If there are two things Germans have traditionally loved, it's purity and
beer. Now, according to a German brewers

both are at risk because of a potential law that would legalize fracking in
the country.

A 500-year-old beer purity law called the "Reinheitsgebot" is apparently at
stake. The "Reinheitsgebot" states that German brewers can only produce
beer using malt, hops, yeast and water. The chemicals produced by fracking
could, according to the Brauer-Bund beer association, pollute water in the
underground wells used by some breweries.

This is a really important topic and not only for the US of A.  Something
similar could be written about Australia.  Now what Sankara obviously wants
is a return to a putative Golden Era - that of FDR etc.  As | have said
repeatedly, the reason we do not have such an era today despite the
economic chaos is that we are missing the threat of the Bolshevik take
over.  For moderates (liberals) to have any purchase with the ruling class
there has to be among the bourgeoisie a fear of red ruin.

Badiou says somewhere that Lenin and Mao genuinely scared the ruling class.
Whatever one thinks of Mao, the point is a very valid one.  It is fear and
fear alone that will lead a member of the ruling class to get up and say

This thread resonates with me. During the Sixties, I worked in the
restaurant business for five years between semesters while attending
university. But in peculiar circumstances.

 I worked on dining cars on the transcontinental railroads (Canadian
National and Canadian Pacific) between Vancouver in the West and Saint John,
New Brunswick in the East as well as on shorter trips between Detroit,
Buffalo, Toronto and Quebec City. Dining car crews were members of a major
railway running-trades union, which meant we had relatively decent wages and
regular workers had some job security. At various points I worked as a cook,
waiter and finally steward (maître d').

One of the things that radicalized me was working a succession of shit jobs

This is a good essay. It speaks the truth about restaurant work. One of my sons is a chef, and the other two work in the food industry as cooks and manager of a pizza shop. I get pretty disgusted when I hear people talk about the glamor of restaurants. One person I know went on and on one evening about how the work in a fancy restaurant was like a symphony. I wanted to slap her across the face for such stupid bullshit. Cook your own fucking food! My sons are always getting burned and cut, and the work is stressful beyond words. They have great skills, and most of us could do this work for a single shift. Yet, we just order our food and never think about what is happening in that kitchen. Plus wage theft is common, and unpaid hours are the norm. At least when some drunk college kid gives my

I had the privilege of getting to know Van Gosse when we both worked with

while doing fieldwork in south florida, Kanobal Mayans from the
northwestern highlands of Huehuetenango who ended up in the migrant stream.
