<pre>Enough of you knew my plans for yesterday and have emailed asking how
things went that I thought I should just report here to let you all know
that I flew a TeleMega (formerly MegaMetrum) v0.3 prototype for the
first time yesterday at Tripoli Colorado's research launch at the
buffalo ranch near Hartsel, CO. The board flew "solo" in my 98mm
test-mule "Trick-o-Treat" on a CTI J600 red motor.

It was a textbook-perfect dual deploy, and the data from the u-blox GPS
looks great! We haven't studied all the sensor data yet, but so far I'm
*very* happy with the performance of this board version.

The wind came up making it unsafe to attempt a complex flight in the
airframe I threw together to try some air-starts, but we'll be at the
NAR National Sport Launch all of next weekend and hope to fly more tests
there.

I also wanted to note that using TeleBT on a 3-element Arrow yagi along
with my Galaxy S2 phone running the latest released AltosDroid from the

<pre>I'm actually thinking now Casey's point (from my FB page) might be
relevant - I had the chutes tied about half way on the shock cord - so
in theory they could have ejected halfway out and then had to wait for
the wiggle to pull em out finally.

The tubes I used were completely full - I was aware of that issue (the
BP not being in close contact under all conditions).

I think fundamentally if I'd been able to ground test I'd have known
what the issue was for sure.

I've never used those, but know people who have. Seems like a pretty
good solution.

The only suggestion I have is that if the vial wasn't *full* of BP, you
should put a bit of wadding in before snapping the top closed, so the
powder isn't moving around, as that can result in incomplete combustion.

<pre>

My experience with BP charges suggests that anything smaller than about
0.7g is kind of "twitchy" unless you do a great job of containment so
that it all burns cleanly. You didn't say anything about how you
constructed the charges, though?

Looks that way to me, too.

This is not unusual. It depends on whether the e-match goes "open" when
it fires or remains conductive. That depends on the design of the
match, and I think also on how your build your charges and how much
force is applied to the match head. See my recent blog post about
batteries and pyro charges for more commentary on this.

Sounds like you recovered the airframe ok, though? If I were making
charges in surgi tubing I'd probably do 0.7g with the match head right
in the middle of the BP if I could for the next try...

Cool!

<pre>Hi All,

So this was the maiden test flight - a modified Madcow Piranha (dual
deploy with an extra 8" of length) on a G79W (which I thought should
hit 800' according to Open Rocket but barely made 550 -- weirdly
Madcow's simple little iphone app predicted this!). I had installed
the motor ejection charge as a precaution as I had no way to ground
test it.

I believe the motor ejection charge fired first - just pre-apogee (the
big blue acceleration spike). Looking at the 2 ejection centrifuge
canisters (with 0.5g 4F) it looks like they both fired. But the
voltage drops were different - the aft drogue appeared to have a tiny
drop, but the main showed a huge drop. The main was set to fire at
400' (I thought it would have been about half way down from 800', but
it was only down from 550).

From ground observation it looked liked the 4F charge was too small to
cleanly blow the chute packages (drogue was a reefed 30") out - and
they seemed to wriggle out slowly and only fully inflate a 100' or so
off the ground. I</pre>

<pre>Hmm, odd. It maybe that they were too close or there was something
about lying the altimeter directly on the table.
After I wrote that it was working again, it stopped working, but then
I picked up the altimeter and it worked (ie the monitor idle came on).
I only had the 6" whip on the teledongle.

Anyway, I put them on Facebook as proof - I'll see if I can link them into you.

The 6v LEDs seemed to light up ok - the LiPO is a modified one.

We'll only give you 4V from the lipo, and if you try a 12V lamp, you'll
probably just end up causing the board to brown-out the CPU, especially
if your lipo hasn't been 'repaired'.

LEDs should work.

If you can plug in the USB cable to the altimeter, you can use monitor
idle over that instead of over the radio link through the
TeleDongle. Once that works, check the radio frequency and callsign
settings to make sure they match between AltosUI and the
TeleMetrum. Finally, make sure you've got a bit of distance (3-4 feet or
perhaps a bit more) between the TeleDongle antenna and the TeleMetrum
antenna as you'll over drive the receivers if they're too close.

Most of the troubles people have with TeleDongle to TeleMetrum connects
are not having the callsigns match.

I see the igniter voltage is 3.7V's -- is this ok for Q2G2s? I guess I
definitely need a lower LED voltage to test the firing.

For a brief while I was able to talk to the telemetrum, and
unsuccesfully tried to fire the charges (what voltage is supposed to
come across those terminals - I tried a couple of small LED's in
place, 12v ones, but they didn't light up - too high a voltage
requirement?).

Anyway, after that, I was trying to see if I could Monitor Idle Mode
etc, and I started getting "Connecting... Call Sign etc", but it just
hangs. I've rebooted everything but my computer to no avail! I get 3
beeps a delay then 2 beeps and 2 short beeps (I think - my ability to
count short sounds is poor). The altimeter is lying down.
