Excellent!
My AlphaStation 500/333 works fine.

However I can't test on sgimips.  My sgimips(O2) died... X-&amp;lt;
Maybe power suply.

Please commit your patch. :-)

Hi,

The attached patch makes my PWS500au alpha boot again by restoring the
case where buf_map is not yet mapped when called early from
pmap_bootstrap().

Sure, I'll put them on the list, including DragonFly (we got some great pkgsrc
developers from them), right after the DEC-related groups. In the end, as long
as their new home is not the bin or the scrap metal plant, I would be happy. I
am prioritising their availability to official developers and such first,
though.

The "show fru" output indicates that my CPU P/N is 54-30466-32.A5. Gooogle says about it like "EV68 LGA CIRUITBOARD,W/1GHZ CPU" - looks like truth.
But still I cant` tell definitely is it EV68CB of just EV68. Is this a big difference between them (try to google this)?

Type: "show fru" at the SRM prompt. That will show you DEC part numbers and
serial numbers which you can reference for more information about what's
installed on your machine. Seems like your firmware is current, at least.

FYI: "show | more" and "help show" will give you some ideas on how to find
more information on your system, SRM, and how to use both.

About SRM : A "show version" output indicates that I use "V7.3-2 Feb 27 2007 13:10:18" firmware. Sorry, but I don`t know how to check SRM level...

About CPU: According to Wikipedia, DS 25 have EV68CB's. Unfortunately I don`t know how to check it on my system.

About OS`s. I installed and played with:
OpenVMS 8.4 - got hobbist license. This OS is a way too strange for me
OpenBSD 5.2 - installs and runs fine, but without SMP support :(
Tru64 UNIX 5.1B-4 - currently installed on my system, but without any licenses (only build-in ones).
Will try to install gentoo/alpha this week. And, of course, still hoping to install NetBSD.

Best regards,
Maxim.

What's your SRM firmware level at? I've seen similar happen a number of

    <description>&lt;pre&gt;Hello everyone!

I have a problem installing NetBSD (tried NetBSD from 5.2 up to 6.01) on HP AlphaServer DS 25.
My step-by-step actions:
1. Downloaded NetBSD/alpha ISO from ftp://iso.de.netbsd.org/pub/NetBSD/iso and burned it.
2. Typed "boot dqa0" from SRM console to boot from CD.
3. Boot proceeds, and kernel starts to load, but load fails with "kernel stack not valid halt" error :(

I Googled about this problem (hoping it was a kind of SRM misconfiguration), but no luck :(( .I also noticed that the DS25 is not in "Supported System Models" list at http://www.netbsd.org/ports/alpha/ :(((

Is this system supported? Or is there anyone who had successfully installed NetBSD (any version) on the DS25??

Best regards,
Maxim.

Usually not, but we don't know. However, with the in-tree code it will have
a random GP value (stack noise).

Side note: Michael Hitch pointed out that the generated assembler code does
actually contain GP restoration code past the call to setjmp, but I just
verified that the statically linked executable has "unop" there instead.

So we are realy seeing link time optimization here, and the compiler is
not at fault - while we technically do not have to preserve GP over
the function call to setjmp itself, we have to set it properly to the
value needed in setjmp, even when doing the longjmp.

And the observed behaviour is not a gcc bug, but a valid optimization.

Mystery solved, I'll commit my patch if there are no objections.

Thanks to everyone, learned a lot - and might now even try to implement
"context" for boost.

No real pros vs. my first patch - I just like to fully understand what is
going on before fixing anything, and this sounds like a hot trace.

Actually there is no 100% guarantee that longjmp and setjmp need to end
up close enough to share the GP value (though it is unlikely in case
where link time optimization hits one to fail for the other).
