Here's one metric: TriZPUG has 90 members on meetup.com and 192 through
mail.python.org.

Those numbers also have a pretty big intersection. And within that
intersection, most of them were already members through mail.python.org
before signing up through meetup.com.

My perception is "many" == a few.

However, I think it is not a bad idea to reach out to even the few and I
support Calvin's initiative to request people interested in promoting
the group to RSVP.

I'd also like to see Calvin update the project night announcement on
TriZPUG.org. :)

BTW, I always update the number who attended on the past event pages of
meetup.com when I rate the meeting. (Somebody beat me to it today,
though, which is a good thing.) The number shows up as text above the
past meeting title. However, only the RSVPs show up as avatars on the
past meetings and those are much more prominent than the tiny text
number above them. I think that might be part of the concern.

primary interaction many people have with our event announcements and

I know many of you don't like Meetup.com, but the fact is that people
do use it and like it.

Most importantly, they look at it. The look at the event page for last
night, where we had
ten or so attendees, and they see only 3 RSVPs. They look and think
we're a tiny group
and no one shows up or participates, so they don't bother showing up themselves.

Do a small part to promote TriZPUG today and tell meetup that you did,
in fact, attend.

And RSVP in the future!

Some of you may already know that plans are underway for PyCarolinas
2012, to be held in October.
As the two Python User Groups in those "carolinas" (and please let me
know if SC has any groups I
should be including as well) I'd like to invite anyone interested to
join the organizer list. This will also
be where talks will be submitted.

This is hosted on google groups and you can request membership here:

I am keeping this private, but not forbidding anyone from joining. I
just want to keep discussion about
talk submissions a little non-public.

Thank you to anyone who wants to lend a hand or just attend!
