Mulgara are shut down and restarted, the triples are gone.

When an object is changed through the admin interface, Mulgara builds the data directory with lucene, temp, xaStatementStore and xaStringPool directories. After restarting Fedora and Mulgara , the triples in the triple-store remain.

Hi there,
I'm starting to tinker with Fedora and trying to write a CMA workflow.
I'm building a digital object that should grab an image datastream from
an HTTPS server which requires basic authentication.
I tried inserting the authentication data in the URL for the datastream,
but now I have 2 problems:
1) Username and password are stored in plain text in the FOXML, visible
by everyone who looks up that record in Fedora, as well as all over the
logs.
2) I still can't connect to the server this way. The server's
certificate is expired, I don't know if that plays a role.

Fedora throws this error:

ERROR 2013-05-09 11:04:28.618 [http-8080-1] (BaseRestResource)

And the image server's Apache error log:

Of course, I can always use a redirect datastream and let the client
deal with authentication and SSL, but I'd like to hide the source URI if
possible.

Dear Repository Community,

Open Repositories 2013 is coming up soon - July 8-12 in beautiful Prince Edward Island. We had an awesome response to the request for proposals and an initial list of sessions is available at:

http://or2013.net/content/accepted-sessions

We are also getting final details in place for the Hackfest and Dev Challenge, but in the meantime we have an initial information page available at:

http://or2013.net/content/or-2013-dev-challenge-event

The Conference team is working hard on making sure the facilities are ready and that you also have an engaging set of social activities to meet with your colleagues and have fun. We want to encourage you to take advantage of our Early Bird registration, valid until May 10, after which the fee will go from $450 to $495. We would also encourage you to book your flights and accommodation as soon as you can to make sure you get a front row seat for what is shaping up to be a great conference. The main conference hotel (The Delta) will be releasing room held back for OR attendees by May 10, so if you wish to stay at the Conference hotel this is your chance to guarantee that will happen.

Hi all,
I'm working on an Islandora install, using Fedora 3.5, on a Windows IIS7
server.

I've been having an ongoing issue with getting Islandora running, but I
think I've traced the problem back to something specific with Fedora.
Fedora doesn't seem to be able to view the TN datastream (a thumbnail PNG
image that Islandora uses). If I browse around in Fedora, I can view all
Islandora datastreams except for the TN, which for islandora:root is a
folder PNG. When I try to see that in the browser (i.e., http://[ip
redacted]:8080/fedora35/objects/islandora:root/datastreams/TN/content) I
get an error in Firefox (in IE, I just get the broken image box with a red
X):

'The image “http://[ip
redacted]:8080/fedora35/objects/islandora:root/datastreams/TN/content”
cannot be displayed because it contains errors.'

I know this sort of error can have a lot of causes. I've personally seen
something like it when I was working with some images that had been saved
with a CMYK color scheme. But in this case it seems that the image is
either being truncated or there's some other configuration problem with
Fedora which prevents it from being served. I'm pretty new to Fedora and
unfortunately I don't know how to go about diagnosing the problem in
further detail or fixing it. Any suggestions?

Some additional observations:
--Nothing shows up in the Fedora or Tomcat logs when this error occurs.
--I can see the image fine if I don't go through Fedora, i.e., http://[site
name]/[path to image]/folder.png
--I thought perhaps there was some PNG-specific issue, so I tried embedding
the folder image into a Tomcat page
($CATALINA_HOME/webapps/ROOT/index.html), but when I go to localhost:8080
it shows up.

Thanks for any help.

AIM AND SCOPE

The sharing and re-use of research information is becoming an
increasingly important aspect of scientific activity. Text
publications are – and will be at least for the near future – the
predominant way of publishing research output and challenges still
exist for their optimal recording and dissemination. Meanwhile,
scientific communities recognize the immense significance of storing,
discovering, processing, preserving and re-using data sets as well as
other types of research objects like workflows and software.
Furthermore, Public Sector Information, potentially valuable for
research purposes, is provided openly by governments although not
always in forms that enable re-use.

