Hi,

I'm trying to install MacPorts 2.1.3 on my Retina Display MacBook Pro,
Model Identifier MacBookPro10,1, running Mac OS X 10.8.3.

When the Installer was running the package scripts, and reporting that it
had five minutes left, I had to catch a bus so I put the unit to sleep,
then closed the lid.

When I opened it, the Installer reported that it had seven minutes left.  I
let the installer run quite a lot longer than seven minutes, but the
estimated time left steadily grew to seventeen minutes without any
advancement of the progress bar.

Finally I used Command-Option-Escape to kill the process, but when I try to
run the installer again, it tells me that it's waiting for a previous
installation to complete.  I killed the process again, then tried to
restart, but OS X won't let me.  Instead it displays a window that says I
have to wait until the installation completes.  It still says Running
Package Scripts, but does not display a time estimate.

Yes, sorry I lost a digit, I do mean #38901. I agree it says "opened 4
weeks ago" but it was created April 23. Since it is May 19, I count that as
just 4 days short of two months. I am not sure how Trac reckons that as 4
weeks.

Maintainer timeout is 3 days in any case, so there's really no need to

There has been no response in 2 months from maintainer
fabian.renn-gM/Ye1E23mwN+BqQ9rBEUg< at >public.gmane.org to ticket #8901 which I filed about port libxc.
Can the patch I submitted there please be reviewed and committed? These are
minor issues, but it doesn't look like the maintainer is active anymore.

I have a log file with each line timestamped (perhaps I could create a
ticket and upload the log?) and the longest time between two lines is
168s so I guess it's believable that the VMs could be thrashing around?
I can't say for sure without more details.

As for the patch I have, should I just commit it and if the build fails

OSG doesn't necessarily need wxWidgets. It's an optional dependency. I'll
check how the example is set up and why it's failing.

No, the timeout value is global. I don't think we want to wait any
longer for builds that are actually stuck to be killed.


It's timing out in the C generation or the final link step after
compiling the C. I suspect that the slaves may be thrashing, as the
build takes a lot of memory. I don't think it ever took anywhere near 20
minutes between printing lines when I built locally (with 8 GB of RAM).

If it's possible to allocate more memory to the slave VMs, that might help.

Pypy takes a long time (ca. 3 hours on my old Core 2 MacBook) to extract various parameters in order to synthesize its JIT. It normally outputs a lot of debug info during this pass, but whether this is taken into account by the buildbot automated build process remains unknown (at least to me).

I'm hoping some other developers who have a good understanding of MacPorts base can help me. I'm trying to understand some strange behavior of the "option_deprecate" procedure which I think is a bug.


First, some background for those who may not be as familiar with MacPorts base. An "option" in MacPorts—such as "depends_lib" or "configure.args"—is a variable that can be set or overwritten without using the "set" command, that can behave as a list, that can have items appended or deleted or replaced using the special -append, -delete or -replace modifiers, and that supports lazy/late evaluation. And options can have variable traces attached to them using "option_proc" so that a particular procedure runs whenever an option is accessed or changed or deleted.

Options are also automatically global within standard portfile code blocks, like "build {}" or "pre-destroot {}" or "variant {}", meaning that you can just use any option without having to first indicate that it's a global variable. This magic occurs