Metadata is a critical factor in this area, actually providing the
means to promote black-box digital files to discoverable and re-usable
objects. A key requirement is capturing and disseminating rich
descriptions of research output in standard, semantically clear forms,
including contextual and provenance information, such as relationships
of publications and data sets with people, organisations, funding
information, facilities and equipment. This metadata needs to be some
extent independent of a particular research domain, to foster
collaboration and re-use of data sets across disciplines and vertical
communities, while still allowing the recording and utilization of
domain-specific information. A range of open issues have to be
addressed towards these goals.

The aim of this Special Track is to serve as a forum for experts to
present recent results and experiences, establish liaisons with other
groups and reflect on the state-of-the-art of metadata and semantic
aspects of open repositories, research information systems and data
infrastructures.

Hello all,

We are using Fedora 3.5 as the repository in our digital object management system with Mulgara as triple store.
We have at the moment about 300 million triples within the Mulgara triple store and are concerned that there might be some limitation on the amount of triples that are feasible to store in Mulgara. We have seen that there are statements made that Mulgara only scales to about 500 million triples (W3C Wiki) and would like to know if somebody else have experienced any limitations with Mulgara? If so, is the best alternative to move to MPT Triple store or should we consider something else?

Best regards,

Hi all,

successfully installed. I have copied the old datastreams and objects
folders on the new system, but when I try to run fedora-rebuild.sh, it
fails with the following error (after having worked correctly for a
number of demo objects):

Rebuild failed:

I can't figure out what the problem might be...
Any help is really appreciated!

java.security.InvalidAlgorithmParameterException: the trustAnchors parameter must be non-empty

fedoraBase in fgsconfig-basic.properties is set to https and tomcat has a self signed cert. Shouldn't matter as I'm pointing the keystore/truststore at the tomcat ones.

Hello,

I've spent some time looking at akubra and the HashPathIdMapper to get a
feel for how we would distribute our datastreamStore over multiple file
systems. The default configuration (##) creates 256 potential directories.
Changing that to # (or something like #/##) would give us 16 top level
sub-directories, which we could work with. However, there is another
issue, in that I don't see how we can easily predict how each of those
directories would grow, if I am understanding how the files are distributed
across the directories.

I assume one solution might involve sym linking the top level directories
over to a few directories that each correspond to a mount point.

Have other people tackled this particular problem (and what solutions did
you come up with) or found another way around distributing large amounts of
Fedora data over multiple mount points? Thanks in advance.

Having no luck finding examples or documentation that use such a
mechanism, I thoughtI
Would ask this list:

Is it possible for the output of one disseminator to be fed as input (a
param) to another disseminator? I have only begun working with Fedora and
find myself wanting to do this.

For example: having a disseminator based on the Fedora Research Index
Search (risearch) produce xml from a query and feed that xml to a
disseminator based on XSLT to process it and output a web page.

If it is possible, are there any drawbacks to doing it? (performance or
otherwise)

If it is not possible, what are my options for such an operation? Would I
need to code external web service where I could use the REST API to make
the query and manipulate the result? Which seems like overkill in a lot
of cases where I just would like to create friendly html output that
non-technical people could use to see certain data about a collection's
objects.

I would rather not statically code the results of such a risearch query
into a XML Datastream in the object which would then need to be kept in
sync with the object if it changes. (This is how something like this is
done in the Image Collection demo that distributes with Fedora - a static
LIST datastream exists that is then fed to and XSLT disseminator to create
a web page.)

Thanks in advance for any answers to someone fairly new to Fedora.

*Looking into the Future of DSpace and Fedora*
*The 2013 DuraSpace Sponsors Summit Meeting Report*

*Winchester, MA* Earlier this month DuraSpace hosted a 2-day Sponsor
Summit Meeting for more than 60 sponsors from 54 organizations in Baltimore
to "move the needle" towards a digital future that meets shared needs
through investment in DSpace and Fedora. Meeting materials are available
here:

Summit Overview: http://bit.ly/YcEri5
Presentation slides: http://slidesha.re/XsWryN
Agenda and Attendees: http://bit.ly/YcE4Ej

The meeting began with a reminder that the DuraSpace mission goes beyond
the development of DSpace and Fedora–it is about a larger commitment to our
shared digital future. DuraSpace provides stewardship for open source
projects and develops innovative services used by the community, but is not
solely a software development organization. DuraSpace board president James
Hilton offered an ecosystem diagram mapping out a "digital preservation
stack" that included initiatives, organizations, consortia and code in four
layers–access repositories, preservation repositories, DPN (Digital
Preservation Network) backbone, and code–to illustrate where DuraSpace fits
in.

DuraSpace plays a key role in supporting the building blocks–successful
open source projects–of the emerging digital preservation ecosystem.
Investment in DuraSpace supports the organization's contribution towards
building community capacity for providing long term access and preservation
of digital data.

"Without the stack there is no Digital Preservation Network," Hilton
explained, "DPN needs repositories. Is the value proposition worth it to
the DSpace and Fedora communities,"?

Michele Kimpton, Chief Executive Officer and Jonathan Markow, Chief
Community Strategist, followed up with the history and current state of
financial support for DSpace and Fedora. They made the case for developing
collaborative community investment strategies to reinvigorate DSpace and
Fedora development beyond what DuraSpace can provide. Kimpton went on to
debunk five myths about what the DuraSpace organization is and does.

• Myth 1: DuraSpace has teams of developers working on DSpace and Fedora.

*Reality: DuraSpace provides leadership and coordination for software
development but does not do the actual development. A distributed volunteer
team of developers from several institutions contribute the code for DSpace
and Fedora releases.*

• Myth 2: DuraSpace is funded by the Moore Foundation and others.

*Reality: While DuraSpace has received generous support from the Moore
Foundation, the Mellon Foundation, the Library of Congress and the Sloan
Foundation, these foundations do not support the ongoing maintenance,
improvement and management of DSpace or Fedora.*

• Myth 3: DuraSpace is DSpace on Fedora.

*Reality: DuraSpace is an organization providing support for DSpace and
Fedora open source software development. The organization is not a piece of
software and currently there are no plans to merge the two platforms.*

• Myth 4: Our sponsorship dollars are funding DuraCloud.

*Reality: DuraCloud is funded by revenues from the sale of the DuraCloud
service and some specifically designated grants. Sponsorship dollars
support DSpace and Fedora platforms solely.*

• Myth 5: Bringing on more projects reduces effort on existing projects.

*Reality: New projects pay their own way to be part of the DuraSpace
organization. All revenue collected by and for new projects is used for the
support of those projects. Sponsorship dollars do not support new projects.*

Jonathan Markow reminded the group,"Each of you owns the Fedora and DSpace
code to the degree you participate in developing and utilizing the open
source software. You all own Fedora and DSpace."

At the end of this session the group was urged to put a timeframe on the
process for moving forward. Sayeed Choudhury, Johns Hopkins University,
said, "There is urgency. Data is being destroyed right now." While
scientific integrity has widespread support, technology and resources to
preserve data and other scholarly assets in repositories are often lacking.

*Governance*

The need for new community governance models for the DSpace and Fedora
projects was generally acknowledged. The aim of improved project governance
is to balance raising the funds required for ongoing software development
from institutions that have the ability to provide resources with the needs
of institutions that rely on the software to operate repositories,
regardless of their ability to provide funds. Currently 93% of all known
institutions using DSpace or Fedora are "free riders"– those who do not
contribute towards sponsorship or contribute code to either project. To
engage those who have not yet become sponsors effective governance
solutions that include processes for broad communication, project
sustainability, accountability and a clear direction for the projects will
be reviewed by DSpace and Fedora communities. The goal of new governance
models is to fully integrate the DSpace and Fedora communities into the
process actively "owning" the most widely-used repository platforms in the
world.

*What's next for Fedora?*

Last summer a group of Fedora community stakeholders began talking about
how they might come together to make long overdue changes to the
10-year-old Fedora platform. Functionally and technically the existing code
could not meet emerging use cases. The "community-managed projects" concept
was discussed and as a result several stakeholders came to DuraSpace to
talk about making significant contributions to improving Fedora right away.
Issues around performance, fault tolerance and scalability; complexity,
updating the aging code base and how to engage a larger pool of active
developers are currently being addressed by the "Fedora Futures" team. The
team plans to unveil an alpha version of Fedora 4.0 for community testing
and feedback at the Open Repositories Conference <http://or2013.net> (OR2013)
in July.

The Fedora Futures<https://wiki.duraspace.org/display/FF/Fedora+Futures+Home>
project
plans to engage users and developers at all institutional levels in
technical and non-technical tasks. "Fedora Futures is not happening in a
dark room," said Rob Cartalano, Columbia University. "We are working to
find ways to bring it to the larger community, including establishing a
community governance structure."

Fedora stakeholders who were at the Sponsor Summit Meeting decided on the
following specific next steps:

• The Fedora Futures Steering Group along with sponsor volunteers from the
Fedora community will work towards articulating a vision for Fedora, a
mission and a governance model
• Look for effective ways to make the case for fulfilling the vision to
senior management emphasizing that Fedora fills a critical need
--Fedora is a solution worth investing in; as a group we can figure out
what’s needed to make Fedora work; Fedora is under-recognized; if we can
make the value proposition clear, resources will follow
--Create a united front for ongoing advocacy
• Figure out how to step-up communications with other sponsors and
potential sponsors
• The Fedora Futures Steering Group along with sponsor volunteers will
propose a few alternative models for governance to the wider group of
sponsors and the Fedora community for consideration

*What's next for DSpace?*

Following discussions meeting participants representing institutions that
were using DSpace decided to collaboratively draft a high-level 3-5 year
"vision" for DSpace. The community will be asked to review the new vision
statement in the coming months. This non-technical, detailed statement will
make the case for the important role DSpace plays within the "ecosystem" of
scholarly communications and preservation targeting decision makers who
have the ability to earmark funds to support the future of DSpace.

DSpace stakeholders who were at the Sponsor Summit Meeting decided on the
following specific next steps:

• Develop a compelling high-level vision for DSpace for the next 3-5 years.
--This non-technical, but sufficiently detailed vision statement will be
developed to appeal to library directors (or similar) to obtain
funding/resources
--This vision will position DSpace within the larger "ecosystem" of
scholarly communication and preservation
• A small group will meet in Chicago in the coming months to draft a vision
statement to be distributed for broader feedback from Committers, DCAT and
the community
• Once a vision statement is in place a "Governing Board"/"Steering
Committee" of institutions will be required to execute it. The goal of this
group will be to help make the DSpace vision a reality and to find the
funding/resources to make it happen
• The "Steering Committee" would likely consist of a mixture of university
librarians, repository managers and and technologists.
--Members of the Steering Committee would likely be those who are willing
to provide extra funds or resources to apply towards making the vision a
reality. Members may also include individuals who are "voted in" by the
Community.
• A governance structure will be designed to work in conjunction with
DSpace Committers and DCAT.
--David Lewis, Dean of Libraries at IUPUI, Ann Wolpert, Director of
Libraries at MIT, and Tyler Walters, Dean of Libraries at Virginia Tech,
will develop an initial draft/concept and distribute it for feedback.

Over the next three to six months DuraSpace will work closely with sponsors
and communities to develop governance models, a road map and a
sustainability strategy for each project. DuraSpace anticipates bringing
groups of stakeholders together in the coming months to begin this work. If
you would like to be involved in either of these efforts for DSpace or
Fedora please contact Michele Kimpton

Good morning,

If anyone would be willing to share job descriptions/salary ranges that
they have successfully used to hire a software developer for their
institution (esp. higher ed.) to work primarily with Fedora, I would
greatly appreciate it. Any related feedback about recruiting efforts is
also welcome.

Thanks,
Paul

I'm not sure I'm using the resource index correctly as a query returns 2286 hits, which ends up being 121 unique resources. Each resource seems to come out multiple times and needs to be filtered into one. The query is:

type=tuples&flush=true&lang=itql&format=sparql&limit=10000&distinct=on&stream=off&query=select $object $title $description $creator $date $format $rights $publisher $subject from <#ri> where ($object <dc:subject> 'test' or $object <dc:subject> 'TEST' or $object <dc:subject> 'Test') and $object <dc:title> $title and $object <dc:description> $description and $object <dc:creator> $creator and $object <dc:date> $date and $object <dc:format> $format and $object <dc:rights> $rights and $object <dc:publisher> $publisher and $object <dc:subject> $subject

is there something I'm missing?

thanks,
